Probably the best multiplayer shooter of the last 10 years but sadly it is let down by some very puzzling decisions by inexperienced devs.

Somewhat lacking in content in comparison to its predecessor. I've been playing on and off since very early alphas, with just over 600 hours now. For every new feature every update up to 1.0 there's been an equally baffling bad design decision. Many missing/cancelled features since the original kickstarter, common requests from the community often go ignored, and even more features hilariously removed during the alpha/beta with absolutely no explanation. Many concessions and features were done to accommodate more casual players, which ended in the game practically appealing to neither casual players nor experienced SLs, awkwardly hovering halfway between Battlefield and Arma and struggling to get the playerbase of either. Still many bugs and stability issues since 1.0 release, and a community that sadly gets more toxic day by day. It does look like the developers are finally picking up steam, with some commonly requested features finally being implemented in v2.0, as well as general stability improvements. It's far from ideal, but it has the potential to get there, and I hope it does. Expand

Squad succeeds in this by keeping the mechanics as basic as they need to be without impacting gameplay towards a more arcade approach and forcing the players to co-operate towards victory, thus giving it a more hardcore feeling in the way the game is played. It's a multiplayer only game with no plot or story, nor any progression systems, there is only the battle. As the name on the games suggests, teamplay makes or breaks the match, and chances of winning that your team has, if your team is not communicating, you will have a bad time and lose, badly, this is not a fault, it is by design, to force players to work together, you either learn to play together or you won't last long in Squad and end up as statistics in the refund section. The game by itself is complete and is not lacking any main feature that would label it as an "incomplete release" altough support for the game is not over and Off World Industries claims that it will continue to support the game for a long time and add new content, everything that is necessary for the game to function is there and the game classes and vehicle gameplay are very well balanced. The game is not perfect by any mean, bugs exist, altough they are minor ones and none are a game breaking experience, the most disappointing feature of the game are the helicopter flight mechanic, while they are sufficient to assure that helicopters can impact the game by carrying our their mission, the controls feel weird and unnatural, while the developer has claimed that it intends to address the issue, at the time of writing this review, helicopter review has not seen any meaningful improvement outside of bug fixes. It is recomended that before buying this game interested players read the game description and requirements, game requirements include "a teamwork oriented mindset", even tho the game has an in-game chat, a microphone is also basically mandatory. This is like a Ps3 game.
For a 2020 game the graphics are dreadful and dull, it feels like a new MAG which was released on Ps3 and flopped. The gameplay is smooth enough, didn't feel any issues in that sector.
Maps seemed big enough to hold the player count.
Definitely a squad based game, if you go solo you won't have fun and will just die, stick to your team

Minor gripes are very rigid weapon load-outs and no customisation options. Overall if you work within a team you will have fun, if you don't it will be a short lived experience. With version 2 due out in the near future it can only improve further.

It all started to explode and I can barely hear my teammates in the midst of the shouting and bullets flying by. So much fun, few games give you that immersion.
Another plus side is that the devs are constantly improving the game with patches and expansions. They've got a solid roadmap for the 2021. A must buy, no doubt.

Squad is the most accessible realistic tactical shooter currently available. It's the middle ground between games like Insurgency Sandstorm and ARMA III.

    Engine and Graphics/Performance:

While Squad isn't the prettiest game out there, the game still looks very good for something that came from a rather small Canadian indie dev (Offworld industries). The game uses Epic Games Unreal Engine 4 which is the same engine that Insurgency Sandstorm, PUBG, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Gears of War 5 use. This means that even though the game is far from being highly optimized, it doesn't suffer from more unique (and sometimes frustrating) engine related issues that ARMA 3 suffers from (optimization, and input lag issues). The game also looks better or on par with Insurgency Sandstorm and PUBG, but in my opinion Squad has a more neutral and realistic look when compared to Insurgency the two games. One graphical shortcoming that Squad has is that it at times uses fairly poor looking textures. When it comes to performance I would say that Squad runs better than Insurgency Sandstorm, and on par, if not slightly better than PUBG. The game also runs way better than ARMA 3 and unsurprisingly Escape From Tarkov.

    Gameplay/Community:

Squad is the spiritual successor of the Battlefield based Project reality games, which means that it plays somewhat similarly. The gameplay is slower than Insurgency Sandstorm's but faster than ARMA 3. Squad is also more teamwork focussed than Insurgency, and occasionally ARMA 3. The gunplay is both unique, yet familiar since like Insurgency Sandstorm, your shots will be hit-scan for the first 50m and projectile after that, but you will be engaging your enemies at ranges similar to those in ARMA 3. Squad is also far more accessible when compared to ARMA 3 since you don't need to slather the game in mods and you don't have to spend hours, if not DAYS planning out operations. But it's less accessible than Insurgency Sandstorm since there's a larger learning curve. Another thing is that unlike in Insurgency, ARMA, or Escape From Tarkov you don't really get to customize your weapons. Instead, you get a selection of kits/roles that each come with different equipment. One gameplay aspect that Squad does really well is sound design. Whether it be 3D sound modelling or the quality of the sounds found within the game, everything has an outstanding level of polish. Another thing that I really like about this game is the use of VOIP, which isn't specific to Squad but is really still a really nice thing to have. Squad's community isn't perfect but is less toxic than a lot of other communities (CSGO, R6S, COD, etc). While there's a couple of bad eggs here and there, the majority of the community is actually pretty nice. Most players are more than willing to explain game mechanics to you, and are generally pretty chill. Experienced squad leaders will not hesitate to chew you out for messing up, but that's a part of their job. As a Squad Leader, you are responsible for commanding and managing your Squad (max 9 players), while also coordinating with other squads as well as the Commander who is in charge of commanding both their own squad as well as managing and commanding all of the other squads. Another aspect of Squad's gameplay is resource management. When you die and respond you use up tickets (military one-ups). If you want to build a new spawn point, then you need both construction resources(carried by vehicles) and a radio (carried by squad leader), it also takes a while for a squad to actually build up a spawn point. If you want to resupply ammo then you need to construct an ammo crate or pick up ammo from somebody with a riflemen/fighter class, both of which can only resupply a limited amount of ammo without somebody doing a supply run. Losing vehicles will also cause you to lose multiple tickets, which means that they have to be used sparingly.

Support: Offworld Industries has done an outstanding job of supporting the game both in content and fixes/ quality of life improvements. Squad now has 20 official maps and 7 playable factions (British army, The Canadian Armed forces, The Middle Eastern Alliance, The Russian Ground forces, The U.S. Army, Insurgents, and the Irregular Militia) as of December 2020, with 2 more factions (U.S marine corps, and the Australian Army) coming in the near future. This is exceptional for an indie game company.

It's supposed to be a realistic shooter where you don't see your teammates, but it's almost impossible to distinguish between opponents and teammates, which makes it so unbearably difficult, in my opinion, something like this doesn't necessarily have to be in a shooter game.
On top of that the game looks bad graphically even most PS2 games look much better in contrast to this junk pile.
The queues are the last ones, you usually just wait way too long although this differs from server to server.
I haven't had any contact with toxic players so far, so I'm calm at this point. The only thing I can say is that if it works, this game is a lot of fun, especially with friends.
You probably read it above I wouldn't recommend this game because
    1. It's not worth 40€ because of the points mentioned (if you end up liking it, get it on sale)
    2. Due to the server queues, bugs and the many glitches, it's just not fun (unless you want to sit in front of your PC for one to two hours and wait for something to happen)
But it's your decision I tell you better not get it and save the money

Earning a place among the greats, it can stand with square chin thrusting alongside thick-necked America’s Army and powerhouse ARMA. It feels like the true successor to AA, being everything the languid America’s Army: Proving Grounds should have been.

Wha’dis game ‘bout, Beat? A lack of lore provides limited context, but it’s safe to say it’s about World War 3. U sure, Beat? Canada is a playable faction. Readers, you know World Peace got flushed down the p-trap when even Canadians pick up rifles to pick off Americans. But there’s plenty SQaction to get excited about.

First, a word from Drill SGT HeadIn: All you new recruits, listen up! When you first launch SQ, you will not browse servers! Instead, haul your cherry-new behind to Basic where your will WILL be broken! You will be SHOT AT in the live-fire obstacle course! You will be SHOT in the live-fire obstacle course! You will bandage your own gunshot wounds from the live-fire obstacle course! You will no longer be flummoxed by the phrase “killed in a training exercise!” Then, since a jarhead is most serene while shooting, you will be calmly coached at the rifle range. Then! Since a jarhead is most annoyed when bullets are in boxes and not in bodies, you will be harangued while hauling ammo during Logistics Training! You will shoot-n-scoot against 6 Guantanamo guests flown in especially for your educational benefit! If you’re still alive after they’re dead, you will deploy C4 that will both destroy their base and install the mass grave needed for cleaning up! Get that shovel to work!

Dismissed, Sergeant! Readers, JAG is willing to ignore that little killing spree, Genevashmemeva; just sign your soul away on the dotted line. Congrats, all ur life r belong to SQ now. But fear not: SQlife is good!

SQ is rooted in a Battlefield mod, Project Reality, and deposits in the design room dustbin the standard BF formula that has been copypasta ad nauseam into shooters innumerable. There is a fresh take on many aspects of SQ’s structure. The Nice List starts with pacing.

The flow of that tutorial, from intense to slow then redlining at genocidal, is a microcosm of SQ’s typical pace: a frantic rush to build forward bases yielding to a lull, until enemy contact climaxes in an orgy of faithfully simulated gun-violence—a horrific chopper crash or three thrown in for good measure—cycling through it all again for the next objective. These vacillations are the result of large 50v50 teams creeping forward from one victory to the next on maps whose sizes average an order of magnitude larger than the thiccest Battlefield maps. This flow is maintained by the server if the population drops too low to support sensible play on full-size maps: the game-mode (aka Layer) for the next map in rotation changes to Skirmish, a layer that offers a slice of SQlife and features BF-sized cutouts of maps and adjusted rules. This server-side magic tends encourage the remaining players to stick around and not simply bail in search of bloodier bloodbaths.

The innovation continues with Fog of War. Special love given to FoW results in interesting effects on multiple systems:

    1) Foggy Tickets: the BF-birthed Tickets are here, with a distinction: FoW prevents you from knowing how many the enemy team has left. This ignorance kicks the endgame ferocity up to utterly insane levels of tension. You don’t GG or qq on 3 tickets; you fight to the last man! For all you know, 3 tickets is the margin of victory. Sit back on your 100 Ticket laurels? OPFOR might be leading by twice that amount. Objective captures provide morale-boosting batches of bonus tickets typically needed after costly offensives. BlackHawkDown-esque preciousness is bestowed on blue lives and adds a strategic imperative to the medic class, who prevent ticket decay by reviving fallen mates while preaching salvation for lost souls in voicechat like an Army Ranger in Mogadishu. Thus do SQ’s faithful healers embody the sacred medic motto: Smoke Grenades and Semper Fidelis.
    2) Foggy Flags: several Layers feature randomized OBJ hidden from one or both teams. In Destruction and Invasion, only the defenders know the layout of the OBJs—information the attackers have to pry from cold dead hands—and have bonus time before the match to prepare defenses accordingly. In Random Advance and Secure (RAAS) the flag lattice...

Seriously map design is pathetic, 8x8km maps with hundreds of kilometers of road... you could have a B-double truck travel within 200m of any location on nearly every map.... great terrains but completely designed to suit the map layers not a realistic environment...

Ticket bleed and tickets loss/gain for losing/gaining caps is a fail because once your team has been pushed back 1-2 caps passed centre cap its game over as you won't have anywhere near enough tickets to fight for those amazing comebacks... its just never happens and the devs just won't give up on this bad idea like all the other bad ideas... stubborn af.

Said gameplay being a blend of tactical first person shooter gameplay on top of light-to-moderate MILSIM gameplay, specifically ground infantry MILSIM and not much else. The weapons all sound and feel much like they do in the real world. If you pick up the H&K G3 chambered in 7.62mm NATO (.308) it drops bodies fast and kicks like a mule to a point of making it useless in full auto. Anyone who has ever fired a G3 or FAL in real life knows this is spot on. The sounds, the recoil, the rate of fire, the ballistics and penetration, the attachments, the handling.. it's all there and the gunplay is superbly accurately and sufficiently weighty. Likewise, movement as a foot soldier feels appropriate, you have stamina that drains and replenishes as you exhaust yourself / rest and even at peak speeds you move exactly like a soldier weighed down by 30-60lbs of gear would move.

When you reload, it takes a realistic amount of time and if you want to save time you have to discard your old mag outright. Also, yes, there is an actual magazine system. Depending on your gun (LMG / GPMG kits typically only have access to 3 belt boxes while other infantry classes typically have I believe 7 magazines in rotation) you'll have a different number of magazines that show how drained they are by changing colors. If you reload a half empty mag, that half empty mag goes back into your rotation and eventually will get used again.. still half empty. There is no arcade shooter 'ammo pool' system to where every lightning quick competition shooter level reload dumps the remaining rounds in your magazine back into the pool before replenishing. Also from time to time you'll find yourself having to replenish your supplies at designated locations within FOB's or your main base, if supplies permit.

The vehicles in this game are exactly where I feel they need to be. You have everything from tanks to APC's to logistics trucks to artillery trucks to helicopters and some more. You don't have gunships, jets or anything like that. I feel for the 50 vs. 50 medium sized battles Squad focuses on those would only serve to break the meta, so the role vehicles fill I feel is quite good right now. Having armor support when taking a point in Invasion can turn the tides, but likewise if you're in a tank don't feel too invincible because a few well placed rockets can end your day. Get used to making use of carriers to get to the frontlines from main base when people on your team inevitably fail to properly spread out and build FOB's as well.

I'll state the obvious, this game is based on Project Reality which was a mod for BF2 that had a laughably high amount of development hours put into it over the years. Thus, Squad does not measure up in terms of sheer scale or content, because of course it doesn't. The game has been in early access with a small team behind it for only a few years and based on that I'd say with how many different factions, weapons, maps and vehicles are currently in the game it's in a great place. The gunplay, moment to moment gameplay and visuals are all vastly superior to what you'll find in PR. The graphics may be lacking by some standards, but I quite like them and find the realistic aesthetic they portray works well.

Communication is a BIG part of this game, so if you don't have a mic or don't like using one in online games you'd be best off avoiding this game. Not only will you bring down your team and squad, but you'll be quite hindered yourself in multiple different ways. Also if you don't like high downtime between extreme moments of tension, much like in real combat, I'd also advise giving this game a pass. When I said this game accomplishes everything it sets out to do, I MEANT it, and it does so in such an uncompromising way that it'll shrug off people trying to play it like it's CoD or BF so hard that they feel scorned or like they played a bad game. So it's best you avoid Squad and games like it if that describes you.

There's so much more I could say about Squad. It certainly isn't a perfect game, but no masterpiece ever really was. The people expecting it to be 100% on par with PR content and scale wise are as naive and foolish as the people expecting this game to play just like BF.. and this also includes the people who expect AAA visuals and next gen graphics from a team this small. The framework / engine of this game has even been used to make other games like the WW1 Beyond the Wire and WW2 Post Scriptum games which I also think very highly of. If you want light MILSIM / tactical FPS gameplay with very low TTK all coming together with limited vehicular assault combined arms over fairly large maps containing medium scale battles encompassing lots of squad on squad engagements where playing your role and communicating win battles, Squad is it.

A slow game that needs the player to communicate and coordinate with the rest of the team. Great inmersion when everyone play it communicating and focusing on the obbjectives,

if you are a solo payer that likes to run around shooting at people you wont like it. Its not a game for everyone.

Squad is a game that portrays the realities of war in a pretty decent way,
this is not an ordinary fps where we run around the map and shoot. Tactics and communication are first and it doesn't matter how good we shoot, but how good positions we find, it's hard to find minuses
because the gameplay is realy good and the graphics are awesome.
I think it's one of the best coop games I've played

The best shooter on the market. I only wish it had character customization.

Best milsim game right now. Some gameplay problems on the gun firing mechanic which will be fixed with the soon coming infantry overhaul, and some others on the game performance, but otherwise it's nearly perfect.

Realistic, yet really enjoyable experience. Imagine going to a battle field and your brothers singing country road, then you land and you watch them die right in front of you, you hear gunshots, explosions and suddenly you realize that this game isn't that peaceful and you are in the middle of the war.

A hardcore team game that's fun when you work together, despite some unfriendly systems.

Realistic, yet extremely playable and enhanced with strategic depth: In the current shooter landscape Squad is one-of-a-kind.
