This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Vampyr had a ton of potential that ultimately went to waste.

First the good, the story is interesting and well told with fantastic voice acting, the location is old school London which is always a fan favourite so no complaints there. The NPCs feel alive and are very fleshed out, and if one of them should die or be killed you do notice an effect on the town, depending on how important they were.

The downsides are numerous, with poor optimisation leading to lower than expected frame rates, severe hitching/stuttering and an overall feeling of choppiness, especially in certain key locations. The combat is very clunky, with the KB+M controls especially feeling awful. The enemy lock on system doesn't work correctly, and will constantly cycle through targets if you barely touch the mouse, there's no way to disable this behaviour so I finished the game without using the lock on feature, which wasn't ideal. The camera also has issues which made the combat feel even more cumbersome at times.

A major issue is the XP system, you gain the bulk of your XP from feeding on civilians, if you choose not to feed you're incredibly weak, which makes the game frustratingly difficult, but if you do decide to feed well good luck at the end, because the last boss scales with how many people die during the game, and they become impossible to kill from my experience. I faced them at level 37, while they were 51 (their maximum), at this level deficit they were unkillable, the devs really need to tune this scaling as it's just not balanced right now, and can lead to you not being able to finish the game at all.

Overall my lasting feeling is one of disappointment, I've been looking forward to Vampyr since it was announced but it just didn't live up to expectations.

It is clearly missing some love and polish, lazy animations, boring combat. After the success of Life is Strange I expected a more compelling Story, but this is just boring cliche and didn't manage to get me engaged right from the start, I am just sucking blood from the first enemies I met, like it is the most normal thing in the world and no chance to spare them...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Vampyr has been a game that I awaited with excitement for a while now, and upon its release I jumped right into the game to explore my life as a Vampire. While the game at first holds nothing special, the combat being pretty generic, the dialogue of the enemies and the interaction of the main character with rats or doors for example being extremely repetitive, just like the types of enemies you have to face. There is this rush of excitement when you get dressed on the boat and get to interact with the workers of the Hospital, your mind starts thinking of possibilities of what the game holds. Only to explore the game and be sorely disappointed by the RPG elements of the game .Only a few weapons available in the game and if you want to deal damage you can only go with 3 of them(for my play-through at least). absolutely zero customization of your costume or your weapons or having a little logo added to the hideouts, the game is extremely linear in its fashion, however it presents itself as a role playing one. the combat system is one of the most annoying things to deal with, often you need to learn the move-set of characters by heart because there they do not show what kind of attacks they will do, hitbox issues to go along with this. movement in the game was also buggy and often one key would get stuck to only move in one direction and readjustment was required. the story is a good one if not a little dull at some points, the world building is excellent, greatly imbued with magic through the amazing soundtrack and sound design. That is essentially what puts the game together, aspects of the story and the music. Sadly only one of your choice matters, kill citizens or do not. You can be forgiven for one of the killing but the ending is still grim. the game implies that your actions have consequences, that the fate of the districts lie on your choices but they do not matter. feeding on the civilians is very fun and my first civilian kill was on a boy. I talked to his father Joe Peterson and he said that he did not know what he would do without his son, so of course i killed his son. the father went missing and i felt very unsatisfied in how the only thing that comes of from you killing people is their relatives go missing and the percentage of the district goes down. Later i found Joe had joined the Guard of Priwen and i thought oh great i remember this guy, maybe we can get some closure but we didn't even exchange a word, he just died. In order to get the most out of feeding on the civilians you must unlock hints for them, even do their side quests, which attaches you to them a little, which is a good part because it shows you the evils of your doing and hopefully making you feel bad. One of the pillars who offers a lot of XP tempted me very much to embrace him and get that sweet power, but i held it back and "saved" the district. But my choice didn't matter, not really. But if you decide to go and kill and pillage that is a fun way to experience the game, but with so many upgrades, there isn't really a good way to get to the endgame of Vampyr, and that would be fine as you would finish the game and do a New Game Plus where you don't have to get the Mesmerise levels up so you wouldn't waste as much time but there isn't even that, you have to start over as a weakling. In conclusion the game is wonky, the story is alright, the music is great, the combat is ok at best and horrible at worst, the choices you make mostly do not matter. the game promised choice and consequences and the only consequence it delivered was the a blow to my excitement Expand

    - Beautiful graphics in general with great work on lighting and shadows as well as badass-looking combat and abilities visuals.
    - Original approach to a storyline walkrough - drain everyone and become the most powerful monster ever, or try to calm monster inside you and stay human as much as posisble, solving quests through talks and helping other people. Both ways have own pros and cons.
    - Noticable inspiration from Vampire: The Masquerade

    Cons:
    - Repeative combat animations.
    - While story itself is great there's noticable lack of charisma and character depnth in NPCs.
    - Some not very rational aspects of combat and movement in both human and vampire forms.

Vampyr has mixed reviews from both critics and players for reasons. It's still a GOOD game, but it looks and feels like pretty much unfinished - and that's why I personally think it's simply overpriced. But if you personally love vampire games in general - you should take a more deep look on it, as most likely you'll truly enjoy it despite of its flaws. Buy it with a decent discount and you'll be fine.

An enjoyable yet flawed game. Vampyr has a great idea, however, the execution isn't anywhere near expectation.
The game obviously took inspiration from Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, but the characters give me the feeling like they're being forced into the game, excessively repeated animations, uninteresting dialogues and poor facial expressions all but immerse me into the game.

The story isn't bad, but the medium of that story, the characters, ARE bad. Despite the emotionless inhabitants, the world itself is beautifully crafted, a gloomy, plague-ridden 16th century London coupled with blood sucking demons is a match made in heaven.
The combat is sub-par with your character, Dr. Jonathan Reid, always underpowered if you chose to be a good vampire and didn't kill anyone, which isn't very enjoyable of an experience since most semi-boss type enemies can pretty much finish you in 1 or 2 hits, you'll respawn, but your items don't so if you want to stand a chance at a particularly hard fight, you'll have to run back to a safe house, craft some meds then return, sounds tedious? Because it is.
Overall recommendable for fans of Vampire: The Masquerade or fans of vampire stories in general, you'll enjoy it all the way through or get bored half way through, like me.

At another time, my ability to run was canceled, becoming stagnant on an exclusive floor inside houses. The layer that showed possible places to be "teleported" simply disappeared and was not rendered. I wasted a considerable amount of time until I realized I needed to turn the game on again - and the layer appeared. Making changes that change the lives of NPCs is a lot of fun, but there are few endings and the criteria for them are doubtful. Some dialogues are repetitive and the whole story is presented by the extra texts, much more than in an interesting interactive way. There was a lack of more choices of moral choices that would really shape the character and other consequences - I see a lot of missed oportunities to make quests more interesting than searching for a missing item. Healing the same characters every time is annoying. A vampire who doesn't know how to crouch or jump is also uncomfortable.
In addition, the idea was great and the title is unique. I would like the company to take everything into consideration to launch a new one.

The game just betrays itself when it goes against these core values but its obvious it does it because of the low budget.
I really would like to see this developer do another game like this but with a much bigger budget, being strict about those rules, no random nameless grunts the game doesnt treat as humans, no forced one way solution to anything, etc. But they seem happy doing those braindead walking simulators with forced propaganda to colorful hair dumb teenagers, a pity.

Gameplay: The game is split into 2 parts, talking with NPCs and Combat. Talking with NPCs inst much really, its just for progressing the story and it doesnt do much than just telling you whats happening and sending you to the next place. Combat is "Ok" at best, almost all the weapons do the same thing but have different stats, the abilities are cool but by the time you get them you are already almost finished with the whole game. The enemies are straight up copied and pasted through the map, they all look and act the same and you will fight them a looot. This game also has a very bad case of artificial difficulty, they made all the enemies tanks with health and kill you in a few hits, while thier moves are very basic and easy to dodge and easy to memorize, same thing with the boss fights. The gameplay is also very repetitive.

Story: The story wasnt bad really, but any choice you make for the story doesnt really affect it as much, but at least the overall story is interesting and has some good things going for it. The characters are also just "Ok" they werent amazing or special in any way, but they werent bad either.

Sound: Pretty good, the music was nice and fitting through the whole game and the combat sounds werent bad.

Graphics:Pretty good, the charcter designs and world buildings all look good and even the UI looks good.

World design: Way too many "This door doesnt open from this side", and I hate that I couldnt find my way to some quests without using a guide to see where I needed to go.

Fun: Yes you can have fun playing this game, but there are many games like it that are more worthy of your time and money.

Your role in the game is to discover why you were turn into a vampire while still trying to hold on your humanity and save as many people as possible, all while groups of hunters and monsters attempt to tear you to ribbions.

The entire concept is actually really good, but it has been implemented poorly as there is a complete lack of polish to the game.

There have been times that dialog spoken and subtitles do not match, as if the voice actors couldn't properly remember what they were supposed to say. Sometimes, there can be multiple vocal dialogs going on at the same time, making it hard to understand who is saying what or what is going on.

Characters have what appears to be almost completely static faces, It's almost impossible to be able to tell how they feel or what they are thinking based on looking at their faces. There are cases in which characters may be talking but their mouths don't even move.

Most of the game enviroments feel like they are nothing more than cattle paths, pushing you to a specific location or place. A bigger issue arises when locations are built maze like and you are never quite sure where you are supposed to go. Add to the fact the quest tracker for the game is complete garbage and it can be a overall frustrating experience trying to get a job done.

For a game that likes to tout that your decisions and choices matter, a lot of times it feels like the developers (or in this case the writers) often try to shoehorn you into many decisions to meet whatever criteria they have for the writing of the story.

As RPGs go, I never really felt immersed in the game, because I couldn't put myself in the role of the main character and the game refused to allow me to make choices that I would want, instead simply forcing the character's opinions on me. What makes this even more frustrating is the game never really gives you any clear ideas on what your choices will do or how they will change the landscape, comebine that with a completely unforgiving save system that refuses to allow you to back track.

Combat is the worst part of the game by far, especially with the stamina system they have in place. Playing as a vampire you should feel powerful, but often everyone else around you is more powerful than you in almost all aspects. What kind of vampire gets tired after swinging an axe two or three times? I mean honestly!

Enemies are often at much higher levels than you, putting you at a constant disadvantage. Expect to die. A lot. You'll constantly encounter quests that are 5 or 6 times out of your level range, the only way you'll know they don't expect you to be there yet is by going in to an area and dying. When I bought this game, I wasn't under the impression this was some sort of Dark Souls knock off.

It really is a beautiful game under all of this rust, but I would never be able to recommend this game to anyone at it's full retail price. If you can get it at a discount (like I did), go for it. Otherwise I'd suggest you wait.

If you don't kill people for their blood and exp the game will be too hard to beat so you're pretty much forced to do this, which in turn has a negative impact on the districts etc, it just doesn't make sense. The most off putting thing about the game is the combat system. You can't hit anything unless you target it and when there are more than one enemy it simply doesn't work. You'll spend most of the time in dialogues and running between districts while trying to avoid boring combat (shadow veil skill will be your best friend). The game can be hard sometimes if you don't want to kill any NPC but sadly not in satisfying way - boss fights feel like copy-paste with minor changes. Technically Vampyr feels unpolished - I experienced a few crashes, some visual and sound glitches as well.
There are, of course, things that Vampyr excels at - atmosphere is great. Streets of 1918 London are gloomy and unwelcoming, people sad and distrustful. Soundtrack is a masterpiece. Main character is well written. I really liked Jonathan Reid and his journey as a newborn vampire.
All things considered the game deserves an average score - 5/10. If you're considering buying it, wait for a sale or humble bundle - it's not worth a full price of 60$.

A painfully average game that could have benefited from more production and development time. The story is fairly interesting: you play as a retired military medic forcibly stricken with an acute case of vampirism in an early 20th century London. Your new goals become acclimating to your new bloodthirsty affliction and curing a devastating plague affecting the city.

Combat is simplistic and not very engaging, though I wouldn't say it's terrible. The skill and crafting system feel a bit forced and are a quizzical addition to the game. I would have rather they focused on building the world better which is the main gripe I have. A game like Vampyr heavily relies on an immersive and intriguing world filled with untamed exploration and exotic characters. I quickly felt funneled and rail-roaded, with the illusion of an open world broken almost immediately. Any doors that diverge from the main path were always "locked" and many buildings were simply inaccessible.

Overall, I believe the game has great potential if the developers were to invest more time in fixing issues and making positive changes. As is, the game is not particularly bad, but it fails to impress, especially if you have high expectations. I would say the game is worth about $25.00, so I suggest waiting for a sale or for the price to naturally fall with time. Believe me, you won't be missing much.

An action role playing game by the developers of Life is Strange, Vampyr follows the story of newly turned vampire Dr. Jonathan Reid who needs to find a cure for the citizens of London in 1918.

While the premise is great, execution is poor. A clunky combat system mixed with poor voice acting lead to an ultimately mediocre game. Developers praise that every choice has consequences but

I was excited before playing this game because there weren't play-worthy games about vampires but now I'm really disappointed because it didn't live up to my expectations.
The atmosphere and environment were probably the only thing that I really liked about the game. Victorian London was portrayed well. Diversity of characters and the interactions with each one of them were admirable.

Combat system seemed good at first but after some time it became boring. The 'Vampire' abilities during combat could be much more creative (Something like abilities in Dishonored).
There were too many dialogues! This was fascinating and boring at the same time.
Animations were also creepy at some point.
I think the developers forgot to add a 'Fast Travel' option! The map is designed in a way that you must go from certain alley to reach a district; Which means that if you choose a wrong alley, you have to return all the way you've come. And at this point, the game becomes boring and ridiculous.
To sum it up, Vampyr is an absolutely disappointing and unnecessarily long game that needed to be polished (Actually A LOT of polish!). 'The Sinking City' and 'Call of Cthulhu' have a lot in common with this game. Same kind of atmosphere, wasted great ideas and unpolished. So I'd put them in a same category.

A horror action adventure game with cool duels, an impressive atmosphere with the need to think about the consequences of your actions. Unfortunately, the final experience is not perfect. [Issue#287]

It feels like the script was written by three different people. One’s responsible for all these cringeworthy lines, another came up with some truly interesting characters, and the third one thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to preach his values: for example, at one point our strictly-rational atheist doctor will have to confess his sins. Vampyr can bewitch with its atmosphere and conquer with the skillful delivery of a quality story. However, the RPG and action parts didn´t succeed, and the intended main pull in the form of heavy choices, whom to kill and whom to let live, is also lost to the lack of impact of your action. Although the game can entertain in the end, it often disappoints instead.
