May 1, 2025One of the most disappointing mixed bags of 2025, there are so many cool ideas and mechanics in Greco-Roman-flavoured metroidvania Somber Echoes, but the way they were implemented kind of ruins what could be something truly fantastic. An intriguing story that’s badly told, neat platforming mechanics that are needlessly strict, exploration that makes you want to find it all and at the same time has you thinking if it’s worth the trouble, and, finally, combat that is great...but only when everything works the way it is supposed to. Fans of the genre should keep an eye on it, but be prepared for something that is annoying and fun in almost equal measures.

Mar 25, 2025If you enjoy platform-heavy Metroidvania games and want to experience a unique dark sci-fi story, I’d say Somber Echoes is a game worth giving a chance.

Feb 12, 2025When we consider what it means to be a good Metroidvania, Somber Echoes definitely fits the bill, but doesn’t do anything to really stand out. Even though the game doesn’t do anything bad, it also doesn’t do anything good that we haven’t already seen in other games. At the end of the day, this is just another decent Metroidvania, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
