Verne: The Shape of Fantasy is an incredible tribute to Jules Verne, crafting an enriching narrative with creative nods to the author’s work, set in a unique and visually appealing version of our world. While the gameplay can be somewhat elementary, and the story is occasionally too concise, it deftly entices you to keep going and discover how the plot will unfold.

Verne: The Shape of Fantasy from developer Gametopia is a fascinating adventure that uses a classic author within their own classic tale to push a good story while supported by beautiful visuals and sounds that harken back to 90s-style gameplay. That gameplay works for the most part, though some more direction with puzzles and a more balanced story could have worked a few more wonders for the overall gaming experience.

The steampunk-styled world of Verne: The Shape of Fantasy provides a fun way to ease lovers of written fiction into interactive storytelling. It could have been written by Jules Verne himself, and although never very challenging, it is intriguing enough to keep more experienced gamers glued to the screen as well.

Verne: The Shape of Fantasy tells an interesting story with beautiful graphics and a charming atmosphere, yet the gameplay can feel a bit lacking and repetitive at times.
  5. 70
Strong visual design and an intriguing world help keep Verne: The Shape of Fantasy afloat, though a handful of missed tricks with the gameplay do threaten to sink it.

Verne: The Shape of Fantasy isn’t a bad game by any stretch. There are some neat moments and ideas, and the pixel art style is a delight, but the overall experience does little to stand out among the crowd in a genre teeming with creativity.
