    While it definitely isn’t GOTY material, it’s a solid game that’s worth playing and offers strong value for money. As long as you don’t mind bad voice acting and a limited score.

    So while nothing substantial has been added to the SpellForce cauldron, the sequel's focus on smaller battles and quality questing has been refined, and the end result is a palatable expansion pack. With dragons.

    The first expansion for Spell Force 2 which is added in the gold edition and works also as standalone game. It improves aspects of the mainThe first expansion for Spell Force 2 which is added in the gold edition and works also as standalone game. It improves aspects of the main game and is long enough to be valued as a true new game. Lets start with an overview and explanations. It is a mixture of real time strategy (RTS) and role playing game (RPG). It was the unique concept of the Spellforce franchise and I think it works really well. To give you a better explanation I will describe both parts. RPG part: Your created main character and party level up and learn abilities like in an RPG. There are some branches for abilities and you should plan ahead as you cant learn all abilities. The expansion added a lot of new abilities including a Shaikan branch of abilities that allow you to summon helpers. Level cap is again 30 as you cant get enough experience to reach level 31 by design (far beyond the experience you can archive!). Your party members are always a bit behind your level (max level is 24). There are tons of weapons and equipment to find or buy from merchants. Added are now set items that give additional bonuses the more parts you equipped. Most items have restrictions to learned abilities and / or a minimum level. For example you cant use plate armor or longbows without the corresponding ability. There are lot of side quest for bonus experience or useful items. Some are continuous through the game (follow up quests) or can only be completed later in the game. RTS part: You are in control of a faction, harvest resources, building structures and recruiting / producing units. There are 3 resources with stone, silver and lenya that are limited per map. Your workers are used to harvest them and build buildings. Here comes the new part. Now exists a Shaikan faction with unique units you play most of the game with. What makes them special is that unlike other factions you can develop or upgrade your units in two ways (mutual exclusive). For example archers can use fire arrows with higher range or fire 3 arrows with one shot. You get not access to all units and buildings immediately and must unlock some by progressing trough the story. As you level up your units do too but not to the same level (Will be at an overall lower level than your main character and party). So far for this. While your party is stronger than the other units they are not overpowered and will fall to groups of enemies or use of poor strategies except you outlevel them by far. Gameplay wise they improved. The variety of the missions is superior to the main game. I was impressed by this. Also the sidequests are more memorable and the one where I do my judgment of people is quite memorable as there are no easy answers (Still doubt my final decision and would also if I chose the opposite way). There are also party member related quest. For the story it helps knowing the main game and characters as some knowledge helps and there will be familiar faces. The story starts with something you already encountered during the main game. The magic portals that connect the islands are stopping to work. This is a catastrophe as see travel is to dangerous to be reliable and resources getting scare. An all out war seems unavoidable. Meanwhile your main character is in an assignment as Shaikan mercenary. After the first missions you are on your journey to learn more about a new faction that wants to fix the portal in exchange for power and search for your mentor the hero of the main game. The story is really good for an expansion and deals with a lot of serious themes. It is memorable and because it is a bit shorter than the main game works well (Not stretched or feels not so). The graphics and soundtrack were excellent for its time and aged pretty well (I freely admit that I is nothing compared to new games). So far so good. There are a few downsides. First installing the expansion or having the gold edition (included there) causes a bug in the main game! In the penultimate map of the main game there is a puzzle. From there on the camera strikes when you try to solve it. You can reach the final map but going anywhere else before freezes the camera in a position that prevents you from continuing. In this expansion there is a map where enemies always respawn and you have to walk through them really often, This got annoying to the point you curse this idea with passion. Other than that the game sometimes freeze when I was reloading a save from inside the missions (Never happened from the main menu). Overall this was a great expansion which is proven by the fact that I want some features in the main game. Easily worth playing if you like this mixture of RPG and RTS.… Full Review »
