Torchlight is an action role-playing game developed by Runic Games, featuring a wide range of weapons and armor to mix and match for character customization. However, the gameplay experience can be inconsistent and monotonous in some aspects.

One of the main concerns about Torchlight is the game's difficulty curve, which seems to spike dramatically starting from the 30th floor. This can make the game frustrating for players who have grown accustomed to a certain level of ease in the game up to that point.

Another questionable aspect of Torchlight is the variety of missions available in the game. There are only four types of missions, which can be repetitive and limiting for players who prefer more varied activities. Additionally, all missions are given by only four NPCs, which can limit the sense of discovery and exploration in the game.

However, Torchlight also offers a wide range of weapons and armor to mix and match for character customization, which can provide players with a great variety of options to create their own unique playstyle. Additionally, the trading and item-selling system can provide players with a way to monetize unused items and obtain money for the items they need.

In conclusion, Torchlight can be a fun game for players seeking a linear, story-driven gameplay experience. However, players who prefer a more varied and challenging game may find some aspects of the game limiting and repetitive.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fun, fast paced hack and slash game.

Torchlight is a clone of the game FATE from 2005 but still manages to create its own atmosphere and feeling. In general, it is like any other Diablo based game. Kill enemies, collect loot, level up, get some mad skills and repeat.

It has a story, but it is not that interesting. Just another villain that needs a good slaying and who is waiting for you at the very depths of the game world in the story mode.

What makes Torchlight fun is the effortless way it is played. Use portals if you need to go to town or let your pet take the journey while you go on with your adventure, the combat system is good and when you hit an enemy you can hear the slash or bash you made with your sword. Also, the easy way of selling, buying, hot keys for potions and skills etc. makes it really comfortable.

Torchlight has simple cartoon style graphics and nice music to get you in the mood of playing. The sound effects are good and makes this game somewhat stand out from FATE and other hack and slash games.

The game can be very repetitive. Not because it is a hack and slash game, which goes for all of them, but because you progress in “floors” rather then levels or maps. The themes change after every ten floors, but the layout is mostly the same for all of them. After floor sixty, you reflect on your life and the fun is starting to decrease. On the other hand, when going for the achievements the game has to offer, it keeps you (or me at least) motivated to complete more and more floors.

The main issue I had with the game was, because of its repetitiveness, to find a good purpose to go on. There are achievements like I mentioned, but other than that, when you kill the boss in the story, it is just endless floors of the same stuff over and over again.

But overall, for the price, this is a fun game with hours of content.

Good game for those who like the Diablo 2 style.
But after the main campaign (which is cool) it gets very repetitive and has some achievements that are too boring.
But it's worth playing the main campaign with all the characters.

I love this part in Game of Clones where Diablo exists and is great and beloved, and little Torchlight is also there and just happy to be included. Torchlight is Podrick. Also like Podrick, Torchlight ultimately finds itself in a place it's not nearly qualified for, but we'll let that slide since he's just so adorable.
You might think that intro harsh and you'd probably be right. However,

You might think that intro harsh and you'd probably be right. However, I am prepared as usual to back up my statement, and I couldn't resist the clones joke once I came up with it. So the intro stays!
Torchlight is Diablo-Lite. Everybody loves to point out that 2 of the Diablo developers were on the team behind this game, and I literally just proved that I'm no different. Sh!t. Nonetheless, I personally found that the qualities I enjoyed most in Diablo are not here. So let's get this out of the way.
Torchlight does make little improvements over Diablo, mostly in the area of convenience. Also, doggo is life, and this game has doggo. But you know what really sells Diablo over its contenders?
    Atmosphere.
You can make a fun, top-down action RPG any day of the week. But to really pull of a oppressive, gut wrenching feeling of suspense and hopelessness is hard. Torchlight does not do this. Diablo: Fun for the Whole Family Edition has no atmosphere and, quite frankly, looks more generic than a white guy playing Wonderwall on acoustic guitar. It's cool to like this game on its own merits, but to compare this to Diablo? Don't make me laugh. It's not like I make you laugh, so return the favour.
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk Torchlight in its own right. I burnt through this game like an Australian bush fire goes through Koalas. I beat this game in ~12 hours, and that was about 4 hours too long. Usain Bolt's record time ain't got nothing on how quickly I beat the first few levels, and 1 complete orbit of Neptune ain't got nothing how long the final few levels felt. I can understand increasing the length of levels as the game progresses in order to increase challenge. But by golly, sir, if the mechanics of the game aren't advancing along with the level length and enemy health then boy howdy, sir, is the shallowness of the increase more noticeable.
By removing the small reward that is reaching a new level to break up the pace of the game I now feel like I'm never progressing because what I'm doing right now looks exactly the same as what I was doing an hour ago. The mechanics and challenge are exactly the same as they were, and not even the floor number has changed to reflect my progress. I find the term 'fun run' to be an oxymoron, and the final levels feel like a 'fun run.'
I played the alchemist character and decided to go with a full summoner class structure. To give this game its due credit, I loved that I could run this build. Between class abilities and spells, which are separated to allow extra nuance in mix builds or even dedicated builds, I was able to have an army of up to 20 pets/minions at once. Not gonna lie, das pretty dope. During the game's ludicrously easy initial levels I didn't have to raise a finger. I just walked around reading and enjoying fine wine while my, rather multicultural, squad run around smacking everything out of my path, the way a bullet train removes deer from the tracks. I was actually saddened by the later levels when my dedicated summoner with little health and defence suddenly became priority target number 1. Enemies would routinely ignore the invasion force headed their way and chase me to kill me in 1-2 hits while the Benny Hill theme played, and Statler and Waldorf sat in the corner saying things like:
    "Do you think he'll survive?"
    "I don't think we'll survive."
"You think the demons will kill us?"
"No, watching his play style will kill us."
    It was depressing.
The most depressing thing, however, was the final boss. I won't spoil anything plot wise because that's not possible. To spoil a plot first there has to be a plot. But I digress. Do you think there's a list somewhere with all the absolute DON'TS of game design? I certainly hope not, because that means the devs just ignored it outright, or worse, used it as inspiration. This boss fight ticked off every pet peeve of mine:
    Bosses with ludicrous health
Bosses with no mechanics of their own, just adds
    Infinitely spawning adds
    Regenerating health
If you could measure the painful force of bad boss fights in Richter scales of magnitude, this guy'd be a Tohoku.
I make the game out to seem worse than it actually is by focusing on what I disliked. But gee whiz, sir, my arguments aren't invalid. If you're like me, stick to Diablo. But if you're not a neurotic Oblivion NPC with a deluded sense of humour, then give it a go.
Not kidding about that multicultural thing. I had dogs, demons, zombies, skeletons, robots, and sentient gems and swords. I practically mained the United Nations of Torchlight.

It was that addictive and fun and did everything right. To this day, I think it is my favourite series in the ARPG genre, enjoying it way more than Path of Exile that I recently played. Its potential shortcomings, story and lack of multiplayer, did not bother me as ARPG storylines are to be ignored and I never play online anyway.
It took elements of previous games and improved upon them: spell-casting, town-returning, good-selling pet; immediate item comparison

I played Torchlight for a lot longer then it took to simply beat the final boss, which should be testament to it's sheer addictiveness. I've started playing this wonderful adventure as a hobby on my laptop, but ended as AAA, later I've noticed that it came from the Diablo 2 developers; it is obvious that Blizzard couldn't buy talent in Diablo 3 because these guys were the real brain behind Diablo 1 and 2. This game feels as a "light Diablo clone" but it came from the original developers so it is not a clone, is just what they do.

Even quests that should spice it up a bit are a joke, basically a robot that wants you to kill a monster every 2 levels, rinse and repeat, a mage who wants you to bring him an ember ever few levels, rinse and repeat and that's it. You even stop caring about the story or other characters, because there is nothing to care for, you just go deeper and deeper, killing more and more hordes of enemies, selling junk. Torchlight basically took the core mechanic of Diablo, but stripped it of all the things that made it interesting. The story is barely there and what is there is just for the sake of being there, nothing really interesting. I'm also not a big fan of the 3D cartoonish artstyle, doesn't look appealing to me at all. Enemies are not very varied, but honestly you don't even care what you kill you just kill hordes and hordes of something and by the end I was really glad it's over. I liked some of the improvements such as your companion pet which you can send to town to sell junk and by far the best element of this entire game is the music by Matt Uelmen which screams Diablo 2. That was the only thing that preserved it's quality. Other than that I don't think this is worth playing and it definitely didn't convince me to continue with end game content or play the sequel, I think I had enough of mindless killing of hordes of repetitive enemies in generic 3D cartoonish environments. No, in 2014 I prefer something more substantial, more interesting, this is not good enough honestly. 5/10 Expand

The stash and shared stash is something that also raised this game to my liking.
So say you beat the game hurah! and u want to play on hard mode and not lose all your weapons there u go the shared stash will allow you to redo the game but keep ur kick butt weapons.
Hud- well the hud i do not completely understand everytime i try to put an abillity inside it doesnt all i hv is a health potion an a pre-set abillity i dont even want! that plays a factor in the losing .5%.
the fighting in this game is a little off perfect there is a bug that will make your character stand still and not move and you wont be able to drink a health potion either truly something the ruins the immersfulness of the game.
lastly the pet, the pet u get is something that seperates the game from other you start off with this pet and hes with you all the time when ur in a sticking sitiuation your dog/cat/etc.. will come and save your butt. if you equip your pet right with the right spells it will help A-LOT.

A very fresh game, and finally something besides Diablo II (which is still the best RPG Slasher-Looter-Level_Upper) which is worthy the gamers' attention. Tons of stuff, loot, weapons, skill trees. And considering the price no brainer!

The style, graphics, sound, music and even aspects of the gameplay of Torchlight are all outstanding. But I can't give it more than an average 6 because the game is so repetitive. Which is still pretty fair value for a game price at $10 (and often on sale for less).

It's unfortunate too that the dungeons aren't more dynamic and interesting because the classes and talent systems are really well done. Your class has three skill trees so you can make them do very different things. Want a warrior that casts powerful spells? No problem! You just won't be as strong as a mage. Your rogue can go swashbuckling sword master or a long distance hunter like hero, it's all up to you. The gear is also cool and well itemized. But ultimately I felt like I was leveling up for no reason. None of the dungeons were challenging so I could simply auto attack my way through everything.

Ultimately I wanted to fall in love with torchlight, but after the excitement of a new crush wears off, it's time to move on.

Shallow gameplay. Poor class selection. Overly cartoony. No private servers means hacked characters galore. No multiplayer code. Very unambitious title from some of the developers of Diablo 2. Fun for about 20 hours or so. There are simply far better alternatives out there.

Torchlight is simple, fresh and fun RPG. Many of its elements resemble earlier Diable games. Storytelling is a bit lacking and the game can become repetitive towards the end. If you're looking simple and fun game to play for weekend or two, this is worth buying.

Torchlight is an inoffensive dungeon crawler. Inoffensive because it doesn't do much wrong but it also doesn't really inspire in any way. Of all the spells, magic weapons and enchanted armor you'll find, what this games needs most is a Potion of Give a Damn.

At first I enjoyed the gameplay, particularly with the opening town exploration and "buddy" mission to kick off the story, but that all ends within an hour of play. After about ten hours I suddenly had an epiphany that it was undeniably repetitive and it didn't really matter what I did. It very quickly became a run-of-the-mill level grind with almost no story development. 99% of the time you'll be left-clicking bad guys or adjusting your inventory. The levels also started to get visually so repetitive it was easy to get turned around and accidentally back-track.

The sudden realization that all the armor, stat and magic advances my character had made really were pointless was enough to move on for greener pastures.

A great pick up and play game for casual gamers or if you want get mods to go more hardcore. Fun and entertaining for a few hours but with no real storyline, can get boring after awhile. Gameplay is hack and slash, using mouse and hotkeys for spells. You get a nice pet for a companion and there are three characters to choose from and three class trees for each.

I'm a huge fan of action RPGs, and this game is definitely the best one I've yet played. It has everything an RPG should have: three different classes, three different pets, tons of weapons, armor, and enemy types, and a magical overworld to top it all off. If you're a fan of Diablo or any other dungeon crawlers like it, pick this up for $15 on Steam. You're guaranteed a good time.

Extremely mediocre. I don't understand the hype behind this... how did it receive so many awards? It's basically Diablo 1's gameplay (including character customization/growth) with WC3/WoW graphics. Very derivative and only worth playing if you can get it on sale. Oh yeah, and no multiplayer. If you're looking for a Diablo clone please try Titan Quest or Sacred instead.

A Diablo clone, but much less linear. Unfortunately, there are so many sidepaths that I felt I had to take in this game that I eventually leveled my character higher than the normal campaign's monsters, such that I trivialized the content for myself. Torchlight is a watered down Diablo 2. If you have played Diablo 2 you will have no problem playing Torchlight. Since it is from the original Diablo 2 creators many of the names, abilities and skills are even called the same. I really liked the look of it, and it played great. See, when I play any RPG, I like to actually create a character, rather than choose a preset and just train him. But once I started playing, I started really getting into it, specifically as the Alchemist, as the spells were an absolute blast to use. I didn't really play as the other two classes though, but I had no real desire to. Yes, the gameplay does boil down to left click on enemies, right click to use an assigned spell/ability, and the number keys to use other assigned spells/ abilities or potions. Simple? Yes. Fun? Yes. Easy? Not as much as you'd think. I've died plenty of times because I was hit by a horde of enemies all at once. The story is pretty straightforward, evil guy causing problems, you must kill said evil guy to restore peace. Over-used? A bit. But the dungeon designs are creative, expansive, and a tad bit confusing, which adds to the fun. The loot drops are fun, too, and the mini-boss enemies are a nice touch. All in all, an entertaining game. I just wish it had online multiplayer. Expand

So I tryed the demo for torchlight, and instantly preordered Tl2 once I finished. With that came the original and it is amazing. Tons of loot and the levels change scenary just as you are starting to get tired of them so it has great pacing. The combat is also extremely satisfying and has excellent blood splatters. It is also very addicting in the same way wow is, you constantly want better loot and to level up. And don't listen to the crap about how budget games are short, I tend to have the most fun with indie games and I have sunk 11hrs into the game, and I am on floor 22 and I don't know how many floors there are but there is an achievement for getting to floor 50. The reasons it doesn't get 10 is primarily the difficulty. There first few level can be played one handed and after that it does require some concentration but as long as u keep chugging healing potions which the game gives you plenty of will ensure you won't die. Though I am only playing on hard so the higher difficulty might improve this. Also it is such a rich and vibrant gameworld and as a lore addict I would have appreciated some more backround like what is ember used for? And what is happening outside of Torchlight. A bit more of a story than "Bad stuff is happening, lets go into this dungeon and keep on going deeper till we find it" would have been nice. Oh and multiplayer. but TL2 looks like all of this will be fixed, well I don't know about the story and the lore but one can hope. Torchlight is a superb game for anyone that is a fan of the dungeon crawling genre. Torchlight is by no means a "Diablo Clone", in fact, I would propose that is instead "Diablo Evolved." The modding community for Torchlight is phenomenal; a testament to this is the community developed modding interface RGFHotSpot. This simple program presents you with a list of mods in database, and upon installing multiple mods, the tool can then be used to check for conflicting code that would prevent the game from running properly while running certain mods together.

With Torchlight now being a gifted bonus for pre-ordering Torchlight 2 on steam, there is absolutely no reason to pass up playing this awesome game.

Tell all your friends, "Torchlight isn't a clone, it's Diablo Evolved!"

If you loved Diablo and Diablo II, you will love Torchlight! Great graphics, great gameplay and lots of fun! Pets add an interesting dimension to gameplay as well. The story is sparse, but decent. Can't wait for Torchlight II!

Combat feels very impacting, and the there's a perfect balance between fun and difficulty, though like most ARPG's it can be a bit samey, but hey that comes with the genre. The story is a bit meh and never really grips you but that doesn't matter, you won't be paying much attention to it anyway. Anyway if you like ARPG's you owe it to yourself to play it, it's a hoot. I don't understand how this game can exist at all. It is a carbon copy of the WT game FATE. From the graphics to the gameplay to the interface. EXACTLY the same. While it is a great game, I can't fathom how they avoided copyright infringement! All the same, I recommend this game (as well as FATE) to anyone who loves Diablo cloned dungeon crawlers.

Is this game perfect? No. It's a bit repetitive, unbalanced in moves (some awesome, others useless) and combat (most levels easy, last few very hard), very little actual story/ dialogue and no multiplayer. That said this game is amazingly cheap for the gameplay and length. The graphics while bright and colorful are well done, the effects are nice and the sound is awesome. Is it a Diablo clone? Yep! But so what? Diablo was one of the best games of all time - torchlight contains all of the epicness of d2 with a streamlined interface and more vivid graphics. For 15 bucks you really can't say no, you will have hours of fun figuring out how to turn yourself into an unstoppable train locomotive of gory death - and once you do, turning an entire room with 20 little guys and two big bosses into a bleeding pile of corpses in seven short seconds of screen shaking and big numbers gives you the spectacle that defines the action rpg genre. No running around forests gathering plants, you run dungeons and slaughter evil for your gear! It doesn't get a solid 10/10 because during the main questline you have to go through five-dungeon level jaunts of samey-looking environments and that gets old. In addition, there is so much white trash loot that it becomes cumbersome to pick through (since you can't just pick it all up and deal with it later because your inventory is small) in the middle of a dungeon, and that takes away from the flow of the game. Torchlight is a tribute to the genre of action RPGs - but if you have never played an action RPG before, do yourself a favor and play Diablo first. Expand

Torchlight is a decent game. It follows in the model of Diablo hack and slash games with more cartoonish graphics. The game is well polished but the gameplay tends to get very repetative in a short amount of time. If you enjoyed Diablo you will likely enjoy Torchlight but you just won't love it.

I put about 15 hours into this game and for the most part found it very rewarding. For the price there is a lot of content and the looting is worth the effort. This game is Diablo 2 stripped of the community, saddled with a pointlessly obtuse stat system, with the most dull characters ever. You get a melee warrior, a ranged archer, and a wizard. They even kept the same composer as Diablo 2 so the music will sound nostalgiac, but the mediocre art design (note that I am not criticizing the game for being cartoony, just for being ugly) will ruin that immediately. Furthermore, the lack of multiplayer means that gear doesn't matter. The game is poorly balanced for enemy levels. If you just go down the main dungeon, the game should mostly be fine but you will outlevel the enemies by the 10th or so floor. If, however, you complete some of the optional side dungeons that open up, you will overlevel the content and the game will largely consist of you mindlessly clicking on, and one shotting every single enemy without even the slightest fear of death. It becomes unbearably dull. So what we are left with is a few generic classes, stuck in a pointless Diablo 2 clone with no multiplayer, grinding for loot that never matters using a leveling system that rarely awards with the player with new abilities and always forces you to mindlessly dump stat points that are never really choices at all.

This is the worst Diablo 2 clone of all time. Avoid. At any cost. Even free. Do not waste your time.

Good to play while waiting for Diablo III. Torchlight is simply yet another Diablo clone and... the Diablo clone par excellance at the same time. The most Diablo-ish thing in it is Matt Uelman's music, simply adorable and magnificent! With phenomenal music and great art direction, combined with an addictive combat system, it's hard to step away from the keyboard and mouse after the first floor.
  2. Runic hasn't dumbed down the experience, they've removed the fluff and distilled it down to the truly fun parts. Add in a few innovations and what you've got is Torchlight; a game that raises the expectations for dungeon-crawling action RPGs by being not just fine-tuned but affordable as well.
  3. The core of the game is its combat and character progression, and both of those are outstanding. Torchlight might not be breaking any new ground, but the soul of Diablo hasn't been so ably captured in years. You won't find much that approaches Torchlight's worth at its $20 price point.
