Have been a supporter since the Kickstarter campaign. The game showed so much promise and it was an amazing idea. However, months after the Kickstarter campaign while doing the citizencons and other meetings they promise so many things, scope creep has been rampant. I have supported the game with more than $2000 USD and the game show no signs of ever actually being released. As a tech demo its ok , but its poorly optimised it can barely run on the recommended hardware. If you are on the fence to back this game, please dont. Its a big scam, the game is never going to release and they will just promise many features and ships and they are unable to delivery them. They claim that a ship takes them at least 1 year to deliver. This is completely outrageous. There is no galaxy to explore, just a couple of places to visit and that’s it.

You cant crack rocks solo that are worth anything, the rest of the rocks in the system are worthless or have 2% of the resourse your looking for. They are killing all their own gameplay loops. I worry that since you "pledge" IRL money to get starting ships that they are conveniently forcing the player base to shell out more cash for better ships that are otherwise going to take you many in game hours, weeks or months to obtain. I truly hope they fix the game so it becomes a more fun, less masochistic game that people can enjoy. Expand

First off, I don't hate this game. I want to love it. At this stage in development I'm so jaded and have no faith in the entire development team.

I get that the game is in development and subject to change but I got used to a flight model just for them to change everything. LTI insurance was touted as being a big deal then we got a rug pull on that..

Man kann praktisch keinen Mission abarbeiten von Anfang bis Ende ohne mindestens über 2-3 bugs zu stolpern von den manche Gamebreaking sind.

10 years in development the game is still barely playable. Almost 0 gameplay in it and still a pletory of bugs preventing you from playing the little they added in 10 years. Don't be misled by the beautiful images you can see left and right published by zealots. The demo is beautiful indeed but it's never going to be a decent game from a tech and gameplay point of view.

I have upgraded my computer 3 times during the development cycle for this game and it still plays like garbage. Absolute horror show of bugs. They keep scaling back the designs of the ships and delivering potatoes instead of sleek ships they advertised. Can't play for more than half an hour without some sort of game breaking bug where all cargo or mining inventory and the ship is lost. Takes entirely too dang long just to wake up from the hospital and claim a ship, find the ship, then get in it to fly. The last few times I have logged in most of the time spent was not flying or playing a game loop. It was just traveling to get to the ship or sitting in hyperspace jump or flying down to a planet surface. This game is lost in development hell. Everything in me wants to rate it higher but I know that would just be lying. It's simply a broken mess. Every single system is a design catastrophe. UI, Inventory, Flying, Transit, mining, cargo, trade, repair, refuel, gathering...literally everything. Its all broken and poorly designed. None of it is elegant or working correctly. There are no new player tutorials, you have to look on YouTube, but even those can become outdated in a few months. The PC requirements are relatively high to make the game playable. You have to install the game on an SSD because of its poor optimization. The game also uses a physics system that can kill your character just by walking up stairs or tripping over a box. Death also means that all the items on your character are left with your body. Which means it could take you 15 to 30 minutes to get back to it, assuming it doesn’t despawn. Many of the systems in place are unfinished. It may say the game is released but it is firmly in a pre-alpha state. If you want to try it, wait until a free-fly event, where you can try it for free. As someone who has spent over $5000, do not make the same mistake I did. The community is very good at getting you to invest in this project. Just wait and see. Expand

Star Citizen was 'pitched' as an extremely ambitious game that is no where close to fulfilling 5% of the promises Chris Roberts made about what the game was going to be and the features he said were going to be present.

The game is a train wreck I would say it plays like a pre alpha proof of concept or maybe a tech demo. It crashes all the time servers are desynced frame rates are bad even on high end systems and the AI is probably the worst I have ever seen and the game play is super shallow.

I'm gonna give it a 3 only because I think some people involved with the project probably actually tried to make a game but under Chris Roberts incompetence and nepotism this was impossible.

For people confused about how some people can score this a 10 and others score it so low there is a white knight cult that defends this game. They are anywhere from 1 - 40k sunk cost into this borderline ponzi scheme they don't really talk about that dirty little secret.

My suggestion to you a potential consumer of this game is wait for a free fly event and test the game for free yourself OR wait for the game to release and get into it then.

I initially got into Star Citizen back around 2015 by way of the multicrew demo and videos by Scott Manley. At the time, I had the following gripes which put me off of it for a while:

    - Low FPS
    - Character movement felt like controlling a clunky marionette
    - Your character was as durable as wet paper
    - Not a whole lot to do, the most interesting piece of content was the private investigation mission where you move about in a derelict space station. That was the highlight of it for me at that time.
    - Arena Commander was fun, but got dull quickly and using my Aurora wasn't exactly satisfying

I drifted away and in 2016 I was linked to a video from MandaloreGaming about Star Citizen and its controversies. Suffice to say, I stopped paying attention to the project after that.

In 2021, roughly after the release of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, I got interested in Star Citizen again after someone from the Elite Dangerous community discord talked about how much it had changed. I downloaded it again and gave it a try.

My experience is summed up as follows:
    - Character movement feels awkward and it's easy to get stuck on terrain, which can crash the game
    - Frames in the range of 10 to 20 on average, below 10 in ArcCorp
    - Randomly dying while walking or running around
    - Elevators bugging out, including on the 890 jump mission
    - Rocks I mined getting stuck under the level geometry and the mining vacuum (the laser that sucks up the gems) not picking up rocks randomly
    - Combat A.I at Kareah and in bunkers on Hurston not actually reacting to me. I was able to basically just waltz up to them.
    - Ship randomly exploding on the launchpad.
    - Crashing after an hour or two of playtime, consistently

Eventually, I think in late May/early June, I was linked to the quotes album on the Star Citizen Refunds subreddit on Reddit. After that, I was linked to Sunk Cost Galaxy by BinkyAtx on YouTube.

Without going on a tangent, I will simply say that if you want to try it out do so on a Free Fly weekend. Just don't give this project any more money, because around half a billion dollars and a decade later it is still just a tech demo.

I am an original backer. I have purchased beer and pizza over Skype (remember when that existed?) for the team and lost a lifetime of weight alongside Wingman, nearly a decade ago. These were good people.

The studios are not being allowed to make a game. By this time, they have made two or three games worth of engineering and content, but under the auspices of neurotic management with a long, checkered career of failure when they are leading projects more complex than early-90s, low-fidelity pixel shooters with simple plots and video cutscenes. Erin Roberts is the only leadership figure with successful complex releases while heading large studios under his belt, and he isn't even being allowed to do his own thing.

In some of the positive reviews, you will see acknowledgment of technical hurdles that are outside of the team's control. These hurdles are not outside of the control of the management of the studios, and you are kidding yourself if you believe them. From the way that these people drone on and on about alpha and experimentation and the creation of the most physically-fidelitous game universe ever, you would think that all games were heaping piles of engineering rubble that look worse than Fortnite and have less reliable physics simulation than Minecraft. Anyone under 45 who actually goes out and plays other modern games ought to know better. Knows better--or is deliberately trying to sign you on as yet another whale for the studio that has thusfar turned ten years and half a billion dollars into something that runs spectacularly worse than Mass Effect Andromeda did upon release while also being more visually out of date than most Bethesda games by this point.

Avoid being fooled. If you want to play Star Citizen, watch some streamers--stay away from YouTube videos that edit out the real experience. If you like what you see, go for it. Nobody is stopping you.

This is getting a 1 in memoriam of prior employees who were fantastic people, many of whom are still making kick-ass projects.

No accountability, or incentives given to financial backers. Chris Roberts (the lead designer and director) said that he wanted to make this game without the big publishers, so he could make his visionary online space sci-fi simulation. This has ended up being a massive red flag, especially when you look up his troubles with Microsoft and the legal troubles he was in with the development of Freelancer. Very worrisome development that clearly shows a lack of ownership from the game developer, and respect for the people backing this project. Is most likely a scam and something that will never reach a playable state as the devs continue to squander all of the money they have been given. Strange.

But if you're reading this, the Star Citizen saga is one worth reading up on - it's basically a vaporware game that started out with good intentions but feature creep and an insane fan base morphed the game into a decade plus long scam where the developers make more money from not releasing it than if they ever did. Because of the direction the game has taken, I said goodbye to SC as a potential player several years ago. At the same time, with more than $100, I am also one of the gullible who have participated in this orgy of money destruction.

After more than 10 years of development, a playable (i.e. largely bug-free) version is not in sight. Instead, the whole thing has turned into an orgy of selling virtual spaceships at real-money fantasy prices. A few years ago, even virtual properties on planets were considered for sale for real money.

A telling example of something going wrong with CGI and in the development of the game is the fact that only now, after more than ten years of development, has a localization of the game begun. Does that mean that only now is a concrete end goal being strived for? Or is it possibly a signal to the remaining SC believers that they can expect a playable version soon (i.e. in the next 10 years)?

In my estimation, however, the majority of the owners of these expensive, virtual spaceships will not be able to fly with them in their lifetimes. At least not in a playable version. Possibly the disappointed majority already rejects this game, also because of the concrete implementation of the game idea. Because there are also serious points of criticism about the implementation of the game idea from my point of view. Another showstopper after completion will also be the question of the running costs for this monster.

My current experience when re-testing is that this supposedly so great software doesn't even offer the possibility to specify the respective output screen in the options. This inevitably makes you wonder, "What have they been doing for 10 years!"

    Deutsch:

I've been following SC development for 4 years now, and while I can't recommend this game to people that simply want to play something and are not interested in tech and/or gaming development, I can't blatantly say it's a scam. They've made impressive progress on many fronts, and the scale they're working at is unparalleled.

The reason this game is funded, even if it didn't have a stellar progress of development, is because the targeted audience fiercely wants this idea to be born. There is currently no other idea on the market that fits the vision of SC.

The community is one of the most mature you'll get, and is friendly. Did Chris Roberts inflate the promises for the game? Probably yes, and as all things in life he will pay in some way if this is such.
Still, the developers gathered for this project, and the progress I've observed until now are indicators of potential success.

Will this MMORPG succeed? I don't know. But this is not a released game and this is not a scam.

The cities you can explore feel populated, busy and look absolutely goregous and immersive. Each city, space station and moon/planet is different and impressive. Your choice to be a bounty hunter, delivery boy. merc, transporter, medical assistance provider opens up your choice of who you want to be in this massive star system. Committing crimes and offences can see you head hunted by other players for the bounty of your capture and land you in the game's prison, which opens up another aspect of the game. There you can either wait out your sentence in the prison yard; mine for minerals and earn your way to shorten your sentence time; or attempt to break out, finding yourself in a desolate land but free nonetheless. The only real negatives i have about this game is the bugs that kill you for no justifiable reason and you can lose what items you have on your persons, if you're in space or on a foreign planet away from the main cities. That and the learning curve on how things are done is a bit lengthy but the community is so quick to answer your questions in the chat it's not really an issue.
Don't listen to the negatives about the game being a scam. Yes it's been in alpha for this long but the last 6 months have made leaps and bounds forward and there's a tonne of bugs fixed from when I started. (I used to die walking down a few steps or exiting my starship or dropping a package or walking through a doorway. The rage.....but all that's fixed.)
People who paid for and play the game will validate that this game is the most impressive and immersive space sim out there and it shows it's costs through content and variety from the clothing stores, starship stores to the interactive dialogue with NPCs as you progress with certain factions' missions/jobs. The more you play the more you discover what the game holds. Try it for yourself and judge for yourself.
Don't listen to all the skeptics.

The ability to interact with all objects, control panels, TV screens, food, weapons, tools etc... is incredible, each with multiple interactions in case you have them in your hand. The entire solar system is rendered in real time with a graphics that looks photorealistic, and once you enter the persistent universe / the game there will be no more loading for anything. It is possible to see planets millions of km away because they are physically present in the game at that distance they are not a skybox. It is possible to see the stations that orbit a planet from the surface of itself, also to see battles that happen in space always from the surface. This means that since the beginning of 2016, star citizen was the first and so far the only project to introduce a solar system rendered in real time that is not procedural, each planet is made properly by artists that make them unique and extremely detailed; and not even remotely comparable to small games like no man's sky and elite dangerous that make use of procedural systems and models for the creation and expansion of their world building which is the simplest methods for creating big open world sandboxes, an example is minecraft. However, this involves a repetition of the planets and places and above all constant loading of the textures over the distance in the game and instance loadings. Neither game supports the same systems that allow the star citizen engine (known as double-precision floating point for entities, instances and game physics) to move from one instance to another without any loading, such as switching from exploring the interior of a spaceship to first-person exploration in zero gravity in space to falling from space through the atmosphere on the surface of a planet. There is no game in the world that does what star citizen does in every respect. And despite being a game still in development, as of the writing of this review 08/05/2022, it is slowly making progress in improving performance and developing technologies that one day will solve network and desync problems, and allow to connect thousands of players on a single planet from all over the world. Nowadays most of the companies want to focus on free to play to easily earn by imitating already popular titles, and subsequently failing by making mediocre, inoriginal and incomplete games or videogame companies that exploit their past success to create identical games to the previous ones in which only the name on the cover changes. This leads to the fact that few companies want to commit to showing what current technology can do, star citizen and the people who are developing it is one of the few hopes that can prove what a new generation game really is and can do, that's why many believe in this project. This project is one of my favorites, indeed, no other game is as ambitious, the game has to date a hundred ships of all sizes, which can accommodate crews of 1 to 500 people. Dozens of planets and moons to explore. Several professions from the most calm like exploration to the most intense like bounty hunting where you have to hunt down real players who would have done illegal things, with some narrative part.
In addition, the game offers a mix between the piloting of ships and the FPS part (combat with weapons such as pistols, combat knives, shotguns, snipers).

In summary, this game is the most ambitious I've seen, offering countless professions, which will allow you not to be bored for a long time.
The bugs you may encounter in this Alpha are usually annoying the first time but avoidable afterwards, and are quickly corrected by the developers who listen to the community (which is rare for games of this magnitude).

This is a really neat game if you like space and don’t mind glitches. It’s extremely immersive and the gameplay is beautiful. Yes it’s not a finished game but the overall experience it gives more then makes up for it

Played Elite until Odyssey broke my game, tried Star Citizen to fill the spacesim crave, never looked back.

    Thanks Braben. I guess.

So i have been playing the game since 3.0 has come out. Put about £2000 into the game and personally its everyhing i have been looking for in a space game, While it is a buggy mess at the moment it has its moments where its not and during those times it really is a beautiful simulator, and the way its made allows for imagination with friends, make or be part of an org and join a communitySo i have been playing the game since 3.0 has come out. Or you can sit solo and go mining one evening when you just want some alone time.

The game and its community by all means isnt perfect but thats always the case with early access and it being an MMO, You will run into a lot of bugs, And there are some extremely toxic people, But there is almost always a work arround to the bugs, and if youre part of an org you can gang up against the toxic players and they soon shut up.

While my feelings about the monitisation is conflicted at best and the current state of the game, the biggest question is do i enjoy it, Most of the time yes i do, so heres my 1150 character review of the game.

And for the people who dont want to read through all that TLDR: Its a good game, If you find yourself a community to be a part of and if youre patient with bugs

Its in alpha, there will be bugs, you can play in free flight events "which i advise you to do before buying"
It's a very meticulous game play, you will struggle at first, best played with friends, the visuals and attention to detail is really slsomething else!

I personally think Star Citizen is incredible. It has a long way to go but once finished it'll be the most popular game ever created. People will say that they'll never finish star citizen because they make too much money from an unfinished game with little updates here and there to string people along, I don't believe that'll happen. In the past year they've accomplished so much in development, the server meshing alone is a game changer. Have faith..... Also it's a persistent universe and constantly being added too so it will never have an actual wrap date. Expand
