The promise of Spore was that the adaptations one applied to a creature would perform similarly to adaptations in a natural scheme of evolution: long arms allow access to food up in trees, larger teeth mean better attacks, eyes on opposite sides of the skull allow for better surveillance of potential danger. These are the advantages of evolution: they confer a selective advantage of organisms to exist in an environment of heat, wind, light, dark, predators, etc... Sproe shows none of this intellectual promise, absolutely none. Instead, Spore is simply a combination of ersatz games with the addition creature design that confers nothing except aesthetic value. And all the talk of the limitless possibilities are meaningless: user-generated content is fine, but when the scope of that content is nothing more than skin-deep, who cares? When I first heard about Spore, I was thrilled to think someone would make a game truly based on adaptation. I expected physical traits to confer advantage, and thus to simulate a basic form of evolution. Did EA get frightened off due to the anachronistic and downright pathetic argument over some purely fabricated conflict between the Theory of Evolution and Judeo-Christian ethos? Have we seen yet another casualty of this moronic culture war tha's been drummed up by political operatives? Have we Americans completely forsaken any kind of intellectual advancement in our entertainment for fear that a consumer-bloc might refuse to consume? Spore offered a profound advancement in gaming: a real intelligent design produced by the gamer him/herself. It offered a real evolution of gaming, and an opportunity to educate through real fun. Instead, it is a shadow of a game, a waste of fifty dollars, and a complete supplication to a bottom line of profit rather than quality. I can't imagine who is truly responsible for the failures of this game, and others, that likely fall prey to the approvals necessary in corporate production, but surely someone is responsible for taking a good idea and dragging it through the mud. And as for all the gaming magazines, subsidized by manufacturer advertising, the incestuous relationship is obvious: there is little or no objective review of the gaming industry. Reviewers are clearly reluctant to criticize a major flop from a big company. Between a production company that clearly missed the boat and reviewers blinded by proximity to their subject, it would seem that everyone dropped the ball on Spore. My only hope is that Mr. Wright, who has shown extraordinary genius in his previous ventures, will rise to the occasion and offer an expansion pack (which ought to be free, cause this thing isn't worth ten bucks, much less fifty), that will make this game the smart product is ought to have been. Tries to do everything and ends up doing nothing particularly well. Modifying the creature is academic as the game just glosses over your mods and lumps your creature into its own general categories. The game seems to rush you to the space age, but once you get there the game deteriorates into a frustrating series of zooms in and out of planets and star systems.

Additionally, the explanation for the stages I found to be insufficient for casual gamers (i.e. my girlfriend), and the fact you only get one game save means that it is indeed possible to save the game at the verge of destruction and be forced to start over from scratch. Thats not very casual friendly. Once you buy the game and realize that there isn't much to it at all, you'll probably want to sell it. Then something starts to make sense. You cannot return this game. You cannot give it to someone else (it's tied to your EA account), and you can only install it 3 times, with uninstalling it NOT giving you back an install. Honestly, who wants to join me in a class action lawsuit, no where on this box does it state that limitation. Expand

A great game in all stages. Some stages could have been extended but that is not a significant issue. The DRM is not really a problem, you can install the game three times and then if you want to install again you need to call EA. I don't think it will stop pirating, but it's no reason to give it a zero.

It gets really repetitive and boring very quickly. There seemed to be a lot of replayability, but in reality, it's just the same thing over and over again. At least with SimCity, you could build your city in different ways, but there is only one path in this game, really... eat plants or meat, kill or impress other creatures, play music for or kill other tribes, etc. I can't believe how much the critics are wrong on this issue. It is obvious they are bought off by EA. My 6 year old nephew who has been playing Age of Empires (the original!) got bored with how easy SPORE was. Style, this is where the game is yes unique, but it seems to be very limited. Each of the stages you go through you seem to have resources everywhere and are easily accessible. It is true that you have many different objects you can place on your creature but only certain ones can be matched to be visually pleasing. If you go far too complicated some of the motions your creature will do look terrible and messy. Yes its nice we can design a bunch of things throughout the world. Your limited by the amount of what you do with it. Sure you can through fifty spikey balls on your face but it comes off looking cluttered. I gave this game a 6 because the stages do get boring even after you have made 3 - 4 different creatures. It just appears to be the same old song and dance, or song and attack strategy. But! As a package deal, Spore appeals to the kind of gamer who enjoys Sim City and related games. It has a "cool" factor that is tough to quantify. It's about customization more than anything else. Maxis makes no bones about it -- all the stuff leading up to the space stage is basically a fun, brief, unlocking process. Space stage is the bulk of the game and if you don't enjoy space trading games, you will not enjoy Spore. Unless... you love creating, exploring, and sharing your creations with others. The online sharing of user generated content isn't really new, but it's a first for a game of this kind. You are "locked in" to whatever RTS and MMO games decide you should have, unless you want to shell out for expansion packs. Spore effectively lets you make the expansion packs. If you think you should be getting paid to do that... try getting a job as a game designer. :P If EA will enter the 21st century and get rid of the limited activations, which people will just crack anyway, maybe people will focus on the good qualities of the game itself instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water. Great Toy! That's what most people do not get about this piece of interactive entertainment - it's more of a toy to play with rather than a game in the traditional sense with a concrete narrative and set of rules and storylines to follow. Rather, it is to be enjoyed in direct relation to your own level of creativity and ability to intelligently manipulate the tools given to you.

The first 4 stages honestly feel like a series of mini-games that are added on for the purpose of adding more than just the space stage. The cell stage is fantastic.... for the 30 minutes it will take you to have done and seen everything it has to offer, after which you are essentially "done" there. Creature mode fares a bit better, lasting a bit longer.... but ultimately you soon learn that you've done all there really is to do in the first 5 minutes, which is to say meet another tribe, befriend or extinct them, then make a new version of your creature. Get ready to repeat that about 20 times. Tribal mode has the depth and richness traditionally associated with mini-games in other games, and really offers nothing not done far better in other games. Civilisation is really the same : done better elsewhere. Space, which if we're being honest the real game, is curious. It more or less totally voids the creative actions of the previous stages, as the only time your species is seen is on the communication screen when you talk to them, or as tiny dots in your colonies. The tanks, boats and planes from the civ stage, that you probably spent more time designing than playing the actual stage, are essentially wasted as you'll only see the old ones hanging around on your home planet, which you will almost never visit. The learning curve takes a suddeny spike here, with the game going from ridiculously easy to suddenly incomprehensible, but somehow Will Wright manages a kind of dark alchemy and achieves the seemingly impossible task of going from mouse-smashingly hard when you start to pathetically easy once you know what's going on. Ultimately your urge to make random things will soon burn itself out and you will be left profoundly unsatisfied. Expand

For the past few years, we have been dreaming about free-form liberty games, in which anything is possible and there is a dynamic story. First, it was the Sims and then GTA, and no better than ever its SPORE, Welcome to the future of gaming.

Best game of the year. I love Will's design. Maxis has made the ultimate software toy. All kinds of tings to do and try in this game. Just what I love!

Whilst Spore doesn't please all hardcore gamers, especially in the RTS and First person eater genre's, it still gets the job done for being what a game should ultimately be.. FUN!

You can create a lot and do a little. Gameplay is repetitive and boring. Creation does not impact your creature behavior thoroughly. The evolution concept is not really implemented. Each phase is poorer than similar one in other game. The creative stuff os the only interesting part of the game. It's a sandbox with non challenge.

Biggest letdown since years. Playing games since C64. But Spore is only a combination of 5 simple minigames.

What a fucking dissapointment. They watered the game down like hell just to make it more "accessible" to all the retards with an attention span of 1 nano second, and so they can release 15 expansions for full retail price over the next 5 years or so like they did with the sims 2. Fuck EA. Fuck them up their fucking capitalist asses.

More less fun than a SimCity or The Sims. The gameplay is pretty light and has been sacrificed for god damned "casual-gaming". The only cool stuffs are editors and the whole sharing system. SimCreation instead ? Will Wright made better games before.

Good game, but you can't actually buy it. Only rent it. That's because you can only install it 3 times. After that your game is useless. fundamentally disappointing! 5 shallow mini-games threaded together.... Poor and simplistic game play. Not what one would expect from the legend that is Will Wright

Ground-breaking in terms of user generated content appearing randomly in your game. Excellent creator modes, but slightly shallow gameplay for the other parts of the game.

This review is made by independent customer and lets you know whats going on if you are wondering about buying the game. First of all the game itself is different product that was promised. Years back the demos showed totally different game with rich in content and real challenge. That all has been changed now and there is absolutely no fun left in game. Q: What did they change and why? A: They took out vital gameplay aspects of the game so they can release them later on in multiple expansion packs. This ensures your money will be leeched years to come, not just one time theft. Even the official Spore trailer shows content that does not exist in the current game! The content was changed to appeal more "casual" gamer base thus giving more profit and less quality in return. This fact has been admitted by the developers themselves. Think of it as the Sims game without being able to socialize with other sims before buying expansion pack for it. Q: What is this securom DRM and how it works? A: Securom is a digital rights manager spyware that installs to your computer when you install EA products. It bypasses your normal administrator priviledges and is very hard if impossible to remove from your system. It gathers information about your computer activity and sends it forward, in most countries, that is considered spying which not even police is allowed to do. It can cause software conflicts, unstability in windows enviroment and can slow your PC down. The most important thing is that it limits your installations to 3. So you are not buying the game, you are renting the game for 3 installs. After 3 istalls, you are required to call by phone to have it reactivated. These calls are not toll free, to ensure you are paying for the game even after the purchase. It is not certain aswell that you can get your game reactivated. There has been cases in EA's earlier game Mass Effect which uses the same DRM that people have been unable to get the game reactivated because they are thought to be pirates. Yes, you have to be able to ensure the staff on the phone that you have not pirated the game you purchased. In some countries, the phone number provided in the manual does not even exist! There is no notification of DRM spyware in the box so people cannot be informed about it before they make their purchase. Q: Is the game worth buying? Is it fun to play? A: NO and NO. The game is so simple and uninspiring only children find it fun and challenging. But in later stages even them can find the game to be very frustrating and unrewarding. There is no problem solving, no strategy or any thrill whatsoever. During the course of your creatures journey, you are reduced to pressing one to four buttons or doing simple tasks repeatedly to proceed. Some people have referred the game as a tool designed to help autistic children. The best part of the game is the editors that let you create various creatures, buildings and vehicles. Combined with fascinating ambient background music and well made graphics, the potential is for Spore to be great game is there. Sadly not any of that potential reached the final product. Many customers feel their money was cheated and are now struggling to return their opened game box back to the store. Some customers refuse to have their computer infected with spyware only to play a game they purchased. Some cant believe their game stopped working after 3 installs and on the phone they were being treated as pirates. The promises made before launch and the product delivered just do not match up. This game is a one star game with a word GREED all over it. Expand

Game kinda totally disappoints, and i don't mean the DRM. I'll let that completely aside. There is no "evolution" in this game. Not one tiny bit. Spore is a combination from 5 minigames, whithout any deeper gameplay, but hold together via a nice Creature-/Vehicle-/Building-Editor. And while the Space Stage is your big sandbox endgame, itself maybe disappoints the most. It is a Game kinda totally disappoints, and i don't mean the DRM. I'll let that completely aside. And while the Space Stage is your big sandbox endgame, itself maybe disappoints the most. It is a extremly watered down, ultralight, lowcarb version of 4X Space games like Galactic Civillization. With the additon of some planetary editing, sims style. The fact that you have only one spaceship, and need to be present at any planet where you want to even look up something, is the worst idea ever brought up by a game developer. Add to that, that you constatly have pirate raids and bio-ecological desasters, you actually have no time to explore and/or sandbox/edit your planets. It ends with you scrolling your mousewheel in and out of stars/planets, flying your spaceship with extremely crappy controls (and especially aiming), and constantly fighting off pirates and eco disasters. No depth evolved anywhere. This game is not casual-friendly, this game is a joke. If you bought the Creature Editor, you alreday got the funpart, the rest is just a fraud to get the other 50 bucks outta your pocket. And that is the result of a seven year developement? I'm sorry, but you failed, Mr. Wright. Reading all the hype and previews, i thought this will be a game about you creating creatures, and looking how they evolve, and if they will even survive. But Spore is far, far away from that. Spore is something else. And i don't like that. I have to admit, i played it the first few hours, and felt fun. But all that time, i kinda was waiting for the "evolution" thing. And after getting from phase to phase, i started to realize, that there is none. It doesn't even matter how you design your creature. You can give it 10 legs and one arm behind the head, without ears and a nose, and in spite of all that it will still reach space stage. Too bad. As a Sim City enthusiast, i really had hopes in Will Wrigth's new game. I really looked forward for something (r)evolutionary. But what came out, is some kind of kids game, even worse then The Sims. How to design a game that spans from swimming in a drop of water to ruling the galaxy? Will Wright knows how: as simple as possible. Spore deserves success on "The Sims" scale. [Sept 2008]
  2. Spore's triumph is painfully ironic. By setting out to instill a sense of wonderment at creation and the majesty of the universe, it's shown us that it's actually a lot more interesting to sit here at our computers and explore the contents of each other's brains. [October 2008, p.64]

Spore manages quite some feats – it's accessible for casual gamers, but at the same time so real and dynamic, able to offer hardcore gamers a demanding experience and, obviously, a more appealing one than in "The Sims".
