It’s easy to see why The 7th Guest was so beloved in the first place. Vertigo Games has given this classic a well-deserved facelift, ratcheting up the impact of its theatrical story and unique historical atmosphere. Frustrating mechanical woes aside, it still feels like essential reading for puzzle-lovers who wish to experience one of the classics that shaped the adventure game genre.

How you'll experience your return to Stauf's mansion will depend on your last visit. If that visit was 33 years ago, you'll be happy to see what Vertigo Games has done with the place. If you were there in 2023 - wearing a VR headset as you were puzzling your way out - you'll be dealing with the exact same place, minus some previous annoyances. Either way, Stauf is thrilled to taunt you again, no matter how long it has been since you last payed him a visit.

A respectful and intelligently designed modernisation that surpasses the original in almost every measure, The 7th Guest Remake has better puzzles, better storytelling and better audio-visuals, especially when it comes to the vastly improved live-action scenes. The fact that it began its life as a VR game is evident in the annoying way some puzzles control, but in reality, the only big flaw here is that this otherwise fine puzzler lacks the strange, uncanny charm of the older title. A superior piece of software overall, but a less distinctive experience.
