I personally didn't enjoy the PVP much but the BAM (Big As* Monster) fights make up for it. You can actually play the game well without having to buy anything so that's a plus. New introduction of flying mounts is INCREDIBLE!!! Once you reach level 65 you can fly over monster hordes to get where you want to go. I love doing the side achievements where you climb mountains to find walls where you can write stuff. Overall, Tera is fantastic for players new to MMORPGs and veterans. Expand

    .

VERY solid game with true action gameplay in an open world MMO. The action isn't as fast, and responsive as say a single player action game, or one of those town hub instanced dungeons online games, but for an open world game, it's much more of an action game than most any other MMO out there. They keep making adjustments, that actually prove to usually benefit the game, unlike some others where updates just seem to take what was a good game, and make it worse. This doesn't mean I think everything they do is great, but I agree with the changes far more often than I'm against them. The profit model is also very fair, with it mainly revolving around cosmetics, boosts to gains, and extra quality of life befits like easier fast travel.

Many complain about the quests, but most can be completely ignored if you don't like them, just go bash mobs, and collect the rewards from the repeatable quests for doing so from the UI, rather than a NPC. As you level up mobs will drop shards that will give you some very nice weapons appropriate for your level. The repeatable quests you can get rewards for from the UI also give you tokens you can exchange for armour, and accessories, as well as provide you with crystals for your equipment. Result of this is that gearing up a levelling character is very easy, the equipment grind is just at end-game, and by the time you get there, which doesn't take too long, you'll know if that's a class you want to invest in. That's some examples of the kind of changes they've made to the game for the better.

Tera has a great combat system and looks fantastic, however it suffers from many of the other issues other MMOs have.

To start it lacks PvP, it's entirely PvE, I mean you can challenge people to duels and play like 3 or 4 equalized battlegrounds, however here you have this fantastic PvP combat system focused on landing your abilities and yet it's entirely wasted on PvE where everything is so large and predictable that you have to be defective to miss your abilities more than once a fight,

Then you have the grinds, leveling is boring, getting worthwhile gear is a massive boring grind, and all that just so you can grind more dungeons, this game is all grinding, in order to get the best PvE gear you gotta beat the hardest PvE dungeon, in which case what do you even need the PvE gear for? Faster clear of that same dungeon?

Worse of all though, is the class Warrior, the game focuses so much on actually having to put effort into playing your class rather than just pressing tab and then pressing all the buttons and watching them hit, however Warriors undo all of that, with the press of the button they can gap close, stun you and increase their critical damage by like 170ish% the ability cannot miss unless you accidentally use it on the wrong person, or are actually defective enough to use it when the terrain will glitch you. Class takes no real skill and is all timing based ruining the combat system and what little PvP this game has.

Still with all the complaining I've done about this in this review I still give it a 10/10 because the only game that fixes these issues and requires more skill than Tera with more fun PvP doesn't even exist anymore, (Old Conquer Online, no longer takes skill to play since many updates gave everyone one shot un-aimed abilities.)

Even if Tera is garbage, when pit up against other garbage I just have to give it a 10, at least it's pretty and can be fun to play in duels if you don't duel any Warriors and their no skill ****

I'm playing on NA (en masse) so some things may be different for EU (gameforge) and i'm also playing more PvE than PvP.

Pros: - Truly free to play, spending money isn't necessary to compete if you're not borderline inactive. - The community on TERA is by far the best i've ever met in any MMORPG, that may be related to my specific server but that doesn't make it any less amazing.

    - The community on TERA is by far the best i've ever met in any MMORPG, that may be related to my specific server but that doesn't make it any less amazing. That alone would make me keep playing, but of course there are other reasons too.

    - The combat is really fluid and fun, especially against huge endgame PvE bosses / in PvP fights.

    - TERA's world is really amazing and makes for many beautiful screenshots.

    - With many different races + character customization options including an insane amount of different looking armors / costumes you can make your character look the way you want it to.

    - On TERA NA you can buy items you would usually only get with real money (cosmetic stuff / elite status) with ingame money, so if you play multiple times a week you can easily get both while not ever paying for anything if you so desire.

    Cons:

    - Most areas in the game are more than fine in terms of fps but when you visit a highly populated city your fps are likely to go below 20. Opening some UI as the inventory also makes your fps drop for a split second. Some of the huge end bosses also noticeably lowered fps for me (all graphic options are on max though).

    - If you're looking for complete immersion then TERA probably isn't for you, there are a lot of immersion breaking mounts and costumes.

    - The story isn't really jaw dropping, for me it's more about the interaction with other players and combat but a more compelling story wouldn't have hurt either.

All in all i would've rated this game an 8, but since i haven't found any other online RPG which hooked me like TERA did this deserves an extra point from me.

PvP, pvp is both in the world wondering around and in the arena, fyi there are campers waiting for you to come out of town, not alot but its there. Arena was kinda a joke it seemed one sided as a tank I cant hold my sheild for long so I'll loss eventually and as for like a DD class the archer will own.
Dungeons, So this is one reason why I stayed on the PvP server. If I queue up for a dungeon i will most likely get it within a 5-10min wait time while a DD would be waiting 1-2hrs.
Overall, It's not bad as people say, it does get boring around the lvl40 area but that was me without freinds, plus that happens to any mmo you play it will get boring. It's deffinently worth a look at. if its not your cup of tea then at least you can say you tryed it and it just wasnt for you, dont just take it from me or any other reviewer check it out yourself.

After having played MMORPGS for almost 20 years (since Ultima Online Beta) and most recently WoW for a long time I found this game to be very refreshing. Even though FF14 and GW2 are very solid titles, I prefer TERA because it feels more free and skill-based. Highly recommended. I had no trouble running this on laptop either, graphics are highly customizable. I play on EU server.

-Terrible default controls (although there are robust customization options)
    -Annoying mini-map.
-Forgettable story/plot. I enjoyed the game more after I started skipping all the dialogue.
-You can't cancel an attack once started, making combat less fluid than it could be. (For example, you can't decide to dodge while you're in the middle of an attack).

PRO or CON (depends on your taste)
-Strong Asian sensibilities, although not an anime art style.
-Both male and female costumes/armors are designed to be more sexy than functional.
-There are all kinds of zany mounts and costumes, which can be immersion breaking but fun. This game isn't really about immersion anyway.

    OVERVIEW
For those interested in an action MMO, I highly recommend trying this game out. It's the only true action combat experience I've found so far, and it costs nothing to try. The introductory area gives you a good idea what your experience will be like playing the rest of game. If you particularly care about story, it's probably not for you, but if you enjoy the combat, there's a lot of entertainment to be had.

I can not help giving this an 8, although I will probably drop by later this year and change it into a 7.
What is TERA? Combat. Enough said.
The combat feels fantastic- the animations convey perfectly the sheer weight of a ludicrously large axe or the swiftness of the twin blades. Also, its graphics are so good that, in combination with its combat, every other MMO I see seems subpar.
I can not help giving this an 8, although I will probably drop by later this year and change it into a 7.

The combat feels fantastic- the animations convey perfectly the sheer weight of a ludicrously large axe or the swiftness of the twin blades.
Also, its graphics are so good that, in combination with its combat, every other MMO I see seems subpar.

This game has, however, FOUR MAJOR FLAWS:
    1) Generic questing. Tera has amazing combat and it's gonna make you GRIND THE HELL OUT OF IT. It doesn't grow too tedious though, since, with the implementation of the PvP Battlegrounds, you can level up significantly faster. The combat is also hard to master so the grinding helps with that too-- but it's still grindy.

    2) Lack of additional activities, save for crafting. In WoW (i'm not a fanboy, in fact i've only played the free trial) you can roleplay, play minigames and heck, go in a pub and get wasted. In Tera RPing is completely up to the players (there are some nice emotes though) and the only thing you can do with your character, however alive he/she may feel, is fight stuffs.

    3) Lack of endgame. The journey to lvl 60 is one of the best, and i'd recommend going through it for the sake of the story alone. However once you get to lvl 60, you will do dailies, and grind dungeons to get better gear to (drumroll) grind the same dungeons more easily. Playing on a PvP server can add a feeling of purpose since you can just go around PKing (the action combat ensures it never gets boring) but similarly, other lvl60s are gonna make your life hell until you get leveled and geared up.

    4) The company seems to be unraveling. A new class is in the making, which is great. But it's gonna wear leather armor (already 3 classes competing for it in dungeons) and it's the first class that's gonna have a race restriction. "Coincidentally" the lucky race is the one composed of underage-girl-lookalike-ancient-sprites known as Elins (same as the Lyns in Blade and Soul but only females). Given that Elins were always receiving special treatment, this is against the initial promise we were given: "any sex of any race can become any class".

    5) Priests are unkillable.
    ...alright I'm kidding :P

I recommend this for the combat, graphics and story.
But as you're approaching lvl 60, hug a pillow and say your goodbyes, cause that's all this game has to offer.
Still, the other MMOs are REALLY gonna feel bad: I gave up on Tera during fall, after having played for ~2 years, and since then I can't find another game to get me to love it so much.
They either look ugly or cartoonish, or the combat is dull as hell. :<
I wish we see Tera's successor soon :D

Im writing this review as a not so fan of mmorpgs that found this one quite nice, btw i dont know that mutch about mmorpgs, im the kind of guy that gets to lvl 20 or 30 and gives up xp

    GOOD STUFF:

    - The fighting style is really cool, you wont have that kind of mmorpg where you click on the mouse and eat popcorn while your char kills....POINT 1 for exceptionality xp

    - Sure you get to kill stupid creatures like trees that look like ents from the LoTR or pigs and hogs and stuff like that but you get to kill badass-looking monsters that seem like dungeon boss WAY more often than in any other mmorpg...POINT 2 xp

    - The graphics are godlike, no joke, its the main reason for me to be still playing this, you get such details that seem just like a ps3 game, part of the game is to enjoy the view xD and the cutscenes are equaly good...HERES another point to separate this game from the other free games in the genre.

    - Good comunity, i get help almost every time i ask for it, and its good to have that in a game where there are alot of huge creatures to kill in the game....once again im not refering to dungeons ..this part isnt that exceptional but its allways good to know :)

-The game has a game inside it, basically its a mix of League of Legends with raid with strategy with mmo, kinda confusing, didnt see it well yet, but seems really promising and the prizes are nice, this way TERA players can switch games without switching the games...hope you understood xp

-The game is relatively recent, and that means it will only get better, with new stuff, for example the game i refered top and the pet sistem that they implemented....not sure now when it was :(

-Unless you do teleports or pass through portals, you wont have any loading screens...to travel through the HUGE world of TERA you get a ride from a pegasus or a dragon and while it flies you can enjoy the view of the surroundings or check inventory or etc...the game never stops xD

    BAD STUFF

-Poor story and Quests kinda standard, you wont find a huge diversity, its the standard "kill that"..."grab those"..."give this message to these guys that are 1 inch away from me"...(good part is the monsters u kill sometimes are really nice-looking ones, and in this boring part enters the very amusing fighting sistem)

-The character customization is kinda bad, you dont have many diferent items or weapons, you cant be a berserker and NOT have an axe, you start with a class and thats the class you get....you cant be very creative in the approach you give to the char, no skill points, a lancer will allways be a hard tank, an archer will be a dps.... stuff like that

    - Lack of a good or even nice pet sistem, and that is something bad, if they where to implement a pet sistem like for example rappelz or even WoW that combined with the super graphics would be AWESOME xp

Possibly i didnt focus all the aspects, goods or bads, but with this you get a good idea of the game

I got Tera (European Version) after hearing it had gone Free To Play. And I am immediately met with a problem. The download of the game itself. It took 24 hours just to download the game. I come back early just to play more of the game. However, there are now server queues, after an hour of waiting, I give up and hope they are fixed soon. But that doesn't happen. I then decided it would be better to ditch my character (It was only Level 9 anyway) and start fresh. This seriously annoyed me. GameForge have provided horrible support, which is sad because this game was amazing. But I am reviewing the game, not the service. The game is amazing fun to play. A lot of complaints have been about the quests, but I actually find the quests quite fun to do. The action is incredible. I haven't even seen all the game has to offer yet, but am really looking forward to it. Tera may have it's problems. But if you are willing to endure those issues, you're in for an amazing experience Expand

I never gave Tera the time when it was released on subscription (played about 4 hours) but recently went back now it is F2P to see what had changed and have been impressed.
Playing on the EU servers with a Warrior (aka rogue!) and I am enjoying the combat. In the starter island there is a good amount of running around but once you hit the mainline you get a horse and things improve.

Still need to understand all the ins and outs of the game but combat and graphics have never been so good in an MMO.

One thing, the server/client lag in the cities can be bad at times (and even in the world areas) which is the biggest downside of the game so far.

    Definitely worth a try.

I've been playing it for a month, playing with the unlimited trial, but eventually the game made me buy a copy before the free-to-play release in order to get some bonuses, and it was worth it! The game isn't perfect of course but, in all honesty, it deserved much more than it ddoes: the system works, it's pretty fun and, like I said, very different than usual. The classes are pretty varied and only downside is that their restricted to one weapon, but I personally found that to be a good detail actually (it limits steals within a dungeon team, since weapons are class restricted). Also, the races have no limitations in classes and I found that to be a BIG positive remark, since it gives you a lot of combinations and there's no real con or pro: every class-race combination works greatly and gives you a huge variation for your characters. The graphics are very good...on the characters and monsters, while the areas and some places seems lacking details and have bland textures (although some cities and areas ARE gorgeous). On the other hand, the characters, the npcs, the monsters are greatly animated, greatly detailed and I was amazed how the graphics were. Of course, some characters (the females) may have some..."particular" detailing on them...and I'm personally not bothered that much; I do like when games attempt to be brave by having some revealing female characters, without mentioning that the males too are exagerated in both their body mass and their armors (some are revealing, some are massively big). For the rest, I do have some complains: firstly, I hated that there's NO vendor outside the villages or main cities, and if you're filled with trash to sell, you're basically forced to go back (either on foot, horse, or using a scroll if you're lucky) and sell your stuff. At least you can teleport to the nearest post. The enemies aren't hard to defeat...but if you aggro some by going nearby, 2 are the possibilities: 1) you get hit and you'll be in combat stance, with your weapons out, and your movement will be slower until you defeat your enemies or run away (hard to do). 2) you run away for a good amount of time..only to find them right behind you and forcing you to beat them go out of combat stance. This is SO annoying on so many levels because the enemies will almost never let you go and they can follow you almost for more than 1 minute (I even had fun running around with a mob following me around a fireplace...for five minutes straight! And he wouldn't leave!). At leas the enemies are slow, but sure are persistent. And for last...the quests. I read a lot of reviews mentioning that among their complains, was the the questing due to the lack of originality and boredom. I have one thing to say: it is true...but why only TERA gets the blame? I haven't played tons of mmorpgs, but in more than one I've had boring quests, yet nobody mentions that little factoid, and I'm talking of games like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Aion, The Secret World, and many other small games with the same kind of quests. Also in TERA the questing can be boring, but personally for the wrong reasons: my feeling was that most of these quests weren't that "great" and could have used more "challenges" too. Infact, the best quests were the group ones, because those big monsters were fun to fight and killing one takes a little more time than usual. Yet again, not the best quests ever, but I don't see much reasons of blaming the game while we have many other titles with the same issues that nobody ever mentions, and I'm the type of player who enjoys questing, so I may have a word about it!. And for last, the Free-to-Play limitations. I have bought the veteran status weeks before the free-to-play launch and with that purchase I got more bonuses (no char limit, more bank slot) so I can't judge the limitations properly. But here's what I think: the 2 character limitation IS a big flaw because of the variety of classes and races...but it was expected. However, the price for an additional slot is just too high at the moment and I wouldn't be surprised if people are annoyed by the price (about 30 euros for ONE slot). You have one bank slot as a f2p player...but the slot alone (about 72 spaces) is very big and I'm still using one (and I'm level 40). Also here however the price is high and not sure if worth it. Other limitations aren't very big so far (less "auction house" actions, a limited amount of gold sent, and few others), and that's surprising considering the game is actually big and, except for some other details, the game doesn't limit much else (unlike SWTOR). All in all, it's a good game and now that's a f2p with not too many limits, everyone can give it a shot and enjoy it, because I personally think the game deserved some more praise than it did. Expand

The customer support was bad, and not a lot of people played it, which was a problem.
What made the game amazing however, was the combat system, and the BAM (Big ass monster) battles. Every once in a while you'd come across a 5 man quest or dungeon, and that's where the game really began. The boss battles were very well designed, the combat was fun as a mage or warrior, and I loved the graphical style of the game. But eventually I stopped playing it since the community died out.

I created a priest and was shocked at how awesome he is. Playing the classic Korean androgynous high elf I can thrash my enemies with awesome combs and without having to repeat the normal rotations I am so used to in other MMO's. That is one of the large reasons why I prefer to play this game over many of my other MMO's. When I play Tera is fullfills my needs not only for an MMO, but for an action game in where my character placement and skill are actually important. I gave this game an 8 overall just because while the combat is great I feel that the quests could be a little more stimulating.
One point that I must highlight about this game as well is the graphics. If you were, or are a fan of Lineage 2 and Korean games you will absolutely love this game. the character models are absolutely gorgeous, so make sure not to solicit your party members while in an important dungeon.
In a very harsh MMO market, I believe that Tera will stay alive and well. The community seems good and the game brings to the market elements that no others contain. I for one see myself playing Tera for many more years to come and have faith that the additional endgame will fulfill its patrons. As the current dungeons are a very fun and unique experience.

Graphics are cutting-edge with acceptable performance on max settings, all kinds of combat is skill-based be it PVP or PvE. (which I have to say is a true first for any MMORPG I've played in my 6+ years of gaming) No but seriously, you can pick any class and go solo bosses. Sure, it will take some time and effort but you will be fully rewarded once you manage to kill it. This says a lot compared to Blizzard's HURPADERP HULK SMASH 200K AOE 100% HITCHANCE boss logic from boss humanoids that are often smaller than you. Fantasy or not, It gives a mush and bland aftertaste in your mouth along with the restriction of having at least 25 organized people to have a shot at killing said bosses and if you fail, people leave. And when people leave, more people leave. Random match-up you say? Why yes! More failing and more loot-ninjas for everybody! Granted, wow was a good game for It's time but now It's a sinking wood-rotten vessel that has more holes than a Swiss cheese. Obviously you can find this in Tera as well if you have the ingenious idea of running head first into an end-game dungeon as level 1 but Blizzard actually allows players to get one-hitted at their own level for "Challenge". Yeah, we sure see how that concept worked out in Diablo 3, didn't we, Jay?

TLDR: Tera is everything Wow tries to be but on a new, fresh engine/graphics platform.

It's reputation and daily system are worth the time spent doing them, as they are a great source of money. But getting the reputation rewards often takes a lot of time. It is not clear what is in the future for Tera at 60. But with games like GW2 coming out, Tera offers a way for players to play for free, using Chronoscrolls (similar to PLEX) and not have to spend all of their money to look good. As unlike other games, who might make you spend way more than $15 a month, to acquire good looking items. Things like remodeling equipment, dying, hats are all available in game for gold. Just as Chronoscrolls are purchasable by acquiring gold. By factoring that both Tera and GW2 are free to play when the system becomes available. I will have to tip my hat towards Tera for offering such cosmetic and vanity systems available in game through quests, achievements, and reputation. The reason for this being that in my opinion, TERA is a social MMO more than anything else. The combat is refreshing and works well, but as others have pointed out, the quests are quite generic and you will rarely find yourself doing quests other than go here and there and kill X amount of monsters and go back. This is fine by me, and there are some very challenging quests of this nature mixed in with some nicely made dungeons that don't require masses of wiping and strategy making to get through them. Saying that, the later dungeons are not easy tank 'n' spank affairs which will challenge even the hardiest MMOer................(c'mon metacritic let us use paragraphs)...............Where the game shines is in it's social and political areas. It can be very easy to join up in small groups to get quests done if you find yourself struggling against some of the harder quest mobs, and so far most people in the game seem to be quite friendly, which usually means come the inevitable 30 day exodus that most new MMO's initially suffer from, TERA might make it through that to be even more friendly amongst its player base. However, a well thought out political feature of the game where players can vote for people to be a "mayor-like" character for their entire server will likely add some shenanigans and back stabbing amongst the power crazy.........................Graphically the game is fairly astounding. I run on a fairly old machine with DDR2 memory(!) and a now ageing but well served Q6600 at 2.8ghz alongside an AMD 6850 card. I can run the game not far from the maximum settings and achieve a steady 60 frames a second. I do however have to use D3DOverrider (google it) as the vsync, even though forced via the AMD CCC application - does not do its job..............If you are an MMO fan looking for a group-centric, social but sometimes challenging MMO then you probably owe it to yourself to give it a try. Other major MMOs certainly took many years to get to where they are at right now. Even with the technological advances, expecting TERA to be released and to dominate right off the bat is overall unrealistic and delusional. Though again, the potential is there. Like a good wine, a good MMO needs time, effort and care to properly mature.

In my case the noticing of eventual bugs and things that could be fixed and added in the future just enhances that unique experience of being in a vanilla version of a very promising MMO.

I've been playing MMORPG for 5-6 years - started with vanilla WoW (when Temple of Ahn'Qiraj was still 40 ppl instance and required SOME skill at least). And so I gave a try to TERA. I should say I never played Korean MMORPG before and I was always afraid of constant grinding. However, I was surprised by quests in TERA. I felt like I returned to original WoW - sometimes quests are even challenging (solo fighting BAMs, for example). Some people complain about generic quests, but what else can you expect from MMORPG (korean, particularly)? In games like that, you always work as a delivery man, who, however, most of his time cleaning locations from evil monsters. Nothing special here. Next, I'd like to mention graphics and locations design. In 3 words, they are great! Very juicy colors, huge detailed environments, modern-looking characters models and, in general, relatively good engine optimization (I don't have top-notch PC, by the way).
What I really enjoy is combat system. Yes, I've never played korean games before, but I did play american and european MMORPG. Combat system in TERA feels so much different from what I've seen before. Maybe it is not perfect, I agree, but it is so much more dynamic and fresh after years in WoW that I am still under positive influence. For example, when you are fighting monster in WoW, he / she always faces you (unless he / she is under stun effect). No matter how fast you run around him, he'll always will be facing you. In TERA, after monster land his attack or use his spell, it will take time for him to recharge and turn back to you. While he's recharging, you can perform any tactical moves, run around and score a combo or two! That is why it feels so amazingly different than regular MMORPG.
So far, so good. What about bad point? I don't really like UI. To me, it feels a little sluggish and non-intuitive. Moreover, sometimes it just fails to do what you expect. It is not really a big deal, but sometimes it hard to understand certain features. All in all, I like this game so far. Though it was a very squeezed review, I mentioned points I really enjoyed and felt good about. Hope to see you in Tera!

The lore is interesting and its clear there's still a lot in store for the game. The release went well and there were server transfers offered at release. There was lag in major cities and I'm finding that with an AMD/ATI based system it can get jittery at times but once everything is loaded it runs at a smooth 40-60fps. I definitely recommend it. The questing is repetative, however the environment is great and as a casual gamer i don't feel the need to spend days a whole day playing tera. I log in for a couple of hours, knock out a lvl (leveling is pretty fast), log out and then after a day or so i feel like i want to play it again. Once you play tera for awhile normal mmos (and most games) will drive you nuts. Even the new ones. It was so difficult for me playing an upcoming MMO beta when i saw a boss charge up for a super attack and i couldn't block, dodge or teleport away from it. I just had to stand there and be killed. Tera will seem to lack customization at first and it will seem to lack content, however that gets introduced starting at lvl 20. It also seems kind of cookie cutter at times, but once you start to pvp you'll realize there really is no formula for success, just like in a basic fighting game, using the same moves over and over will get you killed. The combat is fantastic as with the gameplay, endgame dungeons are not to be taken lightly as mechanics in BT such as your screen slowly going black if you don't burn or kill the targets correctly, these are good mechanics that add challenge on the already existing game style an should be commended for it. The flaws in the game come from the MMO style of 'get game, get gear, patch, more gear' which is, personally, a deeply annoying trend. The story quests are great, as with the many cut scenes. You don't get better questing until later levels (50-60) which is a shame as the most common complaint, the quests 1-10 should really be designed to 'hook' your audience, but the combat somewhat makes up for that.

A very solid 9/10, I would give 8/10 but 9/10 is the new 8/10 because rating systems are **** Only a few games have ever been 10's in history and nothing of that quality has been produced this year.

Priest in this game is best played with others and there is no grouping penalty - quest objectives, gathering nodes can be looted by many people at once and questing in a group is really productive unlike other games which seem to emphasize solo leveling for maximum xp/hr.

Setting aside the 3 rules of New MMO's, you have to decide for yourself what will make you stay or leave. For me, TERA hits on almost every single note I could want from an MMO. True-Action combat that gives the feel of Mortal Kombat / Killer Instinct meets World of Warcraft; Graphics like nobodies business; Character creation is very diverse and unique, with a huge variety to choose from. I can keep going on and on about all the aspects of this game that I love. I think the best way to describe it would be Vanilla WoW or Vanilla EQ, or FFXI, these games all had very unique methods of game play, as soon as I started playing TERA I knew I was going to enjoy it. LvL 60 now and it's just amazing, I can't see myself getting bored of this game any time soon. Compare this game to SWTOR release, that game had a lot of story and game play, and most would argue that the 1-50 was pretty great! After that things went downhill because the game play just wasn't good enough to Sustain. TERA on the other hand, their Game play is SOOO good, they just lack in the quest, but the combat more than makes up for that. Look at WoW -- great game play and pvp, but poor questing system overall. This game is already great! It's going to get even better very soon, and to top it off, they didn't make 1892750189275098 servers, so that means each server has a GREAT population and GREAT community, makes questing and running instances and grouping for BAM's so easy. The graphics look nice, if a bit over the top. Some of the female 'armours' do look pretty whorish, but you can avoid those races if you think it's too much (Human females for example aren't nearly as bad as Elves). It runs fine on my 5-year old system (granted it's a good 5-year old system) with everything turned up pretty high, with major lag only coming from the capital city. Music is alright, though the voicework is forgettable. My only other major fantasy MMORPGs being WoW and WAR, I'll just compare the gameplay to those; combat is excellent and a lot more fun than WoW was. I played a squishy healer, and had no trouble soloing since I can actually avoid getting hit. What a novel concept. In groups I'm constantly running around repositioning myself to avoid boss attacks, while having to aim my spells instead of standing in one spot pushing heal whenever the tank gets low. I tried out a berserker as well (melee DPS) and was impressed that I had to think about combos, blocking, and dodging attacks instead of running a macro and taking a nap. Definitely the highlight of the game. Some people try to point out that most skills require you to stop moving for a moment, but if such wasn't the case ranged DPS would utterly dominate melee in PvP; besides are definitely a number of skills that you can fire off on the move. Quests are poorly done. Like WAR, the game at least doesn't waste your time and puts monsters and objectives right on your map for you. However quests were always your generic, 'kill X boars', 'gather Y plants' and repeated over and over. There were occasions were you got interesting 'hold the line for 10 minutes against hordes of enemies' type quests, but far, far too few. Quest XP is generally decent though. I didn't have to start doing extra grind beyond quests until the high 30s, and was even turning down quests before that as there were actually too many. Grind in general has been far less than I experienced in WoW and WAR. I generally only have time to play 2, maybe 3 hours a day and was at level 30 in a week, while that took me about 3 weeks back when I played WoW. One of game's big questing points are the BAMs, which are basically mini-bosses in the main questing areas. They are major fights that are hard to solo. You can skip them entirely, but if you want to see all the content you're going to have to get over it and group up once in a while. There are several instances, usually a new one every 10 levels or so. They start off very easy (did the first with 3 party members, that didn't even have a proper tank), but eventually you'll have to start being smart and taking your time through them if you don't want to wipe. Getting groups for them wasn't too bad, though there's definitely a tank shortage among players. PvP is very limited right now, but battlegrounds have been promised in the next major content patch. I didn't roll PvP server, so I can't fairly review the Guild vs Guild combat in this review. Finally, the races and class options were generally okay. Races are mainly cosmetic, with the racial advantages being fairly moot past the beginner areas. Classes had a variety of melee and ranged DPS, two healers/support classes and one tank. The one tank is the main problem with grouping right now, but there are plans to make the Warrior into a more viable (it's pretty flaky right now) evasion tank to ease the problems with getting a tank for instances and BAMs. There were no bugs or crashes I experienced, and no major lag outside of the capital city. All in all, I'm enjoying Tera so far. Will I play it for years to come? Unlikely, but some people seem to think MMOs need to last as long as WoW did; but if I get my fun out of it for a few months and move on that's fine with me. I'm getting my money's worth for now. They move around, randomly change directions, have multiple move sets, can easily wipe your party if you make a mistake. All this makes the game very rewarding. Yes the quests are very generic, they haven't really changed from what MMOs have been doing for the past 10 years. It is essentially the same as what every other game does, WoW, Everquest, etc. SWTOR is pretty much the only game with a better quest system.

If you want to play a MMO which rewards skill based play, doesn't involve tab targeting and forces you to actually aim and time your moves, then this is the game for you. By far the best MMO I have ever played. Honestly, it's one of the best GAMES I have ever played. The combat, visuals, art style, classes, and races are incredible. Ignore the GW2 fan-trolls. You owe it to yourself to pick this game up!

Action combat makes all the difference. Absolutely fantastic MMO! Fairly standard questing system, but it's much more fun when you have to aim and dodge and block etc. Visually stunning and runs well on most systems. This was the first time a MMO actually got my attention. Mainly due to the style and what i heard about the combat system. I truly love this game and feel that it's worth the subscription fee which I never thought I'd be saying. Lots of helpful players online right now and of course the angry ones too. Controls are flawless, graphics are amazing, and after a while playing only had it freeze on me once. Highly recommend this. Expand

Love this MMO. Great high fantasy fun with an incredibly well done dynamic combat system. It's such a nice change of pace to play such an action oriented MMO. The visuals run on UE3 and look great. Very bright, colorful, nice looking textures. Quests so far are pretty standard but the overall package is excellently done. Really polished game as well.

Very cute, fun, and just plain enjoyable MMO. What I love most about it is the massive open world. Too many MMO games these days have small areas covered with loading screen after loading screen but Tera has two massive continents to explore just like WoW had. I especially like the color customization but wish the make up didn't come in bundles and you can customize lipstick, etc. seperately :>

Even on the PVP servers there's plenty of channels if you want to avoid being taken out while fighting mobs. If you've been waiting for Guild Wars II then this should be a great surprise and who knows if Guild Wars 2 doesn't live up to the hype you might just end up staying. It may not offer massive changes to the MMORPG formula but is that really what everyone wants? Expand

Great game! If you are looking for some fresh MMO this is worth picking up, just remember though..it is still an MMO. You will still quest and grind no matter what MMO you are in. Combat is engaging and challenging, it reminds me of vanilla wow when bosses used to hurt, healing was challenging, tanking took attention. I currently am level 34 priest and im loving it. Unfortunately questing is linear so no matter how many alts i make there is only one way to go. Im sure there are quest hubs i missed/skipped however the main story will be repeated on any alts i make which is a small disappointment. Is it a wow killer? questionable...given time wow will kill itself however i think this game is definitely worth a pick up. Expand

Let me start off by saying this is a subjective review. I don't believe in objective reviews for the sole fact that you introduce what I like to consider the "godlike" element, in that you expect way too much from the game, and that most people who would like to think they're objective are anything but. I don't believe in objective reviews for the sole fact that you introduce what I like to consider the "godlike" element, in that you expect way too much from the game, and that most people who would like to think they're objective are anything but. I'm not going to fool myself and I'm going to look at everything in respect to other MMO's on the market.

    Gameplay:

Looking at everything from the big picture, this is your standard MMO experience. Your goal is to get to the endgame, and you do this by killing things and questing.

    Questing and Story:

The questing in this game is one of its shortcomings. It's all pretty much the generic, "fetch this" or "kill this" kind of thing. If you're expecting the quests themselves to be new or exciting, for the most part you're going to be disappointed.

If you actually play the game for its lore and take that into consideration, the quests do become somewhat more engrossing because the lore is high quality and coherent. They make you feel like you're actually making an impact to the world, even if you are doing essentially the same thing over and over. The lore helps break the monotony if you pay attention to it.

    Interface:

The interface is quite different from your standard MMO due to the fact that the combat is action-based. Simply put, there are two interface modes. In your standard combat and running around mode, the mouse moves your field of vision and affects where you aim your abilities. In the second mode, you have an onscreen cursor to do things such as open menus and move inventory items around.

There is somewhat of a learning curve to the interface, but it's fairly intuitive once you get used to it. Switching between the two interface modes is quite simple; all you have to do is hit "Alt" or "Esc". In fact, they made the transition even more user-friendly as certain queues or actions will automatically enable one of the two interface modes. For instance, if you move in any direction, the combat-mode will be enabled, while talking to a quest giver will enable the interface-interaction mode.

    Combat:

This is where the game absolutely shines. Other MMO's have your standard tab-targeting system where you stand still and cast abilities with no real consequence for not moving at all. In TERA, the combat is far more action-oriented. While I hesitate to say it's revolutionary, it's a significant improvement over the standard MMO system.

Each class has abilities that either mitigate damage or allow you to avoid it completely when you use them at the right time during combat. If you're really keen, you can even dodge a lot of things by running to the side or backwards at the perfect time. The game rewards you for doing this, by allowing you to pretty much eliminate any downtime if you're skilled enough with your dodging or mitigation.

Another aspect of the action-oriented combat where this game improves upon other MMO's is its combo system. Your abilities have the potential to chain together and create awesome effects, as well as lower their channeling times. The system is very fluid and natural once you get used to it, and is a lot more engaging than simply hitting your skills based on a cooldown-only system.

An unfortunate aspect of the combat is that the animations are locked, meaning once you start casting an ability you can't do anything else until the animation is finished. A non-locked system would be quite easy to exploit though, so it's not all bad in this regard.

    Sound & Music:

The sound and music in this game are very solid and what you would expect from a Fantasy MMO. I haven't come across any music yet that has made me say "holy crap this is EPIC!", but the music is definitely engaging and helps you immerse yourself in the world.

    Visuals:

This game looks amazing. There's not a whole lot else to say about it. The world was designed well, and is visually striking. It is probably the best looking MMO to date.

    Overall:

This has been the most enjoyable MMO experience I have had in a very long time, and TERA comes highly recommended from me. A must play for any MMO buff!

Tera sure makes promise on the "true action combat" that it so advertises, but that change alone to the MMORPG formula isn't enough to flip the genre on its head, especially when you've forgotten about other aspects of it.

That being said, Tera is in surprisingly good shape for a game so early in its life cycle. The journey to level cap is mostly entertaining, endgame content is available, and the core gameplay elements are solid.

Action-oriented combat and interesting graphics aren't enough to overcome what is overall a rather bland experience.
