The KotOR series is one of my favourite series. When I first played the game, I had high hopes for it. The game impressed me, despite its age. Few games give as many choices, plot twists, and lovable characters. Sadly, I did get stuck and ended up looking up a quick guide, which ended up spoiling a bit plot twist.

One of the most epic games I;ve ever played. even over a decade old, I find myself reinstalling and replaying, one of the best storylines, gameplay mechanics and sound effects in gaming history. Voice acting as well can not be understated. two names Star wars, and Bioware.. so you know your in for the ride of your life

This is by far one of my personal favorites. I played this game years ago when I purchased the Star Wars Best of PC pack and was hooked. As a young Star Wars fan, when I started playing it, I was absolutely immersed in the story. Since it takes place long before the movies, it brings about a new and interesting story. Although not the best by today's standards, I still play it to this day.

If i had to describe the game in one word it would be "masterpiece". it is amazing how this game has a better story and more interesting characters then the Star Wars prequel trilogy that opens up the star wars universe in ways you couldn't imagine at the time. The RPG style gameplay works to perfection with an addicting leveling up system that makes you want to keep playing.

The story driven elements are perfectly suited to it's light side dark side karma-like mechanic. The combat system is very innovative allowing for strategy rather than charging opponents head on - very unique design. Gameplay is slick and easy, and there aren't enough words for how I would love to compliment this game. A very trademark game of Bioware. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i absolutely love this game, this is the perfect RPG
the story makes you feel like you're part of it,
the work that Old Bioware did here was a masterpiece, the characters are done brilliant, the Revan Plot twist was one of my biggest 'Wow' moments in my gamer life, the story is done very well
the gameplay is good for a RPG,the romance with Bastila was good and funny at the same time
my favourite character was HK-47 with his dark humor
suggestion:go buy it now with Kotor 2,this is what modern RPGs should take inspiration from.

KotOR is one of the most memorable games of all time. The first time I played it, was at least 10 years ago, but as soon as you mention any or the planets or characters, memories come flowing back as if it was yesterday. Just think for a second about Manaan, Kashyyyk, Rakatan, Taris, Bastilla, the Star Forge, Ebon Hawk, ect.

    - The soundtrack
    - The sidequest , some very good and intersting side quests and some few of them cant be done if you progress the main quest to far
    - Very good story/plot
    - Interesting characters/ companions , all with there own reason to join you etc. Like Hk-47, Carth , Bastila and Juhani for exemple.
    - A solid rpg with some hard choises
    - A game that does`nt hold you hand and show you where to go
    - Just hard enough
    - (Replaybilites) Haven`t checked this out but due to you can be both the dark side and light side and with multiple endings and choises i guess the game could easily warant 2 or 3 playtroughs.
    - More then decent voice acting

    Cons
    - I dont really have any here either

The best space rpg if you can call it that i know of beside perhaps mass effect 2.
Highly recommended if you really like rpgs , no matter wether or not if you really are a star wars fan or not. Quickly become one of my favourite games and screw that last boss Malak.

I decided to put my steam reviewe for this game here as i just finished kotor 2 too. Witch also will be reviewed.

@darthaegis i agree that KOTOR 2 is better then this game but the storyline for this game is much much better then KOTOR 2 but KOTOR 2 has better graphics....
@DegenCutter i have played this game when it first came out and the graphics were amazing...
i also STILL play this game and the whole reason the graphics suck right now is because niether bioware OR obsidian can take up the KOTOR name because disney is deciding what is canon.... and they dont know crap... no matter how old i get i will ALWAYS own and play this game.... i love going through the game and finding the easter eggs.... or unlocking something new that i havent found before....

Story: 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. Darth Malak, a former Jedi, Dark Lord of the Sith and Darth Revan's former apprentice, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Republic. Malak's aggression has left the Jedi scattered and vulnerable; many Jedi Knights have fallen in battle and others have sworn allegiance to Malak....

    Pros:
    • This game really does an excellent job in telling the story of a conflict within the Star Wars universe in a time in the universe Star Wars fans really didn't know much about in 2003. With many twists and turns you don't see coming and interesting characters with their own fascinating stories too.
    • Multiple endings depending on the decisions you make and they are great endings.

    Cons:
    • You really need to be nit-picky about cons with the story. But if I had a little one, it would just be the story is a little slow to start and takes it's time to get going.

Gameplay: The player choose from three basic character classes at the beginning of the game, and later choose from three Jedi subclasses. Each character has "skills" stats, tiered "feats", and later on, tiered Force powers.. Feats and Force powers are generally unlocked upon level-up, while the player is given skill points to distribute among their skills every level. Combat is round-based (like D&D) for most of the game you can have up to two companions with you.

    Pros:
    • The choice making and stat progressing system was very ground breaking for the time and the first time Bioware (or most western gaming companies) really were ambitious to make it work. It still holds up well and is an addictive aspect of the game.
    • Many different playstyles with your characters, so you can really make your character your own person with branching dialogue options, skills, blaster, swords, lightsabers and many force powers to choose from.
    • Exploring the planets has you engaged with the world with plenty of activities to get yourself immersed with it's characters, conflicts, quests and environments. With little mini games such as Pazak and Swoop Racing as well.
    • This game has a lot of replay value.
    • Took roughly 45 hours to beat the game, which is an excellent amount of playtime, especially with how you can get this game cheap these days.

    Cons:
    • Combat feels very simplistic. Plays a bit like D&D where you take turns to attack enemies and they attack you. Just feels very basic, underwhelming and compared to what Bioware does later on with other games. It functions alright, just overly simple.
    • The Ai can be really dumb or act weirdly. Such as getting stuck in a wall without you realising until you are forced to switch to them to fix it. Sometimes giving them a command can take ages for them to pull off and during dialogue or in-game cutscenes they can be in strange positions.
    • Sadly once you beat the game, it's over. No endgame or second playthrough with your cool equipment.

    Sound and Music:

    Pros:
    • The voice acting is top notch. With lots of really good dialogue and writing that actually feel unqiue to each character and adds to the the experience.
    • The sound fx just breaths Star Wars.
    • The music is really good. It captures each of the surroundings and settings very well and for original music, captures to vibe of Star Wars to a respectable degree. Of course we get some good old John WIlliams scores as well, but not many.

    Performance and Graphics:

    Pros:
    • Visually this game looks good for 2003 and good for Star Wars.
    • Frame rate was for the most part smooth.

    Cons:
    • Found many glitches during my time playing KOTOR. Most were harmless, but some caused certain save files to corrupt... this happened a good few times too.
    • The game crashed on me a good few times as well... which caused more save file corruptions...
    • Sometimes areas in the game world feel a little too empty with not enough scenery or objects around.

    Verdict:
I'm surprised I didn't played this game sooner. I love Bioware games, Lucas Arts and Star Wars, but never played the game that they made happen. This is a great RPG that tells a compelling and epic story with excellent characters, moral choices, character customization, and ones of the best Star Wars games ever made in a time where we were already getting some other great Star Wars games. It's has some flaws here and there with the performance issues being the real annoyance, But, at the end of the day, this game is completely worth every minute of your time.

    Story: 9.5/10

To start with, the game does have it's flaws, it does however take a very petty person to majorly mark down such an incredible work for a few minor blemishes that honestly exist at face value.

First of all, the story is incredible. I don't think anyone will deny this. As an RPG, this is what you should be looking for in the game primarily. Completing the game for the first time while doing most of the side missions took me about 35 hours. This game is the only one I have ever played whose story has had me up until unheard of times in the morning to discover what happens next. You should also be looking for a good progression system, and this game certainly does have that, making you feel majorly rewarded for levelling up as it grants you specific but significant bonuses.

The progression is also where the games first vice lies however. As once you have a handful of force powers the game has a significant drop in difficulty if you are a meta gamer, which you probably are if you're on meta critic and/or interested in a 9 year old game. The difficulty can be reduced by a meta gamer to the point that you will probably find the final boss and mission easier than the opening tutorial of the game. I do not know whether this was intentionally done by Bioware or not to further the sense of progression and your character's developing power, but it is certainly broken as the final boss was unthinkably easy, with minor minions earlier in the game giving me a harder time. Personally, I actually like this as it does give you a sense of progression much greater than most games, when you go from desperately chewing through medkits to kill a couple of thugs to easily tossing groups of high ranking enemies (rancor) aside with 2 or 3 force powers you feel like all you've done has meant something for you personally as the player, on top of the compelling plot which has many choices and a lot of well acted, branching dialogue.

The game is paced perfectly too, you always feel like you're doing something (and for a good reason, this game features no quests that feel like arbitrary "Kill X enemy" missions, all of them are unique and compelling) and something new and interesting happens regularly so long as you don't dawdle, giving you a constant stream of interesting dialogue and missions that can last you around 35 hours.

The final thing I would like to mention is the astonishing attention to detail and clear hard work that was put into the creation of this game, unlike most blatant shameless cash ins that we are so accustomed to now. For instance, there is a cantina called "The Drunk Side" the name of which you would only discover by stopping and clicking on the sign, which most players probably wouldn't. I found that rather amusing, and it obviously is completely unnecessary, but Bioware did it for that extra polish and layer of good will. They also present you with a vast array of 'Idiot Buttons', that is, opportunities to press/say things that will cause you to be insta-killed often in ways that may amuse the player just due to how idiotic the events were. It is not only brilliant that Bioware allows the player to do silly things like those,
but that they allow you to fail is the real stinger here.

Anyway, that is the end of my ridiculously large wall of text. I would like to point out that everyone that gave this game a score below 5 is clearly trolling and/or stupid, as this is a masterpiece of a game the likes of which I doubt we will bare witness to again for some time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars games. I love how it tells the story of what happened before any of the movies ever took place. The story follows your character who has no memory of his life, and goes out to find out. It turns out he is very sensitive in the force, and has the skills of a Jedi. Meanwhile, the game's main villain Darth Malek is looking for an ultimate weapon to power his Sith fleet. This game also has multiple endings depending on your choices in the game. If you make good choices (such as saving the lives of others, or helping the needy), then you follow the path of the Jedi, but if you make bad choices (killing the needy, torturing people), then you go onto the Sith. Making these choices will change not only your personality and traits, but also how events in the game will play out. I would give an example, but that would be spoiling too much. As for the gameplay, it is excellent. You have a lot of freedom to make choices in the game (not total freedom, but freedom enough), and you can have a lot of fun doing it too. The combat may be turn-based like in any other RPG, but you wouldn't know it from how graphic it is. There are many animations your character can do in combat, and it all makes it look so real. This makes the combat in this game much more enjoyable. The graphics are enjoyable as well. Everything in this game looks very bright and colorful. Overall, this is an excellent Star Wars game. However, believe it or not, this is not my favorite Star Wars game (that would be Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy). The only real problem I have with this game is its sequel. Unlike most people, I think that KOTOR II kind of, uh, sucks (read my review of that game for more details), but who am I to think that the first game is bad just because of its sequel? Overall this game is flawless, and it should not be judged by KOTOR II. Expand

My screen is 1920x1080, but there was no option for wide screen with 1280x1024 being the widest option with not even an option to play in windowed mode.

I know the graphics are old and don't look that good as it is, but the game looks even more terrible since I can't optomise the screen.

Characters end up looking squashed, short and wierdly wide looking. Can't even customise how my character looks. Only get to choose out of several faces, a face I like best. Doesn't even give you minor choice of choosing hair or eye colour.

Combat is boring. With a bug that sometimes after battle my character end ups frozen not able to move unless I reload. As well as occasional crashing, though the game only crashed around half a dozen times. I did not have any problems getting the game to run, I have windows 7 64 bit and my PC is only 3 years old.

Quests are rather dull and unimaginative, mostly just fetch this or kill that.
With a lot of endless walking down boring corridors.

The game is sort of alright. Though Overhyped. To me it's not as good as most make out.
There are heaps better more enjoyable RPG's out there, that aren't so flawed.

The awesome story, imaginative deep star wars Universe and interesting characters is the only thing for me that makes this game worth playing.

Also in the last battle I did not have any offensive force powers, only support powers. As I made my character support and the other jedi's in my party more offensive. I did not realise this would be a bad thing till I got to the last boss.

So since you can only fight Malak solo and he leeches health from the jedi trapped in the tanks every time I damage him, is annoying as the only way to destroy the tanks is with offensive force powers which I do not have, so this made the battle very long, frustrating and drawn out. I don't want to start the game again and don't have any previous saves. I just used master speed to run away and avoid him and lay down mines, so he gets damaged a bit then drains a tank to heal, kept doing that until he drained all tanks before facing him so the fight would be more fair.

Then fought him with light sabre and master speed and healing, use stimulants and then run off when my force energy gets low and keep running until it replenishes and repeat until he goes down, it took quite a while though and finally managed to beat him and complete the game and get a rather dull game ending.

I was originally going to rate the game a 7 but because of the game punishing you if you chose no offensive powers with no other way to destroy the tanks and no respec if you made a mistake which I did not realise would happen as I wanted to play as a support class, seems very flawed and seems to make it that you can only beat the game best as a soldier. This game is way too old and flawed to recomend anymore.

It's certainly the best thing the Star Wars franchised has created since The Empire Strikes Back, and its one of the best RPG's created as well. Fantastic narrative, characters, atmosphere, level design, and gameplay all make KOTOR a groundbreaking game.

The best game ever. A great Star Wars RPG with an incredible replay value, especially due to the fact it is open ended. The story is really immersing as you get involved to it. A classic game which had its sequel in KOTOR 2, but still deserves KOTOR 3 and not SWTOR, the MMORPG.

The Best Star Wars game ever! The story just great and unforgetable. Maybe the fight is slow when you played the 3.921.034th times over, but put that away this game is great and everyone should play with this at least onece in his/her life.

There are very few games that I would describe as "essentially perfect". This game is one of them. I have never played a better classic RPG, and certainly never a better classic RPG that also had a story to rival the original Star Wars movies. I cannot recommend this game enough. If you like a great story with great characters and deep gameplay, then you must play this game.

    But if you

But if you are one of the children who require fast, furious and shallow gameplay with no reading required of you then I suppose you must skip this title and go back to Call of Battlefield 7.

This is a game that shows how and why console games can be excellent games; classics, even.

The PC port is pretty good, as the story and gameplay loses none of its excellence through the transition. This is one of those rare things: a perfect game.

The level of control that you have over your characters' actions is truly remarkable... Simply put, this is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the original trilogy. [Feb 2004, p.112]
  2. This is a class act that builds and extends the Star Wars game franchise and PC gamers are getting something their kindred XBOX owners loved to bits and will not be disappointed in any way.
  3. It offers some pretty fundamental improvements over the Xbox version and stands as one of the best PC RPGs out there.
