  • Summary: A desperate man needs to find the right antique to impress a rich relative, but his choice will have dreadful consequences.
The Shopkeeper is a point-and-click narrative game set in a space between the Twilight Zone, classic Lucasarts adventures, and Antiques Roadshow.

The Groundhog Day vibe in the end left me a wee bit disappointed.

The promised freedom of choice and replayability in this interactive story book is, unfortunately, paper-thin.

With lots of negative reviews it is a major incident I had played this game. Some of the main reasons people do no like this game: WrongWith lots of negative reviews it is a major incident I had played this game. Some of the main reasons people do no like this game: Wrong expectations: The store description says point and click narrative (not adventure), but also mentions Classic Lucas Arts Productions (which is indeed wrong).
People seem to be too stupid to understand what this game is about and where the focus lies (Fitting citation: "lost in a story without sense"): Lots haven't seen the right ending, which is eminent to the understanding. They are angry about the ever repeating sentences - but those are varying in little parts to supplement to the story (the Groundhog setting). And the playtime is short, about 3-5 minutes per try - but you will play it more than you will expect to get to the right ending!
The game is not as simple as it seems: There are lots of situations where the perspective is shifting (from the shopkeeper to the customer and back); the short playtime of 3 minutes per visit is really fitting to represent the setting as a hopeless scenery for the customer; all the objects in the game contribute with their little background stories to the whole, involving macabre stories. And yes - there are no subtitles: but if you don't understand the whole conversation, it's not a big problem; wait 3 minutes and the story begins again ...

Well, what's the conclusion: If you like a small point and click visual novel with a nice art-style, deep and black humor writing, an indie game with well done voice acting, where you try to buy an old antique for your mother-in-law in order to let her sponsor your business, then it's worth a try.
Be prepared for a bad-tempered mother-in-law, a marked-by-life shopkeeper and a family tragedy with a surprising end (the right one!)!
