  • Summary: Walden, a game, is a first person simulation of the life of American philosopher Henry David Thoreau during his experiment in self-reliant living at Walden Pond. Players follow in his footsteps,Walden, a game, is a first person simulation of the life of American philosopher Henry David Thoreau during his experiment in self-reliant living at Walden Pond. The game begins in the summer of 1845 when Thoreau moved to the Pond and built his cabin there. Players follow in his footsteps, surviving in the woods by finding food and fuel and maintaining their shelter and clothing. At the same time, players are surrounded by the beauty of the woods and the Pond, which hold a promise of a sublime life beyond these basic needs. The game follows the loose narrative of Thoreau’s first year in the woods, with each season holding its own challenges for survival and possibilities for inspiration. The audience for the game is broad: from experimental game players to lovers of Thoreau and Transcendental literature. As such, the game offers more opportunities for reflective play than strategic challenge. The piece has a subtle narrative arc, in homage to the original text, which is not an adventure of the body pitted against nature, but of the mind and soul living in nature over the course of a New England year. The huge potential of surprisingly realistic survival game suffers from obsolete visuals, even though it’s on purpose here. The gameplay is downgraded by the boring mini games –the become boring due to a lack of new elements in the second part of a game. The game-improving highlights are a storytelling, voice acting, ambient sounds and fantastic music. Walden has the best chance of succeeding with Thoreau fans, both new and orthodox (they should stay alert though).

Nice virtual experience based on the famous Walden book. It would be better if we can travel faster in the later part of the game, and maybeNice virtual experience based on the famous Walden book. And this is a game about really just trying to enjoy nature..
You can go through multiple years, the seasons change, youll get letters, theres a light survival aspect here as youll have to collect food, mend your clothes, gather fuel and wood for your home.. but I say light because these things hardly matter…
if you let them go nothing happens except youll faint of exhaustion.. but this takes a long time to happen..
other than that.. its just explore and soak in the surroundings..
this game having early ps3 graphics though make this a bit hard.. but eventually I lost myself in the world, collecting books for inspiration, finding animals and plants to take notes of, collecting arrow heads and listening to henry ramble on about the area you found yourself in…
    it’s a really relaxing game..
    though this is about it..
explore the foods of the pond, a woods that isn’t all that thrilling to explore…
I feel like this is a hard game to recommend if you havnt read the book and thought it would be kind of cool to live it out…
I personally though aside from the brief moments of relaxation didn’t really enjoy it…
I didn’t find the dialog to be interesting.. I didn’t care for the letters or fishing for cash to buy items from town
I had the most fun going on the book hunts my homeboy in cabins that teleports from fire to fire would send me on…
but after I found them all, I was pretty over the game.
    I give Walden, a game
    a 5/10
