However, after giving it a shot, I can safely say it is a real gem. Gilbert's storytelling oozes from every aspect of the gameplay and, personally, I think this was the peak of his creative output. Had he had a bigger budget at his disposal, I'm certain that The Cave would be an authentic platform-adventure masterpiece. Still an awesome experience, though. I came to appreciate The Cave more after going through rather mediocre Thimbleweed Park where Ron indulged in his dorky programming nostalgia to give us one of the most ridiculous and disappointing endings in the history of point-and-click genre. I recall him not receiving the critique all that well... In fact, he got all offended, kind of like a spoiled brat, i guess because his salad days of a programmer aren't quite a material for an adventure game and thus didn't sit well with the common people. Oh, well... Too bad for you, Ronny. Hope you've learned something from that. However, as I am writing this, Return to the Monkey Island is announced. Ron is at the helm and he is once again showing the traits of an angry child faced with (justified) criticism of the appalling artstyle direction he took. That, and the ever growing suspicion that the game will be woke (Disney owns the IP, after all). Anyway, back to the Cave... Like I said, the plot is outright great, graphics are nice and the puzzles are just hard enough. The humor as well as the morbid parts have Ron's signature all over them and it's Ron at his best. You can tell that this game was developed just before woke culture began destroying the entertainment industry. There's little to no chance that the dark comedy project like The Cave would see its release in these times. But, it's my cup of tea and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. Wholehearted recommendation.
