Comedy and horror are not two genres you typically expect to mesh, especially in video games. The Upturned ended up being a wonderful surpriseComedy and horror are not two genres you typically expect to mesh, especially in video games. The Upturned ended up being a wonderful surprise for me, being both capable of making me genuinely laugh, and genuinely yelp. Set in a massive hotel in the afterlife, you're tasked with making your way to your luxury suite on level 1434, but a series of technical difficulties means your journey takes a bit longer than you expected. This game's design works really well, with levels themed after places like shopping malls and arcades. Some maps are simple to understand, while others are maze-like and confusing to navigate, but both feel great in practice. Many of the monsters still managed to catch me off guard even towards the end of the game, and I felt that the overly energetic animations and speed of the game provided it a sort of slapstick feeling, adding to the comedic feel. I wouldn't say the game is perfect, but for a good couple of sessions I was totally hooked purely on the gameplay, and felt a very simple necessity to see what could be thrown at me next. Expand
