This game is absolute gold. I feel that the only problem with it is that sometimes with their updates to the specific classes you get a bit of a power shift in classes that takes a while to balance out. Honestly, though, you'll still have loads of fun even while getting slaughtered.

I first played Team Fortress 2 on the Playstation 3 version, while trying out the Orange Box. I loved it even more than the Playstation 3 version. I've been reading people's reviews, and this last part of my message is for the guys that give it a red rating. First, for whoever complains about the lack of interest, go and make your own custom maps for the game. Make it how YOU wanted the maps to turn out like, and find out how difficult it is to create a great map. Secondly, for the people complaining about the Medic's achievement pack, what is there to complain about? 39 achievement only for the best of players willing to show off, and three shiny new weapons. (This applies to the Pyro update, and in 2 or 3 days, the Heavy update.) Third, for people who don't appreciate the graphics, what did you expect? Something boring and usual? Also, something else I would like to add. If you think this game fails, YOU fail. Expand

Team Fortress 2 is Truly a masterpiece. Each map has a fully elaborate environment with a cartoonish feel. Each character/class has a recognizable personality that truly defines the game. Each new update brings more fun to the game, from unlockable weapons to new game modes and maps. In my opinion, Team Fortress 2 is one of the greatest First Person Shooter(FPS) class based game of all time.

This is the best FPS I've played in a while. Only problem is the limited number of maps if you don't have it for PC. If you have it for the PC though, you're doing great. Seriously, 9 classes, no under or overpowered ones. Leave it to Valve to find a way to do that.

Sure, the Heavy is very powerful, but he is very slow and he can very easily get killed by a Sniper or a Spy. And the Spy, he can disguise himself as an opposite team member and backstab and destroy all of the Engineer's mechanisms, but attacking once will take off the disguise, it does take a while for the disguise to kick in and Pyros can easily set you alight and you will get suspicious. And the Scout being underpowered, he can move very fast, jump high and he can capture points twice as fast as anyone else.

Now back to the review. It's light-hearted, tons of fun, hysterical and balanced, but what about the characters themselves? The characters personalities reflect on their fighting style. The Scout is a fast talking, slang using American teenager or early twenties man. You'd imagine him to be fast and attack fast. Yep. The Sniper's a laid-back, friendly Aussie. He pays respect to the enemy's sacrifice and his fighting style is back-against-the-wall and shoot the weak spots away from the actual fighting. The Heavy is a dim-witted strong and heavy Russian guy. His talking is very loud and so is his shouting. He's big, heavy, powerful and really slow. There's also ones like the sneaky, sly ladies' man, a mystery guy, a stereotypical man from Texas over in the USA and many more. Weak points: The multiplayer hardly works where I come from and there's weird bugs and crashes, like every character spontaneously stops moving and stands still, to the weapons being automatically firing all the time and never stopping and finding a game anywhere else but the USA I bet is hard. But don't let that stop you playing against the CPU. In my case, the CPU is much better than playing Multi, because no one is overpowered and they are quite tough to beat: the CPU actually works as a team. All in all, this game is absolutely great. Get it and expect to sink in endless hours.

Alot has been removed from the 1st game, and sadly alot of the things that were fun.

Alot of maps and modes were removed, same with a class or two.
There's not a big variety in the maps, A desert, and Industial Desert, Or an Industrial Western Desert.

So, alot has been cut out, but it's still polished so much my eyes burst because of how shiny it is.

Since its release, TF2, has been very unique game that provides an unique multiclass FPS experience. In October 2007, TF2 is a game with great, balanced gameplay, refreshing and graphically stunning artstyle, rich class(character), a variety of gamemodes, superior voice acting and most importantly, constant update and support from valve. In March 2011, while, 3 years sinces the release of TF2, much has been added, most notably thousands of maps from the community, new gamemodes, new weapon unlocks, cosmetic customizations, Meet the Team videos, and much more. Valve has put in great effort to support this game throughout the years, and as a loyal fan, i enjoyed it quite alot. Unlike COD series, TF2 remains a FPS that focuses on player enjoyment and "fun" instead of frags. However, it has been revealed that TF2 is a playerbase experiment from valve(conspiracy lol). Since september 2010, and the introduction of Mann Co Store (a shop where you can spend real money to buy items, like rpg), TF2 has been going on a decline. Much of its former glory as a FPS was lost, and in place, we now have a markeplace of trading/selling virtual items in game. While some may argue that this is a positive change for TF2 as it brought in new players, i find it hard to agree with those views. Performance issues begin to arise as valve ceases to stop optimizing the game. Gameplay updates are haulted, as cosmetic items are being added constantly. Weapons, while previously balanced, aren't anymore with the introduction of newer once that are difficult to obtain through either crafting or dropping, giving advantage to those who buy them in the Store. TF2's artstyle has been ruined by the addition of new weapons and cosmetic items as well. The once amazing spy-tech, mysterious atmosphere has vanished once lime green and neon pink paint are splashed upon the characters. Regrettably, i have stopped playing since early january this year, with the hope that valve will wake up and put TF2 right back on track. I know this game is old, and that further serious support from the developer is highly unlikely, one can still have faith in valve because they have never disappointed me yet. (this letdown doesn't count). TLDR:
Even with the recent negative changes to TF2, i still highly recommend for those who want to try it out. At $20 it is a huge deal and you will be suprised by how much depth the game has to offer. At release up to august 2010, i give TF2 a score of 96/100. At present, i will score it at 81/100.

Some people said it ruined the game already, i thought its cool, but the way they implemented it, not neccesary. To obtain those new weapons you had to do achievements, and THIS is what ruined the game, it made people farm achievements to get new weapons instead of playing it as supposed. So the game turned into a giant grind-fest. Later they introduced drop system to avoid the farming, but that made it even worse. Now people would just "idle" instead of farming, they just logged in and AFK all night long, then after hours they get bunch of items, for nothing, for just being logged in. Thats just a lame and stupid design. Now they introduced something even worse... a real money shop where you can just buy the items. And that was it for me. Now half of the servers are made for either achievement grind, idling or trading. Sad how you can ruin a great game by implementing such fun-killing concepts. Expand

This is by far the BEST GAME EVER. Not only does it combine fast paced shooting and fun maps, but it adds a major twist of cartoony humor, which most other first person shooters lack. This game is deffinetly the most creative online shooter (like every valve game) and it never gets old with valves constant update. Also, you can buy hats.

Every morning I get up, play ELDER SCROLLS: IV OBLIVION, and after 4 hours of that, I hop on my PC and give TF2 an hour play before I resume life like a human. The Scout can run like no other class, double jump, and drink assorted soda's. The Soldier uses a rocket launcher to blast enemies apart in a bloody, gory mess. The Pyro can light enemies on fire with his flamethrower or flare gun. The Heavy can spin his minigun and deal massive damage, and so on. Now that it's FREE TO PLAY* everyone owns it, and if you don't, you need it. Really. *Really. Get it off Steam or www.tf2freetoplay.com!

I would have given this game a 10 around when it was first released, yet to be raped by valve's money grubbing schemes. Each of the classes in this game had a specific role, with a specific arsenal of weapons. That made them special and gave them each a purpose in the game. Around when the hats, microtransactions, trading, and free-to-play came, it all went to hell. I like the fact that valve is constantly updating the game, but they're doing it wrong. The introduction of dozens of new weapons simply blurs the lines between the distinctive abilities of each of the classes. Heavies that run fast? Snipers that are impervious to backstabs? Spies that can headshot? Medics with arrows? (etc.) These ridiculous new abilities makes each of the classes less special. Furthermore, I was appalled when valve decided to slap their customers in the face by suddenly making this game free-to-play. They advertise it as a good thing. But valve's greed is easily uncovered. The free to play aspect of this game allows more people to be exposed to the tf2 microtransactions market, making valve even more money in expense of the people that already bought this game. Now this game is filled with angry and unskilled grade-schoolers that don't need their mom's credit card to buy and play this game. The overall experience of teamwork and ingame fellowship is ruined. Players with their newly-bought "overpowered" weapons think they are a one-man army, with no need for team support. I also really hate all these stupid accessories people put on their characters. It makes the game look like a goofy social avatar game rather than a competitive team-based game. More importantly, people's goals are changed to get more hats and items. I really miss the experience with this game when it first came out. Everybody worked together, there were no teams full of snipers and engineers. People understood what this game was about. I notice valve is ruining a lot of things lately. l4d2? cs:go? portal 2 is an exception. Nevertheless, I have lost all respect for valve and I no longer support them. Expand

Valve has done a fantastic job constantly updating the game, and still stand as the only Free to Play game done right. I've never bought a single item in the game and yet I'm swimming in hats and weapons. The recent introduction of Mann Vs. Machine, a co-op gamemode, was pretty much a stroke of genius on Valve's part. Despite a few balancing issues, It fits so seamlessly into the game, it almost feels like Valve had intended it from the beginning. Each class has their own distinctive role and style of play,. That fact along with custom maps add the possibility of sinking hundreds of hours into this gamemode alone. If TF2 had a price tag, it would be known as the gaming bargain of a lifetime. Without a price tag, it is the most foolish mistake any FPS fan could make to pass on. I can't see how anybody could pick up TF2 and not have at least a bit of fun. Heavy throws down his Sandvich to replenish one of his teammates health, while Sniper extinguishes flames with his Jarate (helps see those spies too.)-- the Scout having the same job if the user has mad milk equipped. Team Fortress is like a diamond which came out of mud, from the depths of the FPS world came a balanced, deep and funny game, a game which is the denial of every skill based game filled with leet players calling you noob, like COD or CS.
It's like a cooperative chess, in the sense that no class is perfect in itself, always having disadvantages, depending on others and needing to fulfill a specific role in the team. Add to this a great visual design resembling the 70's and 60's- believe me, I work as a graphic designer- great typhography, great conceptual design, a whole culture, context and world behind the characters, a long learning curve... And you have endless hours of fun. The community of Team Fortress is alive and very participative in creating content.
The only problem is that Team Fortress is haunted by it's FPS context and past, so when you enter a game and see that your team is made of 4 snipers and 3 spies, you know you are doomed, and you can image a 15 years old kid, thinking the games is all about aiming, being sneaky, or being the "best player", while your team is being raped over and over again. I sincerely propose that Valve one day cap the numbers of certain classes in teams or that classes are assigned randomly to players.

It is now 6 years since its release, and it is still an excellent game that is better than 99% of shooters.

Valve did an amazing job with the classes, the game modes, and the balance between them. If you get bored of one class, guess what, you have many more to play instead. Every class feels unique and fun. Also, there is nothing quite like getting Ubered as a heavy and mowing down 10 enemies, or getting a Kritzkrieg with a demo on a map with tight hallways.

The graphical style is also incredibly unique and so good that it looks awesome even now in 2014. Really, I have nothing negative to say about TF2. I haven't been playing it in a while but I know it still has an awesome community, and if I ever feel like playing, there are a couple people on my Steam friends list that were there from the beginning and still playing.

This game can run on a surprisingly large range of computer types, making it very accessable. As a result, there are many servers to run on, and this game is addicting. The humor style is great, the fanbase/community is great, and the entire game is just a joy to play no matter how much you suck at it.

The few complaints with it i have are mainly server problems that still continue to keep me from playing this game sometimes, and Spies. I hate Spies. And yet i cant get mad because spies are difficult to play, and if you got good with them congrats cause i suck at playing spy.

I don't know why people love this game, it's the worst game developed by Valve. It's a generic shooter where you have to jump here and there and nothing more. You have good customization options, but it doesn't worth. The graphics are good, but it can be better (the effects are very standard). It's a good game? Yes, and its free, but it is not a great game like everyone says.

While in Counter-Strike (not to detract from it, it's still a good game) it's easy to solo a team, trying to go alone in this game will end with your ragequit. I also like that it makes it so that you want to pay money rather than grudgingly do it by giving some legitimate benefits (Not hats).

Really, my main complaint with the game is not with Valve, Steam, or the developers: It's with the community. The reigning kings of obnoxious fanbases remains the Homestuck community, but TF2 puts up a good fight. One of the downsides to the F2P model is that it allows EVERYONE (that has a computer that meets system requirements, that is) can play, leading to many situations where you'll be surrounded by Bronies, Furries, children, and the obnoxious "PC Master Race" group. Unlike some other games (Sonic), the community hasn't destroyed the game yet, but be wary. 8/10. A solid experience at the low price of free.

The most fun I have ever had in a online game! No matter what game that I decide to buy on Steam or retail I consistently have to keep asking myself the question "Will I play this more than TF2?" and from playing the game for well over 2.5k hours I can say beyond the shadow of a doubt that TF2 is one of my favorite games to date.

Okay enough praise for the game and time for a bit of history, with the original Team Fortress being launched as a mod for another classic fps game Quake which was released in the year of 1996 and it took a new turn on the fps genre. With the game predominately focusing on team work rather than a "one many army" tactic it had provided enough balance in a game that allowed for moderately skilled teams to effectively counter or defeat another team which focused on 1 or 2 highly skilled players.

Fast forward to Oct 9th of 2007 and you have the release of Team Fortress 2 a stunning edition to the games series and which provided a better display of what the source engine was capable of. Team Fortress 2 featured a selection of nine different classes with different styles of play. Keeping to the traditional Quake death match styled game play teams would be pitted against one another over capture points, capture the flag scenarios, and attack defend scenarios which would focus on either control points or payload matches which focused on one team pushing a giant bomb to the enemy teams base.
With the games high octane take on team structure and intense death match game play the competitive scene and popularity of TF2 rose quickly through the ranks.

Seven years later and TF2 is still holding the rank of 3rd most popular game on steam to date right behind Counter-Strike Global Offensive and Dota 2, this is unheard of in any competitive game or fps to date. TF2 is still being updated with new modes, maps, weapons and overall content as well as trailers or promo's for the games advertising and reveling new character stories and events made by Valve themselves as well as the addition of the Steam Workshop which gives a ton of creative aspects to TF2 from both a players stand point and anyone who's looking to get into modding and doing creative things for games in general.

Con's: No game is perfect in either story or gameplay and TF2 is no exception, with the games random crit rate being one of these issues. Players can randomly do 3k damage in a sudden burst often to the dismay of would be attack and much delight of the would be victim/survivor. With the addition of the Kritzkreig medics and build Krtiz and choose which player to give the Kritz too providing for a few moments of 100% crit damage, this allows the game to be more balanced by working for the critical damage instead of randomly being rewarded for it.

Another issue would be ironically certain objects within the games maps specifically the corners of objects, Some of the games object corners can completely stop momentum and completely immobilize a player trying to make an escape.

Aside from these issues nothing really breaks the game and even with these issues the game is still 100% enjoyable and well worth any amount of time spent playing, with a friendly community of both new and highly skilled players the games over all experience is well worth any avid or new gamer's time!

Team Fortress 2 was a PC game released in 2007. It was originally a pay-to-play game, but was made free-to-play later in it’s lifespan. It was also released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but these versions are obsolete. It has received many updates over the last 9 years, and has contended with the likes of Overwatch.
Team Fortress 2 is a unique take on a first-person shooter. Unlike the majority of shooting games, Team Fortress 2 does not try to be realistic. Instead, it is very stylised and colourful. The weapons and characters all have a distinct shape, allowing you to clearly identify any class from great distance.
The game is based around two teams, who fight over different objectives. The game itself has a backstory; however this isn’t apparent in game. Every game is a battle between RED (Reliable Excavation Demolition) and BLU (Builders League United). The colours of red and blue are well chosen, so that the two teams are very easy to distinguish. This is very important in-game, as it makes it a lot easier to identify who is friend and foe.

All of the game’s classes are very unique. The characters themselves are designed to be distinguishable between one another, even as a colourless silhouette. This is done to ensure that the player can make a decision about their course of action, without having to get a close up view of their opponent. The shapes of the characters have implications about the combat ability of a class, allowing newer players to pick and choose who to fight.

The characters have unique personalities. Each class talks about their environment as the games go on, commenting on objectives or kills. These comments are often humorous, and can give players an idea of who is coming around a corner, allowing them time to prepare for an assault.

The game is highly customisable. In fact, it is a frequent joke amongst players that Team Fortress 2 is not a ‘First-Person Shooter’, but instead a ‘Hat Simulator’. Players may equip different items known as ‘cosmetics’. These, as the names suggest, have no effect on gameplay, but make each player feel unique. Each class has their own set of cosmetics, which may be bought or traded for. A small number of cosmetics are given away to players for completing certain achievements. However, since a lot of players will have these cosmetics, people will usually strive to obtain more unique items.

Despite the obvious differences, Team Fortress 2 is just like other first-person shooters in a few aspects. It has similar weapons, such as rocket launchers and sniper rifles, and objectives to complete. These allow players familiar with first-person shooters to enjoy the game without having to immediately adapt to new and unique weapons.

The game consists of nine characters, known as ‘classes’. Classes come in three categories; offense, defense, and support. Offensive classes are made to deal large amounts of damage. Defensive classes are generally classes who do best at defending the objective. Support classes can help deal damage from afar, pick off important targets, or heal friendly players.
The class groups help keep the game balanced, and to give a team a way to decide which classes are needed in certain situations. For example, a team with a lot of offensive classes but no support classes is likely to suffer against a team with support classes, as the other team could have a method of healing, a person doing damage from afar, or someone to take down the larger classes in one hit.
Despite certain classes having advantages over others, each class can be useful to a game. For example, a Scout, who has only 125 health points, can take down a Heavy with up to 350 health points, by taking advantage of the Scout’s unique attributes, such as his agility. The Heavy, on the other hand, is slow, and must track fast enemies accurately using his minigun.

Team Fortress 2 has effective methods of giving visual feedback to the player. The main way that visual feedback is used is the red marker used to indicate the direction from where a player is getting hit. This is extremely useful, not only for determining the location of an attacker, but also to determine the magnitude of the damage done. The game also has visual feedback in the form of a useful GUI. This GUI gives the player all sorts of information about the current match, and also informs you of your health, ammunition, and player deaths. Using these different facts can give a player an idea of where to be at times of need.
The game also has a lot of audial feedback in the form of hit sounds, something fairly unique to Team Fortress 2. Hit sounds are used as indication of successful shots, and are surprisingly informative. The pitch of the hit sound varies depending on the damage done. This information can be used to judge whether you have done significant damage to other players, and can decide your response. Other aspects of audial feedback are screaming players, and other sounds that can indicate danger or the capturing of an objective.

Whilst the game itself is a blast to play, it is not without flaws. One of the largest flaws in the game is the lack of team balance. A team can often stray from teamwork, leading to uncoordinated efforts to capture an objective. Often, several players will play as the same class, such as Snipers. This often leads to an oversaturation of that type of player, and a lack of necessary support. One of the most infamous examples of Team Fortress 2’s balance was the autobalance feature. The autobalance feature aimed to balance teams by ensuring that each team has the same amount of players. Recently, Valve decided to do away with this feature, which has lead to unbalanced games, often with a few players facing a full team.
Updates are few and far between, with most updates being a large disappointment for the community. Announced updates can take years to actually be implemented, and new gameplay elements are not often added, which can sometimes make the game seem stale. Most updates only add a small amount of cosmetics or ‘beta’ maps, which are never actually finished. Cactus Canyon, for example, has been in beta for over 2 years, with no word of a full release. The item servers are also frequently down, leading to a large amount of frustration.
Despite my love for this game, the recent ‘Meet Your Match’ update has taken away a great deal of the fun for me. The forced matchmaking in this update can often take up to 10 minutes. As aforementioned, the ‘autobalance’ feature is now long gone, which initially met with approval from the community. However, after months of games without autobalance, people have stopped appreciating the removal of the system.
The game also has a whole host of performance issues, making it hard to recommend to someone without a decent computer. The main problem with Team Fortress 2 is Valve’s refusal to port the game to their new engine, Source 2. This is understandable, as the development team is very small, but unfortunately, it’s absolutely necessary. As it stands, Team Fortress 2 can only use 2 cores of your processor, limiting performance drastically. The updates also seem to make the problem worse, with every addition to the game causing more and more lag. Even someone with a powerful computer would have trouble keeping Team Fortress 2 at a steady framerate.

Yet another issue with the game is the fact that a player is generally judged by their appearance. Players with more expensive items are nearly always regarded as better than someone with less expensive items. This can lead to bullying, and neglect of players who have not played for as long.
Overall, TF2 is a fairly solid experience, and is probably the best Free-to-Play game around. Unfortunately, with the recent updates, and incredible drops in performance, I find it hard to recommend to anyone. Even I have stopped playing it recently, as the drops in framerate are infuriating, often occurring at vital moments. I would appreciate the game much more, if Valve would actually show some courtesy for the game.
