Firstly, all the people giving out the common complaints, no LAN, one campaign, $60, etc. are idiots, plain and simply. LAN only enables people to play without paying, thus rendering a lower profit and lower incentive to make the game. Yes, it's one campaign, but it's a full game's worth. You have to be a complete moron to think that Blizzard would put out 1/3 of a game. On the $60 price point, games have cost $50 for over a decade; since then, the production cost has increased, and the value of the dollar has decreased. $60 now is less than $50 was when games started charging $50. Felt that the game lost some of it's draw over the decade in-between sequels. A lot has happened since then, making it tough to go back and play an old school RTS without some disappointment. The game does what it wants to do with excellence, but falls short of the greatness that the original achieved.

I'd rather give this game 100 points out of 10 for reasons I'll come back to after my review. My review can be short, enough people already said it: - The game still has the exact same base principles which made it the best RTS of all times back in 98. - I personally believe the game has even better controls - The challenges and achievements just work really good - The campaign I'd rather give this game 100 points out of 10 for reasons I'll come back to after my review. My review can be short, enough people already said it: - The game still has the exact same base principles which made it the best RTS of all times back in 98. - I personally believe the game has even better controls - The challenges and achievements just work really good - The campaign has an epic story so far (saying otherwise makes me believe you didn't pay attention to it or haven't played the campaign yet). Brilliant CGI to support it too! - Addition of specialization trough research and improvement through hiring mercenaries and buying better hardware work great too. These are the reasons I'd give this game a 10. But I would like to give that score 9 times more to make a 100 out of ten just because I read reviews like: - "People beat me big time in multi-player, lame: score = 1" -- If you can't play it's your problem, don't blame the game for it... - "It's an ok game, but not the best ever. Score: 1" -- So you give good games a score of 1? You mean you want to give it a 5 or 6 but because so many people do like the game you feel like giving it a 1 so the game will get a lower score just like it should have in YOUR eyes? - "Too expensive, especially for only one campaign. Score: 0" -- You get allot more in this game than you'll get in most other games. It's well worth the price. Also only stating the high price and giving 0 points means the same as thinking every other aspect of the game you can think of is just fine but doesn't earn points for the game. Just a couple of reviews I can really get agitated about and made me want to rant. Reviews are opinions, but if you scale the score of your review down (or up like I'd really like to do here since it feels like I need to) your trying to shape the average opinion towards yours instead of generating a fair average opinion. You just can't earn achievements when playing it, but it does allow you to play offline. But still, if you (like me) have a dedicated internet connection (I'm a WoW player after all), then it's not a problem. I happen to like BNET and all its features, except for Real ID, which is easily turned off through parental controls. 3) Only One Campaign: There's only one campaign, but it's the size of all three campaigns from SC1 put together. 30 missions. 4) Unbalanced Units: I played the beta and it's one of the most balanced games in multiplayer I have played in a looong time. I just suck at it. 5) Graphics Are Choppy: I played on high settings (with most on ultra) and I play on a laptop. It ran really smoothly, probably around 30 FPS. If you're looking to get 60, then yeah, you might not be able to, but when the human eye only detects 26, why bother with more than 30? Expand

Also, the game as a whole felt like it was taking me by the hand, step-by-step, leaving little to the imagination. Even parts in the campaign made me feel like the game was made with eight year olds in mind where the protagonist(Jim Raynor) would repeat what objective he had to do and exactly how he was going to do it. Great animations, great quality overall but, again, the single player could have had more of a story to tell and felt more "epic", more "complete" without tacked on side quests with no real value other than to contribute to gimmicks such as aquiring cash for armour or new units. I'm hopeful the community will put together some good custom maps ala WarCraft III in due time, however. Single Player gets an 8/10 from me. Story just wasn't all that and some parts simply felt thrown together. Multiplayer, in time, should prove to be a good experience but i'm not liking the popularity listings of custom maps. Honestly, if you want to play it for custom maps stick with WarCraft III for now, if the SC2 competitive RTS is what you're realling looking into then go for it(WC3 and SC are very different). Again, single player could have been better. Expand

The game is every bit worth they hype and although some elements are missing that you might know from other RTS games, it brings a fresh revitalized feel to the whole RTS genre and it is true to Starcraft. You have to have a really great state of the art video card to play the game at the highest resolution and detailed settings, it also takes 12GB of install space.

While this game certainly is well made, I still can't understand why it took so long to make. There really is no big difference between the old StarCraft and the new StarCraft. Graphics is better, there is a new storyline with beautyful cutscenes, but still the gameplay is exactly the same as the first one. Not much new has been added and that is why I can't give this more than an 8.

Solid, quality next-gen Starcraft. Tactics are solidly upgraded over the first version (i.e zerging isn't rewarded as much as before), it looks beautiful, and remains as intense and well-balanced as ever. For all those whining about frame rates and graphics...get a computer that doesn't suck.

I'm suprised at the few hyperbolic low scores here... the game has been out for one day, and some of the problems are on the user end, it seems. Additionally, people seem to think that this is 1/3 of a game... however, the campaign is just as long as that of a full game, and is much more robust than the original and most other current gen strategy games. Rest assured that it is not short on content. This is a fun game, and a challenging one at that. Some people might feel that Blizzard didn't depart from the original enough, but this is intentional (i.e. don't break what isn't broken and don't alienate the eSports community). The current level of balance between the races is good, but Zerg are a little under the weather (though my favorite). Chat channels and clans are coming, so don't fret too much about their current absence. Keep in mind that most games (PC) ship with many bugs and balance issues to work out, especially one with so much weight in multiplayer. The first Starcraft was no different, and was relatively light on graphics cards and servers. Give this game a month or two and it will be at full force. Until then, enjoy a very good game. Expand

I don't feel like I'm playing a new game much as replaying something I've beat before. I guess that's one way to create a sequel, and it was probably the safest path for Blizz, but I was hoping for a bit more innovation. Rumor has it that each races single player campaign will be sold seperately? I'm not sure I believe it, but that would fall in line with past decisions by Blizz, and the general trend of the modern market. Shipping without campaigns for multiple races lost it a point though. Last complaint is mostly concern about multiplayer micro. Either you've mastered it, or you lose. That's it. It's razor-fine balance that makes multi unenjoyable for casuals. Overall, worth $50. $60 seems a bit much, but I bought it so it must be close. Expand

It has expanded from just building up an army and blowing things up, to following story lines, choosing your missions and unit/tech advancement that make the campaign a totally different experience than the multiplayer. Speaking of the multiplayer, the new [...] is incredible. The matching engine has been phenomenal. For me at least, it always finds a challenging yet equal leveled player. Even when you lose you think, "had I just done a couple things differently I could have won." Those kinds of experiences are great for learning and as you play you get better and try out and see different techniques. The leagues and ladder system is an incentive to play and get better and is fun to watch yourself climb the latter and join higher leagues. I love to view and compare my opponent's statistics and see their achievements. The built in replay system is another major improvement. It's extremely helpful to have replays of all your matches and be able to review them to study the timing and tactics. The changes in [...] would have been worth the $60 alone. I've only heard 3 complaints: no LAN, lack of chat rooms (there are lots of personal and party chat features), and the game feels incomplete without equal campaigns for Zerg and Protoss. How many LAN games have you played in the last 5 years where you didn't have access to the internet? I can personally think of 3 and when you recognize the benefits of having everything connected to an online system that tradeoff isn't even a question. To invest tons of more time and effort into supporting that you lose time and energy to put into the game details itself. I say leave it out. 2. Lack of chat room in [...]. I personally found the chat rooms to be annoying, but others liked them, I'd be willing to bet it gets a patch to include them before years end. The last item is one I read a lot about and can't understand and that's people feel somehow ripped off by not having the other 2 campaigns. It's simple there is enough material and experience in this one game than both SC and Brood Wars combined. We have no idea what Blizzard is going to release with the next 2 games, I'm confident though that if it's the same cost, they will include enough to make it worth it, if they don't, it won't cost as much as the current one does. I don't think even Blizzard knows how much it's going to cost or include. So why freak out about it now? Bottom line, the campaign is enough to cover a stand alone game. Expecting that kind of detail X3 would be like asking someone to build you a house and then ask if they can build it 3X larger for the same amount of time and money. When you figure people spend $10 for 2 hours at the movie theater, $60 is a small price to pay for the hours, days, and years of entertainment this game will offer. Worth every penny and I'm excited to see what Blizzard has up their sleeve for the next 2 installments. Expand

Definitely took everything from the first game and made it much better. The balance vital to multiplayer is still there. Granted, you only have a terran campaign, but it's just as long as the combined campaigns of the three races from SC1. Worth the money by far, and can't wait for the expansions!

Simply a masterpiece and will start a revolution for casual RTS Games - just give it a month and most of the players are correctly rated. Then you will have mostly even matches only, already worked this in the beta. And the campain is absolutely awesome. Downside: got less sleep last few days.

Another excellent game from Blizzard, Starcraft II brings along a tour de force of gameplay, with excellent cutscenes, a wide variety of missions, and a gripping story line. The two more announced expansions only mean better things for the single player campaign, and nay-saying to the contrary, the new Battle.net remains an engaging and easy to use interface, making gaming online a breeze.

The multiplayer for Starcraft is the core of the game, and as usual, Blizzard has done a fantastic job on it, adding hundreds of hours on replay value. Though the game itself is good, it just isn't that magnificent as a whole. The lack of social communication between the Starcraft community is very lacking, given that there are no chatrooms, it is very difficult for others to interact with eachother. The single player itself is great, but that does not mean it does not need improvement. The missions are relatively similar, and is usually the same song and dance. Their attempt to use the in-game engine for the cinematics to replace the CGI was a terrible decision, and though it is not completely horrible - more could have been done to improve this aspect. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy this sequel , but will be dissappointed with the social aspect of the game. Expand

Blizzard knows what works, and in Starcraft 2, it shows. The fact that the single player has many units that are not available in the multi-player for balance issues, highlights the great effort that Blizzard made to make the different races balanced. It's more than just a new coat of paint on the old game, but you can see though that the gameplay is evolutionary of the original game, not revolutionary. Blizzard had to do this so the game would find instant favour with the legions of Starcraft 1 fans. However, you just know that Blizzard held back Protoss and Zerg campaigns so they can wring more cash out of people buying this game. And you can be guaranteed that those 'expansions' will contain new branches to the existing tech trees for multiplayer, so you will have to buy them, even if you're not interested in the campaigns. Let's face it, multiplayer is the core of this game - but no LAN play is a slap in the face, forcing you onto Battle.net. An obvious ploy to deter piracy at the expense of people who buy the game, and forcing people into their realm for buying their retarded horse DLC. You can be sure there will be a "complete" battle chest edition in the future, with all the content that should have been there from the start. Then if they add LAN play back in, this game would be a perfect 10. Expand

The story is much more involving than the first and Blizzard has really made a push to make it a more intense, real and interactive experience. The "No LAN play" issue isn't really an issue. I've been playing with my friends in the same room through battle.net just fine with no issue. LAN isn't really needed these days. Don't listen to the whiners. They're either stupid or bad players. This game includes all the options the original lacked (even though it was one of the best games ever!) including idle worker buttons, autocast, waypoints, order queuing, nonlinear campaign, etc). They've come up with some brilliant ways to alter gameplay while still making this game feel like the original and remain balanced. 10/10. Well done Blizzard. Expand

This is probably the BEST fantasy RTS game around. The game is similar in style to SC1, but rather than being a weakness, it has become its strength. The gameplay has been even more streamlined and the graphics have been given the next gen treatment. This is perfection. Well done Blizzard. Now waiting for Diablo 3 :)

It will bear a similarity to the original. Blizzards intent is to take the original game, refine it, tune it, add new content, spruce it up, and keep the story moving. It has succeeded on every count. There are a large number of new units: Certainly more then enough to completely alter the playing field, and add in a wide number of new strategies while still feeling like that Starcraft we know and love at its core. New units are neither a hackneyed add-on, nor an overpowered new addition: They fit into the new game seamlessly in clever, interesting new ways. Level design is varied, interesting, and quite open to user content

The single player is a real treat. As long as any previous Starcraft game, and there is actually a lack of, "Race A here, Race B there, now kill each other" scenarios. I started missing this standard, cliche level design, but the overwhelming variety of mission objectives is impressive. One mission your robbing a train using quick, mobile units, another your hunkering down for a zombie wave, while rapidly destroying the infestation mostly undisturbed by day, and suddenly you playing an almost puzzle-esque level of priority assassinations and planning. The variety is astounding. Achievements are interesting, and add a good deal of re-playability, and challenge missions add that little something extra

The Cons are pretty negligible. An extra 10 dollar price tag is a bit insulting, but Id finger point at Activision, and you are paying for quality. Loss of LAN will hurt only a very small percentage of people, thanks to the friend system: My internet is extremely unreliable, along with all the people I live with, and I have yet to observe any appreciable difference from traditional LAN play. Menus can get a bit confusing, and adding a friend manually is a bit annoying, and while the Facebook integration is interesting, but doesn't seem to be very reliable. Also, Protoss fans only get a brief glimpse of there single player, while Zerg get no single player outside of challenges, which may be annoying, but make no mistake: You get a full games worth of content here. Lastly, thanks to the 3 separate releases, don't get to attached to medics, fire bats, science vessels, or a number of other units: They do not yet carry over into Multiplayer. It's an understandable balance issue, we need to hold off until other races get there shiny new units, but its a tad annoying.

Sequels are a problem when they are pushed out constantly without much improvement to the overall design. SC2 took what, 12 years, and has the maximum possible new content without feeling like it's covering the core experience. Blizzard hasn't created a new life form, it has just taken a giant step forward in its evolution, with hardly a vestigial tail or wisdom tooth in sight. Perfect no, but I think it rounds up to a 10.

GRAPHICS: A very good looking RTS no doubt, the Zerg look creepy, the Protoss look shiny, and Terran look gritty, overall I think the graphics will hold up well and it's a very pretty game to look ing. SOUND: Pretty decent sound, each race is distinctive in the way it sounds you're not going to mistake the Zerg for the Terrans, also the swooshes and blips of the menus are nicely done. GAMEPLAY: This is where most people get divided, if you're a HUGE Supcom fan you're probably not going to like the gameplay as Starcraft is much more oriented with the Macro style gameplay, it's fast paced with most matches end in less than 15 minutes, but CAN last over an hour. VALUE: This is a high value game, the custom maps and mods are going to make this game into a game that is played for years to come. Overall it's definitely worth the money if you're an RTS fan. I also have to complement Blizzard on making the game scalable which indeed seems to be a corporate goal of theirs and the game runs amicably on systems much lesser than mine with tolerable settings. Where I was left a little aback on was how little upwardly the graphics scaled, having a more than capable system seemed to offer little difference than much lower rigs and at the hefty 60$ dollar tag and 12 years of possible development, it did leave me wanting a little more. Problem 1) the need to be logged in to play singleplayer that is seriously just a pain in the ass. Problem 2) The fact that the majority of units you can get in the campaign and lots of classic Starcraft Units cannot be used in the multiplayer (Firebats, Medics, Vultures, Diamondbacks, wraiths, Science Vessels, and Goliaths) and other units from the original starcraft are not even included (dark archons, Valkyries, Scouts, Corsairs, Reavers, Gaurdians, Arbiters, Devourers, Scourge, Defielers, and flying queens) like is there really a reason you need to take out a ton of the original units? 3) The protoss have been incredibly weakened to the point where they're almost not worth playing im not a great player but i am pretty decent but the loss of scouts, corsairs and arbiters has destroyed the protoss air forces void rays are good for destroying buildings and tanks and stuff but when they come up against another large force of air the specializes in anti air they will get destroyed, pheonix's are useless and carriers have had their build time increased. Reavers have been completly taken out meaning the protoss no longer have a long ranged anti building unit/defence unit (though i must admit the colossi are pretty good at holding back waves of ground units) and immortals while powerfull really dont have the punch or the range siege tanks do or the massive damage of ultralisks. No more dark archons means that you can no longer steal units from enemies which im sure that terran and zerg players are thankfull about but i always loved being able to branch out into other races and just in general if im low on minerals steal enemy units to bolster my own forces. as for defending your base Photon Cannons have had a huge range reduction and have had some damage reduction this makes defending your base from reapers incredibly hard as they can just hop cliffs anywhere and take out your buildings fast and always seem to stay just outside your cannon range while they hit your pylons. Despite all these flaws i still consider starcraft II to be a great game the terrain mechanics are just great small eye candy things you may not notice like the fact that when you blow up something if the wreckage is on a ramp it will slide down it (i just found that to be a cool thing in sc2) so obviously alot of work went into this game (10 freaking years of work) but its here now and hopefully through balancing and patches the races will be balanced because as it is protoss are waaaaaay underpowered Expand
