Excellent game if you like playing god. The music is great, gameplay is solid and even in 2009, 8 years after buying this game, I haven't gotten bored of it. I could not recommend this game more to anyone, and here's hoping the soon to be released Tropico 3 is as good as this one!

Amazing, amazing, amazing, and simply amazing. Love playing this game so much. Beautiful graphics, stunning scenery and architecture, interesting story and great musical score. Definitely one of the best "build your city/society" type of tycoon-ish games I've played. Excellent!!

Tropico 1 is, even 13 years after it's release, really fun to play. I loved this game as a child, and even now the graphic part of the game is still decent, while the gameplay is just epic! The newest version definitely has some more options, but if you buy Tropico 1, you'll still get tons of fun for just a few bucks.

I've played the heck out of this game. I have to say, it is a really enjoyable and fun experience. You can micromanage everything. Unfortunately, the fun runs out rather quickly as there is not a whole lot you can do past a certain point. Overall good game.

Bring on "Tropico 2"... more interaction with the people!

One of the games of my childhood. Really loved to play it back in time and I still play it sometimes, along with Tropico 2. Unfortunately, the newer parts do not have the unique spirit the first part had.

Beautiful graphics (as for 2001). Nice and smooth gameplay, good tutorial, you're getting into the game quite fast. If you like games with indirect control this game is really for you. Although economy simulation balance is little bit more on casual side, not on hardcore one. But anyway, game is really funny and definitely should have a try.

Tropico is a fantastic city builder.
It allows you to build and manage your island paradise. You control the fate of every single one of your citizens without being able to actually tell them what to do. However you can lead them in the direction you want.
Every island you play can be a completely different city. The Cuban flare of the game can really carry you away. The game

The game difficulty offers a wide range but most scenarios are very tough.
Few games are as rewarding as Tropico - and the original is still the best in the series.

This is like SimCity with politics. The game suprised me with it's many political options. I wish you could build your own leader in every strategy game like you build it in Tropico. Graphics are nice and they are still ok, if we remember that the game came out 8 years ago

One of the best games in history. Brilliant atmosphere, lots of great ideas. Definitely needs a real sequel, better than the weak Pirate Cave.

Its like a version of the Sims but you don't control the people - the people kind of control you. If you don't make them happy, they will revolt. But it is a great game - Tropico 2 is sure to be better. :-)

    Great game:
The atmosphere is perfect, it is not only caribbean, but it is also funny to read the manual.
Gameplay is very good, you need some hours to understand the mechanics and there is always something to do. The best part is, that you need to think strategically, but also need to do some micro management. Even as an experienced Tropico player I still discover some good ideas, but

Graphic is...2001 ;) So dont expect much. Anyway you cant change the resolution to 16:9, what is unfortunate. And there are no mods in internet.

  1. The addition of real politics, planning, and consequences to the decision-making process adds a level of suspense not present in other building games.

It may be a bit heavy on the micro-management, but if you’re at all interested in the God game genre, you’ll be hooked on this game for a long time.

Tropico passes as a strategy game - just don't expect it to rock your world. [July 2001, p.58]
