Its an intresting game with a decent premise but ultimately there isn't much depth and you run out of things to do quickly. There just isn't enough to do, and the scope is too small so even when there is stuff to do its always the same variables.

    Pros:
    - Fun approach with great voiceovers
    - Many points to be taken care of during a match - Campaign holds a lot and serves as a tutorial for all the possibilities of the game. - Playing in Sandbox with countless possibilities and difficulties for me was the best part of the game. - Huge variety of types of policies/economic models to be implemented, including being able to mix.

    Cons:
    - Some problems that arise in management don't make much sense

    The Good:
    - it's a fun, and funny, simulator where you play the role of a tin-pot dictator. It gives you a bird's eye view of a tropical island, and you build buildings, one at a time, to create an economy, keep people happy, and manage the direction of your little island nation.

    - I feel like the developers learned from Tropico 4, which was a bit repetitive, especially since you had to restart each mission from scratch. In Tropico 5, while you do restart from scratch occasionally, in general, the next mission starts again where you left off the time before last.

    The Bad:
    - you are continually shifting forward and backward in time, and from island to island. I was constantly getting confused (did I build building X? Where is it?). Fortunately, the game offers controls to answer those questions, you just have to root around all the options and you will find them eventually.
    - One big down side is that the budget information provided is nonsense. You only ever need to answer one question: how much surplus cash will I have per year? The game doesn't really provide this answer in a clear way, so you have to kind of intuit the answer. I think the developers could have done better on this point.
    - Also, I was constantly struggling to provide housing for the people. There were always homeless people no matter how much housing I built, and this felt a bit unsatisfying.

    The Ugly:
    - The scenarios are pretty zany, you may or may not like the sense of humour.
    - You might find the graphics and especially textures a bit low-resolution by 2020 standards. It can be hard to identify buildings sometimes due to poor texture quality (even when zoomed in).

As someone who doesn't play much such games, i can confirm a hard time with Tropico 5. The Tutorial is no big help so the Story Campaign is not enjoyable. Many times i know what to change, but not how. The game lacks in interessting mods and options. I didn't play it more thab 5 hours.

The basics of the game are intuitive but most of it depends of your luck...

You can build the same way and have different results.

That's a way to simulate different games but it results to be boring...

Short sum: After playing 1-4, you either think yourself a hardcore tropican or a casual player who wants to see what 5 (or 6, now. It plays out like a huge, hours-long tutorial where you have no freedom, but in a 'legal' way.

That might not make sense, so think of the 'legal' way as a police officer serving a warrant or a summons. You dont actually HAVE to submit to your arrest, or show up in court. You have the option not to.
But you dont. But you do.

That is tropico 5. You can build a city. You can play it for fun. But if you arent playing STRICTLY within the missions, you wont even get another hour into it. You have objectives and they are.. EXTREMELY time sensitive.

Example: So you arent making enough money to support your society. Cool, easy. Make some cheap farms/ranches, make a few trade deals, wait for the money to trickle in. Keyword trickle.
Trickle is fine, trickle is comfortable. When I make a city.. in ANY GAME... I, you, ANYONE... shouldnt be in a rush. You are planning the entire thing. You are painting your picture (of society.) But if you arent doing what the game tells you, you will be punished sooner. Later. Unrecoverable punishment.

In simcity, if you didnt plan out a district the way you liked it, well... it still functions.
If you built it just to satisfy the 'trends' of RCI (residential, commercial, industrial), you are just filling space and then you gotta course-correct that, later.

In Tropico 5, if you've played the previous versions, you already got your butt kicked and learned it in the previous games, so maybe you want a challenge and here it is! Tropico 5 isnt city building, it is mission mode where creativity and freedom is punished.
If tropico 4 was too easy, you could just turn the difficulty up.
In tropico 5, you leave it on 'normal', get your butt handed to you.. play another couple times, turn it down to 'very easy' and say WTF, am I really doing this? and unlike so many games where the real tutorial is finding out over 10 playthrou... wait I cant call it a playthrough, you didnt make it through. We'll call it a play attempt ~ you attempt the missions, make it thru a couple and find that the city building part now plays like a mobile game ~ HERE IS THE TUTORIAL PLAY IT THIS WAY AND RINSE REPEAT HAHA ISNT THIS VERSION GREAT!
No. It isnt. Play T4 or T6, but in T6 expect the exact same empire issues, rebel issues and progress wipes. Happiness shouldnt equate directly to votes, the problems shouldnt be fixed overnight simply by throwing up 3 more houses, a tavern and a church right where the homeless shacks are.
In a city builder, YOU FIX PROBLEMS OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME! THIS GAME RUINS TROPICO!

This game becomes broken and unwinnable once you hit the cold war. Huge disappointment, later eras were clearly not play tested. Population becomes broken so you cannot fill your labor, and immigrants only come 20 at a time, so you can't grow. Give this game a skip.

I have not been engrossed and entertained that much by a full campaign since Stronghold (I'll save you the effort: that was in 2001.) Reminiscent of the excellent board game Junta from the 80s, Tropico 5 doesn't reach the same level in either mechanics or satire, but still provides for a good time.

It's colourful, looks great, sounds great, blah blah blah... Actually the hook is in the variety and ease. You have a large building menu, several NPC aides, various resources, trade routes, policies and whatnot. You play on small islands for short scenarios and come back to them in different eras, when things are unlocked. That system feeds your sense of progression and discovery, and is cleverly and comically integrated into the story line. Said story line provides the best jokes, and managed to make me laugh at loud several times (not such an easy task, I confess.)

Warning ! Combat is autonomous. Even as a general, you can't affect it manually. To me it's a plus, but to some of you it will be a limitation. I treat it like a natural disaster: plan to avoid, repair after.

Now, a few things and flaws that do not affect the overall quality, mostly because I categorise them as fluff rather than failures:

    - I tired long ago of the abuse of American pop culture references, not because they can't be funny, but because they are everywhere and always the same. Surprise ! The game actually comes from Bulgaria. Does that mean there is no Bulgarian humor ? Even old communist jokes would feel right in the context, and might feel fresh to Americans (I do understand aiming at that particular market.) More importantly, you don't reach greatness by quoting others but by creating your own memorable universe, which others will quote.

    - While it's nice that the interface lets me use a gamepad, it took me a while to realise that not everything is accessible and that sometimes a mouse click is required.

    - Clearly, some strategies are much better than others once mechanics are grasped. For instance, why spend money on depletable, polluting or demanding resources when I can rely entirely on a few plantations ? Well, I suppose I can pollute on purpose; at least I've got the options.

    - I've never had to import goods, never needed an embassy, a prison... I discovered the factions at the very end, by accident; an interesting read, but still unneeded as all there is to winning elections is to watch the happiness ratings. The Swiss account is pretty useless also. Nice to have variety, although it would be better if it felt important.

Finally, a few reasons why it's a good game but not a great game:

    - Terrible overlays don't let me see clearly where I build, as the vegetation obstructs my vision. Also, road junctions suffer from odd limitations.

    - Constant interruptions by events means I have to remember to pause the game every time I want to check a building or character. Else I'm kicked out of windows. Or worse: a window pops up exactly when I'm clicking, and I end up making a general decision without ever knowing what it was about.

    - I do need a big blue library. From the start. I must research Constitution to become independent. If I don't I lose, because the Crown will stop extending my mandate anyway. Inexplicably.

    - Strangely, playing as a tyrant is not only useless but actually difficult, whereas playing a democrat is a breeze. It seems like a repeat of my comment on strategies better than others, but here I find it a major flaw considering the theme of the game. In a totalitarian regime, I spend my money fixing destroyed things while my economy crumbles. A strong army and police seem to motivate rebels instead of scaring them. As do assassinations. Which are strangely expensive by the way. Closed borders never stopped immigration. Tyranny also granted me my only US invasion attempt, proving that American banana corporations had nothing to do with the notion of banana republics.

    - And the pièce de résistance: the mechanics fit the campaign very well; they do not make for good standalone missions. The system of eras forces you to replay the colony without the excitement of discovery and with most buildings and technologies locked out. After the campaign, Tropico 5 is repetitive and I quickly lost my interest, even trying out other maps, tactics, constitutions and whatnot.

Recommended to play the campaign. DLCs unimportant as usual.

Now other reviews tend to indicate that I should upgrade to Tropico 4. I'll probably do that.

I guess this last point makes for at least *some* sales in the land of the free where being spoonfed with the false imagery of how the world is constituted is not only a well selling concept but at this stage, probably necessary to keep things up and running all in all, you now, so people don't go haywire and overthrow institutions and all.

Oh and the number of DLCs... lol, gg devs - if the actual game being **** isn't a mockery to presumed customers this **** move is. You deserve shame and flame - or are you really just trolling Kalypso? Jesus ****

Aaaaaaaanyway; the setting is just obnoxiously immoral by all means - I prefer mayhem and GTA style violence or the charmy evil that Dungeon Keeper was first to set out and propose and conquered a whole generation over banalizing and trivializing _real_ historic atrocities, such as the impoverished and totalitarian rules of Latin America and the Caribbean in the shadow of the so called super powers and besides the setting, the whole music/voice/imagery is burlesque, distateful, out of touch and immensely disrespectful to all my fellow latin american brothers and sisters. I spit on your project Kalypso, and I mourn that my hard drive ever saw your filth inscribed on it's disc.

However it does, after all, revolve around a tropical island, which is nice.

Kalypso did not randomly decide to change the game so much, but more like fans were complaining how 4 was the same game as 3 and acted as if Kalypso was trying to get money without changing anything. The 10 I give is NOT by evaluating all its points ad polish, but because like 3 and 4 gave me a really nice enjoyable gaming time.

    Now with my thoughts:
I am not giving this a 10 because I feel it is perfect. I am because I do not agree with all the people giving it negative points for the wrong reasons. Tropico 4 was my favorite Tropico, but that is because I played it before Tropico 3. Because I loved that game so much, I remember being really active in their forums. People would always criticize how Tropico 4 was carbon copy of 3, that was much easier and not as fun. Be it because Tropico 4 was my first, all I felt with 3 when I played it was, that it has smaller maps and was indeed a bit harder.

With that said, I just want to say I did enjoy both 3 and 4, but 3 felt like a lesser version to 4 and I was one of the rare people to say that, since I was one of the smaller group that played 4 before 3.

This is what I see on here. People that have played the previous versions are all attached to how 3 and 4 played and now that the game changed finally, they seem unhappy. I find Tropico to still be fun, even not as much fun as 4, but the game play is NOT my problem. Amusingly enough it is just the voiceactors, which is obviously quite unimportant.

Afar from the game feels different and plays different, which happened because the fans kept asking for the game to change, because they felt Kalypso were lazy and just were reusing the same game, trying to get more money from it's fans. Now that the change finally came, probably some of the people asking it and of course other people that did not want it, complain. Changes obviously bring unhappiness, since people that were used to something feel weird about it and because the new changes are unbalanced, even some newer players find them flawed.

Kalypso in my eyes, as a fan of many Kalypso's games, is NOT a perfect company. I do not know what's their budget, or how they run things, but the games from it, feel like they have less polish than other companies. That makes people either hate their games or love their games, since a lot seek for perfect games, nitpicking to details a common gamer would not care about or pay attention to. But thankfully when it comes to bugs, they do try to fix them and kill them, even if at times it takes a bit too long. But in 2016, I can say safely that bugs is the norm of games, be it because there are so many different hardware hardware setups and OS and unknown factors.

Even if to me it will never be the same game, I still enjoyed it. Have fun be it you choose to get it or not!

Adds multiplayer and better graphics at the price of having fun. $10 - $15 is reasonable, past that and not so much. It's literally only but a shadow to what Tropico 4 is. I do like the Tropico series but as always, it's now at the point of anything new is just going to be crap. Hopefully this is the end of series and they go on to something new or else make Tropico 6 over the top - I kind of personally hope for Tropico in Space or something, something a little different. Oh, and avoid the DLCs, they're stupid. You get a building an outfit and maybe a very stupid and short mission. Not even worth $2, at the quality they are it should be a free update - or just simply already in the game.

    Not recommended. Get Tropico 4.

EDIT: I take back what I said about "not recommended" I do kind of recommend it. It isn't horrible, it's just a bit disappointing if you've played previous Tropico games. But, like they did with the other games was they added in what should've already been in-game via DLC. Grab it with all DLC around $20-$30 (or lower) is a good price. No DLC isn't bad but you'll understand what I mean in my review, it's very lacking in buildings. I won't even go into explaining how dumbed down the rest of the gameplay, just read some of the top reviews as they explain it a little better.

Players can use armies to attack each other to slow down their progress, but main focus is building and economy. There are more multiplayer modes, but the one mentioned is the best fun. Game speed is swift enough to finish the match in reasonable time.
Mini-DLCs are nice - if a slightly expensive - addition and come usually with a new map, costume, building, random events and a challenging scenario.

Yet the key elements of Tropico are missing. I mean, let's be honest here. Tropico neither invented the tinpot dictator genre nor did it define it. What made Tropico Tropico was the atmosphere. That music mix of Salsa and Mambo that made the whole thing feel like you're in some Caribbean Island. The advisers and radio announcers that are ... well, somewhere between dumb and hilarious, while being absolutely sincere and serious about their outlandish ideas.

And of course the variety. Tropico 4 set a new level of insanity when it came to building variety. There was simply so much to do, so much to explore, so much to try, and every path you could decide for somehow worked out. Some better, some worse, depending on the island you were on, but no matter whether you wanted to lead a true banana republic, an industrial powerhouse or a tourist trap, any of those worked out, and for all of them there was more than plenty of buildings you could choose from.

T5 scrapped it all. The music was replaced by boring elevator music, the voice acting feels like they simply had their staff put on fake accents and read some lines without any kind of enthusiasm or even just simply reading it to get done with it. But the main beef remains with the buildings. Yes, you now have various epochs with different buildings, more or less, but in total the number of buildings has been reduced to ridiculous numbers. Firefighters are now housed with the police, the various "supplemental" buildings that augment those that actually produce something have been axed, in a nutshell, the game has been dumbed down considerably. As if that was necessary.

As usual, when I notice a game of a series being dumbed down beyond recognition, I check whether it is now available on a console as well, and as usual, I don't get disappointed. Of course, we have the usual culprit for harebrained interface, dumbed down gameplay and mediocre graphics. The game is now available on X360 and PS4 too. Who in their sane mind plays a game like this on a console? With a controller?

But it seems the lure of the consoles market was stronger than the effort to not ruin the name of a franchise.

Tropico 5 made things easier and more straightforward. You don't have to worry about things as much as you had to do in Tropico 3/4. While Tropico die-hard fans may find this unpleasant, I (as mostly a casual player) found Tropico 5 more enjoyable than Tropico 3/4.

That aside, campaign was really nice (more or less Cuba throughout history) and as already said, overall gameplay is

Graphics are nice but I have to say I'd like to have multiple models for (for example) houses and such, having every single house looking the same kills a bit realism.
On sound compartment I have to say that things are not as good as graphics. Effects are often not good, not as much as unpleasant, but still not good enough; music feels repetitive after really a short time.

Recommended for casual players, die-hard fans may get disappointed, wait for discounts (graphic is still better than Tropico 3/4).

not only no improvement over previous tropico games, but it was also steps back from tropico 3 or 4
follow up mode was removed which i enjoyed greatly from previous tropicos and something feels missing after playing 3+ hours.
graphic is not that great and no decent tutorial whatsoever to new players huge let down of this year pros: - a little improved graphics - multiplay if u enjoy

huge let down of this year
    pros:
    - a little improved graphics
    - multiplay if u enjoy playing vs other players
    cons:
    - general vibe of the game is it is steps back from t3 or t4
    - no significant changes in gameplay. all too familiar to seasoned tropico players. gets boring too fast
    - no follow mode
in a word , the series needs to push for major changes and new formulars

A travesty to the Tropico series Avoid where possible..

Kalypso are on a free-fall... They care not for the legacy... or the fans... or their own decency...

they care only.. for the almighty dollah $$$$$$
They released a half assed game hoping to artificially inflate it with DLC... only kids like this crap because they've never played the original/

Solid, engaging campaign is full of humor and shines especially during the Cold War era, but unfortunately fades in the modern period. [08/2014, p.75]

Dictator sim Tropico 5 offers a good strategy experience that is fairly easy to get into, compared with many of its competitors. The colorful graphics and music sets a nice tropical island tone and occasional laughs can be had due to the funny dialogue. However, compared with the best in the genre, Tropico 5 feels a bit monotonous at times, in particular towards the end of a round.

As a total package, it's a great starting point for new players. Gameplay mechanics like diplomacy have been simplified, so it's pretty easy to understand for newcomers.
