There . . . is no gameplay. I truly, honestly, cannot imagine a person living on this planet for whom this game could be fun. To the game review websites giving the game something around 70/100 . . . maybe consider a different line of work.

The red lantern is a narrative/ resource management game. In this game, you will: Hunt, Fish, Set up traps, and find resources. This sounds interesting at first, but you will soon get disappointed. The gameplay is terrible. You just choose your options from a 2-4 list. Ex: Go left, or right on your sled. The hunting is just a quick time event, and trapping is just RNG. The game was about 2The red lantern is a narrative/ resource management game. Sometimes, a game would have been better if it was just an animated short. The Red Lantern is an animated short that would have been better as a game.

To even call The Red Lantern a game feels dishonest. Here is another sentence to make this review at least 75 characters long.

I was a bit disappointed with the ending because I think I was hoping that there was a twist or something more meaningful to find at the lodge. With that said, I still enjoyed the theme and gameplay and loved seeing how the relationships with the sled dogs played out and progressed on the journey.

Overall, The Red Lantern was a fascinating and unique experience. It feels like a modern version of The Oregon Trail but instead of traveling across a map and dying of dysentery, you ride behind a dog sled and die in a much colder climate. Creating a team of dogs and then sticking with them for every run until credits rolled was both rewarding and allowed me to connect emotionally. The Red Lantern does not provide the most complex inventory management but will almost always have you considering when to use which item. The loop of the game did begin to become predictable near the end, but The Red Lantern always brought me back for one more chance to find the path home.

The Red Lantern is a great experience. I love my dog sled team and playing the runs again and again only reinforced that. But I’m not sure the roguelite style stays fresh all the way through, and it can get a bit tiring and repetitive. In the end, The Red Lantern is not going to win a lot of awards for what it does and is, but it’s a unique take on the walking simulator genre that honestly has gotten stale and oversaturated.
