This game has nothing to do with Witcher. it uses popular IP to sell a mediocre game, which has to be some sort of a gateway into Gwent p2w CCG.

Such a fun and great little card game that you can explore and enjoy! I love the lore and seeing things in the Witcher universe from a different perspective. I hope they make more games like this!

It was released in 2018. To me this game proves just how exceptional the Witcher 3 was. Gwent, this card minigame from W3, was so good and catchy that it was made into a standalone online game, also called Gwent. Thronebreaker, was released alongside online Gwent and served as a very clever way of getting mainly offline playerbase interested in the online game. I can't speak for online Gwent, but Thronebreaker works very well on its own. The style of gameplay is very interesting: you travel across a map with a character you control, collecting gold and fighting enemies, just as you would in any other RPG, but this time the battles are all in the form of the aforementioned Gwent card game. I am not the greatest fan of computer card games, but I have to say, this time it was a fantastic idea. The first thing that really excited me about Thronebreaker was the graphics, it is really beautiful in its unique painted style, just the map itself is a piece of art, the game font is fantastic and suits the world very well. Music is also very good, non-intrusive and with some well known Witcher themes. Even the menu, a thing that I usually do not really notice, is very nice and polished. The talent, passion and enthusiasm of the developers really shows. If I must mention some negatives, I would say maybe some minor uncorrected bugs, like the infinite reload-battle loading screen. I do not know how exactly the AI is computing its strategy, but in more complex battles, it certainly takes its time. Some people criticize the difficulty for being too low, but honestly, on highest difficulty, it was about what I was expecting from such a game. Which brings me to the puzzles, which is one of the best features of the game. Some were pretty hard and I once I had to look up the solution online. But the best aspect of the puzzles is how the developers were able to incorporate so many different activities into a card game. No microtransactions and no SJW. I played on PC and it took me 34 hours to beat the game, for the original price of 30 USD I consider that to be a fair trade.

The (non-Netflix) world of Witcher has incredible appeal to me and this game was a great spin-off from the usual hardcore RPG Witcher games. More of this please. Final Verdict: 90 %

An excellent game that use Gwent card game for fighting. The story is really good but involved almost no Witchers to speak of. Everything is pretty good but I had a pretty strong distaste for the puzzles. They were badly explained and only 30% were understandable. On top of that you have 4-5 of them that are stuck on the main story. I still give the game 80% because the story is great.

    Pros:
+ Suprisingly engaging story with many twists. It is building on story from the books but is not altering it.
+ Amazing soundtrack. You will end up humming it along during card battles.
+ Stylized graphics that is a good fit for this ganre. It looks well in every situation.
+ Variety of styles of the card battles. Some have special rules, some are logic puzzles and some are just different game built with the mechanic (e.g. there is a "memo" battle).
+ Your choices changes some aspects of the story. Especially who will be at your side during the journey.

    Cons:
    – Very linear structure of the game. Every map was a straight line. There was no illusion of open world or branching paths.
    – "Lesser evil" choices. Sometimes I felt like I was punished for trying to be good. What is worse, that was done after a few hours and without warning.
    – Random "standard battles". Full 3-round battles were boring when there was no stakes. They were good for story battles, but boring while encountering a random monster in the woods.
    – Scaled map during overland travel. A village is a single hut and your army is represented with a model of queen Meve. I did not feel the scale or how my army grows.

Additional words on the story: The story is engaging and faithfull to the books. It does not alter but rather fill in blank spaces in the source material. There is only a little overlap with the story from the books but it is executed perfectly. If you know how Meve and Geralt met, you will be waiting for the moment and you will be excited when it happens. It is so much better from what Netflix is currently doing with the plot.

. There’s a lot of choices and consequences in the game that shapes the story in a meaningful way. In you enjoy philosophy the game provides a lot to discuss about that field of science.

    ---> Negative points:

. If you are a experienced card gamer like myself, the game itself is very easy at standard battles and story battles (even in the hardest difficulty). Just final boss in act 4 poses a threat.

. Graphics isn’t bad, but could be better. Remind me when game developers downgrade the graphics just to lauch it for cellphones later (which happened).

Such a great game. Graphically it looks very appealing, story wise it's very intriguing, and the gameplay is awesome. Gwent is a great game, which is very easy to understand, but still manages to create plenty of depth to play around with. The only downside to this game is the ending, which was basically unbeatable for me because of a horrible setup in the game.

I deeply connected with most of the main characters, which doesn't happen that often in games! The impact of the choices made in the game is so deep that at times it felt like the game was not written, but it was genuinely responding to what I was doing. The implementation of Gwent was fantastic, especially after I really got into it, but at times suffers from balance issues (nothing major though). Top it off with truly gorgeous visual game design and great music, and you've got a hell of a game! Unfortunately it started dragging for me after like 30 hours (out of the 47h it took me to finish it), because Gwent can be repetitive, especially after you figure out some good tactics, and there's not much else to it other than talking and collecting wood. You know, I feel underwhelmed by Thronebreaker, a game that plays like a gard-came that is packaged as a role-play game and presented as a graphic novel.. Due to space constraints I focus most on its most praised element ; the story.

The story is praised for being well written, but I beg to differ. I will not go into all the details, as there are many flaws and space is limited, but one example has Geralt of Rivia(the witcher guy) knighted by Meve for helping out in a battle. There is nothing leading up to that moment. A group of strangers helps out with a battle and Meve knights one of them out of the blue. Why is nobody else knighted? Perhaps she got the hots for him, but if so, it isn't told.

The story is riddled with these nonsensical moments that are made worse by the incessant betrayals. The art of writing a good story is not to attribute inhuman behavior to people, but to make them fail because they are so human. Take count Caldwell. When faced by a perceived unbeatable enemy he chooses to submit. Instead of making him a person who has to make a very hard decision, he is painted as a traitorous self-serving coward who is fat and lives in luxury. Why is not more made of the dark side of Meve? When she liberates her own country she might eventually cause the utter ruin that Caldwell tries to prevent. But no, at the end it is written that the Nilfgardian empire is unable to due to being overstretched. And with this the story has hit an iceberg and sunk. Meve was right from the start, for even after taking heavy losses, the much more powerful force that is about to fall upon her weak army disappears from the story. She didn't even need to have the magic ring drop into the volcano. A much better story would have been if Caldwell had been right after all and the enemy retreats because of civil war or the death of a ruler, or the effort is just not worth it, or the big baddy has too many enemies at the court.. The writers might even have presented the count as the one who actually caused the enemy to retreat by fostering that civil war or knowing well that their emperor was about to die. But the writers butcher all of this because they have to provide the audience a story in which the good are good and the bad are bad and invasions are prevented by miracles.

As a card-game the game doesn't excel. Your deck consists of only two smaller decks that you can expand upon and nothing more. You do get sets from other decks, but you cannot add to these or change them. What other cards you can acquire are tied to a handful of characters or the occasional special events.

As a role-play game the game is weak. Your character, queen Meve is a given. Options are often offered in a black and white manner and boil down to: attack or not attack, punish A or do not punish A, trust B or do not trust B. You are never informed beforehand about the consequences and you do not get the ability to find out more. You have to make a uninformed decision on the spot and hope for the best. Appoint a gnome as mayor to a town and he is as likely to burn it down as to make it wealthy. Invest money in an enterprise, you might see a tenfold profit or loose the whole investment. Trust an elf and he might reward you for it or lead you into an ambush. It is all a shot in the dark based on little information with no ability to find out more and with an arbitrary outcome.

The weakest aspect of the game is the warfare-element. Warfare is about making tough choices because you have limited resource.s The only choice you get to make is what cards you bring to the table in a battle and these are distributed not as a result of your choices, but as the game progresses. There is no strategy in this game. During the game you are a times informed that some battles come with heavy losses. However, you never see the effect of these losses . I was expecting to having to suffer a tremendous loss in men and means, to make hard choices, but these moments never came. As a wargame it isn't challenging.

Thronebreaker is not a bad game: it is a luxurious card-game, but it isn't as good as as it is made out to be. As such it is a good investment if you can get it for bargain. Maybe 10 dollars/euros?

The core of this game is the story, and an amazing one it is. Choice & Consequence, surprises, betrayals, vengeance, redemption... fantastic.
The rest of the mechanics, Gwent and exploring, don't rise to the same level of excellence, but they are more than fine too.

    - The map graphic quality is not great but not really a problem since the map is not used too often, compared to the time we play the cards.

Conclusion : one of the best games I have played. The developer and editor CD Project Red is really talented : the 3 Witcher games were jewels and Thronebreaker is the worthy heir. Other companies like Electronic Arts and Activison which make bad or average games should draw from them.

Brilliant story, excellent characters, beautiful artwork and atmospheric soundtrack. Every decision you are asked to make has real consequences, that you really end up caring about when they have such an impact on the characters you grow to love. This is one of those games that stays with you long after you finish playing.

Even with all of that, I love Meve and it is just a great character addition. You get to see some characters from Witcher and little references to it. You don't need the most intense of graphics to hook a player. Red Dead Redemption 2's intro is like five hours and I couldn't have cared less about anything. Within one hour Thronebreaker had me hooked. It does come off too easy and repetitive, but I was okay with that until the very end where it was really becoming a slog.

Let's also be honest though, this is Witcher on the cheap. CDPR can't churn out a full RPG every year so they'll probably do this instead. Okay, I'll take it, I'm a sucker and it's better than nothing, but still. Another potential negative point, Geralt is prominent in the title art and in the trailer as actually saving Meve's life before execution. None of this ever happens in the game. Geralt is actually in the game for about 12 seconds. I'm totally fine with this, Geralt could only be in the Battle of the Bridge scene and they call it, I liked Meve as a character. But it's generally not considered cool to trick your fans, and this was a troubling move from CDPR.

Overall, the game is worth it if you're a fan of Witcher, Gwent, or just want a thoughtful game with some good puzzles. It doesn't quite rise to the highest levels, but it held my attention for about 26 of 30 hours of gameplay. Given the mess that one has to go through to find a decent game, I'll go ahead and call this a big win.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a very rare deck building RPG. The game’s temporary exclusivity to GOG certainly didn’t help at release. Yet the game's story, aesthetics and solid gameplay mechanics push it to way above an average game and in to a worthy spin off of the Witcher franchize.

Very good game. While it is most often presented as a mixture of RPG, strategy and card game(Gwent), the truth is different. The most crucial skill required to explore whole Thronebreaker world is solving logical puzzles. There is a lot of puzzles with predefined deck, and these are perhaps the most entertaining card battles in the whole game.

There is a lot of puzzles with predefined deck, and these are perhaps the most entertaining card battles in the whole game.

On the contrary, the ordinary Gwent duels appear to be boring, especially after 20 hrs of gameplay. This is due to the fact that too many strong cards are available right at the beginning, and opponent AI does not combine cards well enough. There are some exceptions though, for example final battle is quite demanding. I strongly recommend you to choose the highest difficulty, because it is not a game you would like to repeat.

The strategy factor is minimal and confined to development of the camp. However, the exclusiveness of choices made in this respect is negligible - some are vividly better than the other.

What makes the game awesome is the storytelling, the quality of artwork (music, graphics, card design), the characters (Raynard, Gascon, Brouver Hoog), the unclear ethical choices put on player.

Some reviewers argue that Gwent is just a merge of 'The Witcher' with a 'Gold Mine', and Thronebreaker is just an advertisement. To some extent I share this opinion, but still the quality of 'Thronebreaker' is distinctive and the game is definitely worth its price.

The story is, indeed, very good. As are the handpainted visuals and the music. Gameplay, however, was disappoining. They bastardised the original card game into something that fits all, puzzles and story battles and normal battles, and lost the basic idea behind it.
The most important thing is: in a card game, I want to know the rules. In Thronebreaker, they are contantly changed, completely wanton, and the opponents never play by the same ones as you. Deckbuilding is oversimplified (No "theme" decks as in Witcher 3, just one in which you mix units for maximum cheese...).
The results from battles have no meaning whatsoever for the story campaign (just "win" or "lose", it makes zero difference if you win by 1 point in the 3rd round or steamroll your opponent by 83:0 and 167:0). No difference for morale, losses or resources spent.
Economy is meaningless, you just pick up resources like in a bad mobile game, buy every upgrade available and have tens of thousands of gold and building materials in the final chapter with nothing to spend it on.
MANY descriptions of special rules for puzzle battles are vague, unhelpful and sometimes plain misleading. And, all things considered, the balance is quite bad. Most battles are trivially easy, once you found the cheese in your deck, some puzzles are completely obscure, and the final battle is the utter opposite: A complete and totally ridiculous bag of silly cheats for an opponent, who breaks EVERY rule of classic Gwent, replaces every destroyed units immediately from a 90-card deck, randomly boosts his troops and conveniently draws an extra card-card or a silly, all-immune 75 power boss whenever needed. Can actually be beaten, by simply replacing the deck with a special flavour of cheese, but is, to me, no fun at all.
As I said, it's not bad, just...a bit disappoing compared to what i've come to expect from CDPR.

The many puzzles in the world on the other hand are fairly challenging and every single one forces the player to think about the game in a different way. The puzzles are definitely the most fun of the card game part of the game.
The 30-40 hours are well filled and even if the game feels a little slow at times, this adds to the dark atmosphere of the world.
Your choices have an impact on the world, your companions and on the outcome of the game.
The resources used for crafting our cards (or units) are never on the brink of running out, which makes them and some of the choices in the world feel redundant and removes most of the pressure that is suggested by the story.

The story is at the level to be expected of a witcher game. The atmosphere of a war-torn world is so vivid and real, the backbone topics of treachery and retribution, crimes and the necessity of their punishment are so persistent, that it is a pleasure to make choices. The latter are accompanied by distinctive characters and brilliantly-written dialogues. All of these make the "witcher-tale" deep, mature and really enjoyable.

Production quality is also at the highest level. Every technical aspect of the game may be put in the range between "excellent" and "brilliant". Also I experienced no performance issues or bugs in the whole walkthrough.

The "Thronebreaker" starts to lose points when it comes to core game mechanics: combat, puzzles, exploration and "technology", Combat is based on "Gwent: the Witcher cardgame" and it is ridiculously easy, even on the highest difficulty. Every meaningful deck design beats any battle with an enormous advantage. The exceptions are the final battle and maybe a couple in the fourth chapter, where some minor deck adjustments are necessary. The supremacy turns combat into a boring, tedious, time-wasting chore. When you battle similar enemies in a short period of time the effect is felt much stronger.

With no real need to improve the deck, the necessity to invest into "technology" (camp investment) also loses sense. The latter makes resource gathering redundant. Thus, the exploration turns into the following: time-wasting battles, time-wasting scrapping, bright story moments and puzzles. So the game value per se drops to range between 5 and 8, depending on how much you like time-wasting and puzzles.

What really puts the "Thronebreaker" into red numbers, is the downfall of CD Project Red from the user-friendliest company (in the blessed times of Witcher 1 and 2) to standard industry practices. The game is just a piece of "Gwent: tWCG" content (much-needed content), ripped off and and sold for an AAA game price, the price that is higher than that of The-Best-Game-Ever of the very same developer.

Fantastic story and well-written characters without a doubt. Game is incredibly enjoyable and would recommend for a great and interesting story. However, I will focus on the negative parts of this game:
    - No firm strategy: when you enter battle, you get a hand of random cards with the option to shuffle a few times. Since the cards drawn are all random, there is no decisive strategy to it.

    - No firm strategy: when you enter battle, you get a hand of random cards with the option to shuffle a few times. Since the cards drawn are all random, there is no decisive strategy to it. The randomness offers a lot of variety without a doubt, but it kills the need of a well-thought out battle plan. Instead, you end up forfeiting and resetting until you get the cards that you just need for the coming battle. There is an ambush-aspect in this game which should have been the only aspect that offer random cards. RNG is most notable during the final battle, where you need those specific cards you'll rarely get.
    - Can't experience it all in a single run: if you prefer to fully experience a game in a single run, then this game is not recommended for you. In certain situations you are presented with multiple choices, however choosing one option will autosave the game after the short narrative ends. Although this forces the player to properly think through every choice, it doesn't offer the full game experience. There is no quicksave and quickload option, meaning you are not able to find out what would happen if you chose option B instead of option A. There are choices that will impact you later in the game, however that is another matter and cannot be changed.
    - Repetitive: this game offers a steep learning curve for new players, but it gets easier to master after that. Once you've got a full grip of the mechanics, done quite a few puzzles and battles, it ends up becoming rather stale. The first few puzzles you solve gives you an amazing feeling, but as you continue to encounter them, it becomes bothersome and pointless.

    - Minor issues: conscripts that are given in abundance when you have no use for that many. Few bugs, none too concerning.

EDIT: the battle "upper keep" (final mission) is almost entirely RNG-based. You cannot win unless you get those lucky cards, and the opponent doesn't draw a card worth 75 and boosts by 10. Doesn't matter how well you've played, since luck is the only way you'll win and it is frustrating.

My first play was nearly 40 hours, quite a bit more than expected. The game shines in all of the most important aspects: excellent writing, music, voice acting, story and gameplay. It is clever and detailed throughout. You are rewarded for exploring the world. Like the Witcher 3, I was surprised at how many well-crafted funny and moving moments that the narrative was packed with. The new Gwent mechanics create plenty of strategic options, and the interface is beautiful.

So, why not a solid 10? Mostly because of balancing issues. I am a Gwent buff, so I started playing on the highest difficulty. Unfortunately, by the third Chapter--after only crafting a handful of cards, and even losing some of my strongest cards due to story events--my deck was unstoppable. I can imagine a less-experienced player having a few more growing pains, but there are some easy to recognize card combinations that are ridiculously overpowered here. For the last two chapters of the game, I was regularly winning battles by two to three hundred points--often destroying all of my opponent's cards in the process. The only challenge was the final battle, which required a mild re-tooling of my deck.

Another minor gripe was the game economy. Granted, I didn't craft much, and I explored a lot--but I finished the game with over 70 000 spare gold, 15000 spare wood and around 800 unused recruits. Maybe the developers wanted players to feel free to craft as they wished, and there are definite arguments for that. However, I hardly felt like a hard up and desperate battle commander. It wasn't necessary to make strategic choices with my resources, because I ultimately had more than enough to spare.

I should say, the puzzles were fun and challenging throughout (though again, easier in the later acts?) I think the game would benefit from exploiting the "build a deck to overcome specific challenges" theme...this is a strength of the Hearthstone expansions. Despite the excellent story--and the ever-present fun of smashing Nilfgaardians--the battles became tedious after two acts of one deck smashing everything sight.

So, all in all, an exceptional and polished game. As an RPG, it hits all of the right notes. As a strategic card game, it is mostly excellent, but in need of some re-balancing.

Amazing illustrations and art style, great story, amazing writing, superb voice acting.

6/10 card game. The core game play is just not good enough and drags the game down. It's not magic the gathering, it's not even a hearthstone. Puzzles go from easy to very easy, and "normal" battles are easier still. Didn't play gwent before in my life, selected highest difficulty, did not

But i still greatly enjoyed the adventure and story. So 8 out of 10 young dwarves mercilessly murdered in captivity approves. :)

Pros: Some puzzles are interesting and offering real fun. Early story plot. Letters that appearing in game makeing story more interesting.
Cons: No need to adjust the deck (except final battle). You can play anything on hardest level. Lots dialogues you want to skip without reading, especially later in game. Story is linear, your choices doesnt affect the story. It is only about what card

Many invisible walls makeing game "longer". You don't need to worry about resources, you ending game with zillions of gold. (hardest level). Dont have to craft like 70% of cards, you will win anyway. Camp improvements are mostly meaningless (army limit you dont need to rise, cards you dont need to craft). You will win anyway.

Game is quite slow and boring. Very easy as well. I finished in couple of days. Only time I had to adjust my deck was for the final battle. The puzzles are quite good and only nice thing about the game. The story is painfully linear and I found myself skipping some dialogues as they add nothing to the game.
Very average game, I was expecting much more.

From the graphics down to the game play mechanics and story telling, It is superbly made. I especially like the moral choices which actually enhances the game play more since walking around collecting items is what you will be doing most of the time. But, the game is far off from perfect. I do have some nitpicks that really disrupts the pacing of my game for the first half of my playtime. Some might agree with me on this one

It's the puzzles.Oh god,the puzzles. Im not gonner go in dept about it of it but basically to me it's just trial and error. You keep doing over and over again until you find the right solution and it can be repetitive at times. Finding the solution took me more time than it should for me to advance the game even though the puzzles are optional. I felt like they should have placed it in the middle of the game instead at the end of the tutorial since most players like me are still trying to figure out how the game mechanics works and a unfortunate soul like me stumble into one right after I've finish tutorial. I can't lie but there are some puzzles that are fun and kept me captivated.

Overall, it is a solid game made from CD Project and a great time waster if you have extra hours on your hands. The price I would say is just right with the additional 4k graphics pack( which is free btw) and oh, just remember that this game is a little different from the gwent you used to play in the Wither 3 The Wild Hunt. To me, it's just gwent with extra 'steps'

In many ways Thronebreaker feels like a 2008 flash game but made by a company that can afford to put a million or two into development. I love it!
It's a simple concept well executed, with enough card variety to keep me engaged for 30 hours, and a great story on top of that. It's a bit on the easy side but that doesn't really matter; I had a great time. I mean, it's more gwent, what's not

This game is a must have for every witcher games or books fan.

What was supposed to be a free singleplayer content inside gwent witcher game. Turned out into a great addition to the witcher universe and its story. Story depicts a Second Northern War from a very interesting point of view queen of Lyria and Rivia Meve. Game often makes you choose between two or more hard decisions.

Story depicts a Second Northern War from a very interesting point of view queen of Lyria and Rivia Meve. Game often makes you choose between two or more hard decisions. Almost every decision can affect the game in some way.
The game also adds some new interesting characters and stories which weren't known before. Everything fits very well to the harsh witcher series.

Gwent combat system is interesting and doesn't get boring for the most part. What i had a problem with is the difficulty in battles with your deck that you can upgrade throughout the game. You don't really need to build any specific deck for any encounters, not even in the hardest difficulty. You can steamroll most fights with random deck with no synergies. What made me stay interested in the gwent combat were the puzzles and custom deck battles which felt unique and some even challenging.
The only fight which was hard was the very last one. I actually had to change my deck to counter his.
Hopefully devs will make the future witcher tales more difficult in terms of combat.

Art style is unique and fits very well. Voice-acting and music are excellent and immersive.

Thronebreaker is a feast for those collectible card games fans who don’t care for online play or tournaments and instead would like to follow a well-written story that introduces an array of vivid characters and presents you with tough choices. [12/2018, p.56]

Overall, Thronebreaker is a revolutionary game within the CCG genre, and I hope other companies take note. With a 40-hour story to support an engaging card game, there's nothing else quite like it, and its unique nature is to its overall benefit. It's made me realize how much I can and do enjoy card games when they're done right.

A singleplayer version of Gwent, that sounds boring, but it actually is amusing. It's written very well and tactical it knows how to challenge a gamer.
