The game is simply amazing. It's terrific. Don't let a bunch of internet trolls troll you. I played in the closed beta, and all the problems in the beta are fixed. I would give this an 11/10 but the character customization on some races held it back, so it only gets 10/10

Your attacks "feel" like they are connecting which is a detail that many MMOs outside of WoW often lack. The graphics are beautiful as well as the animations. LOTS of attention to detail. Some people will undoubtedly be put off by the cutesy graphics, but they are some bad ass looking races and mobs. Again, the animations and weapon/armor models are superb. In the very least, TERA is worth the box price. Two--thumps-up. Expand

There are a couple of MMOs I have been looking forward to - GW2 and Tera. After this weekend and after playing both, I can easily say Tera comes out on top. Tera has the best combat system in any MMO. Questing and leveling is on par with games like WoW but dungeons, world bosses and combat are out of this world.

TERA is a breath of new air in a genre that has been stale for quite some time. The visuals on this game are simply stunning. From beautiful landscapes to amazing characters this game will never cease to amaze you with lots of eye candy. And yet due to the powergul Unreal Engine the game isn't as hardware depending as SWTOR or GW2. The quest system is kinda dated with it's pick X or kill Y but it gets the job done. There is close to no grinding and the BAM system is quite awesome. Crafting is expensive but gathering is useful and rewarding. Overall i'd say that TERA is a very good and solid MMOG, one of the best i've played and the best korean game i've seen. Not everything is flowers thou, En Masse had some issues with subscriptions and had to open transfers from full servers but even that can't take away what TERA achieved: a new standard for MMOs. I never like the art direction, and I always thought content was severely lacking (offering "grinding" as a sole activity). A friend recommended I try the open beta, and I was hesitant at first - I hate Korean MMO's right? Well, let me say that while the game isn't going to win any awards for breaking the mold with standard fed-ex quests, etc., the combat in this game is so amazing that I have had a hard time going back to the "old way" of doing things in games like WoW. It is so good in fact that I spent more time playing the head start than I did the GW2 beta weekend. It is just that good. So, if you hated Korean MMO's in the past, give this game a shot. I don't usually play MMOs because of the boring combat. TERA is the first MMORPG a long time. I did play Vindictus, but I don't think that counts. Anyways TERA has combat that is very similar to Vindictus and Monster Hunter, but it has the open world and great PvP that those games were missing. Everybody should at least give this game a try.

The combat is fantastic as with the gameplay, endgame dungeons are not to be taken lightly as mechanics in BT such as your screen slowly going black if you don't burn or kill the targets correctly, these are good mechanics that add challenge on the already existing game style an should be commended for it. The flaws in the game come from the MMO style of 'get game, get gear, patch, more gear' which is, personally, a deeply annoying trend. The story quests are great, as with the many cut scenes. You don't get better questing until later levels (50-60) which is a shame as the most common complaint, the quests 1-10 should really be designed to 'hook' your audience, but the combat somewhat makes up for that.

A very solid 9/10, I would give 8/10 but 9/10 is the new 8/10 because rating systems are **** Only a few games have ever been 10's in history and nothing of that quality has been produced this year.

Combat is amazingly fun in pve, and twice as much in pvp - it could alone carry the whole game. Luckily it isnt the only bright spot Tera offers - the world (except the newbie zone) is humongous, epic and without loading screens. The crafting is complicated (i.e compared to wow) and rewarding. The instance finder works great, and instance boss fights are exhilarating.

The crafting is challenging and costly, but rewards you very well later on. The enchanting system is fun, and the extraction system is useful.

The Bad? I can't really think of anything that warrants reducing the rating -- I don't play on PVP servers but I hear that the camping is pretty ridiculous. Setting aside the 3 rules of New MMO's, you have to decide for yourself what will make you stay or leave. For me, TERA hits on almost every single note I could want from an MMO. True-Action combat that gives the feel of Mortal Kombat / Killer Instinct meets World of Warcraft; Graphics like nobodies business; Character creation is very diverse and unique, with a huge variety to choose from. I can keep going on and on about all the aspects of this game that I love. I think the best way to describe it would be Vanilla WoW or Vanilla EQ, or FFXI, these games all had very unique methods of game play, as soon as I started playing TERA I knew I was going to enjoy it. LvL 60 now and it's just amazing, I can't see myself getting bored of this game any time soon. Compare this game to SWTOR release, that game had a lot of story and game play, and most would argue that the 1-50 was pretty great! After that things went downhill because the game play just wasn't good enough to Sustain. TERA on the other hand, their Game play is SOOO good, they just lack in the quest, but the combat more than makes up for that. Look at WoW -- great game play and pvp, but poor questing system overall. This game is already great! It's going to get even better very soon, and to top it off, they didn't make 1892750189275098 servers, so that means each server has a GREAT population and GREAT community, makes questing and running instances and grouping for BAM's so easy. In this game instances are a bubble where players can farm their gear or whatever, but in lineage 2 the fact of not having any instances and totally openworld pve and pvp, lead players to declare wars , take zones, protect them, exploit some mobs that drop unique items and controlling that resources for themselves , they controlled everything in a whole server... that FREE world of lineage 2 was balanced but savage in old times... time ruined the game. Tera is the best MMO I've played since WoW vanilla, and the only one since my first (Asheron's Call) to get me truly addicted. Since other reviewers mentioned the excellent combat, I'll address some of the inaccuracies and common misconceptions in the negative reviews.

    1) Tera is not a "typical Korea grinder" MMO. Leveling is about the pace of WoW vanilla (probably faster) and there are more quests than needed to level to cap.

    2) The combat is skill-based. Don't believe the trolls saying it's a gimmick, everything about the system emphasizes player skill and rewards you for being attentive to what's happening on the screen (rather than staring at your skill CDs). BAMs have a variety of unique attacks all with specific "tells" which allow the observant/experienced player to do what is needed to avoid the attack. It might be easy to hit the BAMs, but you are rewarded for back shots and unlike other MMOs, are a much smaller region on the mob (~45 deg rather than 180 deg). Besides, aiming your attacks is most certainly not "the entire point of the action combat" it's just one small facet of it.

    3) The engine and net-code are superb, the reviewer who said otherwise is either a troll or a shill. The game runs amazingly well for how good it looks, and unlike most MMOs, can actually handle large crowds of players without becoming a slideshow.

and finally, the criticism I've heard most often, mostly from fanboys of other games who are jumping on a talking point to criticize Tera:

"Animation lock makes the combat slow and unexciting."

Anyone who has actually played the game for more than an hour or two knows how wrong this is. First off, "animation lock" is describing how many skills root your character's movement until the animation is finished. It certainly exists in the game, but it is essential to making combat strategic and does nothing to take away from the action. Even with the lock on some skills, all classes are still incredibly mobile in combat for two reasons:

    1) As you level up, many of your most important skills lose the animation lock entirely. You also get skills that can break animations mid-way.

    2) Every class has a plethora of skills that allow you to dodge, run, strafe, or charge WHILE dishing out damage.

WIthout the animation rooting on some skills, the game would devolve into Quake with swords and sorcery. Having certain attacks restrict your movement gives various skills differing amounts of risk v. reward. Every fight requires a delicate balance of damaging your opponent while still avoiding its attacks. It is also huge in balancing melee vs. ranged in PvP and making positioning and tactics matter more than raw twitch skill. "Animation lock" is critical to preserving strategy and preventing the combat from devolving into a spaz-fest. It's a feature, not a flaw.

Since I don't want this review to look like a marketing pamphlet, I'll outline some of the most glaring flaws. They aren't near enough to detract from all the awesomeness in the game, but they're worth pointing out nonetheless:

    1) Doesn't pick up till the 20s. This is why you have negative reviews that make no sense whatsoever to Tera players. It's very easy to get a skewed perception of the game by only playing a few hours. The big draw for most people is the combat, and it doesn't really get a chance to shine until you start fighting BAMs in your 20s. However, leveling is so quick it should only take you a day at most to get to this point.

    2) Overly sexualized characters: Yes, Tera has its fair share of pandering to horny males. It also has a short, nubile race with provocative outfits. While they're not exactly sexualized children (since their proportions are completely unrealistic) like some might have you believe, it is a little weird. I choose to ignore it since the rest of the game is so good. Tera also has armor skins so you can have your character wear a less revealing armor set while still keeping the stats of the armor that bothered you.

    3) Quests are fairly bland. They're not worse than vanilla WoW, but people expect more now. Luckily, the fun combat and beautiful environments make me not even notice this for the most part. Combat is what you're doing 95% of the time in an MMO, so making that activity FUN matters more than anything else. It doesn't matter how revolutionary your quest system is if the combat is the same ol' boring tab-target combat.

Great combat, lots of wizards, really fun to play. I'm interested to see how the political system plays out. It has all of the standard MMO features, but feels more like a console game. TERA could probably use 10% more wizards, but that's my only complaint.

I am really enjoying the combat in TERA. It's a nice change of pace from what I'm used to. The questing isn't revolutionary but I find myself really enjoying killing stuff. The boss fights are epic!

Combat is definitely amazing, enough to where I won't be able to play another standard mmo. The questing is a bit lacking, very typical and nothing revolutionary. For a day 0 launch the game is incredibly polished and the action combat is very smooth. BAM's are INCREDIBLE, so much fun, so interactive, keeps you on your toes. I have high hopes for the game and can't wait to see end game.

Once you complete it you are then returned to lvl 1 and the main game begins. This is outstanding for getting a look at some armors, skill animations/abilities and over all game-play of that toon. The combat is not stcky tab target, mash some buttons and get bored in 5 minutes, nor is it a "Korean grinder". En Masse, the publisher has taken steps to add quests and balance gameplay to a more comfortable NA style of game-play. Yes the interface and combat style is totally different from previous mmos. Combat, tanking and even healing are engaging. The "in the works" portions of the game I think is where the negative press comes in. The pvp battle grounds are not in game yet and open world pvp is based on guild vs guild and politics. PVP servers exist and are rather chaotic at the moment, sadly not my stronger game-play exp.

I personally love the fresh and new innovations Blue Hole has designed and added to Tera. The whole things runs really well with decent settings on a lower PC but above minimal requirements. My personal view, after playing mmos since UO in 1997, is that this is a diamond in the rough, that is being over looked due to much bigger names and franchises releasing near same time. New ppl logging in are amazed at the community and the over all experience within minutes. I hope this helps!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I created an account just to review this game and try to combat some of the misinformation people are spewing on her to down-rate this game.

The game's Action Combat is very refreshing to see in an MMO where the last decade all you had to do was tab-target and push a few numbers on your keyboard. While I admit this would not work on some hard mode fights in WoW and other games on dungeons you could usually just stand around and hop out of fire if it landed under you. With Tera you have to constantly be aiming at the boss (or teammates if you're a healer) planning your abilities and avoiding damage. The mobs in Tera have really cool animations as well. I just finished healing a Cultists Refuge group last night on my 40 Mystic and that was the most fun I've had healing in a very long time.

Try this game out you won't be disappointed!

It is a nice refreshing change to the combat systems of all other MMOs out there. Graphically it is a eye pleasure, even more as you get out of the starting areas. It is a Korea based MMO and therefore unlike most Western MMOs it is a bit more grindy that some maybe use to. Though this is offset a bit by the combat system which keeps you engaged a bit more than just standing there pressing attacks while downing a drink like other MMOs. If you are into healing this is a completely new experience than you will find in any game out currently. There are no healing bars that you click on, heals must be aimed at players or AoEs placed. Healers also provide support to the dps, have to be on constant movement around the field and on some fights are responsible for dps other targets. Can be a bit nerve racking at first, though quickly becomes a completely immersive experience. Again no standing there watching a healing grid waiting to play whack a mole. The crafting, enchanting etc system is a bit more tedious to really skill up. Crafting you will have access to every possible one (armor, cloth, leather, alch, focus etc) along with every gathering skill (mining, herb, essences). You could realistically level each one though it quickly becomes a money sink or gathering sink for certain reagents which only drop off larger mobs or instance quests. But to me this makes it much more satisfying to actually complete. Enchanting is the same way with a RNG to it if the reagents used (powders and a sacrificed item of gear) increase it. This generally means you probably will not be really enchanting the gear which is done through stages (+2-+12) till higher end tier items.

There is also no pay2win model here as some who have spewed here with not playing nor any attention to the actual discussions of the Western Tera. If you are looking for a chance in a MMO, do not mind a more grindy though generally rewarding experience with full attention and fluid situational awareness from all group members; then get Tera.

This game has renewed my interest in the MMO genre which I had just about given up on. There are elements that are standard fare such as the questing system, what sets this game apart is the combat system. The combat in all the characters I've played is just downright FUN. While the game has been recently released, there are relatively few bugs, and the gaming experience is generally smooth. When issues do rise up, the support team is also among the nicest that I have encountered, and quick to reply. I've read good things about this game, so i thought i had to give it a try. With no trial, and i couldn't find any buddy codes i decided to just jump in and buy the game, and pray that i don't get burned like in the past (DCUO, one of the most recent notable examples).

As i live in UK, i was torn between which version to buy, En Masse (North American), or Frogster (Europe). I decided to go with En Masse due to hearing good things about the community and polite staff and also because it would be a more English speaking community. however i believe having 2 different publishers with slightly different versions of the game could REALLY hurt the sales of the game, due to confusing new players

It took me a full day to actually download the game, due to the rediculous game size (18Gb), and then i had a few logging in problems.

Then i logged in, and after being utterly confused as to why i was starting at lvl 20, and searching forums/websites to see if it was a bug, or something, i persevered and found it was just a prologue. Good idea, badly executed.

Then i got onto Noob Island. and this is where i really started to fall in love with the game. It looks amazing. it plays amazing. sure, the quests are really repetitive, but a few times i have actually found myself killing too many of "x" mob just because i got carried away with the slaughter - the combat is just THAT fun!

I'm still on Noob Island, so i can't really comment on anything after the island, but i hear the game just gets better from then onwards. And the political system sounds like an interesting end-game, i'm not one for raiding so it's refreshing to see a new take on an MMO-end game that could just keep me interested!

Game changer. Tera pulls out that old, boring stationary 'tab' based combat and replaces it with an awesome action game. The questing may be old fair but with Tera's beautiful world and dynamic combat, it's more challenging and engaging than ever before. Play Tera for 15 minutes and not only will you be hooked but you'll never be able to go back to old style MMO's again.

While the game starts off fairly easy, with monsters and combat scenario's that may make you question how legitimate the action combat system really is, that all quickly changes once you hit level 20 and start fighting your first BAM (big ass monster). Fighting these very closely resembles a boss fight in the popular Monster Hunter series. Monsters rarely stay in one place, and attack in a wide variety of engaging ways, many of which will kill you extremely quickly if you do not dodge and block accordingly. On top of a truly engaging combat system, the games graphics and world design is simply beautiful. I have been playing MMO's since the early days of Everquest 1, and can safely say that this one is the most enjoyable that I have ever played by a landslide. Expand

Let me start off by saying this is a subjective review. I don't believe in objective reviews for the sole fact that you introduce what I like to consider the "godlike" element, in that you expect way too much from the game, and that most people who would like to think they're objective are anything but. I don't believe in objective reviews for the sole fact that you introduce what I like to consider the "godlike" element, in that you expect way too much from the game, and that most people who would like to think they're objective are anything but. I'm not going to fool myself and I'm going to look at everything in respect to other MMO's on the market.

    Gameplay:

Looking at everything from the big picture, this is your standard MMO experience. Your goal is to get to the endgame, and you do this by killing things and questing.

    Questing and Story:

The questing in this game is one of its shortcomings. It's all pretty much the generic, "fetch this" or "kill this" kind of thing. If you're expecting the quests themselves to be new or exciting, for the most part you're going to be disappointed.

If you actually play the game for its lore and take that into consideration, the quests do become somewhat more engrossing because the lore is high quality and coherent. They make you feel like you're actually making an impact to the world, even if you are doing essentially the same thing over and over. The lore helps break the monotony if you pay attention to it.

    Interface:

The interface is quite different from your standard MMO due to the fact that the combat is action-based. Simply put, there are two interface modes. In your standard combat and running around mode, the mouse moves your field of vision and affects where you aim your abilities. In the second mode, you have an onscreen cursor to do things such as open menus and move inventory items around.

There is somewhat of a learning curve to the interface, but it's fairly intuitive once you get used to it. Switching between the two interface modes is quite simple; all you have to do is hit "Alt" or "Esc". In fact, they made the transition even more user-friendly as certain queues or actions will automatically enable one of the two interface modes. For instance, if you move in any direction, the combat-mode will be enabled, while talking to a quest giver will enable the interface-interaction mode.

    Combat:

This is where the game absolutely shines. Other MMO's have your standard tab-targeting system where you stand still and cast abilities with no real consequence for not moving at all. In TERA, the combat is far more action-oriented. While I hesitate to say it's revolutionary, it's a significant improvement over the standard MMO system.

Each class has abilities that either mitigate damage or allow you to avoid it completely when you use them at the right time during combat. If you're really keen, you can even dodge a lot of things by running to the side or backwards at the perfect time. The game rewards you for doing this, by allowing you to pretty much eliminate any downtime if you're skilled enough with your dodging or mitigation.

Another aspect of the action-oriented combat where this game improves upon other MMO's is its combo system. Your abilities have the potential to chain together and create awesome effects, as well as lower their channeling times. The system is very fluid and natural once you get used to it, and is a lot more engaging than simply hitting your skills based on a cooldown-only system.

An unfortunate aspect of the combat is that the animations are locked, meaning once you start casting an ability you can't do anything else until the animation is finished. A non-locked system would be quite easy to exploit though, so it's not all bad in this regard.

    Sound & Music:

The sound and music in this game are very solid and what you would expect from a Fantasy MMO. I haven't come across any music yet that has made me say "holy crap this is EPIC!", but the music is definitely engaging and helps you immerse yourself in the world.

    Visuals:

This game looks amazing. There's not a whole lot else to say about it. The world was designed well, and is visually striking. It is probably the best looking MMO to date.

    Overall:

This has been the most enjoyable MMO experience I have had in a very long time, and TERA comes highly recommended from me. A must play for any MMO buff!

Tera sure makes promise on the "true action combat" that it so advertises, but that change alone to the MMORPG formula isn't enough to flip the genre on its head, especially when you've forgotten about other aspects of it.
