Spiritfarer excels in every genre it dips its toes in. It’s a joy to see what’s in every corner of the game’s ocean, explore every nook and cranny of the various islands, and play various minigames all while managing your ship and making sure your passengers are happy before you see them off. It’ll make you laugh, cry, and feel terrified all at the same time. It’s one of those games that, after finishing, you immediately want to play again.

Spiritfarer is a wonderful take on the management sim. It creates a profoundly fulfilling loop by rewarding character interaction far more than micromanagement. The stellar production values and writing balance the game's realistic, death-positive message with abundant empathy. Thunder Lotus has really hit the nail on the head with Spiritfarer, achieving its artistic goal with simplicity, style and remarkably few flaws.

Spiritfarer is a beautiful and unique adventure about death. It might not be revolutionary gameplay-wise, but the way it combines the game mechanics with the storytelling is outstanding.

In representing the moment of passing away, however, it enhances life, creating a cycle of small daily actions that describe days of joy and carefree nature.

Spiritfarer loses itself in so much tiresome back-and-forth, ladling on delightful incidental details in the hope that you won't notice that each character's story has become little more than an extended shopping list. [Issue#350, p.96]

Expand

I has been advertised as a game about learning how to say goodbye, but the thing was, I had no problem with letting go of any of the characters. Letting go of the people you've grown to love is a complicated process, which is hard to get into, when the game doesn't let you go through any of the steps, like for example, whether you want to keep their room as a commemorative keepsake, or get rid of it with a heavy heart, so other spirits have more space for their needs (though I appreciate the game's effort to presenting death without too much pathos).
What instead appeared to me, is how I actually liked being the spiritfarer, as it was a truly relaxing job. Caring for plants, knitting materials, cooking food, making people happy with hugs. The game's a mixture of various things, there was plenty to do, so it was an entertaining, yet breathe-easy experience. For some time, after a stressful day, Spiritfarer was my go-to when I needed some escape. And I would suggest to treat it as such - a good escapism game.

    + escapism from daily struggles
    + looks and sounds great
+ managing the boat is quite fun
    + touching and poetic ending

    - coming to terms with death has much more potential than this game is showing
    - I couldn't really bond with the characters, their story-telling wasn't that interesting

It has a lack of polish, (even if it does look pretty), where animations don't fit together fluidly and npcs will get stuck, or in rare cases even phase through the ground. There is an aspect of padding, animations take an unnecessary amount of time and can't be sped up. You'll oftentimes find yourself uncomfortably waiting for the next event to occur. There is a distinct lack of automation for repetitive mundane tasks on the boat, so you manually supply yourself with resources using the exact same methods you used 30 hours ago with little variation. Finally, there is a distinct lack of text-skipping options, so you'll find yourself talking to random npcs who rattle on and on quite often. All these negative aspects make it sound like I dislike this game, but despite its flaws I would still definitely recommend it. Amassing a little town of animal spirits on your boat is really a delightful experience, and listening to their stories and how they tie into a broader narrative of the nature of moving on, both in a literal and metaphorical sense, is quite fascinating. The characters are memorable and the story is well put together, being the main reason for my recommendation. The story itself is certainly predictable, but it's worth seeing to the end just for its execution. The game is still definitely too long though, should have been 30 hours tops. Under a simple, almost childish presentation, is hidden a deep story, with defying puzzles, crafting, relationship building, friendships development.
The game has so much to do, that you could put it side-by-side with any Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley but it's much more fresh in a way that is hard to find the right category for it. A mix between life simulation, relationship building, strategy, rpg crafting, platformer, action. But at the end instead of a big blob of nothing you are served with a great gaming experience.
Spiritfarer is one of this rare games that leaves you empty once you finish, just like only a good book can do.
