I have played the 360 version and the pc version, I dont see how anyone would give 360 version a higher rating, when the pc version was 10x more detailed and will be patched etc... while 360 will stick with its sound bugs among others it's having.

How truly awe-inspiring this game would be if the AI weren't flawed and those sometimes not-so-sublte collision glitches were removed. Once the buzz of freedom ran out, I began wincing occassionally at problems both with gameplay and character creation.

First up would be the system requirements. even the latest top of the range computer can render this beast at 30 fps on full. thats with a crossfire x1900. therefore, people with relativly good pci 16s like 6600s are forced to dramaticaly lower the grapic settings, to the point where the game designers desired atmosphere no longer exists because you can only see as far as you hand, whereas the game allows you to see distand mountains. another is the stability. i would be happy to run this game on full grapics, even if i did get a steady 5fps. only problem, is that it will only last about 5 mintues before it blue-screens on me. Im sure this would change if you had a more powerful graphics card, but it forces you to lower your graphics to the point where it runs well AND dosent constantly crash. another, is that much like its predecessor, if you play this game to win, it gets boring very very quickly. you have to from time to time make up your own rules , and not use the idiotic AI system to your advantage. another is the extreemly short main story line. although there is many many city and guild quests to be done, i found it amazing that i had not even been made to visit evey city before finishing the storyline. I was amazed when i found out that i had actually finished the storyline, rather than just a small section of it, probably because of the length of the morrowind campain. Although im sounding very critical, another thing that annoyed me very much was the character animations. Very many of these problems carry over from ES III. The game engne is just too smilar, almost as though they have taken the morrowind engine and added new graphics and features, but more or less left it as it was. if they had delayed for another couple o months to fix these problems, the game would be endless, because evry little thing you do would be enjoyable, with the current release, all these factors leak through the whole "seamless RPG" thing and tend to make it less absorbing. Having said all this, the graphics and world in this game are amazing. Expand

This game is simply briliant. Not only are you free to do what ever you want but it is increadablly easy to edit the world that the game is played in. Like making weapons and armors custom for your charactor then placing them some where in the world. Most of all this game has beautiful landscapes, well if your computer can run them of course.

Cons: Requires some serious processing power, both CPU and GPU. The engine used is not very optimized. The main quest is way too short. The fast travel feature is easy to overuse. Heck, the fast travel feature was implemented in a way that eliminates some encounters that were present in Morrowind. Seems like encounters are few and far between now, perhaps the landscape is the reason why, Morrowind was a valley/pass/mountain landscape; Oblivion is a forrest/hills/pretty landscape. Thus, in Oblivion you can easily zig zag to your final destination, in Morrowind there was 1 path. The fast travel feature, once used once, is used over and over! Because, if you take a stand and hoof it to a location, you find you might run into a bandit camp, okay, 3 enemies, or run past an ayleid ruin (a long dungeon with no real 'loot' at the end) Overall a wonderful experience, but I am now 3 weeks from starting the game, I've sent one char through the main quest, got another char to 18 and through the mage quests, another through the dark brotherhood and to level 21, and most recently a vampire to level 9 and through the thieves guild quests, and I have college right now and other responsibilities. So -- yes, with fast travel the game goes fast. Expand

The game is great fun while it lasts, but after playing through the main quest and each of the main factions, you're just about done. Simply because Oblivion does it's hacking element more effectively doesn't make it an action game. I mean, duh. However, it has been 'softened' slightly around the corners - some fewer skills, fewer item types, and linear quest lines take this game further from its Daggerfall/Arena premise of a virtual 'world' in which anything goes - it is missing some grit and depth which the others had in abundance. But I cannot give this game anything but a 10, because this is still the best hope there is - the modding community is flourishing, and hopefully Bethesda will make TES:V deeper than this - though, I must stress, the guild questlines are fabulous this time around. I say, superior to Morrowind, but not to Daggerfall, which I where I'm from, actually. OMG - Daggerfall isn't in Metacritic! Why on earth not?? Anyway - I've played 200 hours, and will re-play when I harvest a couple of hundred mods and a better computer to take on the 512mb textures. Expand

As for an introduction I feel like I have to defend this design: Because an RPG is not based on some complex system of chance, defined by a series of attributes, which could not vaguely be understood by anyone who has not played a book or board RPG, does not make it any less of a "true" RPG. And just because the character's ability to aim/time is not only based on "2+1=3 (miss)", but actually is a reflection of the gamer's abilities, it is not necessarily worse than, say, Neverwinter Nights. Hybriding genres rarely brings anything good with it, right, but in some cases, like this, it brings a powerful combination, that delivers months of excellent gameplay. I, for example, did not go stubborn when the Total War series came out, even though it mixed my favourite genre (RTS) with the genre I found the most boring (TBS), I tried it out, and today it has a place among my most favourite game. Yeah, all genres in a hybrid has to give something up, but just because you can't have your advanced roll-a-dice battle systems doesn't make it a complete non-RPG. In fact, I have never felt as much in the role of a character as I feel playing this game. I guess the above paragraph filled more than the rest of the review will, but here we go: The game is, most definitely, the one that by standard is most customisable. YOU decide 100% how you want to look, much like The Sims 2, only the controls are a bit more advanced and hard to manage, you decide what path you'll take, how you would like for yourself to level up etc. etc. What I found most astonishing was the absolute free choice you have regarding how you make money, fight enemies and form alliances. If you want to make money fighting, join the gladiators and you'll make a swift 5000. Want to make money looting robers? Walk by the roads looking for bandit camps. Even as thief you can make a pretty descent living, as long as you train your Security, Alteration and Sneak skills. The choice is pretty much yours, and the best part is: You can do whatever you want, and are NOT locked to following any history as such. The game itself contains a lot of mini games to take care of things like diplomacy (speechcraft) and lockpicking, so it is, again, the gamer's skill and not a random number that decides whether or not you are successful. (Although you can choose to make an attempt based on your security skill alone). The reason, despite my complete obsession with this game, I only give it 9, is the severe amount of bugs existent. It annoyed me beyond reason being told to pay a fine of 1 gold EVERY time I spoke to a guard in the beginning. Although that bug went away after a while. Considering the graphics, I do not have a powerful enough GPU to run it at high/full quality, so I'll avoid commenting on it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think it's time for me to give this game the 10 that it deserves. Although I did not like the main quest (such a chore imo) which I did only to get rid of the extremely annoying oblivion gates, I still thought that the main characters (Baurus, Jauffre, and Martin) were somewhat lovable. When every one of them died at the end, Cloud Ruler Temple died. More bad: the wolves will chase you forever, which is annoying as well. HOWEVER, those are pretty much the only bad things about the game, other than it crashes whenever I exit. The world is so amazing. I love every single village, town, and city. The map is incredibly easy to memorize. The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks in games because you'll find that whenever an enemy sees you, the intense music plays and you'll want the peaceful music back again. The leveling system isn't very good compared to Skyrim's, but it will do. There are so many adventures to be had, like being kidnapped while sleeping and find yourself in the middle of the ocean on a boat, or you see a soldier charging into a fort and follow him, to find yourself in the midst of a bandit bust. There are so many locations, not to mention many more added by mods. Nexus Mods have anything from graphics mods to being a pirate. And Deserts of Anequina brings Elsweyr to Oblivion. Get this game! Why not, it's not like its $60 anymore. Expand

My favorite RPG of all time, I wish it would have been as in depth rpg wise as morrowind, and have as many weapon types but it makes up for it with tonnes of quests, really fun combat and a massive map that I'm still finding new things in after years of playing. This game will never be forgotten.

Oblivion makes the decisions while creating and levelling your character determine their ability after to succeed after levelling. Someone very good can make their character improve after levelling up compared to their surroundings if they do everything correctly. Otherwise, they have to compensate with skill in battle. I have spent hundreds of hours perfecting characters and maximizing efficiency and moving through the game at a normal pace allows this to still be achieved by the smart. Expand

I must say that this is another one of my all time favorites, the lore sucked me right in and I've been an Elder Scrolls fan/nerd ever since, reading every bit of information available anywhere about Tamriel. The graphics were outstanding for the time and Cyrodill was beautiful with its diverse cities and fantasy landscapes.
There are a couple of things that need to be scrutinized though.

There are a couple of things that need to be scrutinized though. For one, the main quest wasn't that entertaining and constantly closing Oblivion gates got old fast, it was also quite invasive, you were basically forced into the main quest right from the start. Another thing that needs to be mentioned is the auto-scaling system. Oh damn, those bandits are too strong for me, I'll just come back later after I level up a bit. What's this? How did they all get glass armor and higher level? And I'm dead again. Terrible game mechanic. Otherwise fantastic game everyone should atleast give a shot.

Compared to that, it's true that Oblivion felt quite a bit weaker, locations were a bit too monotonous, the interface a bit too consolized, faces terribly ugly, voice acting over repeated to death, game mechanics simplified and to my taste it all felt a bit too much like a kiddie fairytale sometimes. BUT... Oblivion was still capable to do what all the TES chapters do so well, immerse you in the world, make you forget the real one and let you enjoy the fantasy experience for hundreds of hours. While I wasn't a big fan of the leveling system where the enemies were leveling up along with you, it kept the challenge on par until the very end, also the economics and money seemed to be the best balanced from TES series, meaning you won't usually become a millionaire in a few days, but most importantly, Oblivion had imo arguably the best quest lines in TES series and that's a huge plus. Yes, the main quest with oblivion gates was terribly annoying and it made me skip it and run through them eventually, but the Mages Guild quests, Thieves Guild and especially Dark Brotherhood were just fantastic. This was also the first TES game where I was fully enjoying myself as a vampire. DLC's were ok, Knights Of The Nine being a nice big quest nicely implemented into the main game and Shivering Isles providing you the experience of something a bit different and a bit trippy. While I can't go for the full score here because of the shortcomings, Oblivion is still an excellent game and it would be a big mistake to miss out on this. 9/10 Expand

I loved this masterpiece and it introduced me to the Elder Scrolls, like it was godlike.
The thing I loved the most was the grand arena as it was fun and a little challenging.
And The thing that made me laugh and a little annoyed was "the annoying fan" who followed you everywhere you went.
But I also loved being a vampire, and the mods.

TL; DR: Main story sucks hard, everything else makes up for it.

    Cons:
The main story BLOWS. I mean it is awful, awful. I literally play enough to get the free horse and do everything else. And once you start, the oblivion gates just keep piling up and piling up, which would be fine if there was any variety to them, but there isn't. They do have good loot though...

Loot: meh. I love loot. love it, love it, love it. It isn't in this game.

Fighting: pretty much point and click, click, click, click. Not much brain used here.

    Pros:
    Music: amazing!

Fighting: wah? you just said it was bad. Yes, unless using a bow. The bow actually takes into account gravity and distance!!!

Quests: super fun, except for the main one. Daedric quests are the best, oh those funny meddling gods!

Atmosphere/graphics: for the time pretty good. The immersion level is fantastic.

NPCs: most amazing part of this game. Every single NPC you see has their own unique routine. Every freakin' one. Yes, they have similar voices, but come on, for the time this was unheard of. It is this factor that truly makes this game a total immersion.

Guilds: Love 'em. There is a guild for everyone: fighting, magic, murder, mayhem. The world is your oyster!

Monsters: i've read a few reviews and this is a sore spot. People are angry monsters level with you. How is this even an isssue???? Why play a game if it is super easy and you can just run around and one shot things? Go play Wii cooking games if this is a problem for you. Seriously. There is a Barbie game for that console too I think. Go, have fun.

Play this game, especially if you liked either Skyrim or Morrowind. The three build on each other so well.

Oblivion is the first experience that I finish in terms of the Elder Scrolls series, which is why I have several things to emphasize, and that is a game with a fairly good magnitude, both in options when it comes to personalizing our character, as well as a good portion of explorable territory with hundreds of side missions. You might think it's a complete game in all its facets, but it's not like that. In terms of history, although the game invites you to enter your world, it does not end correctly, as this is quite cliche with too many pretentious monologues, literally a festival of nerd terminologies that eventually There is a difference between choosing one or another race, even at the sound level it ends up looking like a copy-paste of any medieval film. Technically the game is up to what was expected at the time and although it has aged quite badly, it is still quite satisfactory at its maximum power, as well as the control that is very good.

The strength of this game is without a doubt the re-playability offered by its secondary missions, since despite being repetitive does not mean that it is not good, on the contrary, they are sufficiently addictive to keep you stuck for quite some time. 8.3/10

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The skills are now not just for giving a % chance, they give tangible benefits and can even open the whole new strategies of gameplay. Magic specialties are now actually playable, and magic is even deeper and funnier to use. The dialog experience is better, as NPCs have their own personalities now. The quests became more dynamic, complex, and interactive. NPCs are no longer static, they have their behaviors and can interact with each other. Oblivion allows better modifications, with custom scripting and animations.
Annoying Morrowind aspects like mod conflicts and incompatible localized versions are gone. Each mod exists in its own namespace now.
The negative aspects of the game are badly made mob scaling making them undesirably difficult and limited face customization available by default. The voice acting budget looks significantly cut, and you can hear same actors spanning several races.

Graphics dont age well, The AI are a tad.. dumb, the voice acting can sometimes be off, but the RPG elements, story, and lure make up for those take-aways completely. This is a game that brings you in and lets you experience its fantastically crafted world without resistance or restraint. Its interesting, its inviting, and its definitely fun. I really dont know what more i could ask.

The magnum opus of the Elder Scroll series in my opinion. The main story is enthralling and brilliantly voice acted while stilling having a wealth of different options for a more free form role playing experience.
I would also suggest picking up the expansions, especially Shivering Isles as I think it is probably one of the best additional content I have ever played in a game. Overall 10/10 and would recommend to anyone, even those that aren't into video games in general

A phenomenal and revolutionary fantasy rpg game that may not be considered good to those who have yet to play it, but at release it was amazing. If you have not yet played Skyrim, give this a try first or else you may not be able to get past the bad graphics and clunky combat.

This game was truly epic when it came out.
The new engine was great and ran well. (still a lot of bugs, but better then what came after)

Optimizing your gameplay for the leveling system was kind of hell though.

Perfect rpg. Everything i ever wanted from rpg. Original quests, Captivating storyline, and this wierd feeling that you get when you boot it up. That just makes you want to play it forever. Better than Skyrim.

Oh the graphics, they were so great. Main story was at times a bit repetitive, but some of the sideline quests (esp. thieves guild and the dark brotherhood) were amazing. Bugs were not really annoying, just funny. A great game, perhaps the best elder scrolls in my opinion. Playing it today in 2019, it feels very, very dated, but that wont affect my review.

This is the best Game from Bethesda. It's a Masterpiece. The quests are perfect, the story is unbelivable good and the world is very nice. The only bad thing are the Oblivion gates. They are every time nearly the same and are not fit well in, in the game design and the world.

Has all the good stuff about elder scrolls games.
    Suffers from
    - Bugs
    - Bad Voice acting
    - Bad story (closing gates is repetitive)
    - Bad combat

Overall one of the great games.
    Everything else is good

My favourite game ever. The graphics and clunky AI is what gives this game characterics and makes it memorable and I honestly feel bad for the people that can't see the beautiful universe, quests and lore behind it. No game's world has ever fascinated me as much as this one.

Recently re-played this game, and although it is as janky and weird as it always has been, this is still one of my all-time favourite first-person role-playing games, and probably the only game I have replayed as much as this. Coupled with The Shivering Isles expansion this game is just unbeatable. Would I recommend this game to someone who has never played Oblivion before? Probably not.

This game is bethesda's eternal shining jewel, best Elder Scrolls experience imo (at least until TES VI, if that's better than of course this statement doesn't stand, but idk... seems like there's a number of ways TES VI can flop given the expectation and hype).

This is the game for the hardcore crowd, the D&Ders, the PFers. TES V Skyrim while nice, is a watered down RPG made to appeal to the masses. Let's hope for VI that they'll give us another diamond of an RPG.

    The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
    Gameplay Enjoyability (0 - worst, 10 - best)

    Story - 10
    Lore - 10
Character Creation - 10 (customizing appearance and physical attributes isn't so great, especially compared to TES V, but it has class customization, letting you define your own unique class)

    Combat - 7
    Side quests/activities - 10
    Music/soundtrack - 10

Another side note I found the voice acting to be decent and often hilarious (in a good way). Sure it's limited in the amount of different/unique voice actors they used, but to this day I'll never forget certain character's lines and the quality/timbre of their voices. (STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM!)

So here I am to analyze the game. So I'll do a simple analyze and thinking at the time it was released.

In my opinion, according to the time It was released, it must have being one of the best game! In 2006 there was not game like that. The history is simple, the map is big and there is a great quantity of character that can be customized. Also, There's a variety of side quest. I confess that I focused in main quest and I finished it with 20 hours.

Despite of the game have being release 16 years ago, there are two defects that prejudice the gameplay :

I consider the map horrible: it is not possible to see the whole map, you must have to move the regions with the mouse and you can not maximize the map.

Sometimes the game closes down suddenly. How it is an old game, you can just launch the game quickly, but it is boring. It did not happen many times.

I can not say that game physics is a defect, but over the time I played games with wonderful graphics and physics. So, I advise who wants to play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with opened mind.

Comparing Oblivion and Skyrim, In my opinion, Skyrim is absurdly better in all aspects: graphics, history, gameplay, physics, character customization, immersion and so on, but considering the time Oblivion was released I guess it was more innovative game.

  1. It’s just so damned big. That’s what you’ll say after playing Oblivion for more than an hour. Or, for that matter, 50 hours.
  2. Oblivion is by far the closest I have come to playing D&D Sunday afternoons with my friends (yes, I did that, though I’m on medication now), all wrapped up in a stunning package with tens of thousands of lines of spoken dialog and good music.
