Tera has a great combat system and looks fantastic, however it suffers from many of the other issues other MMOs have.

To start it lacks PvP, it's entirely PvE, I mean you can challenge people to duels and play like 3 or 4 equalized battlegrounds, however here you have this fantastic PvP combat system focused on landing your abilities and yet it's entirely wasted on PvE where everything is so large and predictable that you have to be defective to miss your abilities more than once a fight,

Then you have the grinds, leveling is boring, getting worthwhile gear is a massive boring grind, and all that just so you can grind more dungeons, this game is all grinding, in order to get the best PvE gear you gotta beat the hardest PvE dungeon, in which case what do you even need the PvE gear for? Faster clear of that same dungeon?

Worse of all though, is the class Warrior, the game focuses so much on actually having to put effort into playing your class rather than just pressing tab and then pressing all the buttons and watching them hit, however Warriors undo all of that, with the press of the button they can gap close, stun you and increase their critical damage by like 170ish% the ability cannot miss unless you accidentally use it on the wrong person, or are actually defective enough to use it when the terrain will glitch you. Class takes no real skill and is all timing based ruining the combat system and what little PvP this game has.

Still with all the complaining I've done about this in this review I still give it a 10/10 because the only game that fixes these issues and requires more skill than Tera with more fun PvP doesn't even exist anymore, (Old Conquer Online, no longer takes skill to play since many updates gave everyone one shot un-aimed abilities.)

Even if Tera is garbage, when pit up against other garbage I just have to give it a 10, at least it's pretty and can be fun to play in duels if you don't duel any Warriors and their no skill ****

I personally didn't enjoy the PVP much but the BAM (Big As* Monster) fights make up for it. You can actually play the game well without having to buy anything so that's a plus. New introduction of flying mounts is INCREDIBLE!!! Once you reach level 65 you can fly over monster hordes to get where you want to go. I love doing the side achievements where you climb mountains to find walls where you can write stuff. Overall, Tera is fantastic for players new to MMORPGs and veterans. Expand

Let's face it, 90% of an MMO is killing things and Tera nails that. Overall pretty solid. The main draw is the combat. Fast paced and action based which is what sets it apart from other MMO's. It's less about optimizing your character on a spreadsheet and more about playing an actual game. Compared to a game like WoW every role from dps to tanking to healing is far more active. IE DPS are constantly chasing targets, dodging attacks, all while pumping out the damage. You don't stand in one spot for 8 minutes while performing a rotation.

There are some weaknesses in things like crafting, class balance and role distribution, and the questing follows the basic MMO model of "Kill 10 of x". Those are mostly tertiary problems which while annoying are over shadowed by the engaging combat.

The lore is interesting and its clear there's still a lot in store for the game. The release went well and there were server transfers offered at release. There was lag in major cities and I'm finding that with an AMD/ATI based system it can get jittery at times but once everything is loaded it runs at a smooth 40-60fps. I definitely recommend it. Graphics are cutting-edge with acceptable performance on max settings, all kinds of combat is skill-based be it PVP or PvE. (which I have to say is a true first for any MMORPG I've played in my 6+ years of gaming) No but seriously, you can pick any class and go solo bosses. Sure, it will take some time and effort but you will be fully rewarded once you manage to kill it. This says a lot compared to Blizzard's HURPADERP HULK SMASH 200K AOE 100% HITCHANCE boss logic from boss humanoids that are often smaller than you. Fantasy or not, It gives a mush and bland aftertaste in your mouth along with the restriction of having at least 25 organized people to have a shot at killing said bosses and if you fail, people leave. And when people leave, more people leave. Random match-up you say? Why yes! More failing and more loot-ninjas for everybody! Granted, wow was a good game for It's time but now It's a sinking wood-rotten vessel that has more holes than a Swiss cheese. Obviously you can find this in Tera as well if you have the ingenious idea of running head first into an end-game dungeon as level 1 but Blizzard actually allows players to get one-hitted at their own level for "Challenge". Yeah, we sure see how that concept worked out in Diablo 3, didn't we, Jay?

TLDR: Tera is everything Wow tries to be but on a new, fresh engine/graphics platform.

First of all, TERA isn't perfect. It can't ever achieve that great action combat you can expect from games like Diablo III or Skyrim. Now everyone has to be awake and constantly reposition themselves and aimFirst of all, TERA isn't perfect. It can't ever achieve that great action combat you can expect from games like Diablo III or Skyrim. However it gives you a combat that's well worth the effort, great visuals for a MMO and a huge world to roam about. No more people practically sleeping on the instance runs or raids! Now everyone has to be awake and constantly reposition themselves and aim their skills.

While the true action combat is awesome, it is also more taxing. I found myself getting tired in a few hours because in every fight (soloing) I had to constantly evade and pop appropriate skills. Also, this game has a somewhat steeper learning curve than your average MMO. I've seen tanks that do tanking worse than some healers and some healers who don't know that they're supposed to heal instead of DPS. While they're annoying, they will be weeded out once you get to higher levels and team up with a guild.

The graphics of TERA are amazing, if you got the hardware to run it properly. The characters look very detailed and every weapon and armor looks pretty awesome. Which is only appropriate as you are awesome as well. Still, there's some issues with the draw distance and some textures on characters load pretty slow. These will be fixed though, I hope.

When it comes to classes, TERA has the usual lineup. DPS, healer, tank, support. DPS having both melee and ranged versions. As you level you get new skills and spells, but also after level 20 you can buy glyphs to enhance the skills/spells of your choice. You might enjoy doing a spinning attack as a berserker, so why not invest in a glyph that gives you a 25% faster charge time? Or a healer will greatly benefit from a glyph that allows him to choose more targets for a targeted healing spell. You will have a limited amount of points for glyphs per level though, and every glyph has a value from about 1 to 5.

TERA has enough new in an old formula that it keeps the MMO gameplay fresh. Once the game has been available for everyone the elections for vanarchs (mayors pretty much) start. Vanarchs will be able to choose what things to develop in his region and set tax rates etc. It will be interesting to see how it will affect the gameplay. In the headstart many features and NPCs have been unavailable because of missing vanarchs. So, I feel like I can't give a permanent score 'till I know how much they will add to the game.

Overall I'm enjoying my time in TERA more than in any MMO since the old school EverQuest in the 90s. Since it has it flaws (that will be fixed I hope), I would give TERA a solid 8.5 for now, but I'll round it up to 9 since metacritic won't let me give such a number. I recommend people to at least try TERA. It's not for the lazy or timid, however.

I've been playing it for a month, playing with the unlimited trial, but eventually the game made me buy a copy before the free-to-play release in order to get some bonuses, and it was worth it! The game isn't perfect of course but, in all honesty, it deserved much more than it ddoes: the system works, it's pretty fun and, like I said, very different than usual. The classes are pretty varied and only downside is that their restricted to one weapon, but I personally found that to be a good detail actually (it limits steals within a dungeon team, since weapons are class restricted). Also, the races have no limitations in classes and I found that to be a BIG positive remark, since it gives you a lot of combinations and there's no real con or pro: every class-race combination works greatly and gives you a huge variation for your characters. The graphics are very good...on the characters and monsters, while the areas and some places seems lacking details and have bland textures (although some cities and areas ARE gorgeous). On the other hand, the characters, the npcs, the monsters are greatly animated, greatly detailed and I was amazed how the graphics were. Of course, some characters (the females) may have some..."particular" detailing on them...and I'm personally not bothered that much; I do like when games attempt to be brave by having some revealing female characters, without mentioning that the males too are exagerated in both their body mass and their armors (some are revealing, some are massively big). For the rest, I do have some complains: firstly, I hated that there's NO vendor outside the villages or main cities, and if you're filled with trash to sell, you're basically forced to go back (either on foot, horse, or using a scroll if you're lucky) and sell your stuff. At least you can teleport to the nearest post. The enemies aren't hard to defeat...but if you aggro some by going nearby, 2 are the possibilities: 1) you get hit and you'll be in combat stance, with your weapons out, and your movement will be slower until you defeat your enemies or run away (hard to do). 2) you run away for a good amount of time..only to find them right behind you and forcing you to beat them go out of combat stance. This is SO annoying on so many levels because the enemies will almost never let you go and they can follow you almost for more than 1 minute (I even had fun running around with a mob following me around a fireplace...for five minutes straight! And he wouldn't leave!). At leas the enemies are slow, but sure are persistent. And for last...the quests. I read a lot of reviews mentioning that among their complains, was the the questing due to the lack of originality and boredom. I have one thing to say: it is true...but why only TERA gets the blame? I haven't played tons of mmorpgs, but in more than one I've had boring quests, yet nobody mentions that little factoid, and I'm talking of games like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Aion, The Secret World, and many other small games with the same kind of quests. Also in TERA the questing can be boring, but personally for the wrong reasons: my feeling was that most of these quests weren't that "great" and could have used more "challenges" too. Infact, the best quests were the group ones, because those big monsters were fun to fight and killing one takes a little more time than usual. Yet again, not the best quests ever, but I don't see much reasons of blaming the game while we have many other titles with the same issues that nobody ever mentions, and I'm the type of player who enjoys questing, so I may have a word about it!. And for last, the Free-to-Play limitations. I have bought the veteran status weeks before the free-to-play launch and with that purchase I got more bonuses (no char limit, more bank slot) so I can't judge the limitations properly. But here's what I think: the 2 character limitation IS a big flaw because of the variety of classes and races...but it was expected. However, the price for an additional slot is just too high at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised if people are annoyed by the price (about 30 euros for ONE slot). You have one bank slot as a f2p player...but the slot alone (about 72 spaces) is very big and I'm still using one (and I'm level 40). Also here however the price is high and not sure if worth it. Other limitations aren't very big so far (less "auction house" actions, a limited amount of gold sent, and few others), and that's surprising considering the game is actually big and, except for some other details, the game doesn't limit much else (unlike SWTOR). All in all, it's a good game and now that's a f2p with not too many limits, everyone can give it a shot and enjoy it, because I personally think the game deserved some more praise than it did. Expand

What matters in the end is that you are going to be playing a game with a very meaty and powerful combat system, in both PvP, and against big monsters, in which player skill is extremely important.

And so I gave a try to TERA. I should say I never played Korean MMORPG before and I was always afraid of constant grinding. However, I was surprised by quests in TERA. I felt like I returned to original WoW - sometimes quests are even challenging (solo fighting BAMs, for example). Some people complain about generic quests, but what else can you expect from MMORPG (korean, particularly)? In games like that, you always work as a delivery man, who, however, most of his time cleaning locations from evil monsters. Nothing special here. Next, I'd like to mention graphics and locations design. In 3 words, they are great! Very juicy colors, huge detailed environments, modern-looking characters models and, in general, relatively good engine optimization (I don't have top-notch PC, by the way).
What I really enjoy is combat system. Yes, I've never played korean games before, but I did play american and european MMORPG. Combat system in TERA feels so much different from what I've seen before. Maybe it is not perfect, I agree, but it is so much more dynamic and fresh after years in WoW that I am still under positive influence. For example, when you are fighting monster in WoW, he / she always faces you (unless he / she is under stun effect). No matter how fast you run around him, he'll always will be facing you. In TERA, after monster land his attack or use his spell, it will take time for him to recharge and turn back to you. While he's recharging, you can perform any tactical moves, run around and score a combo or two! That is why it feels so amazingly different than regular MMORPG.
So far, so good. What about bad point? I don't really like UI. To me, it feels a little sluggish and non-intuitive. Moreover, sometimes it just fails to do what you expect. It is not really a big deal, but sometimes it hard to understand certain features. All in all, I like this game so far. Though it was a very squeezed review, I mentioned points I really enjoyed and felt good about. Hope to see you in Tera!

In the past few years, there have been a lot of MMOs pop up following the same basic formula played out by EQ2, WoW, WAR and the like. There's a lot here that is similar. There's a lot here that is similar. Questing follows the three basic paths (play postman, kill x number of x, pick up x number of x), and it's one of the dull points of the game. You have your equipment and enchants and stat itemization, just like those other games. The story is good at best, boring at worst. Crafting is uninventive and derivative. Also, the K-RPG lineage pops up from time to time as a distraction (big-busted female models showing too much skin, ridiculous cut scenes, failing to gather a resource node).

But, after an extended play of the game, you quickly realize that Tera is not about questing or exploring a storyline or crafting. What Tera is about is team combat, and once you walk down some long, dangerous, monster filled paths to get to that big bad boss with some friends, the game hooks you. It's about combat and exploration, and in those two regards it succeeds marvelously.

Think Monster Hunter or Phantasy Star Online, not WoW or SWToR. The combat is refreshing, though it takes a lot of getting used to at first, particularly if you're used to playing other MMOs. Instead of standing in spot and trading blows, you're dodging, looking for enemy context clues, and building up combos to deal monsterous damage or stagger the enemy. It feels nearly Devil May Cry or God of War in execution, and it's wonderful. You can mouse & keyboard or controller it up; both feel great.

In some bizarre, masochistic design decision, the game starts off incredibly easy. Easy as in extremely boring and dull easy. The starting zone is this cookie-cutter, happy island that one commenter in Area chat referred to as "Disneyland minus the fun." The devs clearly knew this, as there's a prologue that lets you experience level 20 combat from the get-go. It's dark, ominous, full of baddies, and is a total blast. Then, you get dumped into snoozeville. Fortunately, once you get past the 2nd zone, the game ramps up the excitement and the difficulty. This is when it truly starts to shine. As zones open up and enemies become more challenging, what you get is a huge exploration from boss fight to boss fight, with some thrown in for gear and experience. And even though it can take a while to get from one place to another, you won't mind, because travel is painless with all the eye candy.

This game is utterly breathtaking. To say it runs graphical circles around its competition is actually demeaning the beauty of it. Light effects and shadows add depth and ambience, colors explode off the screen, and animations are fluid and smooth like a AAA action game. At one point, I found myself stopping to just stare at a priest's spells, only to find myself squashed by a gigantic boss for not paying attention. It's MMO eye candy you've never seen before.

If someone says it's "just like WoW" or a "WoW clone," shut them down and stop listening. This game is about as similar to WoW as a Hummer is to a Corolla. Sure, they both have four wheels, an engine and a transmission, but the goal is totally different. This is an open-world dungeon crawl of the lineage of Diablo or Gauntlet with the combat genes from a fast-paced action game like Ninja Gaiden.

That said, it won't be for everyone. Those put off by K-RPG elements are going to find this game nauseating, If you're looking for a deep and complex MMO where you can theorycraft, this isn't it,

However, if you're a big fan of action games and dungeon crawls, give it a shot.

The graphics are great. The questing is the same as any other MMO currently out, but I honestly haven't felt like I have been grinding as the combat system is so much fun. I haven't noticed any issues with frame rate or distance. I look forward to playing this game for some time to come.

I cant give the game a 10 because of the common fetch and return quests, long PUG instance que times is also an issue. Game play is a bit different from WoW, I admit to being a clicker in WoW. This game is actually helping me move away from that a bit, due to the fact you really need to be comfortable using the keys on your keyboard, to your full advantage. This is actually a good thing for me. I admit I didn't want to like this game as much as I am, I have a full plate of games already that I'm playing ( KoA) or am going to be playing (Diablo 3 ). This game is already making it tough for me to consider that I might have to put it down one down, if I can at that.

I will be upfront and admit that I have been following Tera excitedly for a few years now. I was evry excited about this game and very scared as well. What I had seen and read made it look too good to be true and I was prepared to be disappointed with it - the track record of recent MMOs like Aion, Rift, FFXIV and SW:TOR made me sure that this game would let me down as well. Well it absolutely hasn't much to my surprise.

    Combat:
Combat is action based. Depending on your class you may have a few target lock spells, but 90% are aimed. Characters are stuck in their animations while performing an action in order to assist with balance (how OP would a mage that could cast and run be?). The animations are incredibly fluid as well, that was one of the things I noticed the first time I played. The combat sounds are distinct and solid, you /know/ when you have hit something. Something other MMOs lack. This is the first MMO where combat positioning is incredibly important for all classes - even healers. Admittedly the first 20 levels are a bit slow, once you hit around level 23 you really start to understand why this game is so much fun to play.

    Questing:
There are 4 types of quests; Storyline, Normal, Repeatable and Guild. While the Storyline quests are interesting and give some great rewards and XP, the rest are pretty boring and should be done while doing the Storyline quests imo.

I can't comment on the end game, but so far there are 2 things to do - Politics and Hard Mode dungeons (5 man) the hardmode dungeon mechanics look like raid mechanics from videos I have watched and politics look very intriguing. It will be interesting to see how that all works out in the end.

There are a few bugs at the moment, but nothing too unexpected from a brand new MMO, certainly not enough bugs to detract more than a point or two.

It's fairly obvious that the negative reviews here are coming from people that either haven't played the game, do not understand how latency affects gameplay or have played to a very low level (sub 14).

The artwork is amazing, character and creature models are great. Each new creature I run into, I amazed at the little details that make it interesting. The world is beautiful.

A new political system that I haven't seen done in games before, though it hasn't come into play yet, it will be interesting to see how it works.

Everything else is standard MMO, quest, kill mobs, level up. Overall I rate it pretty high because I really enjoy running around in the world and the combat.

Don't listen to the haters. While it's true that the questing in TERA is sub par, the fast-paced combat easily makes up for any shortcomings in that department. It's MMO combat that'S actually FUN. The only issues I have with the game are that it runs slow sometimes on my aging laptop (although it still runs smooth 90% of the time, provided I keep the graphics at three or lower) but that's my fault, and that the quests do get a tad repetitive at first, but that quickly gets sorted out by the time you hit level 10 or so. I am not sure why this game is getting so much hate, perhaps WoW fanboys are just that desperate to build their game, that they will tear down any other game that challenges it. I do need to say that the opinions expressed here are solely my own and in no way represent or give favoritsm to the company that makes this game. That being said, I hope you all enjoy my review of TERA and I look forward to playing with all of you at the Head Start.

I would like to start off by saying that the visuals in this game are quite impressive. More often than not I found myself in awe of some of the beautifully animated locales strewn throughout the game. That's not to say it was perfect though. The Open Beta was marred with tearing, blinding white spots and minor annoyances that will hopefully be patched out by the time the game launches or soon thereafter. Also, while the dungeons bosses were impressive, the lack of detail and overuse of duplicate scenery in them were not. It's not really a big problem as I enjoyed them nonetheless, but something that I thought I would note.

For a Korean game that surpasses Aion in visuals, I was expecting a more varied Character Creation. Don't get me wrong, the character models are absolutely stunning and worthy of praise. I was just expecting more options in the way of customizing your character, much akin to Aion. I mean, come on, who doesn't want to change their female Sorcerer's bust size? But all jokes aside, it wasn't too bad and in my honest opinion is done much better than the Character Creation of a game like World of Warcraft. However, people really need to get off the whole 'Elin are a pedophiles dream' train. The creature design in this game is amazing. Some of the monsters were really well done and awe-inspiring. Props to them in this department.

In just about every game I've played I always favor melee type characters, especially those who use a Great Axe. So yes, I did play Berserker. Though I also tried Sorcerer, Archer and Slayer. The majority of my experience was on the Berserker. The combat for me was fluid, fun and took more skill than a game like Aion or World of Warcraft. The first 20 levels were easy and I never died, however it was a great way to learn the game and get used to the combat for the content to come. As soon as I was able to do BAM's I was in love. The fights were exciting and required precise timing as well as the use of all my skills to not only stay alive, but do damage to the beasts. This was honestly where the game shined and I couldn't have been having any more fun. Dungeon bosses were even more intense and decidedly more impressive than your run of the mill BAM. The combat might have been over-hyped but I think it is one of the best features in this game. And the cool thing is that there is still more room for improvement, it can only get better people!

One of the weakest points to this game would be the story. I read all the quest text, paid attention to the cutscenes and gathered as much information as I could. But for some reason it just didn't strike the 'completely awesome' chord for me. That's not to say that the story isn't great, I just think it could be better and who knows, it might after 32.

Really, the only thing I didn't participate in was PvP. Sorry guys, but I truly hate PvP and you almost never see me do it. So if you want an opinion on that, you'll have to go elsewhere. I might end up trying it out sometime, but it's not a priority of mine.

Aside from some minor tweaks and improvements that will hopefully be fixed by the time it launches, this game is well on it's way to becoming a force to be reckoned with. If you want fast paced, skill based combat with stunning visuals and a detailed world look no further than this game. Like I said before, it can only get better and it's my hope that it will.

For a pre-launch review based on the first 32 levels of content I give this game an 9 out of 10. It's definitely one of the smoother betas I've participated in and has lots of room to improve. I hope you enjoyed reading my review and I will definitely see you all at Head Start!

The negatives for me are probably that I'd like a little more innovation in quests, but I don't see that they are any worse than 90% of MMOs I've played. There's enough instance quests, and then BAM fights starting at about level 19 to break up the repetition of "go kill x", "go gather x", "go talk to x".

The positives are the graphics, and environments that keep my jaw dropping with each new area, The bosses and BAM fights actually do require some thinking and strategy rather than just skill bar mashing. Tanking is more than just about keeping aggro since your blocks actually prevent damage to people behind you. The collisions based combat, while not as dynamic as something pure instance based like Vindictus, or some single player games, is a huge accomplishment and most people just don't understand the amount of complexity this adds to the server/net code. They've done a great job, and some minor annoyances like enemy pop up is acceptable to me given that it's only noticeable for me when traveling fast by mount. More important than any of that, and why I'm giving it a good review despite some issues is that I've been playing since CB1, and I'm still having *fun*. In a genre that was nearly dead to me, and generally hasn't kept my interest, this says more to me than any feature or bug.

    - Exploration is limited

So far played a ranged and melee character and have definitely had more fun as melee, but the game is easier as ranged. Overall I've been through about 2/3 of the content and enjoyed it. Will I continue to subscribe yes and hopefully some of the cons will be addressed.

Priest in this game is best played with others and there is no grouping penalty - quest objectives, gathering nodes can be looted by many people at once and questing in a group is really productive unlike other games which seem to emphasize solo leveling for maximum xp/hr.

And the Unreal engine strikes again, and the game looks awesome, animations are very well made and is well-optimized.They really created a deeply detailed world, just look at the armors :O(female chars FTW)

And the game is completely free, only armors look and things like dat require money.(ofc it can be bought from players by gold).

Im writing this review as a not so fan of mmorpgs that found this one quite nice, btw i dont know that mutch about mmorpgs, im the kind of guy that gets to lvl 20 or 30 and gives up xp

    GOOD STUFF:

    - The fighting style is really cool, you wont have that kind of mmorpg where you click on the mouse and eat popcorn while your char kills....POINT 1 for exceptionality xp

    - Sure you get to kill stupid creatures like trees that look like ents from the LoTR or pigs and hogs and stuff like that but you get to kill badass-looking monsters that seem like dungeon boss WAY more often than in any other mmorpg...POINT 2 xp

    - The graphics are godlike, no joke, its the main reason for me to be still playing this, you get such details that seem just like a ps3 game, part of the game is to enjoy the view xD and the cutscenes are equaly good...HERES another point to separate this game from the other free games in the genre.

    - Good comunity, i get help almost every time i ask for it, and its good to have that in a game where there are alot of huge creatures to kill in the game....once again im not refering to dungeons ..this part isnt that exceptional but its allways good to know :)

-The game has a game inside it, basically its a mix of League of Legends with raid with strategy with mmo, kinda confusing, didnt see it well yet, but seems really promising and the prizes are nice, this way TERA players can switch games without switching the games...hope you understood xp

-The game is relatively recent, and that means it will only get better, with new stuff, for example the game i refered top and the pet sistem that they implemented....not sure now when it was :(

-Unless you do teleports or pass through portals, you wont have any loading screens...to travel through the HUGE world of TERA you get a ride from a pegasus or a dragon and while it flies you can enjoy the view of the surroundings or check inventory or etc...the game never stops xD

    BAD STUFF

-Poor story and Quests kinda standard, you wont find a huge diversity, its the standard "kill that"..."grab those"..."give this message to these guys that are 1 inch away from me"...(good part is the monsters u kill sometimes are really nice-looking ones, and in this boring part enters the very amusing fighting sistem)

-The character customization is kinda bad, you dont have many diferent items or weapons, you cant be a berserker and NOT have an axe, you start with a class and thats the class you get....you cant be very creative in the approach you give to the char, no skill points, a lancer will allways be a hard tank, an archer will be a dps.... stuff like that

    - Lack of a good or even nice pet sistem, and that is something bad, if they where to implement a pet sistem like for example rappelz or even WoW that combined with the super graphics would be AWESOME xp

Possibly i didnt focus all the aspects, goods or bads, but with this you get a good idea of the game

Yes the questing is generic. But so is the questing in most MMOs I've played. The difference here is the world they have created is absolutely jaw dropping. Gorgeous visuals with action combat and cool looking architecture and mobs and I do not mind roaming around killing mobs and turning in quests. This has become my go to MMO. After having played MMORPGS for almost 20 years (since Ultima Online Beta) and most recently WoW for a long time I found this game to be very refreshing. Even though FF14 and GW2 are very solid titles, I prefer TERA because it feels more free and skill-based. Highly recommended. I had no trouble running this on laptop either, graphics are highly customizable. I play on EU server.

I'm playing on NA (en masse) so some things may be different for EU (gameforge) and i'm also playing more PvE than PvP.

Pros: - Truly free to play, spending money isn't necessary to compete if you're not borderline inactive. - The community on TERA is by far the best i've ever met in any MMORPG, that may be related to my specific server but that doesn't make it any less amazing.

    - The community on TERA is by far the best i've ever met in any MMORPG, that may be related to my specific server but that doesn't make it any less amazing. That alone would make me keep playing, but of course there are other reasons too.

    - The combat is really fluid and fun, especially against huge endgame PvE bosses / in PvP fights.

    - TERA's world is really amazing and makes for many beautiful screenshots.

    - With many different races + character customization options including an insane amount of different looking armors / costumes you can make your character look the way you want it to.

    - On TERA NA you can buy items you would usually only get with real money (cosmetic stuff / elite status) with ingame money, so if you play multiple times a week you can easily get both while not ever paying for anything if you so desire.

    Cons:

    - Most areas in the game are more than fine in terms of fps but when you visit a highly populated city your fps are likely to go below 20. Opening some UI as the inventory also makes your fps drop for a split second. Some of the huge end bosses also noticeably lowered fps for me (all graphic options are on max though).

    - If you're looking for complete immersion then TERA probably isn't for you, there are a lot of immersion breaking mounts and costumes.

    - The story isn't really jaw dropping, for me it's more about the interaction with other players and combat but a more compelling story wouldn't have hurt either.

All in all i would've rated this game an 8, but since i haven't found any other online RPG which hooked me like TERA did this deserves an extra point from me.

VERY solid game with true action gameplay in an open world MMO. The action isn't as fast, and responsive as say a single player action game, or one of those town hub instanced dungeons online games, but for an open world game, it's much more of an action game than most any other MMO out there. They keep making adjustments, that actually prove to usually benefit the game, unlike some others where updates just seem to take what was a good game, and make it worse. This doesn't mean I think everything they do is great, but I agree with the changes far more often than I'm against them. The profit model is also very fair, with it mainly revolving around cosmetics, boosts to gains, and extra quality of life befits like easier fast travel.

Many complain about the quests, but most can be completely ignored if you don't like them, just go bash mobs, and collect the rewards from the repeatable quests for doing so from the UI, rather than a NPC. As you level up mobs will drop shards that will give you some very nice weapons appropriate for your level. The repeatable quests you can get rewards for from the UI also give you tokens you can exchange for armour, and accessories, as well as provide you with crystals for your equipment. Result of this is that gearing up a levelling character is very easy, the equipment grind is just at end-game, and by the time you get there, which doesn't take too long, you'll know if that's a class you want to invest in. That's some examples of the kind of changes they've made to the game for the better.

Finding guilds and instance groups is easy as pie.

I gave it an 8 though because it's not perfect. There are still a couple things that I dislike. I prefer a WOW style 30 minute hearthstone over the town portal scrolls in TERA. They are hard to come by and expensive at low levels. Also I find myself having money problems for a large part of the early game. This could be because it's so new and the auction system isn't booming yet. I also feel they re-use some enemy textures a little too much and add a little bit of a different feature, but they still look the same.

Overall it's worth the money if you are looking for an MMO to play like I was.

I created a priest and was shocked at how awesome he is. Playing the classic Korean androgynous high elf I can thrash my enemies with awesome combs and without having to repeat the normal rotations I am so used to in other MMO's. That is one of the large reasons why I prefer to play this game over many of my other MMO's. When I play Tera is fullfills my needs not only for an MMO, but for an action game in where my character placement and skill are actually important. I gave this game an 8 overall just because while the combat is great I feel that the quests could be a little more stimulating.
One point that I must highlight about this game as well is the graphics. If you were, or are a fan of Lineage 2 and Korean games you will absolutely love this game. the character models are absolutely gorgeous, so make sure not to solicit your party members while in an important dungeon.
In a very harsh MMO market, I believe that Tera will stay alive and well. The community seems good and the game brings to the market elements that no others contain. I for one see myself playing Tera for many more years to come and have faith that the additional endgame will fulfill its patrons. As the current dungeons are a very fun and unique experience.

I enjoyed Tera for the combat. The problem with it is it's a mass of constant mobs. It gets dull quickly (which is a shame). If the game was as much fun as the combat, I'd still be playing it. I do wish Tera well but there are some big guns to beat if it wants to stay in the running.

The reason for this being that in my opinion, TERA is a social MMO more than anything else. The combat is refreshing and works well, but as others have pointed out, the quests are quite generic and you will rarely find yourself doing quests other than go here and there and kill X amount of monsters and go back. This is fine by me, and there are some very challenging quests of this nature mixed in with some nicely made dungeons that don't require masses of wiping and strategy making to get through them. Saying that, the later dungeons are not easy tank 'n' spank affairs which will challenge even the hardiest MMOer................(c'mon metacritic let us use paragraphs)...............Where the game shines is in it's social and political areas. It can be very easy to join up in small groups to get quests done if you find yourself struggling against some of the harder quest mobs, and so far most people in the game seem to be quite friendly, which usually means come the inevitable 30 day exodus that most new MMO's initially suffer from, TERA might make it through that to be even more friendly amongst its player base. However, a well thought out political feature of the game where players can vote for people to be a "mayor-like" character for their entire server will likely add some shenanigans and back stabbing amongst the power crazy.........................Graphically the game is fairly astounding. I run on a fairly old machine with DDR2 memory(!) and a now ageing but well served Q6600 at 2.8ghz alongside an AMD 6850 card. I can run the game not far from the maximum settings and achieve a steady 60 frames a second. I do however have to use D3DOverrider (google it) as the vsync, even though forced via the AMD CCC application - does not do its job..............If you are an MMO fan looking for a group-centric, social but sometimes challenging MMO then you probably owe it to yourself to give it a try. Some of the female 'armours' do look pretty whorish, but you can avoid those races if you think it's too much (Human females for example aren't nearly as bad as Elves). It runs fine on my 5-year old system (granted it's a good 5-year old system) with everything turned up pretty high, with major lag only coming from the capital city. Music is alright, though the voicework is forgettable. My only other major fantasy MMORPGs being WoW and WAR, I'll just compare the gameplay to those; combat is excellent and a lot more fun than WoW was. I played a squishy healer, and had no trouble soloing since I can actually avoid getting hit. What a novel concept. In groups I'm constantly running around repositioning myself to avoid boss attacks, while having to aim my spells instead of standing in one spot pushing heal whenever the tank gets low. I tried out a berserker as well (melee DPS) and was impressed that I had to think about combos, blocking, and dodging attacks instead of running a macro and taking a nap. Definitely the highlight of the game. Some people try to point out that most skills require you to stop moving for a moment, but if such wasn't the case ranged DPS would utterly dominate melee in PvP; besides are definitely a number of skills that you can fire off on the move. Quests are poorly done. Like WAR, the game at least doesn't waste your time and puts monsters and objectives right on your map for you. However quests were always your generic, 'kill X boars', 'gather Y plants' and repeated over and over. There were occasions were you got interesting 'hold the line for 10 minutes against hordes of enemies' type quests, but far, far too few. Quest XP is generally decent though. I didn't have to start doing extra grind beyond quests until the high 30s, and was even turning down quests before that as there were actually too many. Grind in general has been far less than I experienced in WoW and WAR. I generally only have time to play 2, maybe 3 hours a day and was at level 30 in a week, while that took me about 3 weeks back when I played WoW. One of game's big questing points are the BAMs, which are basically mini-bosses in the main questing areas. They are major fights that are hard to solo. You can skip them entirely, but if you want to see all the content you're going to have to get over it and group up once in a while. There are several instances, usually a new one every 10 levels or so. They start off very easy (did the first with 3 party members, that didn't even have a proper tank), but eventually you'll have to start being smart and taking your time through them if you don't want to wipe. Getting groups for them wasn't too bad, though there's definitely a tank shortage among players. PvP is very limited right now, but battlegrounds have been promised in the next major content patch. I didn't roll PvP server, so I can't fairly review the Guild vs Guild combat in this review. Finally, the races and class options were generally okay. Races are mainly cosmetic, with the racial advantages being fairly moot past the beginner areas. Classes had a variety of melee and ranged DPS, two healers/support classes and one tank. The one tank is the main problem with grouping right now, but there are plans to make the Warrior into a more viable (it's pretty flaky right now) evasion tank to ease the problems with getting a tank for instances and BAMs. There were no bugs or crashes I experienced, and no major lag outside of the capital city. All in all, I'm enjoying Tera so far. Will I play it for years to come? Unlikely, but some people seem to think MMOs need to last as long as WoW did; but if I get my fun out of it for a few months and move on that's fine with me. I'm getting my money's worth for now. Tera will seem to lack customization at first and it will seem to lack content, however that gets introduced starting at lvl 20. Experience: WoW, FFXI, FFXIV, EVE, SWToR, EQ, EQ2, Korean Tera Cons:
    - Not much variety in questing, pretty much your kill/gather/deliver quest variety throughout the game.
    - Path for leveling is also very much straight forward on rails type deal. At certain levels you will need to hit certain zones to get/complete quest of your level. This only really becomes a problem when you start
This only really becomes a problem when you start leveling your third or second character.
    - Lower levels are very easy, i would say they may even be to lowly tuned, because of the action combat system and your ability to dodge attacks many people may find the game somewhat boring through the stages of 1-30 ish as there is no feeling of real danger of death or real challenge in your questing.
    - Party size can sometimes be an issue when you have a large group of friends playing the game

    Pros:
    - Group Quest. I don't think this is talked about enough about this game, group quest occur in almost every zone you level in but are not needed to be completed to progress through the zone. What this does is it gives players an option to do these group quest which requires a little setup but offers greater item/exp rewards than your normal quest. Or to pass them if they do not want to go through the trouble. This allows players to interact socially when questing, make friends, meet people, etc, but does not punish them if they happen to be playing at off hours when they cannot create a group. While this setup is nothing new to mmo's it is worth mentioning that it's in the game.
    - Party Grinding. I started playing mmos in EQ and FFXI which is why I like that this is in this game, but most bam (Big ass monster) quest when completed will give you a repeatable kill quest, which than allows people to form parties to grind on these bans for the exp they give, which is usually plentiful, and the exp/item reward gains from the quest itself. This is sometimes a welcome reprieve from soloing.
    - The Action combat system is also very fun, but as mentioned above in the cons can sometimes make the game feel too easy.
    - PVP, I find the over world PVP in this game to be well done, along with the guild battle system which allows players to declare war on a guild for some awesome over world pvp goodness. Currently no battlegrounds in the game however if you are a battleground enthusiast - Pretty game is pretty. Overall Tera is a very good game, but it's not one that I can suggest to everyone. The cons that i mentioned will affect certain people more than others. because of the way the questing system is currently setup, which is basically going from hub to hub doing kill/gather/deliver quest for some people It may feel like a very large grind. While the combat system does take the edge off a little, as mentioned when you get the hang of your class, and the best way to handle certain mobs it also makes the game sometimes feel like it's to easy and to repetitive. Add on to that what feels to be a very linear progression model, it does make the game feel like somewhat of a grind, this is even more prevalent on your 2nd or 3rd 60. However their are ways to change it up, they do have dungeons and a dungeon finder system, they also have ways via repeatable quest to grind bams in a party setting so you can focus on your job mechanics, ie if your a priest you can actually be healing a party instead of grinding quest, or if your a tank you can practice your tanking. These are welcome reprieves and are quite fun.

The fighting system is extremely fluid, people moving everywhere all the time while dodging, etc. Melee really shine in this game but casters, especially healers, are still a lot of fun.

The bad is the quests. The writing in them really sucks. If the quest isn't a story (red) quest then chances are that it isn't worth reading. I also don't really care for the crafting system. It isn't very intuitive as far as components, runes, and stuff go. The voice acting and cutscenes are nice after the intro levels - I admit that those are pretty bad.

This game has a TON of potential and is definitely worth a try. Also, anyone who says this is a WoW clone has never played it or they've never played WoW. Quests are crap much like WoW but combat wise it couldn't be more different.

Overall, I LOVE the combat and PVP in this game and managed to lure 5 friends to try it. All of them have loved it just as much, even a couple to my surprise. If you enjoy action combat RPG's, then definitely give TERA a chance. The website gives a ton of helpful game info for anyone whom is not familiar with the game yet.

It's not a 10, and very very very few games deserve to be. I give it a solid 8.5 (wru half scales?) because the questing and storylines are somewhat weak, however the combat makes up for those shortcomings.

After playing all the CBTs and having an early start in OBT and playing to the current cap of level 32 (and now to 43 after going live) I've got to say that this is quite easily the best MMORPG I've played.

Now, that is based on my previous experience in MMORPGs and my initial favour towards eastern art direction and architecture so your mileage might vary on that opinion. And that is what initially drew me to this game to begin with, but what has kept me is the combat and gameplay as well as the community.

The problem I have with this game, is levels 1 - 20 are a bit of a chore. While the combat is ace, your early skills aren't indicative of how varied the combat can be in later levels, so it feels very much like your usual stale MMORPG with collection quests. En Masse valiantly have tried to counter this with adding extra moves to bosses and monsters, trying to make it more of a challenge, as well as the prologue intro, but it's essentially going to remain quite stale.

This is where I think a lot of players falter, and certainly where I faltered in a number of my concerns to begin with. I did wonder if the quests would change, if there'd be actual variation, if the combat was going to stay as clicking the mouse button and dodging blindly because of how easy it was.

I will mention the need for a solid community base to fully enjoy this game. It promotes parties, it promotes politics and it promotes guilds. If you endeavour to solo it, your enjoyment is going to be less than what it could be if you had a group of friends. They have tried to counter this with cross-server LFG tools, and it actually fairs extremely well. But this is just for instanced dungeons, not the open world (for obvious reasons). While there is a single-server LFG tool for open world, not many people utilise it because they are already with their guild parties.

Back to the combat. It's great. If you make it past the earlier levels (and let's be honest, it doesn't take long in this game) then you're in for a treat. The quests are by and large, the same. However, this isn't a problem. Why? Because the combat is so **** sweet. You have a quest to kill 20 monsters, that sounds tedious, right? Wrong! They are usually quite condensed so you can run around and agro as many as you like and give yourself a real challenge.

As a slayer, I'm close quarters, high evasion, damage through combinations. I will pick around four monsters, gather them up and play it almost literally like I was playing God of War (with limitations of it being an MMORPG, of course). And it is intensely satisfying. The combat is fluid, it *feels* strong, the sound effects make it sound like my attacks are connecting and that they are really doing damage. My varied options of evading, stunning, knocking down, slashing everything in my range - it's so satisfying. The one single downside to this is that I can never go back to a traditional combat styled MMORPG. It's that satisfyingly good.

The community, originally it was god-awful. People in open chat made it comparable to Barrens chat, it was bad. However, people seem to have settled in or the players testing the waters have dropped off and people who really care about the game have stayed. The open world chat is still full of drama, but that's a good thing. It's open world PvP with a high emphasis on Guild vs Guild PvP in the open world - so of course you're going to have people beating their chests for everyone to see.

People seem to love to play their roles well because of how satisfying it is to play them well. I have never once been in a bad instanced party, it's either good, or great, or awesome, never bad.

Enchanting weapons is interesting, you take an item from the merchant, your weapon and another weapon of that tier and try to enchant it. The rarity of the sacrificial weapon increases the chance, but are also valuable weapons themselves so that is the result of risk of loss which makes it a bit interesting, but not soul destroying if you fail an enchant.

Gathering is awesome, you can mine, dig plants, take essence and the incentive to stop killing monsters and gather things is that you actually get beneficial buffs to your character which aids in killing more monsters. I haven't tried making any armour or weapons or anything like that, that stuff doesn't interest me. But I do like gathering.

Also, if there is a queue on the server, after 10 minutes of waiting you get an XP bonus for every minute longer you wait. A nice addition for having to wait in queue.

Of course there are still things I don't like about the game, and maybe this is still the honeymoon period, but I can't see myself lessening my enjoyment if this is how much fun I'm having only at level 32 with just two instances to play. Bring on retail!

If you can get past the eastern graphics and the hilariously awful race that is the Elin, you may well enjoy this game also.

The characters models are incredibly imaginative and well modeled. Most of the nonsense from previous MMOs have been removed, however TERA is not without it's own monotony; The starting zone is the same for all races, so rolling multiple classes gets fairly tedious quickly. The questing system is fairly standard and there aren't too many changes to the formula. Perhaps playing this game as a singleplayer game would be a mistake. Where this game shines is in the group mechanics, it is very fun to play with your friends. Other major MMOs certainly took many years to get to where they are at right now. Even with the technological advances, expecting TERA to be released and to dominate right off the bat is overall unrealistic and delusional. Though again, the potential is there. Like a good wine, a good MMO needs time, effort and care to properly mature.

In my case the noticing of eventual bugs and things that could be fixed and added in the future just enhances that unique experience of being in a vanilla version of a very promising MMO.

It's reputation and daily system are worth the time spent doing them, as they are a great source of money. But getting the reputation rewards often takes a lot of time. It is not clear what is in the future for Tera at 60. But with games like GW2 coming out, Tera offers a way for players to play for free, using Chronoscrolls (similar to PLEX) and not have to spend all of their money to look good. As unlike other games, who might make you spend way more than $15 a month, to acquire good looking items. Things like remodeling equipment, dying, hats are all available in game for gold. Just as Chronoscrolls are purchasable by acquiring gold. By factoring that both Tera and GW2 are free to play when the system becomes available. I will have to tip my hat towards Tera for offering such cosmetic and vanity systems available in game through quests, achievements, and reputation. I can not help giving this an 8, although I will probably drop by later this year and change it into a 7.
What is TERA? Combat. Enough said.
The combat feels fantastic- the animations convey perfectly the sheer weight of a ludicrously large axe or the swiftness of the twin blades. Also, its graphics are so good that, in combination with its combat, every other MMO I see seems subpar.

The combat feels fantastic- the animations convey perfectly the sheer weight of a ludicrously large axe or the swiftness of the twin blades.
Also, its graphics are so good that, in combination with its combat, every other MMO I see seems subpar.

This game has, however, FOUR MAJOR FLAWS:
    1) Generic questing. Tera has amazing combat and it's gonna make you GRIND THE HELL OUT OF IT. It doesn't grow too tedious though, since, with the implementation of the PvP Battlegrounds, you can level up significantly faster. The combat is also hard to master so the grinding helps with that too-- but it's still grindy.

    2) Lack of additional activities, save for crafting. In WoW (i'm not a fanboy, in fact i've only played the free trial) you can roleplay, play minigames and heck, go in a pub and get wasted. In Tera RPing is completely up to the players (there are some nice emotes though) and the only thing you can do with your character, however alive he/she may feel, is fight stuffs.

    3) Lack of endgame. The journey to lvl 60 is one of the best, and i'd recommend going through it for the sake of the story alone. However once you get to lvl 60, you will do dailies, and grind dungeons to get better gear to (drumroll) grind the same dungeons more easily. Playing on a PvP server can add a feeling of purpose since you can just go around PKing (the action combat ensures it never gets boring) but similarly, other lvl60s are gonna make your life hell until you get leveled and geared up.

    4) The company seems to be unraveling. A new class is in the making, which is great. But it's gonna wear leather armor (already 3 classes competing for it in dungeons) and it's the first class that's gonna have a race restriction. "Coincidentally" the lucky race is the one composed of underage-girl-lookalike-ancient-sprites known as Elins (same as the Lyns in Blade and Soul but only females). Given that Elins were always receiving special treatment, this is against the initial promise we were given: "any sex of any race can become any class".

    5) Priests are unkillable.
    ...alright I'm kidding :P

I recommend this for the combat, graphics and story.
But as you're approaching lvl 60, hug a pillow and say your goodbyes, cause that's all this game has to offer.
Still, the other MMOs are REALLY gonna feel bad: I gave up on Tera during fall, after having played for ~2 years, and since then I can't find another game to get me to love it so much.
They either look ugly or cartoonish, or the combat is dull as hell. :<
I wish we see Tera's successor soon :D

There is a lot of grinding involved and if you like playing solo ( like me ) its a lot harder to fight against BAM's and grind them. If you get stuck in an area full of mobs then just aggro on you and keep going. This is okay if you are a higher level with health potions, but if you just entered the area your in a world of hurt. The game gets really interesting lvl 20 or 30 and above. Dont let the negatives change your choice on this game because its the best ive played in a while. Expand

The game is an alright game and since its free to play its worth a look at.
Graphics, the graphics are ok but there still like the graphics you got back on the ps3 when it first came out.
Sound, it's ok but nothing stands out. Gameplay, so we all heard about the battle sytem ecpetaily with the Lancer(The Tank). My character was a Lancer on a PvP server. it was difficult at first but I

PvP, pvp is both in the world wondering around and in the arena, fyi there are campers waiting for you to come out of town, not alot but its there. Arena was kinda a joke it seemed one sided as a tank I cant hold my sheild for long so I'll loss eventually and as for like a DD class the archer will own.
Dungeons, So this is one reason why I stayed on the PvP server. If I queue up for a dungeon i will most likely get it within a 5-10min wait time while a DD would be waiting 1-2hrs.
Overall, It's not bad as people say, it does get boring around the lvl40 area but that was me without freinds, plus that happens to any mmo you play it will get boring. It's deffinently worth a look at. if its not your cup of tea then at least you can say you tryed it and it just wasnt for you, dont just take it from me or any other reviewer check it out yourself.

-F2P model is generally less onerous than other MMOs. You even get a decent mount for free early on.

    CONS
-Terrible default controls (although there are robust customization options)
    -Annoying mini-map.
-Forgettable story/plot. I enjoyed the game more after I started skipping all the dialogue.
-You can't cancel an attack once started, making combat less fluid than it could be. (For example, you can't decide to dodge while you're in the middle of an attack).

PRO or CON (depends on your taste)
-Strong Asian sensibilities, although not an anime art style.
-Both male and female costumes/armors are designed to be more sexy than functional.
-There are all kinds of zany mounts and costumes, which can be immersion breaking but fun. This game isn't really about immersion anyway.

    OVERVIEW
For those interested in an action MMO, I highly recommend trying this game out. It's the only true action combat experience I've found so far, and it costs nothing to try. The introductory area gives you a good idea what your experience will be like playing the rest of game. If you particularly care about story, it's probably not for you, but if you enjoy the combat, there's a lot of entertainment to be had.

Tera sure makes promise on the "true action combat" that it so advertises, but that change alone to the MMORPG formula isn't enough to flip the genre on its head, especially when you've forgotten about other aspects of it.

That being said, Tera is in surprisingly good shape for a game so early in its life cycle. The journey to level cap is mostly entertaining, endgame content is available, and the core gameplay elements are solid.

Action-oriented combat and interesting graphics aren't enough to overcome what is overall a rather bland experience.
