I'm only 3 hours into the game, and so far it's outstanding. The reason why I'm writing a review already is the sheer amount of unfair reviews spreading outright falsities about the game. One user complained about the stick controls being to sensitive, even though you can switch to d-pad controls, and the stick controls feel pretty much the same as in any other 2D platformer. One user complained about the stick controls being to sensitive, even though you can switch to d-pad controls, and the stick controls feel pretty much the same as in any other 2D platformer. Another user complained that the game locks you into the second area until you've cleared it, which is total BS, because you can fast travel to any previously visited checkpoint at any time. Loads of people (including critics) are complaining about the high difficulty... Sheesh, is it that time again? The game is not -THAT- hard (so far), it has 3 difficulty settings, what else do you want? It's nowhere near as difficult as Sekiro, for example. The bosses may appear unbeatable at first, but once you've learned their patterns they become reasonably easy.
Another common complaint was that the game has "tons of lost inputs". This has happened to me very rarely and so far hasn't been an issue at all, let alone one that justifies such harsh reviews.

All in all, if you ignore the whining of a bunch of easily frustrated kiddies, you're left with a rock-solid game here, that brings you right back to the good old days of Secret of Mana and the likes... Which even Square Enix has failed to do with their recent Secret of Mana / Trials of Mana releases. Will this one be as fondly remembered as Hollow Knight or Cave Story? Probably not, and it's too early for me to tell, but I can say with confidence that the game deserves a lot better reviews than it's receiving.

    PROS
-Great gameplay, fun with the capital F
-enemies are tenacious, they wont leave you alove -enjoyable music but never memorable -beautiful pixel art -lot of things to do and secrets to find -it last a lot for a metroidvania -finally a metroidvania that doesnt rely its story on lore and abstract things CONS -messy and unfinished story (I guess it will continue in the sequel)

-except for the first 3 areas, to easy after the patch expecialy the bosses (choose hard mode or you will have 0 challenge)
-not buggy but had a single one that made me restart a completed mission, was very annoying

Souldiers offers good looking 2D graphics with difficult, but non simplistic combat involving a good bunch of different mechanics for attacking as well as defending, and movement. The maps are large although there is still some sense of linearity, as you will end up outleveling some things significantly and usually have a main objective to work towards in a given direction. The maps are large although there is still some sense of linearity, as you will end up outleveling some things significantly and usually have a main objective to work towards in a given direction. However the game maintains a good balance of this with stats increase being small enough and the number of side quests and secrets being rather plentiful so that you still have quite some choice with where to go next and what to do, without running into enemies that would be too easy or too hard for your character.

Expect to die when you are unaware of new enemy mechanics, as the game is nicely design to still be challenging when you know how things work. It gives difficulty even when using low number of enemies, which act with some amount of unpredictability and damage potential. I expect it has a good replayability. It is playable in the highest difficulty mode from the get go.

Sometimes, it may take a bit long to get something done, and some soundtrack may sound a little repetitive. It presents itself slightly like a game for kids, but it is difficult. You will notice that the achievements seem to be achieved by a small % of the players compared to other similar games. I think I would like even more openness with even less stat/power increase, and perhaps a more meaningful consequence to death. Good game.

Souldiers certainly won't be to everyone's taste, due to its lackluster plot and technical hiccups, but it's definitely one to check out if you are into Metroidvania or Souls-like games.

Souldiers manages to marry the chibi aesthetic with challenging gameplay and an interesting combat system. Some minor mishaps in handling and pacing detract from the overall experience, but it's still an honest solution.

Souldiers is a must-play title for anyone who loves Metroidvania-style games with RPG and platforming elements thrown in. Despite a few hiccups at launch, v1.1.1 addresses all the issues, making this gorgeous-looking and -sounding game one you shouldn’t miss!
