    People complained about the cut scenes in the campaign, this is an easy fix. Don't play campaign. If you don't like the cut scenes then just play multiplier, at first your going to find everything difficult, trust me with practice and a little effort, you can fly these planes like a champ. I found War thunder to my funnest personal retreat from my insulting "friends" and obnoxious habits.

    First off new players need to understand that this game is still updating in a major way. I've played this game since it was in early beta and it was pretty decent back then. Buggy but playable, over the months the game as gotten far better in every way. Wait times are no longer 3 minutes but near 30 seconds in arcade mode, maybe 1 minute or so in realistic mode.

    As for gameplay the    First off new players need to understand that this game is still updating in a major way.     As for gameplay the game is divided into multiple parts.
    Arcade mode for beginners or people that are casual.
    Realistic for the average player with limited respawns, realisitc controls and realistic damage.
    Simulator mode for the hardcore that know what they're really doing.

    Tank mode is also good but still very buggy. Same arcade, realistic and simulator mode applies for this.

    Pros:
    Very functional flight mode
    Great graphics for a free game
    Paid items that are not too over powered
    Updates come monthly or so

    Cons:
    Tank mode can be really buggy
    Community can be frustrating at times
    Introduction of cross console with PS4 really makes a bad feeling for both ends with their different controls and play styles    … Expand

    best f2p game ive ever played, i managed to get to t4 in all nations before the grinding started feeling pointless.
    and i have never encountered a paywall in this game
    realistic is where its at, you can watch ww2 tank och plane documentaries and learn strength and weaknesses in yours and your enemies tanks and planes, and with the amount of vehicles already in the game and more being    best f2p game ive ever played, i managed to get to t4 in all nations before the grinding started feeling pointless.

    after i bought 1 years premium my only real grind is for silver lions (ingame currency) for late tier tanks and planes, they can be bought but are expensive and seldom worth it.
    but with console players on the same servers as pc players you are guaranteed some easy kills and there are other methods of farming as well.

    i recomend this game to players that likes plane games, even though you are new to flying games arcade mode is a good place to start, with high number of players in a small map with multiple objectives and multiple spawns with your different crews and planes.

    gaijin also holds golden eagle event where you can get a few hundred golden eagle (the real money ingame currency) so you can get premium days for free.    … Expand

    Another thing I want to address is that there are also people crying about how a specific faction's guns are a bit weaker. Ex. 3 Cannons Japs vs 4 Cannons Fw190. Despite historical accuracy, this is a great balancing decision. Using the above example. Fw190 is an energy fighter which requires a complete different style to fly (aka boom and zoom), which means that the window of triggering is only a fraction of a second. On the other hand, Jap Zeros are turn fighters which means they will have more time on target, therefore slightly less fire power to even out the playing field.

    I rarely give games 10s but I think this game deserves every single score of mine. Developers are CONSTANTLY adding more features and new vehicles with World War Mode coming soon (Don't quote me). It is a mode where everyone fight in different threaters of wars which influences each other (i think, not many details are out).

    One of my favourite games ever! Played for a few years and never got bored. Best free simulator ever!!!!!!! Those guys with low reviews are just trolls or suck at gaming. Not a pay to win, and balanced planes!

    Great game, much better than anything war gaming can produce. Air battles are great, especially with a joystick. Ground Forces is a little shaky but is still pretty good. Overall great game. I also tested closed beta

    This is a free to die game and verry expensive to win, about 200€ to start. However is the verry best flight simulator of WW II in multiplayer on-line (MMO) mode.

    The best game i have ever play because it has got very good graphics and gameplay !I think that this is the best simulation game that it discovered !     I am a level 91 general. Played this game a lot. Cursed it and loved it. After all this time,
    one single line about it : if you want the best tank game around , play this one.

    War Thunder is a free-to-play fighter and tank simulation MMO that's got something to offer for both the casual player and the WWII tank buff, although a lot of its content and even its interface is probably better suited to the latter demographic.     In comparison to World of Warplanes, War Thunder is certainly well and far apart from the arcade action of World of Warplanes. It is a really beautiful game and the most endearing feature is the fact that all around the graphics are gorgeous and the sound is terrific. There certainly is a good sense of immersion in the game and the game has multiple modes and more realistic modes such asIn comparison to World of Warplanes, War Thunder is certainly well and far apart from the arcade action of World of Warplanes.     What this game doesn't tell you is that there are certain things just are just huge turn offs and you don't readily find this until once you've played a bit. The biggest detractor is that as a Russian developer, there is an easily noticeable bias towards Russian planes. This game is flight sim-ish in its approach however you'll quickly start to realize that that for some reason Russian planes seem to have physics defying flight models similar to UFO's and that it takes a lot more to effort, work and firepower to shoot down a Russian (even a slow moving Russian bomber or outdated bi-plane) than it is for you to get shot down by them.

    The other major detractor is the bias towards mouse based flight controls. Joystick users are left to fiddle with a complex array of attributes to get their own joystick working, where as mouse users have an easier time executing maneuvers. Whats more, every patch you'll need to rework and find what flight models of planes that were working fine, no longer flying right.
    It still is a great game and I do recommend playing it. However if you are a hardcore flight sim enthusiast with a love of historical accuracy you'll be disappointed after the initial marvel wears thin.    … Expand

    Progression system is very tedious once you reach higher levels but, I enjoyed the game. Beautiful graphics and plane models. Best flight simulator in a while!

    For a Free to Play game, War Thunder is extremely well polished and very fun to play. I have mainly played the tank portion of the game, and after 20+ hours I am impressed. There are plenty of tanks available and they are relatively balanced, although there definitely is a pro-Russian bias in both tanks and airplanes.     Fun for a free casual tank simulation multiplayer game.
    I've been casual playing tanks only for about one years so I did not review planes or ship battles or competitive matches.
    Matches are fast, many maps, many tanks, many players, good visuals, low waiting cue, amost no trolls in chat, good sound , it didn't feel like a pay to win game because at ages 1 and 2 and 3 I didn't find many    Fun for a free casual tank simulation multiplayer game.

    I strongly recommend playing realistic battle over arcade ones
    Negative aspects are: mandatory game updater software that is invase and tricky to uninstall..i didn't like it ...if you search for it in online game store and forum you will read some comment about privacy issues with this ; some minor bug that hasn't been fixed in ages ; lot's of spawn campers...developers need a better way to prevent it ; repairing time and prices of age 3 (and up) tanks are very expensive...and that limit replayability in a single session ; steep learining curve ...it is not a new player friendly game so it is not easy to invite new players: for example maps knowledge and enemy tank armour knowledge weights a lot more than personal control ability or strategic thinking skills....so when netmatching force you to play against players with hundred of hours of play on their back you will be at serious disadvantage...a little frustraing at first.
    The game seems a little rough compared to others online game from AAA developers but it is a good game.; I'm a modeller so part of the fun comes in "collecting" various tanks form ww2 if you didn't like this aspect lower my review score by one or two points.    … Expand

The first hours or days you will progress fairly fast through the first 3 maybe 4 ranks, but after that its 100 of hours for a single vehicle.

    Also i always hated certain game mechanics. For example, when you unlock and buy a new vehicle it comes with no upgrades, usually meaning not the best ammo or gun, or engine but in this f**ing game you have to unlock the ability to repair and put put fires! Seperatly! Its the dumbest thing to think a tank crew cant repair or use an fpe because they didnt bring any to the battle.

    TL;DR Game has huge historical amount of vehcles and they look great and also (mostly) feel great to play. Sadly everything surrounding the game is pure agony and suffering. If you like the historical part, great, i like to collect most of the vehicles rather than playing them. But that you need to amke your own grind goals, so that you dont start eating you own skin, is a bit much. But they make money, and have next to none competetors. So why would they stop? I really love/hate the game

    Reduce the grind, decompress the br´s and maybe it would be time for some new game modes besides elimination and conquer, but i doubt that will ever happen.    … Expand

    Great battle mechanics, gameplay, realism.

    Personally I enjoyed playing arcade most of the time. The quick but fun battles are great. If you'd rather have uber realism then go into simulation mode. It is a pain in the *** but well worth it.

    Do not play "Arcade" battles in ground forces, you will be deeply disappointed as its all about super fast tank, drifting tanks, shell drop indicator (shows you exactly how much your shell will drop over distance so always guarantees a hit and penetration) and shooting at player name tags (You can see a player name tag across the map)... so in short there is absolutely no realism or strategy involved in "Arcade" battles, but then again that is why its called ARCADE BATTLES ffs, and that is where most people base their reviews on!

    Now "Realistic" and "Simulator" battles is where the game shines! The tanks travel at realistic speeds, they don't drift, no shell drop indicator (so you have to judge for yourself how much your shell will drop over the relevant distance *GASP*), and no player name tags (so you have to spot a tank with your own 2 eyes all on your very own *GASPS some more*). Realistic and Simulator modes is all about understanding your tank and knowing your opponent weak points when you run into him (his reload speed, armor thickness, weakspots, ammo rack positions etc) and its about patience, if you going to run around the map breaching cover everywhere you go you are going to get shot by someone sitting in cover probably well camouflaged and he is going to snipe your engine bay, stalling your tank, setting it on fire and then land 1 more shot on your ammo rack and *POOF* you are out of there... then you going to sit back and cry about campers or how biased the game is or how you can shoot another tank 8 times without killing him and he hits you dead with 1 round and then you going to b!tch about the game is broken etc... But bottom line is you just don't understand tank warfare or where to hit another tank for a critical shot. Realistic and Simulator modes are as realistic as you're going to get in this game genre, you just need to put a bunch of hours into the game to properly understand tank mechanics and tank warfare and not b!tch about the first person who shoots you from a distance and kills you with 1 shot because that is completely possible even in real life...

    People also complain about how the BR system is broken and the matchmaking is broken, those people are just idiotic beyond belief... Its Simple actually. If you've got 5 tanks in your line up, lets say 4 of them are tier 1 and 2 with BR 1 - 4 and your last tank is a tier 4 with a BR of lets say 7 for arguments sake, the game will only match you up with your highest tier tank which means your tier 1 and 2 tanks are going to face tier 4 tanks because you have a tier 4 tank in your line up and then complain about the matchmaking being broken and ask "How can a T-50 vs a Tiger 1H, the matchmaking is broken!! fack this game!!" but you were the one who put your tiny T-50 against a Tiger 1H by not understanding the matchmaking system. I will let you in on a secret, to beat the problem, make sure all the vehicles you take into battle are of the same BR. so don't take a tier 1 tank into battle with your tier 2 or 3 tanks because you will have a hard time, its really that simple! keep your vehicles in your line up at the same BR and you wont have a problem.

    Now that I'm done ranting on about stupid people... The game itself is great, its a free game but definitely isn't pay to win in any sense, but it is pay to progress faster than the free players as your gold eagles you buy only help you with research points and to buy premium tanks, there is no premium ammo to buy or any other nonsense that gives you an advantage over other players except for researching stuff faster than them. the graphics and visuals are outstanding and a brilliantly optimized game which you could probably run on your toaster, the sounds are brilliant, no generic sounds carried across vehicles, they all have their own unique sounds when it comes to engine and cannon fire etc. It's an all rounded brilliant games with a few rough edges that still need polishing out but its nothing game breakingly bad, most people wont even notice them... I would recommend this game to anybody who is a fan of realistic warfare and a fan or WWII era machines as this game is historically accurate and it really is one of a kind... Its a free game and extremely good, give it a go, but you need to put a bunch of hours into it to understand the game properly! and not jump ship after a few "Arcade" battles and then criticize the game for being a heap of **** because "Arcade" mode is a heap of ****    … Expand

The game has evolved considerably since I first started playing. I can remember when each nation only had a handful of aircraft. Now the game boasts over 300+ Unique aircraft (Guiness World Record). And the game also now has tanks forAfter having played this game for....1,415 hours; if steam is to be believed...I still haven't grown tired of it. Each match feels different from the last. The game has evolved considerably since I first started playing. I can remember when each nation only had a handful of aircraft. Now the game boasts over 300+ Unique aircraft (Guiness World Record). And the game also now has tanks for Russia, Germany and the US. They just added a few premium British tanks as well.

    WarThunder has a variety of modes to appeal to a variety of different people. Arcade is a good mode for quick matches. Realistic battles are more challenging and remove aim indicators. And full sim battles are particularly intense in that your view is restricted to the commander or cockpit view.

    The vehicles all have distinct characteristics and models and perform differently as a result. You can go a whole match without scoring one kill and still come out on top of the leaderboard if you play the objectives. If you manage to belly land your plane after sustaining critical damage your rewarded for it. If you take a lot of hits your rewarded for it with an adamant reward. Playing in a squad and assist your team mate killing a tank; your rewarded for it. This is in stark contrast to a game like WoT. In WoT you get one spawn, and when your vehicle's HP pool is depleted thats it. In WarThunder you can try to get back to base in your plane. Or you can repair your tank in the field if you have the repair module unlocked. You aren't just given a static 'death' animation once your HP is depleted as you get in WoWP.

    It also needs to be said that the tanks have evolved quite a bit in WarThunder. With changes like ground deformation you see your tank's tracks sinking into the ground. And if you get into 'muddy' terrain. Your tank becomes covered in Mud and ends up bogged down. The new Dagor 4.0 engine allows for fully destructible environments.

    WarThunder also has a great customization system. You can put decals on your vehicles, adjust their camo, and on tanks you can even adjust how worn that camo is. Or you can load up the texture in photoshop or another program and make your own skins.

    WarThunder has a lot to offer especially for being a free game. People have criticized its microtransactions and premium vehicles. I think its important to distinguish that WarThunder is a free to play game. Your not paying $60 and another $50-60 on top of that for a season pass. Any free to play game needs to be monetized in some way. Its how the developer makes money off said game. The premium vehicles aren't pay to win either as some might suggest. In fact a fully upgraded stock tank tends to be better statistically than a premium of its tier. The only real advantage premium vehicles have is that they have greater credit and XP earning potential.

    You may find yourself coming back for more and more. I know I have. Especially when new vehicles are released. Like the recent addition of the B-29. What are you waiting for? Go download the game; and see you in the skies and on the ground!    … Expand

    Love this game, except that i "have" to turn auto repair off on my heavy tanks and let them repair over time so I don't go in the hole..

    The game is decently fun with good graphics (DLSS seems not to work very well, though). The grind to upgrade vehicles and equipment is way too hard.

    This is best flight non-hardcore simulator I played. One of the best graphics and optimization in free-to-play. Only boring awards for new rank or victory upset me.

However, if you're impatient and want to grind all the vehicles within a year, you will need to at least buy a premium account which isn't actually expensive especially if you get it during a sale.

    The game is designed that way: it's free to play but if you really like it and/or want to grind fast, buy a premium account for a year during a 50% sale and at least one premium vehicle.

    I've been playing since mid-2014 and have found the best way to play is to play both air and ground forces of at least 3 nations and also to play cooperatively in a squad with others which increases your chances of survival and victory dramatically.

    Recently, the most exciting news besides the addition of naval battles and world war mode, is that War Thunder is not a WW2 or 1950s era game any more. Already it includes vehicles from the 1980s and according to the developers, they'll go up till the present-era with tanks, helicopters and possibly supersonic jets and even submarines!!    … Expand

    War thunder is very much a matter of "It's not perfect but its the best in class"
    The only other game of it's kind that I really worthy playing right now is World of Warships. And these two games are different enough that they don't overlap.

Learn the mechanic of the game before calling it broken. It is a very good game.
    P/S: Premium tanks are not better than normal tanks, they just makes more money, and some premiums are maybe worse than their normal counterpart. Take the SMK for example, it has 2 turrets, 2 capable main guns, but it is slow as HECK, shoot the middle of the sides and it'll go up in flames like the fireworks on New Year's Eve.    … Expand

    Could be much better.. Visuals, sounds are top but, the game is turning fast more and more to pay to win/unlock. Grind is way to long (over 1000 hours with premium account and vehicles and not even 30% unlocked). And the matchmaking..

    I think this is easily one of the best simulations of WWII that is out there today. How good the game looks and plays makes you feel like you are truly a part of history. And while the game is very realistic in how these battles play out it still has it's moments at times where you cant help but feel cheated. Realistic offers . . . realistic physics, damage and fueling models into the game play, the maps and oppositions are a bit fantasy though, i don't recall BF109's ever serving in the pacific. You must manage your engine and understand the attributes of both your own and enemy aircraft to have any chance of regular success in WT. The greater part of this is flying tactically, doing things like climbing to the side of a map rather than straight at you opposition. I see so many players going headlong at the enemy every game which tends to develop into a 50/50 proposition. By climbing and engaging who and when i choose that proposition becomes more like 70/30. Simple but true. Critics complain about the economy and grinding to get planes. I disagree. At early levels planes are easy to research and upgrade, what you should concentrate on is getting your crew stats up to maximum and then upgrading that crew to expert (free with xp points) or ace (paid gold lions). Then every subsequent airplane that crew uses already have a very proficient crew. I have fighter specific pilots, who fly nothing but fighters and bomber specific crews, as with bomber crews it is important to make sure your defensive gunnery positions are crewed and manned by experienced crew members. FYI - i have been playing this game for years and have almost every plane for every air-force in the game. High rank planes and Jets take much longer to acquire, but so they should. Best fighter IMHO is the MkiX Spitfire, a little weak on armament compared to others but will literally fly circles around anything. Best light/medium bomber is the JU88A. This thing will outrun almost every enemy fighter with ease. It can dive at speeds up-to 680kph before structural failure, well beyond what any pursuing fighters can handle. It has air-brakes so you can do this vertically, also great for dive bombing and high approach speed landings. It also has enough bombs to take out 3 bases by itself or create havoc on ground forces with 2 x 500kg and 28 x 50kg payload. Just fly along a road a convoy is taking and pump out 50kg bombs, don't aim with the bomb recticle, just do it by feel, after a few attempts you will see what i mean. 10+ AI kills in one pass is common for me. The JU88 can also take a ton of damage an just keep going. I have flow halfway across the map at low level with both engines smoking and in the red-line for the whole journey on more than one occasion. My biggest critique and probably the most talked about fault of the game is the match making, where the game selects your opponents based on their and your BR (Battle Rating). It is just a fact that sometimes you do find yourself faced with far superior machinery, but this is realistic and that did happen. Fly to your strengths and only engage when you have the advantage, there's nothing so good as a Rank Does Not Matter award at the end of a battle. There will be times when YOU are the far superior aircraft. I remember spawning in my Meteor and was the only jet in the game and i was shot down by an F8F Bearcat when i was landing. If you are struggling to win, play tactically or join a squadron, its easier when a team co-ordinates it's actions. If you are new to realistic, learn to land as you will need to re-arm, refuel and repair at least once per mission in most fighters. Also learn to land on an aircraft carrier (imperative for Norway map Allied). If its not a carrier based plane with no tail hook land at 180kph, flaps down gear up. every plane in the game has very different flight and performance characteristics, spend alot of time in your favorites to master them and a little time in the planes you predominately fight against so you will know their strengths and weaknesses. I noticed this early on in my playing of the game so it definitely is not a one time thing, but my memory is bad so Im only going to give the example that is freshest in my mind.

    I am playing as an M3 Lee medium tank, It has a 75mm gun in the hull and a 37mm in the turret. I start to cross a bridge but notice an enemy on the other side, so i reverse off the bridge and set up an ambush for the enemy. The enemy comes to me, not noticing that it has fallen right into my trap. I open fire with both cannons. it is some kind of light vehicle armed with machine guns. Due to this enemy's light armor my shells have no problem penetrating into the tank. At this point, the enemy tank, that should be dead, rotates its turret in my direction and starts shooting me with machine guns. In total I put 2 or 3 75mm shells into this thing, and 3 or 4 37mm shells into it. needless to say, this thing should me dead, but somehow, using its machine guns it manages to destroy me.    … Expand

Понятно что разработчик должен зарабатывать, но 500 с хером рублей за месяц - не многовато ли? При этом на топовых БР-ах даже с премом серебро фармится не то чтобы хорошо.

    - прокачка... Куча однотипных машин в ветках, в большинстве случаев которые требуют не только исследования, но и покупки. Самое потрясающее это необходимость прокачивать ОГНЕТУШИТЕЛИ!!! ДАЖЕ В СОВРЕМЕННЫХ ТАНКАХ!!! Необходимость открытия возможности полевого ремонта я ещё как-то с большим скрипом могу понять, но ПРОКАЧКА ОГНЕТУШИТЕЛЯ!!!! Это просто верх наглости.

    Ну и сама контора себя уже дискредитировала своей политикой в общении с комьюнити, особенно многолетнее юление в вопросе читерства (последний анальный манёвр - ЧИТОВ в игре НЕТ, есть ЗАПРЕЩЁННЫЕ МОДИФИКАЦИИ! Это просто пять, снова выполнили своим пердалищем фигуру высшего пилотажа.

    В общем, когда-то казалось (во времена где-то патча 1.45), что проект строится весьма годный. Вокруг игры собралось множество людей, интересующихся историей техники, всё было довольно лампово. Система повреждений хоть и была очень сырой (спойлер - ), но выглядела мегакруто. Графоний был весьма приятен на тот момент (да он был даже лучше чем сейчас, особенно освещение), баланс был более ли менее сносный, и всё было хорошо. Но в какой-то момент что-то произошло, и всё покатилось в мохнатую. Примерно с введением MBT-70, не помню какой это был патч. Началось натягивание новых наций (нахрен никому не нужных), вертолетов (которые не играбельны в большинстве), флота (для полутора человек) - и всё это гордо называется РАЗВИТИЕ. Т.е. толком не доделав "скелет" игры, не избавившись от детских болячек, они решили забить болт и рубить бабло. Ну, это их право. Какое-то количество денег в игру я занёс, так что считаю что имею право высказывать своё мнение. И, выкакавшись тут, спокойно удаляю игру. Очень жаль, что этот проект скатился, даже не развив до конца свой потенциал.    … Expand

Твой комп смахивает на печатную машинку прямиком из канцелярии рейхсфюрера СС? Не беда, ведь игра просто великолепно оптимизирована и на минимальных настройках её потянет любое ведро. Не забыли и про игроков с топовыми ПК, кому позавидовали бы передовые инженеры Пентагона. Для них существуют ультра настройки, где у вас глаза повылазят из орбит от красоты происходящего на экране.
    Что касается геймплейной составляющей, тут беспокоится не о чем. Приближенная(!) к реалистичной система повреждений, которой могут составить конкуренцию разве что топовые симуляторы. Есть возможность поиграть как аркадному геймеру-новичку, так и заядлому симуляторщику. Для этого предусмотрены различные режимы игры. Подбор техники происходит по боевому рейтингу, который иногда меняют, дабы получше сбалансировать игру.
    Если говорить о минусах (которые тут есть), можно отметить не идеальную систему повреждений. О ней можно говорить очень много, долго, хорошего и плохого но по-факту она зачастую может быть попросту случайной, а если добавить к этим случайностям нередкие баги дамаг модели, то получается весьма сомнительного качества картина. Но. Но. Гайджин стараются сделать реалистичные повреждения, а это весьма сложно, ведь определить и просчитать урон осколками или самим снарядом по различным типам брони и внутри них, невероятно сложно, а я напомню что вам это даётся на безвозмездной основе!
    В целом и общем, по-моему мнению это лучшее из того, что может вам предложить игропром в этом жанре. Да, она не идеальна, но если вы любитель техники, её истории и всяческих масштабных баталий, то эта игра подарит вам десятки, сотни, а то и тысячи весело проведённых часов.    … Expand

Yeah, you can easily get rank 3 or 4 (Like T-34s or Shermans) of any nation in one month or less, but if you want something higher (Abrams, F-4C or T-72), you'll have to donate or grind for more than a year. But, if you like WWII planes, tanks or ships - this game will give you them all in some time, but if you want Mig-19 or Mirage, you'll have to grind a lot. But if grind doesn't stop you, then just try it. There's good graphics, plane's physics (much better than in other games) and bit worse tank's physics. Gameplay is not so exciting, but with friends, you can have some fun. Just my small advices: T-72s, Abramses and other modern stuff doesn't worth your money and time, but jet planes can be interesting, and Arcade battles much worse than Realistic, but for newcomers arcade is the best way to learn the game basics.… Expand

    It is a very realistic game. But, if you want to play in good quality, you must have a very very good PC. Otherwise you gonna have low FPS (around 20-25 and you my see 15) and low graphics.

    Sad that either players or people working for wargaming resorted to try and bash a game that is far superior.

    If you're going to use somebody else's review to decide whether you play or not then you're going based on somebody else's opinion that could be bad internet bad computer so on. I strongly suggest you give it a try start with the arcade mode, then try out realistic, then try out sim, try the different vehicle lines see which ones you like.


    It truly is a very enjoyable game to play for me at least.

    Bet war simulator out there. Modern tanks planes helis i one battle with true to life fizicks, sounds and apierence. Can run on a potato and can make look beutiful on powerful PC and consol. Been playing for 8 years now and will continiue.

    Anyway, to the game. Its a very good concept on a fairly good engine, you can run it on a potato and still get 60 fps. Looks very good. The servers are however garbage except the EU servers and there are some very big bugs. That get "fixed" every 2 weeks but you are still able to encounter them. The Its fixed patches were a huge joke until the last month. Progressing without paying at least 20 bucks on the new years sale on a 180 day premium account is not impossible but really hard. After around Tier 3 you will suffer the enormus Silver lion (ingame base currency) and RP (Research Points) that you will need to earn.
    The game is hard, a lot of players are toxic a**holes, if you ask someone how to play a specific vehicle they will say "if you cant play the XY then simply dont play it". But go on r/WarThunder and they will help you out.
    Dont buy top tier premiums with nearly 0 experience because you will suffer. I play the game since 2013 and I still dont know how to play the Mustangs.    … Expand

    The gameplay in matches are not pay2win but there are many systems in place such as the research system that is deliberately slowed too create draw toward paying money for premium time and premium vehicles. Grinding to the top is totally manageable without spending any money but will take along time and might get frustrating. With continues updates and new content being added throwing the developers some money for premium time/vehicles is totally worth it.

    This game is an incredible masterpiece of a game. It certainly has its many cons, and almost any player will have their complaints; yet everyone keeps coming back to play more. Playing with friends makes the experience even better, from the lowest tier and higher.     I've been playing this for more than 5 years and it took me a year or two to feel that I am getting competitive. I never bought any packs, I just played the events and sometimes sold the materials/vehicles I don't need to buy some premium account time. So don't expect to learn the game right away as it is quite unforgiving. However, the joy in this game is in the learning process, and being able to try out new tactics using different historical vehicles.

    If you want to enjoy the game especially the top-tier modern stuff, prepare for the long haul as jumping right in using premiums without prior experience at that tier will just make you suffer.

    Overall it's a great game with an okay monetization model. For new players please play arcade first to get a feel then slowly try out realistic mode at around BR 3.7. And remember that the community highly values Realistic Battle (RB game mode) experience compared to Arcade (AB). That is because Arcade has a slightly different balancing compared to RB. Also worry not about the ping as long as it is not in the red you'll be fine. This game is not an FPS that needs a fast connection to get an edge. Tactics, vehicle speed, and positioning is the way of the game. Maps are large, tanks are slow, and shots arc over distance so you're internet connection should be able to handle it as long as you're not in the red.    … Expand

    If you don't have premium, you will spend too much time on this game. Very tilting game when you get killed cross map through bushes. When gaijin gives you ghost shell and when the game randomly kicks you out or you get packet loss and pay 15k repair cost and get crew locked. In conclusion, recommended.

    The game will give a boner to any war machine nerd out there but it gets incredibly tedious thanks to the research system and toxic community, it's a game to only hop on casually with friends rather than one where you should dump hundreds of hours to unlock a level 6 tank

I think it goes further than just the economy, the research, the gameplay, the lack of game modes and innovation. There is much more that has not evolved in the right direction.     Why I can recommend it? Just try the game it is free.

    Be aware that if you want to play top tier planes, tanks or boats this game might not make you happy. The way to get there is incredibly long and the balancing is not very polished (Usually a re-balance of OP stuff leads to a new long unbalanced time period with new OP stuff).

    Then there is the other hand. The game is very unbalanced using the guise of 'realism'. The economy is complete and udder trash tier. You lose money per match the higher tiers you go even if you're an average or decent player because they include repair costs without the payout to recover those losses. The ability to max out one tree for one faction for one vehicle type can take thousands of hours because of low rewards or the outright punishment of losing money per match.

    Then there is the elephant in the room. The devs are some of the pettiest people I've seen in gaming. Gaslighting and blaming the community when they're finally fed up with bad practices that has been happening for years. Removing negative posts or constructive critisism on their forums and ignoring other means of communication. So petty they removed the steam logo from their website because of the bad reviews from people fed up with their stuff.

    I wrote my original negative review on steam around 2018 calling out these bad practices and finally people are waking up to it after recent controversies. Nice to have you guys finally on board. Don't get complacent and let Gaijin know that their practices are no longer acceptable. Don't stop at a small step to 'fix' the economy, demand them balance the game, fix the bugs, and finally listen to the people who actually give a crap.

    The game gets a 1/10 until the problems are fixed and that 1 is just because there is a good game under the hood of a destroyed economy.    … Expand

    One of the cornerstones of War Thunder is that player’s skill is more important than his wallet. Premium vehicles offer no combat advantages, there is no “microtransaction-only” ammo or consumables, so no amount of cash will buy you a spot on the top of the food chain. [Issue#216, p.56]

    The official launch of War Thunder reminded me why I like this game so much. It's adorably chaotic - in contrast to the reliably designed World of Tanks. That's why it can be really fun and frustrating at the same time. There's tons of great vehicles (and the planes are superb!) and a difficult simulation mode, but there are also balance and technical issues.
