  • Summary: Master the elements in this stealth game where everything burns. Start fires, freeze water, and move earth itself to outsmart superstitious enemies who fear your power. Rescue captive villagers and reclaim your home by turning the environment against the army sent to hunt you down.

Wildfire is top-notch stealth gameplay in a low-cost package, and is one of the brightest indies of the year so far.

On both the surface and deep within, Wildfire is a success, and we definitely see this as a franchise in-waiting. Hopefully all the fanfare and positive critical reception the game has received so far continues, and we see it go beyond even Sneaky Bastards’ own expectations. There’s room for it to land on consoles down the track too, where it would fit nicely. Especially having played it on PC using a controller (which I found more rewarding than the initial mouse and keyboard approach). But all of that will depend on how it’s openly received by punters now that it’s out in the wild.

The love of Thief, and even more recent stealth gems such as Mark of the Ninja shine through in Wildfire, but it’s the game’s own systems that help it to stand out amongst its peers. There are a small number of issues affecting the gameplay, but overall this is a very polished, suitably challenging and wonderfully realised concept that toys with your pre-conceptions of the genre.

There’s considerable joy to poking at the edges of its ingenious interlocking systems to see what happens.

Thanks to impressive level design, a nice range of cool abilities to try out and a spark of something truly unique (pun semi-intended), Wildfire succeeds at delivering a great stealth experience, even if it can be demanding at times. The controls are top-notch, the gameplay is simple to learn yet nicely tricky to master, and the numerous optional objectives provide a decent dose of replayability (definitely one for speedrunners). For those wanting something new in the genre, Wildfire has nice and crispy tricks up its sleeve.

A 2D stealth platform that lets you glimpse, between some limits and many beautiful ideas, the charm of the indie games. At the end of the short journey, master the elements made in pixel art is really nice.

There are levels where everything works together to create some interesting challenges, though these are not frequent enough to make Wildfire stand out from the crowd.

You can use these elemental powers in a number of different ways, unlocked as you progress, which give you a ton of different options for getting through each level.

While a single play through is fun enough, the real joy is after you beat the game and can replay in New Game+ with all your abilities already unlocked. This gives you all-new solutions for solving each level more quickly and easily than before. It's obvious that this is the way the game is intended to be played, because you won't be able to fully unlock all the skill trees and equippable upgrades in one playthrough, possibly even two. Each level also has a speedrun goal, which is extremely hard the first time through and much easier with some upgrades under your belt.

Only a few niggling things keep this from being a 10/10 for me. The big one is that some of the game's rules aren't explained well. In particular, the villagers' wooden restraints can not only be burned with fire but frozen with ice, smashed with thrown objects, or even broken by dropping on them from high enough. Ice doesn't last as long when an enemy is encased in it. I eventually figured out how to put guards to sleep, but sometimes they wake up and I don't know why.

Enemy AI is kind of inconsistent. They don't always seem to spot me at the same range and at the same angles, and sometimes they'll climb or jump to look for me but sometimes they won't. Sometimes they'll get to the spot they want to search and look around, but sometimes they'll just stare off in one direction. It makes consistent solutions hard to figure out.

There are also a few collision bugs. Notably, I've had villagers teleport and stand on thin air pretty regularly, and occasionally soldiers will zip around as well.

Overall this is a delightful game, and I discourage anyone from passing judgement on it too early. For the most positive experience, I recommend skipping any frustrating optional goals on your first playthrough, and come back to them in New Game+ instead. Once you have most of your upgrades unlocked, breezing through the levels is a ton of fun.

I have found two flaws of this game:
    1. There is a game mechanic which allows you to play as bobcat, but developers gave you this opportunity only once.
    2. I got bored somewhere in the middle of the game, but i wanted to play till the end and thus i found a way to cheat.

Expand
