Although Warside has many of the fundamentals of Advance Wars-style battles down, it’s still a work-in-progress. At present, it’s shaping up to develop into a reasonable facsimile of Intelligent Systems’ turn-based series, allowing its military units to charge onto non-Nintendo hardware.

Warside is like an old family car (tank?). Familiar, sturdy, with a solid engine that will get you where you need to go, but with no frills and a rusty, barebones exterior. While its core tactical systems and pixel art aesthetics are entertaining and likely to satisfy subgenre fans, they remain underserved by a repetitive campaign, rough story and lack of supporting modes and features.

Warside’s single biggest flaw is that it fails to do anything to step out of the shadow of Advance Wars in any meaningful way. Without its own personality it is, ultimately, not as memorable as it should be, but that cross-play multiplayer and the fact that you don’t need your gaming group to all own Switches to enjoy playing together does save it. For not just locked to PC, but by the time it comes to consoles, I expect it will have a pretty dedicated following.
