It has a great emotional story to tell, but its gameplay will bore you to sleep with its endless walking sections with nothing happening. There are huge areas to explore, but everything is 90% empty and the fox runs so slowly that by the second half of the game exploring seems like such a chore that doesn't get rewarded at all. Also the jumping animation is ridiculous.

Interesting concept, nice landscapes, the ice one was a bit... not good? I liked the artstyle too

On the first view "The first tree" is pretty mediocre game, with very simple and outdated graphics. But a great narrative and audio will make you feel very emotional at the end. Its one of the best examples of a video game becoming a peace of art.

The First Tree doesn’t have a ton of game play to it but it makes up for it with a fantastic story and voice acting. You engage in some light platforming and very light problem solving to navigate the levels. While this goes on you listen to the main character tell childhood stories to his wife. As the fox you can also optionally find mementos from the man’s childhood and collect stars which do serve a slight purpose later on but are still optional. The game works by combing these as on it’s own the great story that gets revealed as you are the fox would just be an audio book on it’s own and without the great story the platforming would just be a very simple game. Together they work better than alone. I do wish that more was revealed about the middle portion of the main character’s life. We learn a lot about their childhood and some of their adult life but not much for the gap in between. The graphics take two forms. While you’re the fox it is almost a cell shaded type world that while not overly detailed has a good style to it and is full of colour. As the man it is a more realistic style. That world is a little less impressive because it relies more on technical detail. It wasn’t an eye sore but at the same time won’t wow you. The music was also superb. I will also say that the few hints the game gives were well done. They didn’t spell things out so much as provide a drawing of what you needed to do which I thought was a nice touch. I am also happy to say that the keyboard and mouse worked just fine which isn’t always the case with some games with platforming sections.

I played The First Tree on Linux. It never crashed. I did notice one possible bug where in the options menu AA is listed as “unavailable”. The game auto saves at the beginnings of levels but it doesn’t say it is saving on the screen which would have been a better way to do it or simply allow manual saving. There was just one graphics option aside from resolution and the unavailable AA. There were no audio options, it would have been nice to adjust the music or voice volume on their own. Alt-Tab didn’t work. Performance wise The First Tree ran the gamut. For the most part it ran great but there were times where it could drop to the 50’s in frame rate and I have to say the graphical detail doesn’t really justify that. I want to blame Unity as their OpenGL games often suffer from this I find.

    Game Engine: Unity
    Graphics API: OpenGL
    Disk Space Used: 2.29 GB
    Input Used: Keyboard and Mouse

Settings Used: Ultra; 1920x1080; no AA
    GPU Usage: 0-100 %
    VRAM Usage: 967-2245 MB
    CPU Usage: 12-47 %
    RAM Usage: 3.5-3.8 GB
    Frame Rate: 58-144 FPS

If you enjoy games such as Firewatch; Kona; The Station; Tacoma or What Remains of Edith Finch you will probably enjoy The First Tree. You get great music; voice acting; story and decent game play as well. I finished the game in one hour and forty five minutes. It is worth it’s current asking price of $11.49 CAD.

There isn’t much to do here in this game but go forward, collect the stars that lead you to the next part of the game, soakin in the beautiful worlds, listen to the stories, and hope for the best for your little fox friend.
And in general this is a beautiful game, from its message, to its world,
I loved every minute of it.
Again there isn’t much here to this game other than an emotional experience through its unique story telling, but this is one worth taking.
    I give The First Tree

If the story holds, that's not an issue, but the story itself - unfortunately - didn't engage me enough. It was rather cliche and I-want-to-be-very-serious-life-drama type. I believe it failed. A possibility to send final words that can be found by other players was very nice. Expand

It's hard to decide the points on this game. It is very cozy and has a very good story, but it is full of gliches. and the mechanics are very minimal. Also, I don’t think it would ever be worth the full price, with so little playing time. Eventually, the ending became so cozy that I would rather recommend the game.

This game has really nice mood. The story is awesome and emotional, you want to know 'why', 'whats next' and 'how it ends'. I was crying when I played. Very good music and sounds - I have all soundtrack on Spotify. In this game there is no really much things to do but still I strongly recommend to play.

Pros: Short and scenic game. Cons: Needs to have more directional cues; I felt tedious needing to run everywhere.

A pretty good effort. Overall nice try, with some interesting twists. However, running around can be a bit dull. In the end I just waited for the game to end. I enjoyed it, but felt like it's trying to make me feel things I don't feel like feeling.

I loved the message I could give as a fox to their children, I loved the idea of a tree, I loved my slow journey during the beautiful sunset towards the tree and I love that it was so slow. It made me think and process everything, I even shed some tears... it helped me also to let go some things, to reassure myself. It was just beautiful, shoutout to the creators and whole team that participated in creating such a wonderful piece of game art. Expand

this is one of the most boring games I've ever played. The story is completely unremarkable, it is not interesting to follow the characters - it is a typical story about teenager, even the story about foxes is more interesting to follow than that. it's good that at least I took it for free, but the time spent on this cannot be returned. mark 2 only because of foxes.

Its a very boring and bland game. You are a fox looking for your three dead pups. The map is barren and there is nothing to do except collect some stars which do nothing. The only good thing is the audio clips scattered around as the narrator has a good voice otherwise the story he tells about his father is as bland as the game. Got it for free on Epic, otherwise, I wouldn't even consider playing it Expand

However that is the greatest weakness of the game. The story has no real direction and way into the game introduces a poorly explained reason to move on. The voice acting is not very good, but does get the job done. The ending tries to leave an emotional impact, however the build up is so bad that it does not work. The only positive of the game is the artstyle. Its use of color is extremely powerful and that makes the game look very eye pleasing. Unfortunatly the game does not deliver in it's other more important levels.

In my opinion, a lot of effort was put into making this game, it has a beautiful story, I think the design of the stages was ok, of course, except for the first stage, the lighting and graphics of the game were good in my opinion.
The narration of the story was accompanied by an excellent narrator, and I think the story of the game was written based on a real story

A fox traveling through a fairy-tale-like world alone is charming enough, but it is how the tale of this fox and a man come together that makes The First Tree so special. This is one of those games you must play before having it spoiled at all costs.
