Hazelight has nailed it once again with Split Fiction. I was hooked on the adventure from start to finish, full of fun, creative and impactful moments, all with impressive polish. Each new idea presented left me excited to continue and discover how far the game would go, always accompanied by impeccable graphics and sound. Split Fiction will stay with me for a long time, being one of those unique experiences that remind me why I love video games so much.

You won't find a more imaginative cooperative game like Split Fiction. It’s a crown jewel of Hazelight Studios' portfolio, boasting immense creativity and love put into every single set piece, mini-game, or location.

Split Fiction is a good game, even a very good one - it's full of quality platforming challenges and great boss battles, but above all this stands a shallow and uninspired storyline that manages to weigh down the overall experience. Still, with the right friend, it's a lovable and terribly fun experience, which will undoubtedly put a smile on your face.

Ultimately all of its component parts come together to make a game that needs to be played primarily because of how it feels. How it feels to play and how it feels to discover the bits of joy both big and small. There's no other way to do it justice.

Split Fiction feels more like a 9-hour movie than a true co-op game. Interaction is limited, and the multiplayer experience is among the worst. Compared to its predecessors, it lacks depth and creativity, making it repetitive. While its PC optimization is solid, it ends up being a forgettable game rather than a truly remarkable experience.

Split Fiction has set a new benchmark for cooperative games by crafting an imaginative world and innovative gameplay that seamlessly engages two players. By examining the relationship between AI and creativity, and being supported by cutting-edge technology, the game underscores its exceptional quality and appeal.

Hazelight Studios sets a new benchmark for co-op games with Split Fiction. Its dynamic split-screen cinematography and genre-blending gameplay keep things constantly engaging. For those who resonate with the creative struggles highlighted in the age of AI, the story may strike an even deeper chord.

Hazelight Studios has outdone itself with Split Fiction by innovating and expanding upon its earlier work. Mio and Zoe’s worlds are fully realized locales that pay loving homage to their real-life inspirations, and the optional Side Stories prompt many a smile. It's an impactful look at the creative writing process and an essential co-op adventure.

Split Fiction starts strong and gets better and better, only to leads to an unexpectedly profound story. Hazelight's new co-op game shines with terrific, inventive gameplay, and really ups the ante in an epic finale.

Split Fiction feels like the culmination of what Josef Fares and Hazelight Studios’ team have learned since making Brothers and A Way Out. Both were solid games, and It Takes Two’s success was our first glimpse at what the studio was truly capable of. Split Fiction is everything I could ever ask from a cooperative game and more, easily making it another solid game of the year contender. I wish I could go on about each level and its intricacies since I could easily ramble on numerous incredible moments for a while. This is one of those games that thrives on surprising you at every corner, and hearing my friend’s reactions was just as fulfilling as experiencing my own.

Regardless of whether you want to play with someone else in-person or online, Split Fiction is well worth your time. It’s an excellent co-op adventure, and it’s easy to imagine the game garnering the same kind of following – and accolades – as It Takes Two.

Hazelight Studios has once again outdone itself, creating something truly remarkable with Split Fiction. It's bigger, bolder, and even more exhilarating than It Takes Two. Brimming with some of the most wildly inventive ideas in action-adventure gaming, Split Fiction delivers breathtaking set pieces and unforgettable level design. Every moment is a testament to the magic of co-op gameplay as two players navigate this extraordinary journey together - just as they did four years ago, but now on an even grander scale.

Split Fiction is a stunning and emotional buddy co-op adventure that kept us fully invested until the very end. Jumping between Zoe and Mio's different worlds was executed flawlessly, with unique gameplay, storylines, and details for every chapter. It's also the first of Hazelight's games to feature cross platform play, which performed superbly. This is how co-op games should be.

Split Fiction stands out as an exceptional cooperative experience, true to the promise of a creator who has never lacked confidence in his project, and rightly so. If the plot remains relatively classic, it is really only there to serve a gameplay that reveals remarkable inventiveness and intensity. Hazelight manages to constantly renew the experience, offering a multitude of situations with crazy ideas and memorable sequences. The game shines with its frenetic pace, its lack of gameplay loop and its ability to surprise the player until the end. Split Fiction is a true technical and artistic tour de force, where the dazzling artistic direction and ingenious level design combine to offer a very great, fun and immersive spectacle.

Split Fiction could very well be the best cooperative game I've ever played. At the very least, I firmly believe it sets a new standard for the genre. And yet, it's more than that. Split Fiction is a love letter to creativity--to stories, games, and the people who make them. It is funny, dark, joyous, childish, tender, cheesy, thrilling, and remarkable. All this combined with gorgeous environments, fantastic gameplay, and sheer spectacle make Hazelight Studio's newest release an early contender for the best game of 2025.

Split Fiction, just like Hazelight's projects before it, will not only have you belly-laughing throughout the experience, reminiscing about games, movies and literature the game regularly reminds you of, but it’ll also tug at your heartstrings and have you wiping tears from your eyes. The game's biggest victory is that it reminds you that endeavours as wonderful as Split Fiction (and those that it pays homage to) were created by the passion, devotion, and authentic experiences of humans such as Zoe and Mio, and the team over at Hazelight — not idea-extracting machines trained solely for profit off the human ingenuity that's so rawly at the beating heart of Split Fiction.

Split Fiction is fantastic. The story and characters are great thanks to the nuance sprinkled throughout to give everything and everyone some unexpected depth. The constant switching of various genres keeps the game fresh, since none of the tales linger for too long, and the same can be said for the various gameplay additions in conjunction with the solid platforming. Combined with the cross-platform play and accessibility features to ensure that everyone can get through the title, the only reason to not pick up Split Fiction is if you despise co-op play. For everyone else, grab this early contender for "Best Of" lists for 2025.

Slightly less memorable than It Takes Two, Split Fiction is still one of the best cooperative games around. With its fast-paced gameplay ideas and two themes that follow on perfectly from each other, right through to its astonishing finale, Hazelight once again proves that they are the kings of 2 player games with this new title.

Split Fiction offers up a meticulously crafted playground, but it’s disappointing that the framework around it feels like it was fashioned by the 10-year-olds who’d play there.

Hazelight has done it again! Split Fiction is an absolute masterclass and a big contender for Game of the Year. The gameplay variety in the coop adventure tops even the amazing It Takes Two and the story delivers as well. Graphics, audio and gameplay fit together perfectly, and it will be hard to push Split Fiction from the throne.

In case anyone had any doubts, Split Fiction is proof that It Takes Two was not a random stroke of luck. Hazelight’s new game is every bit as crazy as the 2021 Game of the Year, and although this year the competition is going to be fierce, Split Fiction might be a serious contender for the title as well.

Split Fiction is, at its heart, a celebration about how wonderful, imaginative and downright clever videogames can be when they choose to embrace what they are - an art form that thrives on interactivity, creativity, and boundless possibility. Hazelight have proven that once again, when it comes to building distinct experiences that blend storytelling, mechanics, and player agency - they have no equal. Spectacular.

While Split Fiction doesn't necessarily break new ground, it's an entertaining ride and delivers a polished co-operative experience with an infectious level of enthusiasm. As the end credits rolled, my colleague and I agreed that we wouldn't have minded at all if the game had been extended by several more hours. It's to the game's credit that it never threatened to outstay its welcome, and felt fresh throughout.

Split Fiction is one of the best narrative co-op games available. Hazelight once again proved that they are the masters of the genre by eliminating virtually all the shortcomings of their previous game, It Takes Two. At the same time, the developers have managed not to lose their distinctive style, delivering a title that is fun, at times challenging and above all, bursting with creativity.

Split Fiction is another jewel in Hazelight Studio’s ever-growing crown of co-op adventures. This game constantly introduces new mechanics that keep the gameplay fresh, and each new story feels unique, despite continually returning to the same two genres. There are random difficulty spikes that can easily trip up inexperienced players and lead to frustration, but this was some of the most fast-paced, light-hearted fun I’ve had in a long time.

Split Fiction is a wildly imaginative co-op adventure that thrives on unpredictability. Hazelight Studios masterfully blends platforming, puzzles, and genre shifts into a thrilling yet sometimes overwhelming experience. While its narrative structure can feel disjointed, the inventive gameplay and forced collaboration make it a must-play for co-op fans.

My partner and I didn't want to let go of the controller, and if you go to it with a bit of grief for an industry that is sometimes rightly accused of a lack of creativity, this is the antidote you needed. [Recommended]
  2. Story aside, I liked the bits where it was clearly taking a breather to let you screw each other in various ways. Or have a deathmatch. The parts where it winked at you: "We're presenting this as a trust exercise but it's actually so you can let your mate's head bounce off the carpet and cackle about it".
