I've owned every single Civ game and this is by far the best. Beyond Earth was a disappointing experiment in my opinion and it goes to prove the old adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Civ 6 goes back to the roots of Civ 5 and doesn't attempt to fix it, but improves on it in many different ways. OK its not the finished product and there is stuff I'm not totally sold on yet, but 2I've owned every single Civ game and this is by far the best. I actually like the graphics too and they fit the style of game quite well, the music is the best ever in a Civ game - I don't think you'll find many dispute that.

The AI is still garbage though which is a shame - I haven't really tried out too much of the diplomacy mainly because it seems much harder to create friendships with any of the other civs in the game. And how the AI attacks you is just laughable.

    Graphics in game
The world map makes it very hard to distinguish features for me. Never had this issue before in a civ game. It's pretty difficult to distinguish tiles with resources without the icons turned on as well (Deer for example is pretty much invisible). The fog of war makes matters worse, confusing me, because I cannot easily recognise the land I have discovered. The day and night circle adds to the problem. It's a huge cluster♥♥♥♥.

    Minimap
Continuing the great mistake of Civ:BE, the minimap is absolutely useless. It's impossible to see what's going on. Might as well disable it altogether. It's also very "tiled" and ugly to look at.

    Tooltip
This can't be disabled or edited in any way as far as I can see? First of all, it got an overload of information, so you have to look for a while to find what you were really looking for, second, it pops up too fast. I can't rest my mouse pointer anywhere without a huge tooltip window. It's very intrusive.

    Voice Acting
I find it very annoying that Boromir keeps telling me stuff. It's very distracting. I don't know what it is about Firaxis and voice acting, it was a huge failure in Civ:BE as well, and they continue the failing here. An image of Boromir pops up in my head every time I hear him. They should have gone with a voice actor that is less famous. There's so many great actors out there - why choose one with a very easily recognisable voice, that you can't help connect with several popular franchises and tv shows.

I'll give it some more time, but I am really not enjoying it right now.. what a waste of waiting time and anticipation :(

Civilization VI is a strange new world. It seems to bring back a good bit of the SimCity-ness of the original. The leaders are bigger jackasses than in any previous Civ. After several days of playing, Civ 6 has really grown on me, becoming more engaging and entertaining as I slowly master the various mechanics to city management and global diplomacy.

However, had this not been a series that I was already a big fan of, I don't think I would have given the game more than an hour before uninstalling. First impressions and all that.

The game seems to be made inefficiently or uses inefficient tools. Tasks that should be simple takes a round about way to complete therefore require higher specs for PCs. This seems to be a trend for new games.

Game design/mechanics could have seen more and better improvements, in this respect the game is still really a 7.

For players that havent played civ 5.

You control a civilisation with a starting city on a map divided up by tiles with a number of other civilisation like you and some neutral cities.

You use your city to build buildings to give you different kinds of resources/currency like production capacity, faith and more. There are a few different tech trees that you constantly have to select which route and option to pursue. The speed you progress through these tech trees is determined by the relevant resource - faith, culture, science, etc.

There's also limited diplomacy function and a number of different victory conditions you can choose to meet other than domination which means you conquer every other civilisation.

The game play is quite slow and rigid after a while and you get familiar with it.

Most important to say, the gameplay & features makes me call it a new game and not a DLC like remake of it successors. After 5 civilizations the makers succeeded to provide a fresh game based on the same idea of Civilization. It has a big potential to become a gem like civ 5 is, maybe some polishing and DLC will be needed. But still a game worth playing now.

Update. After playing a couple of playthroughs. This game in its curent state is definitely not a 10, maybe a 8-9. But comparing to previous iterations it definitely deserves a 10.

U see there a lot of biased reviews, some people are turned away by its art style, but for this kind of games, graphics should not have such a big impact. Is it badly optimized? Probably, I can't say for sure, I just updated my videocard, but I can tell for sure Civ5 graphical engine was weak and Extremely badly chosen and yet almost nobody complained.
Most people say that Civ5 is a much better value now, that Civ6 feels like an alpha. And yes I can confirm, Civ6 needs a lot of tweakings, and yes there are plenty of strange things happening, especially in the AI department but as of game design its miles away from Civ5. In my first 3 playthroughs with Civ5 I had much worse experience with Civ5 AI than with Civ6. So should I say to u better buy Civ5 with its 2 expansion. hell no, if u didn't got it till now, I don't know why u would bother now.
But if u are afraid of being turned away by some stupid (buged) AI decisions, or some badly done UI, then u should wait. U can see about the reviews that 1 of 5 people are really pissed off.
Now some details why I consider a big leap in game design this iteration.
First of all, I consider different victory condition mostly stupid maybe because they are badly designed in its core, but mostly because Civilization is about the voyage not the destination, those should be only achievements. The only good victory condition should be Diplomatic Victory just like Orion1.
So a 4x game is all about power gain (strategy), and wear down enemy power (tactics).
Now in Civ5 they did something about tactics, but it was a small leap only, and because of AI not really impactfull.
We all know that power is all about economics, economics will say how much military, culture or religion can u have. Now what about strategy? Investing in culture or religion power doesn't help u proportionally in gaining more power as military power does. So they exist only for the sole purpose of victory condition but never actually help u to get there. Every time I went on rampage I didn't win domination victory, that's just a stupid waste of time, everytime I won the culture, science, religion victory (in that order). Firaxis should understand that culture and religion should be another way of getting more power, not wasting it just to check a victory condition.
Long story short, now for the first time in the series they changed the economics, starting from cities, science, and civics. Do they need tweaking? YES. And maybe we will got them in the expansions, or in Civ7, but after 25 years they finally changed something fundamentally. And that's why I gave him a 10.

There have been a lot of complaints about how the graphical style is 'childish' or makes the game 'for children' or casual mobile gamers. This could not be further from the truth. The very fact that I can eat my breakfast in the time this game takes to load (on a newish skylake 6600k with SSD and Radeon RX 480), should tell you that this is NOT Clash of Kings or some other such rubbish. The 'cartoony' graphics may well attract a few younger gamers - but that is not a bad thing. I've been playing Civ since I was 8 years old when Civ 2 came out and I readily admit to being a bit creeped out and scared by the expanse of jet black nothing which surrounded the 2x2 isometric diamond that constituted the known world.

For us older and supposedly wiser gamers i'd like to remind you that YOU DO NOT PLAY CIVILIZATION FOR THE GRAPHICS. This version of Civ is the most filled out on-launch that I can remember. The vanilla versions of Civ 4 and 5 were dull and lacking in features. The vanilla version of Civ 6 is at least as complex and I believe (having actually played it instead of commenting on screenshots) more complex than the fully loaded Civ 5 with Gods and Kings AND Brave New World expansions.

Simply put, this is the most refined, complex and satisfying initial release of Civilization yet. There are minor niggles (I want to move the board around with WASD but one does not simply find that option available). However, all games have patchable flaws on release so i'm told.

P.S. If anything, I think the graphics have been simplified just so that everything can actually fit on the board without the GPU tanking. Cities now span across the map rather than staying on one hexagon, which increases the rendering complexity significantly. Also remember that many people will be playing on Macs with 4k or even 5k resolutions. One of the graphical triumphs of Civ 6 is that it is playable in 4k and it looks wonderful.

Another issue I have is the UI. It is too clean and sterile and looks like a work application more than a game, especially the various menus you go through when starting a new game.

But despite these qualms I really do enjoy the game and will continue to play it. It is a bit harder than Civ 5 so far, or perhaps I am just not used to the new mechanics and need to relearn the basics.

If you like Civ games, you'll still enjoy this, but if you are new to the franchise, you might want to try an older one to make sure you enjoy this style of gameplay.

But it still needs refinements like we had in the previous versions, it´s to easy to have a huge empire without even starting a war, AI needs to be more aggressive settling cities and fighting for territory.
I had 2 cultural wins without even playing for it and found myself repeating future tech, social media and globalization several times. The most annoying thing is that AI places cities away from their continent with the city center touching my border (no free space between or 6 hexagons around the city) and if I atack I get the warmonger penalty.

And “balance” is almost an objectively impossible scenario to achieve. I think at release, it is in pretty good shape (certainly much better than V). For the most part the new systems work, and work well. Districts are an interesting strategic development; faith is included from the start and has a similar implementation to how civ 5 works; the new card system for social policies is far more flexible than the previous social policies; and the separation of trees is a good feature. There are a couple of areas though where it falls flat. The first is the AI. This is tied closely to one of the design decisions – to keep one unit per tile. The fact is that strategically it is far easier to code an AI that has to contend with stacks as opposed to moving dozens of units across a diverse terrain. A carpet of doom is no more fun than a stack of doom. And when coupled with the new restrictions on movement, the liability of vast traffic jams is an annoying and persistent feature. The AI also has a significant problem in upgrading its units. And its not uncommon to be fielding tanks against an army of AI horseman. The AI is also not aggressive enough at expansion and is handicapped by not being able to wage war effectively. I also think that removing all restrictions on number of cities was perhaps not the wisest decision. The UI could also do with some attention as largely it looks bland and not having building queues is a pretty bizarre omission. Other than that though, it retains its same addictive feel, and once a few patches are out, it will be the same old civ. If you are sitting on fence and not sure whether to buy the game, then don’t. Wait until its on sale or the price has dropped before purchasing. Expand
