It’s ultimately a very sweet game, a short little novel of an experience that is rewarding in its execution and appealing in its presentation. Winter Burrow might not be the most challenging experience, but it’s not really supposed to be. Finding the right balance between exploration, atmosphere, and challenge, Winter Burrow is a bittersweet tale that only grows sweeter as time goes on.

Nine hours after reaching a ramshackle stump in the woods, I’d transformed my home into a cheerful shelter. Filled with well-earned comforts gathered from across varied landscapes and friends’ warm regards. Its intentional approachability can err on the side of feeling too easy, but the constant, looming danger of winter goes a long way towards balancing the scales. Still, the only thing I want to do right now is return to my roaring fireplace and brave the frosts in Winter Burrow.

This is probably the cutest game that I have ever experienced.

Winter Burrow is a charming, storybook survival adventure that swaps stress for serenity, wrapping its cozy world in warmth and heart. It’s a delight to explore, but without a map or fast travel, that long trudge home can start to feel frostier than it should.

Winter Burrow really stands out for its unique setting and the bold way it chooses to approach its narrative and character writing. Mechanically, it’s less bold, being a solid game to play, even if it’s a little overly similar to others in the genre and too linear for my personal taste. It is definitely a cozy take on its genre, one that can be played at your own pace without worry of a big difficulty curve or trouble, while unironically having a more solemn story than a lot of its peers.

Winter Burrow is a gentle survival game that shares many traits with far more demanding titles, but softens them in favor of an experience with a warmer, more welcoming soul. One might even say it’s suitable for younger players. The story of this little mouse, who must restore his parents’ burrow, teaches us the value of a caring community. The cozy aspect of decorating and customizing the burrow isn’t particularly successful, and there’s no truly original idea that sets it apart from its inspirations. Still, it remains a pleasant fable about the value of simplicity.

Winter Burrow gives players with a beautiful world to explore, but doesn't do enough with it to keep players coming back.
