In an attempt to provide Alawar Entertainment with its own mascot Sprill: Aqua Adventures (2007) is about a fox named Sprill that is essentially a bubble shooter like Popcap’s Zuma Deluxe (2003) or Mumbo Jumbo’s Luxor (2005). I would say however it’s more like the former than the latter since gameplay occurs around Sprill rather than from the sides and above like Luxor. Sprill is a treasure hunter so he works inside a mechanical bubble. The player is tasked with clearing different coloured balls by matching at least three of the same colour in a row. You must act quickly to make sure the balls do not enter the gate otherwise a life is lost. Sprill also begins a level with three lives. If all three lives are lost the player can continue providing they have enough of a high score to deduct from. It becomes important then to get as high a score as possible on the finished levels. Progress is made along a map screen. As in most games of this type you get different power-ups to help you. Power-ups include the ability to freeze all balls on screen, rewind the line of balls to allow the player more time to clear them, a power-up that shoots lightning, one that unlocks all locked balls on screen, a power-up that explodes random balls, etc. Depending on how many stars achieved in-game power-ups between levels can be levelled up. Apart from Classic Mode there is also Swap Mode which is nearly the same thing except you grab a ball towards you (like a magnet) to help you match them. There are various in game achievements to unlock. Playing the game is fine until it crashes but still ends up saving your progress meaning the player is left in limbo where they can start from the level they next have to complete but can’t play it. No one wants to have to start from the beginning when they’re half way through these levels. The game isn’t anything special and unless Alawar have fixed some of these game breaking bugs I see no reason to bother playing it.

There’s some casual enjoyment to be had from Sprill: Aqua Adventures however it’s not the best game inspired by Puzz Loop (1998) or any more original. What cripples the game is its game breaking bugs meaning it’s next to impossible to finish the thing even if you do it in one sitting. Unless the bugs are ironed out in a future re-release this perhaps is one game best left buried at the bottom of the sea.
