One of the first games that I had finished in a long time. The open world is very nice, along with the game play mechanics. I would recommend this game to anyone who doesn't have a major fear of water.

    tl;dr:
Beautiful game, incredible, gripping story - I strongly recommend it!

You watch a small cutscene laying the plot for the story, it drops you straight into action, you wake up in a burning escape pod, death is imminent but you struggle free from the seat and extinguish the fires. You open the hatch and observe the seemingly infinite horizons of water, next to the giant spacecraft which has seeming disturbed this environment's rest.

You dive into the blue abyss to discover the friendly shoals and the schools of fish brushing past you. It looks beautiful.

    PROS:

In turns of the game's graphical elements, it really sticks out in a great way, mostly due to lighting effects. I am honestly intrigued as to what it would look like with RTX Ray-Tracing because I'm sure it would look very similar to this. The deeper you go, the darker it gets, when "night falls" the red rays of the nearby planet light up the night sky.

The game relies largely on exploration, this puts the player out of their comfort zone and even sometimes introduces some horror aspects which are executed amazingly, I was on the edge of the seat for some of the deeper zones. This may not be for everyone but it worked for me even when I didn't know horror was involved, I personally loved the "heat of the moment" action.

In terms of gameplay, the controls worked very well with them being preconfigured well without me needing to change much, but when I needed to, the menu of which to manage them was very easy to use.

Creating and building a base underwater allows players to also let their creativity shine, whilst it also balances rewards with risks and requirements, such as reinforced walls to make sure integrity is up, so your base doesn't flood under pressure, as well as the need for power to keep the lights on.

Another thing this game absolutely nails is vehicles, Subnauitica, in total, offers 4. They remain balanced and yet they still come with risks and rewards, with things like vehicle health. These vehicles can be upgraded with craft able upgrades if you so wish to spend valuable resources on them.

The game's story is one of the highlights for me, leaving you in awe in some places, with you scratching your head in others, the game's lore can be very interesting at times, not delving too deep to the point where you overthink things but still allowing you to let your imagination and theories run wild as you progress in the game.

    CONS:

Bugs - I experienced a bug which got me stuck in a wall thanks to the prawn suit in a stage late in the game, in turn I had to learn console commands and I actually had to god into noclip mode to save my game before I fell into the void.

Lack of multiplayer features - when I picked this game up I expected multiplayer features but it lacked it which was a real bummer for me and my friends. However, due to the game's wonderful community, developers have been working on multiplayer options for Subnautica, thank god!

    Conclusion:

In conclusion I feel that the pros outweigh the cons massively, so I have to recommend picking this game up. The price for it is an absolute STEAL.

Suffice to say that the game has some incredible moments, and should be experienced by anyone who appreciates great atmosphere and storytelling.

The game is terrifying at times. It's not the typical type of fear in horror games, it's more the feeling that you could be caught anytime and killed any second, while giving you the feeling that you escaped by the skin of your teeth. It's really something that must be experienced, and it's one of many great sensations the game gives you.

The game has some niggles, the biggest of which is the game's barriers in certain spots which can glitch out and trap you forever. It's not a huge issue, but worth mentioning. The game also has some performance hiccups, especially if you go very deep, but it's hardly a deal breaker.

If you have ever enjoyed a survival game in your life, play Subnautica. If you enjoy horror games or games with scary atmospheres, play Subnautica. This game is far from perfect, but it's a very special and unique experience, one I wish I could have again. One of the best games of the decade.

Best open-world I have played in about a year. And best indie title for almost a decade! Great atmosphere, great graphics, attention to detail. Amazing what this little studio did with a small budget, compared to "the big guys". They made a competitive shooter called "Natural Selection 2" as well - be sure to check it out if you like fast-paced FPS action. :-)

This game is one of the iconic steam games in my opinion. Atmosphere in Sub Nautica is incredible and terrifying. This game has major technical issues however that ruined my first playthrough of this game. Another issue is the lack of direction in this game. I would recommend using a guide if you want to play this game.

It's a very good game, but it's very poorly optimized. I played it on my PC and XBOX, on both, when I set up my base and look at it, the game hits 22 fps on PC and 15 fps on series x. Also, the game has a lot of loading popups. And I think the story could be easier to understand, not necessarily needing to read and look for the PDA's

On top of this, your character never talks, which really makes you feel like you are that character. Not that you control a character with its own conscience. After playing for a while, you start to realize that you really have to figure out everything yourself. And because the underwater world and its mystery is so captivating, you can easily put up with long hours of exploration to seek out every place and piece of information there is to find. To top it all off Subnautica is incredibly scary. I can say with certainty that Subnautica is going to introduce you to multiple fears you didn't know you had. They play right into those fears by adding fog, big wrecks, big bodies of water, darkness, disturbing looking biomes and worst of all alien sea monsters. Not to forget the incredible sound design by Simon Chylinski which builds up the tension from 0 to 100 real quick. After a certain point, Subnautica becomes a battle between your curiosity and your fear of the unknown. Overcoming that fear time after time was a great experience. There is honestly so much more to say about this game, but you really just have to experience it yourself. Expand

Had to solve this via wiki Coordinates several times. The concept of discovering and scanning tech and thus upgrading your capabilities is great until you find yourself missing crucial gear to advance and can't find the sometimes very scattered and extremely hard to find pieces. Feels like searching for needles in a haystack since you are literally combing the ocean floor for anything you missed. Again - the game could make use of much more direction the way it does in the beginning with radio messages. Graphically it's a great game, looks nice on max settings, the water and sunset, the little water drops, everything looks good. The draw distance however is pretty lackluster and as of finishing the game there were massive texture and terrain pop ins. I still enjoyed it greatly despite it flaws, however without patience and wiki consultance I don't think I'd ever been able to finish this game. Expand

The game falls short in some graphical areas and some parts of the mid game are a bit slow/stale, where the story progression slows down.

    Gameplay: 8/10
    Graphics: 7/10
    Music/Sound: 9/10
    Uniqueness: 9/10
    Monetization: 9/10

Gameplay - The diving aspect is executed very well. You really feel like you're diving. Learning new recipes for items you can create, along with building your base, is also very fun. There is always something new you're looking forward to creating. While looking for those materials, you often find another blueprint. It keeps you engaged and always saying "I'll just do this before logging off...". The story is good, but not amazing. The only bad thing I can really say about the gameplay is that it gets a bit repetitive in the mid game, where there is a bit of a slow down in the story progression. I feel that the developers could have added a bit more here to keep the gameplay flowing.

Graphics - Certain graphical aspects are really good! These I would rate 8 or 9 out of 10. The best of these are the water effects, and the biomes. The water looks great, especially when underneath and there are sunrays bursting through the water. It's brilliant and really sells the feeling that you are diving. The biomes are beautiful, and each feels very distinct. The colors are gorgeous, and the graphics of the different plants and fish you see in different biomes are lovely. Where the graphics are let down most is pop-ins. It's really immersion breaking and very frequent. Whenever you are travelling you will see it everywhere. There is no option to increase draw distance. There are a few other areas where the graphics could be better, such as the planet in the distance, which looks almost like a cardboard pop-in and at times doesn't even seem like it's in the distance.

Music/Sound - Brilliant. It really sells the feeling that you are diving into an unknown area. Each biome has different music, matching the vibe of that biome. There are some biomes where the music really gets your adrenalin pumping. The sound effects are great too, even the little things such as guggling down some water. Excellent job by the sound team, and I think sound is a very underrated aspect of a game.

Uniqueness - There is no other game like it. If you want to feel like a diver and want to explore and underwater world then pick this game up right now. It would get a 10, however it does re-use many survival game aspects, so I can't call it a completely unique game. If you have played many survival games, you will probably find the survival aspect boring. But the underwater exploration is just simply fantastic and you will not find it anywhere else.

Monetization - Excellent. You pay for the game once. You own the game forever. There are no macroscamsactions, lootboxes, or any of that garbage. It didn't get a 10 because to get a 10 you have to be incredibly good value, and the game is still in that £20-£30 bracket. While absolutely worth it, I have seen on occasion some simialr quality level games at under £10. And these are the ones that I would give a 10 to. The devs have also offered some DLC, but they have put effort into it, and it is standalone to Subnautica, so you don't need the DLC. Think of that as a different game! Overall, Subnautica is absolutely worth the money. Developers who don't try to scam their players should be rewarded. It is currently £25 which is good value.

Overall, if you have an inclination to explore an underwater world and like the idea of diving, and improving your equipment to explore more and more areas, then seriously consider buying this game. This is what it excels at. The story and the graphics are good, but not exceptional. Survival game lovers might find the survival aspects a bit boring as they are pretty standard.

Huge underwater alien ocean to explore with countless caves, tunnels, and several layers of depth even under the ocean floor! The game will give you the creeps and really gives you an immersive feeling when the sound, graphics, and story mash together.

The game is not linear at all, the game's story is scattered in wreckage across the sea floor and crashed ships etc. It's up to you to carve your own story and survive the world of Planet 4645B, this game isn't about killing. It's about evading, surviving and when you meet a leviathan class for the first time you will understand.

Gorgeous underwater bioluminescence and some really interesting biomes to explore, lots of gadgets to craft and use, base building, submarines to craft and make mobile bases. There is a lot to do in Subnautica, I spent around 100 hours and completed practically everything exploring including story, it was one of those few games that kept me interested to the very end.

It has some performance issues, the game runs on unity and maybe they will get that incremental garbage collection plugin to their engine to help performance. Other than that the game is amazing and a must buy.

However the game does have some decent attributes. A great atmosphere, you fell lost in a world surrounded by ocean in an almost cast away feel to it. The creature design is amazing, and that comes from expierencing what they are, if there friendly and what can they do. Building is satisfying but so etimes awkward, and when story rolls around eventually it is good but cant be told without looking at pdfs which can get annoying. Its a decent game but i personly would wait for a few patches, or dive right in but its up to you. Expand

It doesn't hold your hand, which is a nice departure from many top tier games nowadays. But it can also make the game drag. For example. I needed a laser cutter to finish my exploration of a ship that's vital to moving forward. The cutter required 2 diamonds to build. I'd never seen a diamond before and had no idea where to find one. The game gave zero indication.

All in all, a fantastic game with one nagging question. Within the first few hours of gameplay, you'll have a seabase bigger than your own real life house, unlimited power, your own submarine and food and water that can be plucked in moments, a few feet outside your front door.

Is this really a survival game or are you a bored hermit, pushing his luck just because.

    Original Review (1/10):
The game director has no tolerance for political opinions that differ from his own. He fired his sound designer for not having politically correct thoughts. I won't support a company with this level of political correctness. Sad that politics had to ruin the experience because it's pretty close to being a great game. The game is currently free on Epic Games, so you can check it out without financially supporting pc/sjw culture. I would recommend playing it for free, as the exploration aspects are very enjoyable. Gaming is just not a good place for political agendas in my opinion.

-Original and well-executed core idea. The "water planet" backdrop is both a nightmare and a paradise.
-Creative story and lore. I loved the plot, though I found some areas out of order.

    The downsides:
-(Again) Out of order events. I felt completely lost at times because I ran into "deeper" areas out of order, often using the wiki or youtube to see what to do next.
    - Would benefit if they made the beacon a reusable tool so you don't have to remake this item repeatedly a couple dozen times (then forget when you need it most).
-I wish I chose the "no food/water consumption" mode. I built things in my base to help, but I found myself tethered to my base because of it.
-The Prawn suit needs more arms imo. That way you can be spiderman and not have to switch out appendages.

Conclusion: The beginning of the game is extremely entertaining. The latter part gets tedious, especially if you have to deal with food/water every 15 minutes. Still a great and unique game.

I really like these kind of games where you start with nothing so you go out exploring and gather stuff to build a base and upgrade things in order to be able to explore further. When it comes to those kinda games I'd say this is one of the better ones.

There's definitely flaws to it though, like the small inventory and how long time it takes to travel after a while when you need to go far and deep. There was also times for me when I had absolutely no clue of where to go, even though I really tried to pay attention to the storytelling.

I've seen a lot of complaints about bugs, to my understanding most of it should be fixed by now, but not completely, The worst thing that happend to me was when I clipped out of bounds with the robot suit while being waaay down with the cyclops and everything, this caused the water physics to stop working and it didn't go back to normal until I killed myself, leaving all my stuff down there.

TL;DR: A very fun survival game with a few flaws that is definitely worth your time and money.

Subnautica is splendid isolation, warts and all

I never had much patience for the open world crafting simulators before. Narrative games are my jam, and most of that genre, have little story. But at some point I stumbled over a trailer for Subnautica, and it stuck with me. That endless, light-flooded ocean was just so… beautiful. So after years of hesitation, I took the plunge.

Subnautica casts you in the role of the sole survivor of a spaceship crash occurring on a water world. Your task is to manage your oxygen, hunger and thirst meters, and make use of your star trek tech level replicator, digital blueprints and abandoned resources you find all over the handcrafted map to build yourself a rocket and fly home.

The primary gameplay loop is you scrounging for things in ever more extreme environments. Food, resources, tech tree advances, all have to be picked up by hand, and fed into the replicator. There is a metroidvania like structure to it, because parts of the hand-crafted map are simply not accessible to you until you craft certain items or vehicles (oh yes, you don’t stay swimmer forever).

Occasionally you might build a base, a process that is almost painless (the game engine sometimes is a bit picky about placements) and can be quite engrossing. I usually don’t get into this kind of thing, but I couldn’t resist plopping down a three story underwater dream house with a sun-flooded bedroom just because I could. It’s also useful to have small outposts at a few key locations in the game, and it gives a great feeling of accomplishment to slowly fill the map with little summer houses here and there.

The secondary gameplay loop is all about exploring the map. Certain things you need to find are telegraphed, but at some point the game just takes the training wheels off and expects you to go adventuring on your own.

On a third level of play, you have an actual plot, a rarity in this genre. It’s a little thin on the ground, more a seasoning and less the backbone of the game, but the writing is decent and even shows a sparkling wit now and then.

All these modes of play are helped immensely by how pretty this game is and how excellent and immersive the traversal mechanics are. I have never seen a more convincing and entrancing simulation of diving and underwater exploration. The lighting is great, the flora and fauna are strange and fascinating, and getting around in it is a joy, whether you are swimming, driving a submarine or stomping around in a giant robot suit.

It also bears mentioning that for me at least, the game had a very satisfying ending. That’s not nothing these days.

Not everything works as well, though: Some fauna are supposed to be dangerous, but overtime their threat diminishes. The ocean surface looks terrible when seen from a distance, which, coincidentally, isn’t possible all that much. A few locations look a little goofy or sparse, which leaves a few scratches on the immersion.

And then there are the poor optimization and the bugs: Texture Pop In was a pretty consistent and pretty annoying problem in some regions of the map. On occasion, the game suddenly thought I was on dry land when I was actually swimming in the ocean. Once, that actually left me stranded in a place I could only get out of with the help of the developer console. This didn’t destroy my enjoyment of the game, but it wrung a few sighs of exasperation from me.

The production values are mostly very high: I already mentioned the strong art direction, but it bears repeating: the world the player moves through is a beautiful work of art. The soundscape is appropriately sparse and very immersive. There is even voiced dialogue on occasion, and the voice work... It’s fine. Nothing special, but it does the job.

All in all it’s just a joy to exist, survive, scavenge and build in this world. Having a concrete goal to work towards is great, but that’s not the main attraction of this game. Having this gorgeous little world all to yourself is.

TLDR: The ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience, despite minor and more than minor blemishes. If this sounds good to you, I recommend you play this game.

This ocean world survival game has as great atmosphere. learning new recipes and unlocking new areas and depths drives you to explore further, although fearful of what you might find or get lost in underground cave systems and drown.
the game plot is mainly told through records you pick up and audio recordings until you get further in to the game. You can play and enjoy the game for hours simply crafting and expanding your base. you especially want to find a way to have a constant water and food supply, once you have that sorted you are free to progress or drag the plot as you feel free.

The game is great but once you have completed the game there isn't as much re-play-ability as I would like as once you know where things are and areas to avoid you can easily set yourself up with little threat - knowing where to go and your limits.
There is also a fair few glitches of note - your buildings can be seen through objects and landscapes, areas loading really slowly once there are lots of crafted objects in an area - as a result I had an instance where I glitched through a permanent wall and became stuck out of bounds, having to reload an older save.

if you like open world and survival games I would highly recommend this game - I would like to give it a higher score but the glitches unfortunately mean a lower rating for me

Subnautica, developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, is an immersive underwater survival game that plunges players into a vast and mysterious alien ocean. With its stunning visuals, deep exploration, and nerve-wracking encounters, this game offers a unique and captivating experience that keeps players on the edge of their seats.

The first thing that strikes players in Subnautica is its breathtaking beauty. The underwater world is teeming with vibrant marine life, stunning coral reefs, and awe-inspiring biomes. The attention to detail in the environment is exceptional, creating a sense of wonder and immersion. The game's day-night cycle and dynamic weather effects further enhance the atmospheric experience, making exploration both visually stunning and rewarding.

Survival is the core focus of Subnautica, and the game excels in creating a sense of vulnerability and tension. As players navigate the depths, they must manage resources, oxygen levels, and hunger, all while avoiding or confronting hostile creatures. The fear of the unknown and the constant threat of danger create a palpable sense of dread, heightening the sense of immersion and making each decision and discovery meaningful.

The exploration in Subnautica is vast and rewarding. The game world is filled with secrets, wrecks, and hidden resources to discover. The progression system is well-designed, gradually unlocking new tools and equipment that allow players to explore deeper and face greater challenges. Unraveling the mysteries of the alien world through logs and story fragments adds an additional layer of intrigue, motivating players to delve deeper into the unknown.

Subnautica's sound design is superb, contributing to the game's immersive atmosphere. The ambient sounds of the ocean, the eerie cries of underwater creatures, and the unsettling music create a haunting and immersive experience. The audio cues play a crucial role in building tension and alerting players to potential dangers, enhancing the overall sense of immersion and unease.

The crafting system in Subnautica is robust and rewarding. Players can gather resources from the environment to create tools, equipment, and bases that aid in survival and exploration. The variety of blueprints and upgrades available provide a sense of progression and allow for customization to suit individual playstyles. The base-building aspect adds a layer of creativity and personalization, giving players a sense of ownership and security in the harsh underwater world.

Despite its strengths, Subnautica does have a few minor flaws. The performance on certain platforms may suffer from occasional frame rate drops and technical issues. Additionally, some players may find the survival mechanics, such as the need to constantly manage resources, hunger, and oxygen, to be overly challenging or repetitive.

Subnautica is an immersive and thrilling underwater survival adventure that pushes the boundaries of exploration and fear. Its stunning visuals, deep and mysterious world, and nerve-wracking encounters create an unforgettable experience. The game's emphasis on survival and exploration, coupled with its atmospheric sound design and robust crafting system, make it a standout title in the genre. Despite a few technical shortcomings and potentially repetitive mechanics, Subnautica is a must-play for those seeking a captivating and immersive underwater survival experience. It earns a solid 8/10 rating for its ability to immerse players in a haunting and awe-inspiring alien world.

In Summary: It's a rewarding first person game, but it isn't an 'A'.

    The Good:
    1) Great exploration and survival play in a novel ocean world environment.
    2) Pretty color palette and lighting effects.
    3) Crafting and base building adds to this game significantly.
    4) The product has an entrepreneurial feel.

    The Bad:
    1) All that technology and no ability to create a map? This gets really annoying.
    2) Most aliens weren't very alien ... just variations on common earth species, and not well thought out. Barracudas, sharks, kelp. Aquatic mushrooms? Not great.
    3) The ecology/biology of the map was not compelling at all. Reefs and kelp beds don't form in this way. An hour long talk with an oceanographer would have yielded a much superior biome layout..
    4) Radiation does not work like this.
    5) Crash fish? A basic understanding of biology would have helped here.
    6) It can turn into a grind after a while...more work than fun.

    The Ugly:
    1) Lacks spear guns ... not even a trident. This is a political statement that they are welcome to make in their own product, but it does impair the experience. They do have torpedoes though ... I find this strange.
    2) Fired a staff member for making his conservative opinions known. As I understand it, this was on his private time and account. I'll spare you the soap box, and just state that these types of incidents are very worrisome and I cannot support any organization that threatens freedom of expression. (That said, to respect the reader I left this point out of my rating considerations, and relied on the previous points to assign a value)

It's a big logical hole for me. I felt the story didn't involved me that much at times and the task of keeping me alive was kind of boring. I did prefer to die then try to run fish for water or food. The lack of proper storing capacity becomes a problem and the solution they have wasn't very efficient. I give it a 72%. For an indie game it's impressive. Expand

The engine can't even handle distances. Everything which is farther than 500m got a basic overall texture which repeats itself about every 5 m2, and nothing shows up besides the raw surface. This is especially helpful when you looking for some material from above, and it is there but not there, so you going to miss it.

There is nothing else in the game than widely spread materials what you constantly need, and you either found them or not and looking Youtube videos for help (that's why it is the most discussed PC game of '18). If not, you can spend infinite time to find what you need, by luck. The entire "excitement" is based on that. After you learned from videos what to do, you become totally bored.

The game also channeling constant desperation and loneliness. If you thought that Generation-Z is a lonely game without additional players, that is nothing, compared to this. But of course this is not necessarily a bad thing, because it's part of the story line.

The crafting mechanics is polished and you feel that 90% of the game making time was spent on that (10% on the graphics), but without game mechanics, it worth very little.

You can't just put a player into loneliness for 100+ hours and expect positive results (okay, actually you can, since the game got highly positive reviews for a reason which is beyond me).

But to be honest, this game is very unique in its own way, so I have to recommend it.

Fish and other more dangerous creatures would oftenly clip through solid objects, which also hurt the overall experience.

The enemies were also quite derpy and once you get used to them it becomes trivial to avoid them.

In the second half of the game, especially the end, it did really get excruciatingly dull when it came to gathering materials for the "final ingredients" and components in order to finish.

Overall this is a fairly enjoyable game if you're a fan of diving and exploring the natural world, with a few caveats.

I had slept on Subnautica for the longest time, it had been in my library more or less since release and until now I only had around an hours play-time in it. I viewed it as just a weird underwater survival sandbox but it really is so much more than that.

Firstly the game looks great, it's very colourful and the different biomes take on a whole new colour palette whenever you enter them and leave them which makes the world feel more enjoyable to explore.

The different fauna and fish; the amount of detail and lore they've put into these things just from scanning them is absurd, but in a good way. There's always something to read and learn and eventually you begin to feel one with the surrounding marine life.

The resources you get are interesting, or at least the way you get them is interesting and fun to me. A bit of mining, a bit of cutting and combining them to make new items so that you can fabricate even more advanced materials and items. It's no different really from most survival crafting games but there's something a lot more satisfying about getting items in this game than it is others. Maybe it's just the sound of the fabricator.

There is an overarching story, but I won't delve too deep into it, basically you've crashed on an alien planet and need to get off the planet; and some other stuff happens here, there and in-between, but I won't spoil it here.

My only real criticism is that some resources can be rather difficult to find, Kyranite especially. You can be wandering around for quite a long time in the completely wrong area and have absolutely no idea that you're wasting your time. So you end up basically scanning the entire map to find out where to go, only to need to get an upgrade to go there. Which isn't a problem, getting the upgrades is part of the fun, but it can be rough after searching for a while, finding where you need to go, only to back-track to get the resources to go there. Feels like time wasted.

Furthermore in order to complete certain tasks, you need certain items which are hidden in deep sea bases, without some of them, it's near impossible to complete the game.

Sometimes you get a weird frame-stutter bug when entering and exiting a vehicle, it's noticeable but it's not game breaking by any means.

I enjoyed my time in Subnautica, it's one of those games where you'll be asking. "Where did the time go?" And next thing you know, it's 5am.

Don't do what I did and sleep on this, it's a phenomenal game. For a first run, just have your goal to be to complete the game and you'll find the magic that's laced throughout this amazing world.

7/10 - Will likely do another playthrough at some point.

Overall this is an interesting game and initially pretty fun. However what dooms this game to a less than stellar score is the bugs and general lack of polish. Let's start with the bugs because these are the most game breaking.

Later in the game you have to use the prawn suit to get around. The problem is that hit detection is so bad that it gets stuck on everything, including air.

Countless times I've been walking around and suddenly I can't move anymore. Nothing works. You can get out but getting back in solves nothing. Often you get stuck on scenery but I've gotten stuck walking down a hallway, on a beach, etc. It appears that the suit clips into the surroundings and you're stuck. The only workaround is to restart. It gets worse towards the end of the game where you are in tighter areas. I had to restart 5 times on the last area alone.

Yet another issue with the prawn suit is that if you save while inside then often when you reload it flings you and the suit in a random direction. You won't stop until you eject from the suit at which point everything recovers. However once you're in this state you cannot recover without ejecting. In one case I was in a facility and reloaded and it did that. When I reloaded the suit was inside the walls bouncing around as it hit invisible walls. After several restarts it finally flung me out of the facility. But before I could eject I had already gone so far that I was outside the world itself. There was no way to get back.

Yet another bug with the prawn is that if you are inside and get out then (at least in facilities) you remain the shrunken height that the game treated you while you were in the suit. So everything is above your head. Restarting solves the issue.

The cyclops is almost as bad. It is also needed late in the game but gets stuck on things and there is no way to get it off or reset if you've saved already. In one case I had no choice but to use the cheat console to build a new one and move my stuff across so I could destroy the old one.

Other bugs are annoying but not as bad such as signs in your base not remembering their colors or the cyclops moving if you get into and out of it several times.

The survival mechanics are typical but there is really way too much grinding. You are constantly having to search for lots and lots of items and the game doesn't make it easy to find things. Navigating early on isn't hard but without a useful coordinate system it is hard to find things. This gets really bad late in the game when you're 1K+ meters down and it is dark, in the cyclops trying to navigate and you keep finding corners you cannot get out of. Some player-friendly help here would have been very useful. Even a map with pins would have helped.

The story itself starts off strong but after about day 5 it pretty much ends. There is an overarching mission but nothing really directs you to anything. Early on messages recommend where you go next but by mid game you don't get anymore. It's like they forgot to implement the rest. So many times you are stuck wondering what you should do next. Some better directions are definitely needed.

For improving your survival you can get better vehicles but honestly the seamoth is the only good one. The cyclops is too large, gets attacked by everything, drains power really fast, is hard to maneuver and is expensive to maintain. If it weren't for the depth I'd never use it. The prawn is expensive to create but its movement and jump are really bad to the point that it simply isn't fun. I'd prefer the seamoth.

Building a base is fun but it is really tedious. Between all the gear you need, the limited storage you have, the constant balance of power and strength and the tediousness of actually building quickly drains you. I spent hours just trying to set up a simple base that I could use for the middle of the game. Some optimizations here would be nice like being able to copy or save blueprints would be nice. Several times I had to start over because I couldn't get some structures to line up. Redoing all the work is painful.

Overall it is a fun game early on. But the middle game is bland and directionless. The last part of the game is buggy. Perhaps if the bugs are resolved this game could go up a point or two.

(I'm about 30 hours in but the high number of predators you can't really get rid of has me so frustrated that I'll either start using cheats or quit)
Annoying as this is, it also means that there is no way to explore probably more than half of the game in peace. Most fans of the game then argue "just use creative mode" - which of course robs you of the story, the step-by-step progression and the survival in terms of food and water.
On top of it, the game was released in a ridiculously buggy state. Even the save system is very flawed - when you load up your last save, you will probably have a different item equipped and it doesn't save which lights are switched on or off.
Every time I load a save, I hear some announcement about emergency power and shortly afterwards that power has been restored because... in fact, my ship/base does have more than enough power.
Fish can still glitch through the hull of the base. And they occasionally twitch around in ways that look weird, aren't physically plausible and probably happen because of bugs as well.
The scanner room seems glitched - the list of things to scan for changes seemingly randomly. Different people say different things about what affects it.
And then there are a number of design flaws. For instance, building new base parts generally reduces the overall hull integrity of the base. But you can only see how it affects it when you actually build it. No numbers are shown beforehand, so it's going to be a surprise whether your base will start to leak. Inventory management works very well but the list of blueprints is really annoying to browse thanks to HUGE icons.

It has nice graphics, but I got bored about halfway through the game. Every mission seems to be the same - you get a mayday signal, run to the lifepod, but are too late and everyone is dead. The crafting got very tedious after a while and the story is pretty basic. I feel this game is overrated.
