Overall, the game is quite solid.

Bluehole (the original developer) definitely innovated a good deal on the MMO genre, and mixed it with some of the old. Instances become very complex, starting at around level 45 they take a good deal of skill to complete. Bosses often have 5-6 special mechanics that require handling, and punish failure severely.

I can't comment much on PvP, although I've heard good things.

Well, they've done it here. True action combat (think: street fighter) combined with a revolutionary political system where your guild can take over and rule a province (complete with guild house and taxes), they have been able to make an engaging game that is a blast to play. Not to mention the stellar graphics in the game.

All in all, Tera is a polished MMO that is a start of a new franchise that you won't want to miss!

Tera has suprised me with highly impressive visuals and extremely fun combat. The game has raised the bar for the MMO genre. The Big Ass Monster battles are chaotic and a ton of fun. The world is absolutely huge and highly detailed. There are so many peices to talk about but the bottom line is that I will be playing this game for a very long time.

I've read good things about this game, so i thought i had to give it a try. With no trial, and i couldn't find any buddy codes i decided to just jump in and buy the game, and pray that i don't get burned like in the past (DCUO, one of the most recent notable examples).

As i live in UK, i was torn between which version to buy, En Masse (North American), or Frogster (Europe). I decided to go with En Masse due to hearing good things about the community and polite staff and also because it would be a more English speaking community. however i believe having 2 different publishers with slightly different versions of the game could REALLY hurt the sales of the game, due to confusing new players

It took me a full day to actually download the game, due to the rediculous game size (18Gb), and then i had a few logging in problems.

Then i logged in, and after being utterly confused as to why i was starting at lvl 20, and searching forums/websites to see if it was a bug, or something, i persevered and found it was just a prologue. Good idea, badly executed.

Then i got onto Noob Island. and this is where i really started to fall in love with the game. It looks amazing. it plays amazing. sure, the quests are really repetitive, but a few times i have actually found myself killing too many of "x" mob just because i got carried away with the slaughter - the combat is just THAT fun!

I'm still on Noob Island, so i can't really comment on anything after the island, but i hear the game just gets better from then onwards. And the political system sounds like an interesting end-game, i'm not one for raiding so it's refreshing to see a new take on an MMO-end game that could just keep me interested!

Very cute, fun, and just plain enjoyable MMO. What I love most about it is the massive open world. Too many MMO games these days have small areas covered with loading screen after loading screen but Tera has two massive continents to explore just like WoW had. I especially like the color customization but wish the make up didn't come in bundles and you can customize lipstick, etc. seperately :>

This game is really really fun and enjoyable. You have a very active combat system requiring a ton of timing and expertise to combo the correct moves in the right order. Melee classes have a lot of challenges avoiding enemies' AOE damage etc.
Grouping is really well done, but the lack of tanks is noticeable. Pick up this game if you enjoyed WoW, but wanted combat closer to Dragon Age 2 or Skyrim.

The artwork is amazing, character and creature models are great. Each new creature I run into, I amazed at the little details that make it interesting. The world is beautiful.

A new political system that I haven't seen done in games before, though it hasn't come into play yet, it will be interesting to see how it works.

What I had seen and read made it look too good to be true and I was prepared to be disappointed with it - the track record of recent MMOs like Aion, Rift, FFXIV and SW:TOR made me sure that this game would let me down as well. Well it absolutely hasn't much to my surprise.

    Combat:
Combat is action based. Depending on your class you may have a few target lock spells, but 90% are aimed. Characters are stuck in their animations while performing an action in order to assist with balance (how OP would a mage that could cast and run be?). The animations are incredibly fluid as well, that was one of the things I noticed the first time I played. The combat sounds are distinct and solid, you /know/ when you have hit something. Something other MMOs lack. This is the first MMO where combat positioning is incredibly important for all classes - even healers. Admittedly the first 20 levels are a bit slow, once you hit around level 23 you really start to understand why this game is so much fun to play.

    Questing:
There are 4 types of quests; Storyline, Normal, Repeatable and Guild. While the Storyline quests are interesting and give some great rewards and XP, the rest are pretty boring and should be done while doing the Storyline quests imo.

I can't comment on the end game, but so far there are 2 things to do - Politics and Hard Mode dungeons (5 man) the hardmode dungeon mechanics look like raid mechanics from videos I have watched and politics look very intriguing. It will be interesting to see how that all works out in the end.

There are a few bugs at the moment, but nothing too unexpected from a brand new MMO, certainly not enough bugs to detract more than a point or two.

It's fairly obvious that the negative reviews here are coming from people that either haven't played the game, do not understand how latency affects gameplay or have played to a very low level (sub 14).

The combat is not stcky tab target, mash some buttons and get bored in 5 minutes, nor is it a "Korean grinder". En Masse, the publisher has taken steps to add quests and balance gameplay to a more comfortable NA style of game-play. Yes the interface and combat style is totally different from previous mmos. Combat, tanking and even healing are engaging. The "in the works" portions of the game I think is where the negative press comes in. The pvp battle grounds are not in game yet and open world pvp is based on guild vs guild and politics. PVP servers exist and are rather chaotic at the moment, sadly not my stronger game-play exp.

I personally love the fresh and new innovations Blue Hole has designed and added to Tera. The whole things runs really well with decent settings on a lower PC but above minimal requirements. My personal view, after playing mmos since UO in 1997, is that this is a diamond in the rough, that is being over looked due to much bigger names and franchises releasing near same time. New ppl logging in are amazed at the community and the over all experience within minutes. I hope this helps!

Let's face it, 90% of an MMO is killing things and Tera nails that. Overall pretty solid. The main draw is the combat. Fast paced and action based which is what sets it apart from other MMO's. It's less about optimizing your character on a spreadsheet and more about playing an actual game. Compared to a game like WoW every role from dps to tanking to healing is far more active. IE DPS are constantly chasing targets, dodging attacks, all while pumping out the damage. You don't stand in one spot for 8 minutes while performing a rotation.

There are some weaknesses in things like crafting, class balance and role distribution, and the questing follows the basic MMO model of "Kill 10 of x". Those are mostly tertiary problems which while annoying are over shadowed by the engaging combat.

There are a couple of MMOs I have been looking forward to - GW2 and Tera. After this weekend and after playing both, I can easily say Tera comes out on top. Tera has the best combat system in any MMO. Questing and leveling is on par with games like WoW but dungeons, world bosses and combat are out of this world.

I'm trying to give a fair review here. This game is not 10/10 game of the year material, but if you like the art style and are looking for something different than the standard tab targeting skill bar mashing WoW clone, then I think this is really worth a try.

The negatives for me are probably that I'd like a little more innovation in quests, but I don't see that they are any worse than 90% of MMOs I've played. There's enough instance quests, and then BAM fights starting at about level 19 to break up the repetition of "go kill x", "go gather x", "go talk to x".

The positives are the graphics, and environments that keep my jaw dropping with each new area, The bosses and BAM fights actually do require some thinking and strategy rather than just skill bar mashing. Tanking is more than just about keeping aggro since your blocks actually prevent damage to people behind you. The collisions based combat, while not as dynamic as something pure instance based like Vindictus, or some single player games, is a huge accomplishment and most people just don't understand the amount of complexity this adds to the server/net code. They've done a great job, and some minor annoyances like enemy pop up is acceptable to me given that it's only noticeable for me when traveling fast by mount. More important than any of that, and why I'm giving it a good review despite some issues is that I've been playing since CB1, and I'm still having *fun*. In a genre that was nearly dead to me, and generally hasn't kept my interest, this says more to me than any feature or bug.

However whether both these plus points can stand the test of time is another matter, and if they can't then the future doesn't look that rosey for TERA in my opinion; as aside from these two albeit significant pluses TERA has very little else to offer over and above any other MMO already on the market. While there's nothing particularly bad about the game it's just more of the same generic fantasy 'kill 10 monkeywangers" go back and '"kill 10 infected monkeywangers" etc etc... don't be expecting any deep lore or story telling here, there's a lot less than Rift for example. So far upto level 20, the levelling process has been linear in the extreme, with all classes/races being funnelled through the same zones and quests (with no diversity). The other issue I have with the game is pricing, because as the sub price has been fixed using EURO's which means for a UK player the monthly sub will be variable, and presently is more expensive than it's peers in the MMO market. Now this isn't a moan or whine about not being able to afford it, or as a UK player that we should get special treatment, but an objective view on TERA's price in comparison to other games available on the UK market. It's simply more expensive than any of the big MMO's out there from a UK players perspective, and I have to ask (as will I'm sure many others) is it worth the extra cost over the competition.. my opinion is; not really! I feel that the pricing difference will be a mental barrier (it's over the 'golden' £10) as opposed to a real fiscal barrier, but I think many potential subscribers will simply choose to go elsewhere.. Rift, SWTOR, WoW, LoTRO, and even the about to be released GW2. Expand

The unreal 3 engine pulls this all off perfectly , smooth fluid movement and reaction times. Beats WOW in my book and put SWTOR to shame!

All they keep doing is more cash grab events and nothing else other than trashing the best action combat out there. The combat is fantastic as with the gameplay, endgame dungeons are not to be taken lightly as mechanics in BT such as your screen slowly going black if you don't burn or kill the targets correctly, these are good mechanics that add challenge on the already existing game style an should be commended for it. The flaws in the game come from the MMO style of 'get game, get gear, patch, more gear' which is, personally, a deeply annoying trend. The story quests are great, as with the many cut scenes. You don't get better questing until later levels (50-60) which is a shame as the most common complaint, the quests 1-10 should really be designed to 'hook' your audience, but the combat somewhat makes up for that.

A very solid 9/10, I would give 8/10 but 9/10 is the new 8/10 because rating systems are **** Only a few games have ever been 10's in history and nothing of that quality has been produced this year.

I know its hard to lump all 3 of those words into the same category but with Tera, you can. I'll tell you what's innovative about it and I am sure this comes as no surprise, the combat . I am sure you have heard all about the combat in Tera and it is definitely lived up to its reputation. It's fun, engaging, fast and furious! It's nice to play an MMO where the combat is measured with skill, and not just... who has the better skill bar. The combat is one of Tera's biggest draws for sure. The other big draw... is its graphics. Everything from the world, character models, animations, and effects have been truly realized in this fantasy setting. From the moment you step onto the island of dawn, you will be blown away by the colourful world that lay before you. The artists did an excellent job putting detail in just about everything you look at.

But how does the game play out? Well...it plays out like a great 3rd person action game would. So far, I haven't really found any flaws in how the game feels. It seems the developers put a lot of time into ironing out any game play bugs and flaws. It's a very fluent, quick, responsive game and plays surprisingly well with an xbox 360 or PS3 controller. It almost feels like this game would have been the perfect match for a console MMO (and it almost feels like they had that in mind during development).

Also its worth noting that the character creation and class selection is a very exciting process. The amount of choices for character creation and class selection is exceptional. They include just about every major class from the fantasy realm and include a few fresh ideas. Every class has its defined role... i.e. the Warrior is a fast, agile class that deals damage at a higher rate of attack, thus making it a front line DPS fighter...but, your not "limited" per say to that role. If you do want to venture out and play a different role with your character, you can, its just might be more challenging then sticking to the pre-defined role. It comes down to how you control your character during combat that defines your role. Once again, its actual player skills that counts.

So I got the positives out of the way, now for some of the negatives...and when I say negatives, I mean major flaws. I am just going to come out and say it...the questing is absolutely TERRIBLE!!! (or Terable..hehe..I just had to do it). It's like the game directors gave the story and quest department some time off. The quests are the most unimaginative, boring, and mundane quests I've ever encountered in any MMO. They are the generic "kill X amount of this monster and come back to me", or "talk to so and so, then come back to me"...but done in the most boring fashion ever! There's not even voice over dialogue to keep you entertained (not even with the main story quest givers!!). IMO, the whole fetch quest system (in any game now a days) is in a desperate need of a face lift...or elimated from MMO's all together.

Next would be the tedious grind through levels...It can get really old really fast. Do boring fetch quest, gain XP. Kill several mobs, gain XP. Repeat that over and over again. Now some people may say that you can never get away from that in MMO's. I say, not true. Lets take SWTOR for example. I know the game was a big let down but the questing, story, and voice over dialogue definitely kept me engaged for some time. Even GW2 adopted voice over dialogue with cut scenes for the main story quests. SOMETHING MORE!! is my point. To put absolutely no effort into keeping your players engaged in the story and questing is probably why they lost so many subscribers in a couple of months following release. It's like they thought the combat would suffice and they left it at that.

Final Thought: It's a great game for new players to the MMO genre. It's fast and furious combat will keep gamers engaged for a bit. Unfortunately, this game took the most basic cookie cutter MMO mechanics and slapped a new coat of paint on it. It's a tedious and boring grind through levels. The game does has a saving grace (well 2 actually), Graphics and Combat. That's it. The other draw I guess is the fact its going F2P in less then a month. You can play now up to level 28 to get a head start. That should be enough time to decide for yourself. Is the innovative combat enough to keep you engaged? or does it feel...lifeless?

Playing on the EU servers with a Warrior (aka rogue!) and I am enjoying the combat. In the starter island there is a good amount of running around but once you hit the mainline you get a horse and things improve.

Because many players buy novelty junk for real money to sell it in game, it inflates prices of gear to ridiculous levels that you can only really make from real money novelty stuff. You would think that isn't a big deal since you can just farm the items you need yourself... but you would be wrong. Trying to find a group for anything in end game is extremely difficult if you actually still need items from that instance. The players just will not invite you to an instance that drops t14 unless you are full t14. So the progression system is basically buy items from broker, run content you don't need items from simply to sell on broker, use that money to buy better stuff, etc. Really stupid. After playing all the CBTs and having an early start in OBT and playing to the current cap of level 32 (and now to 43 after going live) I've got to say that this is quite easily the best MMORPG I've played.

Now, that is based on my previous experience in MMORPGs and my initial favour towards eastern art direction and architecture so your mileage might vary on that opinion. And that is what initially drew me to this game to begin with, but what has kept me is the combat and gameplay as well as the community.

The problem I have with this game, is levels 1 - 20 are a bit of a chore. While the combat is ace, your early skills aren't indicative of how varied the combat can be in later levels, so it feels very much like your usual stale MMORPG with collection quests. En Masse valiantly have tried to counter this with adding extra moves to bosses and monsters, trying to make it more of a challenge, as well as the prologue intro, but it's essentially going to remain quite stale.

This is where I think a lot of players falter, and certainly where I faltered in a number of my concerns to begin with. I did wonder if the quests would change, if there'd be actual variation, if the combat was going to stay as clicking the mouse button and dodging blindly because of how easy it was.

I will mention the need for a solid community base to fully enjoy this game. It promotes parties, it promotes politics and it promotes guilds. If you endeavour to solo it, your enjoyment is going to be less than what it could be if you had a group of friends. They have tried to counter this with cross-server LFG tools, and it actually fairs extremely well. But this is just for instanced dungeons, not the open world (for obvious reasons). While there is a single-server LFG tool for open world, not many people utilise it because they are already with their guild parties.

Back to the combat. It's great. If you make it past the earlier levels (and let's be honest, it doesn't take long in this game) then you're in for a treat. The quests are by and large, the same. However, this isn't a problem. Why? Because the combat is so **** sweet. You have a quest to kill 20 monsters, that sounds tedious, right? Wrong! They are usually quite condensed so you can run around and agro as many as you like and give yourself a real challenge.

As a slayer, I'm close quarters, high evasion, damage through combinations. I will pick around four monsters, gather them up and play it almost literally like I was playing God of War (with limitations of it being an MMORPG, of course). And it is intensely satisfying. The combat is fluid, it *feels* strong, the sound effects make it sound like my attacks are connecting and that they are really doing damage. My varied options of evading, stunning, knocking down, slashing everything in my range - it's so satisfying. The one single downside to this is that I can never go back to a traditional combat styled MMORPG. It's that satisfyingly good.

The community, originally it was god-awful. People in open chat made it comparable to Barrens chat, it was bad. However, people seem to have settled in or the players testing the waters have dropped off and people who really care about the game have stayed. The open world chat is still full of drama, but that's a good thing. It's open world PvP with a high emphasis on Guild vs Guild PvP in the open world - so of course you're going to have people beating their chests for everyone to see.

People seem to love to play their roles well because of how satisfying it is to play them well. I have never once been in a bad instanced party, it's either good, or great, or awesome, never bad.

Enchanting weapons is interesting, you take an item from the merchant, your weapon and another weapon of that tier and try to enchant it. The rarity of the sacrificial weapon increases the chance, but are also valuable weapons themselves so that is the result of risk of loss which makes it a bit interesting, but not soul destroying if you fail an enchant.

Gathering is awesome, you can mine, dig plants, take essence and the incentive to stop killing monsters and gather things is that you actually get beneficial buffs to your character which aids in killing more monsters. I haven't tried making any armour or weapons or anything like that, that stuff doesn't interest me. But I do like gathering.

Also, if there is a queue on the server, after 10 minutes of waiting you get an XP bonus for every minute longer you wait. A nice addition for having to wait in queue.

Of course there are still things I don't like about the game, and maybe this is still the honeymoon period, but I can't see myself lessening my enjoyment if this is how much fun I'm having only at level 32 with just two instances to play. Bring on retail!

If you can get past the eastern graphics and the hilariously awful race that is the Elin, you may well enjoy this game also.

The quests and crafting are pretty average, but there isn't anything wrong with them either. There are a few little hang ups with Guild vs Guild and player killers "safe zone hugging," but the core combat of player vs player is extremely entertaining and involving.

I would definitely say that the game is worth a try for anyone that gets the chance, for both MMO veterans and people new to the genre as well.

Don't listen to the 10/10 glowing reviews, because they are all fake, and they conveniently leave out fatal drawbacks of Tera.

Here is a REAL Review, from an actual player:

    Pros:

    Graphics and FPS-style combat.

    Cons:

MAJOR game-breaking bugs (reported over 50 of them so far, and this game has been out for 3 years?)!

    HUGE design flaws such as:

Can't even enter or exit through doors of your own team's castle in PvP battlegrounds

Teleporter menus in cities are TEXT-ONLY rather than a VISUAL MAP

Quests are completely redundant and have little or no creative process involved (e.g. same quest, different monster)

    Quest List is very cluttered

Quest objectives do NOT automatically show up on the map (e.g. you have to open each one manually, and find the objective, activate the link, and THEN it shows up... redundant? Lazy programmers? Yes!)

Opening up the map does not show the current zone you're in, rather it is completely ZOOMED OUT (again, lazy programming)

Mini-map radar in the upper right has no terrain on it, and it is completely dark, has some dots every now and then... is this a joke? (no, it's lazy programming)

Lots of repetitive spell animations (i.e. they use mostly generic circles for every single caster AoE spell)

No AFK command (can you believe this? I was laughing when I first found out)

While riding a horse you CANNOT dismount by casting a spell or ability; the ONLY way you can dismount is by using the "summon horse" ability again (e.g. imagine how annoying this gets after a while, you just want to jump right into something with a spell, bam, but you can't, because you have to de-summon the horse first instead of allowing you to de-summon it by simply casting any other spell like every other MMO does... lazy programming yet again)

When you disconnect from the game while in a dungeon, and you are kicked while offline, you still receive a 15 minute debuff that does not allow you to use dungeon or battleground matching system again; even if you were already in there for 15 minutes

You lose all your spells and abilities from your hotkey bar after you finish a Battleground match if you're still inside of a siege tank or tower gun (this bug has been around for over a year apparently, still NOT fixed)

There are NO MAILBOXES in this game, you must go through an NPC, which holds both Bank and Mailbox options, and the Mailbox option is labeled as "PARCEL POST" (Seriously? You couldn't even just make a simple mailbox?)

When you die in this game, your base health upon resurrection is dramatically reduced due to low "stamina," and the only way to get it back is either drink an expensive potion, or stand by a campfire for 5 minutes (do you really, honestly, truly, want to stand by a campfire for 5 minutes in the middle of your dungeon run?)

Another note on dying: If you "release" or "resurrect" while inside of a dungeon, it will revive you at the nearest town, all the way outside of the dungeon, and typically it would take you 5-10 minutes just to get back to the dungeon (unless of course you have a lot of money and pay for teleport scrolls, which most people do not have... do you really want to waste 5 minutes by a campfire AND 5-10 minutes running back to the dungeon?)

Dungeon bosses have absolutely no diverse range of mechanics; it's all tank and spank, and the tank can't even hold aggro half the time (I guess that makes it a little more exciting at least? Until you die of course, then you have the 5 minute campfire or 5-10 minutes of running back)

More on Dungeons: There are VERY FEW of them, and you have to wait until level 20 (only 60 levels max in this game just so you know) before you can try your FIRST dungeon. Also, there are GAP periods between some dungeons, where you will be unable to queue up to the instance dungeon matching system (i.e. at level 32-35), so that is yet again another period you will be forced to either manually find a group, or go back to redundant questing

Very Low Population: This is probably the biggest drawback, despite all of the design flaws and horrendous bugs, because without other players, you can't even form groups to do anything, so you will often be stuck waiting even during the middle of the day to find a group for a dungeon, or go back to redundant questing

Massive Server Lag due to lack of consistent maintenance (delay of up to about 10 seconds for chat messages at times) I will update this list in the near future, but this is what I have so far at nearly maximum level. Overall: This game's development team is shamefully lazy, and you should invest your valuable time elsewhere.

Setting aside the 3 rules of New MMO's, you have to decide for yourself what will make you stay or leave. For me, TERA hits on almost every single note I could want from an MMO. True-Action combat that gives the feel of Mortal Kombat / Killer Instinct meets World of Warcraft; Graphics like nobodies business; Character creation is very diverse and unique, with a huge variety to choose from. I can keep going on and on about all the aspects of this game that I love. I think the best way to describe it would be Vanilla WoW or Vanilla EQ, or FFXI, these games all had very unique methods of game play, as soon as I started playing TERA I knew I was going to enjoy it. LvL 60 now and it's just amazing, I can't see myself getting bored of this game any time soon. Compare this game to SWTOR release, that game had a lot of story and game play, and most would argue that the 1-50 was pretty great! After that things went downhill because the game play just wasn't good enough to Sustain. TERA on the other hand, their Game play is SOOO good, they just lack in the quest, but the combat more than makes up for that. Look at WoW -- great game play and pvp, but poor questing system overall. This game is already great! It's going to get even better very soon, and to top it off, they didn't make 1892750189275098 servers, so that means each server has a GREAT population and GREAT community, makes questing and running instances and grouping for BAM's so easy. I do need to say that the opinions expressed here are solely my own and in no way represent or give favoritsm to the company that makes this game. That being said, I hope you all enjoy my review of TERA and I look forward to playing with all of you at the Head Start.

I would like to start off by saying that the visuals in this game are quite impressive. More often than not I found myself in awe of some of the beautifully animated locales strewn throughout the game. That's not to say it was perfect though. The Open Beta was marred with tearing, blinding white spots and minor annoyances that will hopefully be patched out by the time the game launches or soon thereafter. Also, while the dungeons bosses were impressive, the lack of detail and overuse of duplicate scenery in them were not. It's not really a big problem as I enjoyed them nonetheless, but something that I thought I would note.

For a Korean game that surpasses Aion in visuals, I was expecting a more varied Character Creation. Don't get me wrong, the character models are absolutely stunning and worthy of praise. I was just expecting more options in the way of customizing your character, much akin to Aion. I mean, come on, who doesn't want to change their female Sorcerer's bust size? But all jokes aside, it wasn't too bad and in my honest opinion is done much better than the Character Creation of a game like World of Warcraft. However, people really need to get off the whole 'Elin are a pedophiles dream' train. The creature design in this game is amazing. Some of the monsters were really well done and awe-inspiring. Props to them in this department.

In just about every game I've played I always favor melee type characters, especially those who use a Great Axe. So yes, I did play Berserker. Though I also tried Sorcerer, Archer and Slayer. The majority of my experience was on the Berserker. The combat for me was fluid, fun and took more skill than a game like Aion or World of Warcraft. The first 20 levels were easy and I never died, however it was a great way to learn the game and get used to the combat for the content to come. As soon as I was able to do BAM's I was in love. The fights were exciting and required precise timing as well as the use of all my skills to not only stay alive, but do damage to the beasts. This was honestly where the game shined and I couldn't have been having any more fun. Dungeon bosses were even more intense and decidedly more impressive than your run of the mill BAM. The combat might have been over-hyped but I think it is one of the best features in this game. And the cool thing is that there is still more room for improvement, it can only get better people!

One of the weakest points to this game would be the story. I read all the quest text, paid attention to the cutscenes and gathered as much information as I could. But for some reason it just didn't strike the 'completely awesome' chord for me. That's not to say that the story isn't great, I just think it could be better and who knows, it might after 32.

Really, the only thing I didn't participate in was PvP. Sorry guys, but I truly hate PvP and you almost never see me do it. So if you want an opinion on that, you'll have to go elsewhere. I might end up trying it out sometime, but it's not a priority of mine.

Aside from some minor tweaks and improvements that will hopefully be fixed by the time it launches, this game is well on it's way to becoming a force to be reckoned with. If you want fast paced, skill based combat with stunning visuals and a detailed world look no further than this game. Like I said before, it can only get better and it's my hope that it will.

For a pre-launch review based on the first 32 levels of content I give this game an 9 out of 10. It's definitely one of the smoother betas I've participated in and has lots of room to improve. I hope you enjoyed reading my review and I will definitely see you all at Head Start!

If you enjoy action combat RPG's, then definitely give TERA a chance. The website gives a ton of helpful game info for anyone whom is not familiar with the game yet.

The graphics look nice, if a bit over the top. Some of the female 'armours' do look pretty whorish, but you can avoid those races if you think it's too much (Human females for example aren't nearly as bad as Elves). It runs fine on my 5-year old system (granted it's a good 5-year old system) with everything turned up pretty high, with major lag only coming from the capital city. Music is alright, though the voicework is forgettable. My only other major fantasy MMORPGs being WoW and WAR, I'll just compare the gameplay to those; combat is excellent and a lot more fun than WoW was. I played a squishy healer, and had no trouble soloing since I can actually avoid getting hit. What a novel concept. In groups I'm constantly running around repositioning myself to avoid boss attacks, while having to aim my spells instead of standing in one spot pushing heal whenever the tank gets low. I tried out a berserker as well (melee DPS) and was impressed that I had to think about combos, blocking, and dodging attacks instead of running a macro and taking a nap. Definitely the highlight of the game. Some people try to point out that most skills require you to stop moving for a moment, but if such wasn't the case ranged DPS would utterly dominate melee in PvP; besides are definitely a number of skills that you can fire off on the move. Quests are poorly done. Like WAR, the game at least doesn't waste your time and puts monsters and objectives right on your map for you. However quests were always your generic, 'kill X boars', 'gather Y plants' and repeated over and over. There were occasions were you got interesting 'hold the line for 10 minutes against hordes of enemies' type quests, but far, far too few. Quest XP is generally decent though. I didn't have to start doing extra grind beyond quests until the high 30s, and was even turning down quests before that as there were actually too many. Grind in general has been far less than I experienced in WoW and WAR. I generally only have time to play 2, maybe 3 hours a day and was at level 30 in a week, while that took me about 3 weeks back when I played WoW. One of game's big questing points are the BAMs, which are basically mini-bosses in the main questing areas. They are major fights that are hard to solo. You can skip them entirely, but if you want to see all the content you're going to have to get over it and group up once in a while. There are several instances, usually a new one every 10 levels or so. They start off very easy (did the first with 3 party members, that didn't even have a proper tank), but eventually you'll have to start being smart and taking your time through them if you don't want to wipe. Getting groups for them wasn't too bad, though there's definitely a tank shortage among players. PvP is very limited right now, but battlegrounds have been promised in the next major content patch. I didn't roll PvP server, so I can't fairly review the Guild vs Guild combat in this review. Finally, the races and class options were generally okay. Races are mainly cosmetic, with the racial advantages being fairly moot past the beginner areas. Classes had a variety of melee and ranged DPS, two healers/support classes and one tank. The one tank is the main problem with grouping right now, but there are plans to make the Warrior into a more viable (it's pretty flaky right now) evasion tank to ease the problems with getting a tank for instances and BAMs. There were no bugs or crashes I experienced, and no major lag outside of the capital city. All in all, I'm enjoying Tera so far. Will I play it for years to come? Unlikely, but some people seem to think MMOs need to last as long as WoW did; but if I get my fun out of it for a few months and move on that's fine with me. I'm getting my money's worth for now. I don't believe in objective reviews for the sole fact that you introduce what I like to consider the "godlike" element, in that you expect way too much from the game, and that most people who would like to think they're objective are anything but. I'm not going to fool myself and I'm going to look at everything in respect to other MMO's on the market.

    Gameplay:

Looking at everything from the big picture, this is your standard MMO experience. Your goal is to get to the endgame, and you do this by killing things and questing.

    Questing and Story:

The questing in this game is one of its shortcomings. It's all pretty much the generic, "fetch this" or "kill this" kind of thing. If you're expecting the quests themselves to be new or exciting, for the most part you're going to be disappointed.

If you actually play the game for its lore and take that into consideration, the quests do become somewhat more engrossing because the lore is high quality and coherent. They make you feel like you're actually making an impact to the world, even if you are doing essentially the same thing over and over. The lore helps break the monotony if you pay attention to it.

    Interface:

The interface is quite different from your standard MMO due to the fact that the combat is action-based. Simply put, there are two interface modes. In your standard combat and running around mode, the mouse moves your field of vision and affects where you aim your abilities. In the second mode, you have an onscreen cursor to do things such as open menus and move inventory items around.

There is somewhat of a learning curve to the interface, but it's fairly intuitive once you get used to it. Switching between the two interface modes is quite simple; all you have to do is hit "Alt" or "Esc". In fact, they made the transition even more user-friendly as certain queues or actions will automatically enable one of the two interface modes. For instance, if you move in any direction, the combat-mode will be enabled, while talking to a quest giver will enable the interface-interaction mode.

    Combat:

This is where the game absolutely shines. Other MMO's have your standard tab-targeting system where you stand still and cast abilities with no real consequence for not moving at all. In TERA, the combat is far more action-oriented. While I hesitate to say it's revolutionary, it's a significant improvement over the standard MMO system.

Each class has abilities that either mitigate damage or allow you to avoid it completely when you use them at the right time during combat. If you're really keen, you can even dodge a lot of things by running to the side or backwards at the perfect time. The game rewards you for doing this, by allowing you to pretty much eliminate any downtime if you're skilled enough with your dodging or mitigation.

Another aspect of the action-oriented combat where this game improves upon other MMO's is its combo system. Your abilities have the potential to chain together and create awesome effects, as well as lower their channeling times. The system is very fluid and natural once you get used to it, and is a lot more engaging than simply hitting your skills based on a cooldown-only system.

An unfortunate aspect of the combat is that the animations are locked, meaning once you start casting an ability you can't do anything else until the animation is finished. A non-locked system would be quite easy to exploit though, so it's not all bad in this regard.

    Sound & Music:

The sound and music in this game are very solid and what you would expect from a Fantasy MMO. I haven't come across any music yet that has made me say "holy crap this is EPIC!", but the music is definitely engaging and helps you immerse yourself in the world.

    Visuals:

This game looks amazing. There's not a whole lot else to say about it. The world was designed well, and is visually striking. It is probably the best looking MMO to date.

    Overall:

This has been the most enjoyable MMO experience I have had in a very long time, and TERA comes highly recommended from me. A must play for any MMO buff!

Great races that seem weird at first but come together in a great manner. Great combat system. BEEEAAUUUUTIFUL artwork (each zone after level 25 or so looks absolutely amazing and even some before).

Negatives- crafting system is USELESS till 60 except maybe alchemy. 2 Reasons, one its stupid expensive and stupidly hard to level and the way its build and how fast you level just makes no sense to start till lvl 60, except maybe alchemy crafting. So all the crap that's craftable from lvl 1-410 (crafting levels) is absolutly useless, even though it is a grind fest from hell to get there, really your leveling it ONLY to get to 410 plus. The ENDGAME content is retarded and repetative. You have 7, 5-man dungeons to choose from, 5 of them being repeated harder modes (lazy developers) and the other part is doing these bland and boring "daily" quests (one of them includes walking a really slow sheep for about 50 meters into town with no mobs to fight). Getting equipped can be a tedious and horrible grind (ran Fane of Kaprima dungeon 1000 times to get this enigmatic chest and saw it drop 1 time only and lost roll) and than after words i'm expect to grind just as bad to get the mats to level it up. Lets not forget the absolute bland and boring quest systems with all quests either being, Kill X amount mobs, Find X amount of items, Talk to X person).

Bottom line leveling from 1 - 59 is amazing experience even though the quest system is super bland i still had a blast. Level 60 "endgame" is a repetative and EXTREMELY boring super grind fest. I actually canceled my supscription and wait for an expansion that maybe puts REAL endgame content but i'm not holding my breath. There's a reason why Korea Tera is loosing popularity after only 2 years of it being out. BTW all future content is also handled by Korea so whatever is decided to be done will come out in korea first and than reworked for the U.S. In Korea Tera very little has been done since it started. YES i know that they still got the Nexuses coming which is like a smaller scale version of rift... go in to a random Nexus with random people and just kill a bunch of monsters).

The fighting system is extremely fluid, people moving everywhere all the time while dodging, etc. Melee really shine in this game but casters, especially healers, are still a lot of fun.

The bad is the quests. The writing in them really sucks. If the quest isn't a story (red) quest then chances are that it isn't worth reading. I also don't really care for the crafting system. It isn't very intuitive as far as components, runes, and stuff go. The voice acting and cutscenes are nice after the intro levels - I admit that those are pretty bad.

This game has a TON of potential and is definitely worth a try. Also, anyone who says this is a WoW clone has never played it or they've never played WoW. Quests are crap much like WoW but combat wise it couldn't be more different.

The only issues I have with the game are that it runs slow sometimes on my aging laptop (although it still runs smooth 90% of the time, provided I keep the graphics at three or lower) but that's my fault, and that the quests do get a tad repetitive at first, but that quickly gets sorted out by the time you hit level 10 or so. I am not sure why this game is getting so much hate, perhaps WoW fanboys are just that desperate to build their game, that they will tear down any other game that challenges it. There is close to no grinding and the BAM system is quite awesome. Crafting is expensive but gathering is useful and rewarding. TLDR: If you like pvp, content updates, or balance, avoid Tera.

Tera is in many ways attempting to be creative and innovative, but falls flat in the most basic of expectations.

The levelling process follows the standard set by World of Warcraft. Killing x mobs, gathering y flowers, and wandering from quest hub to quest hub. Every now and then the quest path leads to a 5 man dungeon where the standard tank/healer/damage dealer trinity is required.
As levels increase, the process gets slower, and the final step from 59 to 60 is time consuming and tedious.

Once at 60, the endgame is composed of more 5 man dungeons, a few larger raid instances, and a single battleground where players can group up and face an opposing team in a control based scenario. All in all, it is similar, though perhaps slightly more frugal, to most MMOs in the ARPG genre.

The game does however fail to deliver at even the most basic level in four distinct areas.

    The Economy
Never before have I encountered a game where playing the market was absolutely necessary. Progress through the game is measured in gold. Enchanting your equipment to competitive levels requires jawbreaking levels of gold in your piggybank, and acquiring those weapons in the first place is easiest with gold as well (as few weapons are bind on pickup). Acquiring even a small portion of the materials required yourself will take a long time, and requires the assistance of a team.
This approach is the direct opposite of how most MMOs do it, and it ruins any sense of progression or respect for that progression.

    Balance and content updates
The european version of Tera receives very few updates, and most of these only deal with specials and price cuts in the TERA shop, a place where players can spend real money on ingame items.
No balance changes have been applied, meaning that the state of balance in the game is unaltered. The player classes that perform at a superior level will continue to do so, and the player classes that do not perform sufficiently will continue to underperform. This creates a notably lopsided diversity, as the dedicated players continue to reroll to the functional classes. Notably, this phenomenon can be perceived in high-performance battleground teams, where only specific classes are represented. This is a direct result of the balance, and the certitude that changes will not be coming. This means that unless you picked the right class (or rerolled to one), prepare to be fodder.

    Gear based performance
No matter how good you are, gear is more important. Never before have I encountered a game where gear accounts for such a massive amount of your performance. The difference between the damage of an ilvl145 and ilvl155 geared character can be as large as 20x in a pvp setting. That means that you have to hit your opponent 20(!) times more to achieve the effect your opponent will have with only one. As a result, unless you are at the gear top, prepare to die in one hit, and die often.

    Player vs Player
While I have mentioned the issue of class balance, the topic of PvP deserves its own section.
The basic layout is very simple, with classes receiving rather few talents and abilities, resulting in linear and predictable combat. There are plenty of stuns and knockdowns, and these usually last longer than the average life expectancy. Thus, if you do get stunned or knocked down, expect to die. As a result, surefire stuns can be used in lieu of skill to quickly and efficiently kill opponents, even if you only have the most rudimentary knowledge of gameplay.
There is no way out of stuns or roots, meaning that once affected, you will suffer the duration with no opportunity for counterplay. There is also no version of diminishing returns to reduce the duration of incapacitation, meaning that stacking long duration aoe stun classes (such as warriors) allows for a stunlock that never ends on multiple opponents.
This absolute over abundance of stuns, roots, and knockdowns ruins any form of tactical player combat.

    Conclusion
Tera has some interesting aspects, such as the action element incorporated into the standard RPG formula. The graphics are pleasant, and if one can oversee the childish art style of weaponry and enemies, quite innovative.
So why score the game a 2?
While there are some good aspects to the game, the abyssal failures outlined above intrude upon the gameplay to such an extent as to make it unplayable, destroying whatever parts of the game that can be enjoyed.
PvP is horrible. Playing the market is a superior alternative to actually playing the game. There is no hope for balance. Without toplevel gear, you are a liability at best.

This game is awful overall and the only people who should every play it are people who love endless grind or pulling out their credit cards so they can pay to win.

I'll be nice though and start with the only positive. The gameplay mechanics itself is decently fun in PVE. Rolling around and chaining abilities can be challenging on harder bosses and offers something most MMOs don't.

However, it's largely repetitive after a while and can get old after you get halfway to the level cap. This is about all TERA has to offer.

As for the rest of it, once you hit the level cap expect a huge gear disadvantage followed by endless grind with a horrific community and just about every other standard feature you'd expect out of an MMO falling flat on its face so hard that I honestly can't believe, after all the past examples we've had, they'd do so freaking bad at this things.

First off, let's discuss PvP. It's not balanced. In terms of classes alone, TERA is another game which for some indeterminable reason decided to implement the god awful trinity (heals, DPS, tank) for groups. This automatically means that certain classes are going to faceroll other classes on the spot just by the nature of what their class is designed to do in 1v1. Their chosen method to fix this is to basically make healer classes have an endless supply of health, heals, mana and dodge skills which, instead of making it engaging to try to kill a healer, basically make it impossible to solo most healers and makes it a game of running around chasing them constantly. It's not fun. Not only this, but the two classes they've recently implemented are so undeniably overpowered that it's completely ruined PvP. The gunner has abilities that can completely wipe a group in 3v3 in one shot, and other abilities that require no skill at all but still wipe half of your health away while other melee DPS classes have to get off entire combos in exact order and pray the other player doesn't somehow desync while they're doing it to even come close to that kind of damage.

Did I mention the gear grind for PvP also? Once you hit the level cap, you'll be put on a horrible, boring, and uneventful grind for gear. What's worse is that without the top gear, you'll be at such a huge disadvantage that you'll be effectively cut out from about half of the PvP content available. What's even worse is that players can pay to get this gear at such a hugely faster pace that it's effectively pay to win. Also the battlegrounds you have are awful and all broken for various reasons which I can't list here because it'd take too long. They're just bad, and you have to repeat them over and over to get end game gear, along with grinding PvE. What's even worse is that instead of fixing their current BGs or adding new interesting PvP content, they're just adding higher level armor for more grind to keep players around. Expect constant desyncs and lag spikes while you're playing too; screen freeze and then sudden death. So much fun.

The graphics are OK but poorly optimized. It's about on the level of Aion for pure visuals but chugs like the Witcher 3.

The combo system they tried to implement is something every player avoids because it just doesn't work like it should. Because of this, players turn to hotkey binding like WoW which, in my opinion, is awful and should have died for every MMO that came out after WoW.

PvE is a grind and very samey. Nothing new after hitting level 30 or so. The same quests and then playing the same dungeons repeatedly just like WoW to get end game gear which is an even worse grind than PvP gear. I don't recommend it.

The game is oversexualized. I found it hard to play at first just because of this. There's an overwhelmingly preferred race called Elin which is modeled after maybe an 8 year old anime girl which everyone dresses up in lingerie and stuff. It's obvious that there is some pedophilia infiltrating the ranks of TERA players.

The broker is useless. Players put up stacks of consumable items which other players must buy the whole amount for sale or none at all. On top of this, the broker has a system where you have to negotiate with the player selling while they are online in order to receive a reasonable price. Otherwise, the game tacks on an extra set percentage which goes to neither player and just disappears as a tax. The negotiate option is obnoxious as it spams in chat trying to force you to answer it. People will constantly lowball your price too making you constantly hit refuse.

The community of TERA is awful. It's not much better than **** The GMs haven't moderated the game in forever so harassment, derogatory language, racism, sexism, and pure filth are everywhere in chat. You'll be hard pressed to run into a decent group of people anywhere in the game who aren't the LOL YOU'RE SO BAD types either.

I'm starting to run out of space so I'll just sum it up here. This is an awful game. Avoid it at all costs unless you really want a long grind.

Then enchant it, probably spending all of your hard earned gold on it, because it's literally impossible to make the in-game currency, well, IN-GAME without spending your hard earned real money in the cash shop to sell to someone. Which is hard because no one has money anymore. Content takes too long to come out, seen in the January Letter in the forums on the EME site, a much wanted/needed dungeon has been pushed back till March. We were promised it in January. This is just one of the many broken promises. This game is poorly optimized. Not even the best of the best computers can run it at 100%. The developer in Korea is more interested in milking money out of costumes. Prepare for the new classes being female (or at this point, Elin) only. Other than that, Tera Online is MoTs. More of the same monsters, more of the same 'let's copy world of warcraft'. The Leveling is poorly balanced, since you tend to out level the zones very very fast.
