This is the best Civilization yet and feels like it has already has a major expansion. It took everything good from IV and V and combined them with some new stuff like districts and honestly a gorgeous art style. I've played them all and this one is the best and will continue to add and improve for years!

Really, why all this bashing on Civilization VI? Does any of you played Civ V without expansions and DLC? In its initial release? Although the new skeleton (no stacks of Doom) was better and so it grow to be better than it's predecessors.
Now it's the same for VI...though it's not justified. Cause it's the best initial release of civilization until now! It's the first one that not only revolutionize like V (Unstacking Cities) but also having almost every feature of it's predecessors(with expansion) without expansions!
So please be mature and stop talking about the unit graphics and clash of clans and see the essence of this game which is much more strategic and full in its release. It has the best skeleton to build upon.
Also except units, which for the first time have different looks in different civilizations (without mods), the map and cities are gorgeous and much, much better than Civ V with it's chaotic and ugly architecture of super, one ultimate type cities and labyrinth of roads, simplistic wonders in wrong place (pyramids inside a frozen lake! :P ), with useless worker in every hex.

P.S. If you learn to play with unstacked cities you can never go back to the old mess. Same as when we learnt to play with unstacked units we couldn't go back.

Familiar enough to be comfortable but different than any previous version. I have been playing for 25 years now and I have purchased each major civ version. After 10 hours I am really enjoying it. I am having constant "battles" with my apostles vs the other religions. The graphics are gorgeous. I do sometimes find it difficult to find my sleeping units and when my religious units move around.

Civ 6 introduces new gameplay that keeps the franchise fresh. Districts, builders, a religious victory. It has been fun exploring this new game and learning its nuances. I look forward to new civs being added and the possibility of a diplomatic victory in future dlc and expansions.

“The year is 1560. Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is already a classic, while Shakespeare’s works are ancient. The Greek Empire reigns supreme in the twin continents of Terra Australis and America. Its capital, Sparta, is the most prosperous, cultured and advanced city on the planet. Now, the most powerful military in the world, turns its attention to other shores, other worlds to conquer…”

It could be a hell of a scenario.

It is my current (first) playthrough of Civilization VI.

How do you build a Civilization in Civ VI? The Settlers remain as they always were. The “Builders” (replacing the “Workers”) finally rid us of endless turns of waiting, finishing every job in a single turn. Alas, you can use a Builder ONLY THREE TIMES (later, with certain perks, more). However, over 50% of the work that the Workers used to do, is now a matter of city production. Enter DISTRICTS, Civ VI’s biggest step forward. Everything a civilization does – pursuing science, creating Great Works, generating a robust economy or building a mighty army, establishing a potent religion or appeasing your population with Amenities – has to do with Districts you construct for your cities. This is a very time-consuming endeavor, one that calls upon you to make wise choices, for a city’s tiles are NOT infinite, and those Districts are going to be there FOREVER, as will the stunning Wonders that you produce!

Scientific advancement remains as important as ever. Civilization VI divides the Tech Tree in TWO fields of knowledge, which evolve concurrently, Science (no-brainer) and Civics i.e. perks that you choose (from a set of Policy Cards) to form and re-form your Government. Geography is more important than ever. Access to resources and terrain will be the make-or-break element in building Wonders and Districts, creating units, even BOOSTING scientific discoveries. The quests from City States help on that front too.

You gain City State benefits by sending Envoys; if you send more Envoys than any other Civilization, you become their Suzerain, and aside from Gold, Faith, Culture, they become your allies. And since City States are so useful when they are on their own, be kind to them and let them deal with Barbarians only, not your armies.

This time, Barbarians are SMART: they send Scouts to your cities. If those Scouts get a peek, they report back and soon you have many more Barbarians attacking AND trying to kidnap your civilian units! So, KILL those pesky Scouts the moment they appear! Thankfully, you can now BIND civilian and military units, essentially providing protection to SettlersBuilders, Religious units and those infinitely precious Great People.

A robust Culture is your way of claiming Great People, in the process creating Great Works (housed in appropriate Districts!) to win the Cultural Victory, but also strengthen your civilization, by e.g. providing a window for additional policies or boosting your scientific advancement. Alternatively, you can FORCE Great People to be yours, with Gold or Faith. Yes, Faith is THAT powerful in Civ VI. Each civilization can get one Great Prophet and start either a Religion with predetermined tenets and symbols, or make an entirely new Religion from scratch. (I chose the Starry Turtle and founded the “Children of the Great A’Tuin”!)

To spread your religion, you will build Missionaries, Apostles to (also) gain new tenets and engage in Theological Combat, and Inquisitors to “cleanse heresy” from your lands. But remember: defeating a Civilization that founded a Religion DOES NOT wipe out religious followers! They can continue to exist and flourish. And YOU can accidentally commit Religious Suicide if you are not careful WHERE you build your Inquisitors!

As Leaders go, the AI in Civilization VI seems to be less random than in previous iterations. An example: early in the game, I met Scythia. Their Queen was proud and dismissive. But the moment I acquired a much more powerful military than her, she messaged me to let me know how she admires my forces. Then I got greedy and attacked a friendly City State. Since she HATES backstabbing, she hated me, and then Denounced me. But STILL, dozens of turns later, she was NOT as stupid as to declare war on me.

With the lovely advent of Corps and Armies (comprised of two and three Units respectively) I expect I will at some point see colorful stuff, like Siege engines accompanying Tanks or some other unreal weirdness. But I LIKE weird; after all Civilization IS all about weird, alternate History.

And this is where I stop. There are plenty of things left for you to discover. If I can say ONE thing that some people might choose to perceive as negative, is that the game CONSTANTLY FORCES YOU ON YOUR TOES. EVERY turn is potentially important. THIS, I see as Civilization VI’s greatest victory.

I would say this game is a 9 out of 10 at current state, 1 point off due to incompetent AIs, but it is surely a step in the right direction in almost any other aspects, adding more depth and more planning to an already successful formula. Firaxis has done a wonderful job and deserves our praise.

Oh yeah--it has Sean Bean narrating it. What u waiting for? Fly to Steam and buy it you fools!

Update. After playing a couple of playthroughs. This game in its curent state is definitely not a 10, maybe a 8-9. But comparing to previous iterations it definitely deserves a 10.
U see there a lot of biased reviews, some people are turned away by its art style, but for this kind of games, graphics should not have such a big impact. Is it badly optimized? Probably, I can't say for sure, I just updated my videocard, but I can tell for sure Civ5 graphical engine was weak and Extremely badly chosen and yet almost nobody complained.
Most people say that Civ5 is a much better value now, that Civ6 feels like an alpha. And yes I can confirm, Civ6 needs a lot of tweakings, and yes there are plenty of strange things happening, especially in the AI department but as of game design its miles away from Civ5. In my first 3 playthroughs with Civ5 I had much worse experience with Civ5 AI than with Civ6. So should I say to u better buy Civ5 with its 2 expansion. hell no, if u didn't got it till now, I don't know why u would bother now.
But if u are afraid of being turned away by some stupid (buged) AI decisions, or some badly done UI, then u should wait. U can see about the reviews that 1 of 5 people are really pissed off.
Now some details why I consider a big leap in game design this iteration.
First of all, I consider different victory condition mostly stupid maybe because they are badly designed in its core, but mostly because Civilization is about the voyage not the destination, those should be only achievements. The only good victory condition should be Diplomatic Victory just like Orion1.
So a 4x game is all about power gain (strategy), and wear down enemy power (tactics).
Now in Civ5 they did something about tactics, but it was a small leap only, and because of AI not really impactfull.
We all know that power is all about economics, economics will say how much military, culture or religion can u have. Now what about strategy? Investing in culture or religion power doesn't help u proportionally in gaining more power as military power does. So they exist only for the sole purpose of victory condition but never actually help u to get there. Every time I went on rampage I didn't win domination victory, that's just a stupid waste of time, everytime I won the culture, science, religion victory (in that order). Firaxis should understand that culture and religion should be another way of getting more power, not wasting it just to check a victory condition.
Long story short, now for the first time in the series they changed the economics, starting from cities, science, and civics. Do they need tweaking? YES. And maybe we will got them in the expansions, or in Civ7, but after 25 years they finally changed something fundamentally. And that's why I gave him a 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was full of expectation waiting for this game. I play Civilization since 1, played a lot all of them (my Civ5 in Steam is at 1,160 hours) and since I liked so much Civ5, I was afraid of Civ6. The non-realistic graphics seemed a bad omen. Man, they were turning it into a Tropico look alike! Two days for release and they put out the Battle Royale (a game without a person playing, with only AI civs) and the graphics... well, the resolution wasnt great, but I didnt like it. Then finally the game was out. First thing, I couldnt run it. Only a very helpful review on Steam (cant find it again, I guess was deleted) explaining what to do (remove Visual C 2015 (both 32 and 64bits) and reinstall from game _CommonRedist folder. Then it worked.

First thing I noticed starting a game was, of course, graphics. Not bad, not bad at all. I guess I was expecting something bad and so it surprised me. You can even turn on sun movement and it changes nicely. The civ leaders figures are kind of funny. Now they all follow a same pattern, and this pattern is toward the comical, which is in synch with the more toy-like graphics. But they could be a bit more diverse. I miss the beautiful Teodora! (:
Another detail about graphics: the info and everything uses a lot of screen space. Very good for older people (I'm 55)! I guess here and there there could be more info, right click info and so on, but its well done.

Then the game itself. Its a very interesting change upon Civ5. It changes so much I had to go back a couple of levels to be comfortably ahead of other civs (I'm used to win on Civ5 almost always on King) so much the game changed. You have to learn many new things, its all different. Which is good.

Districts are great, very interesting idea. Now Civil developments are on a structure like Science, you have to research them. I see pros and cons on this. Before we could go for what was more of our interest, now you kind of have to research all of them. But this can also be good, you get all of them (:

Diplomacy is more interesting, some options more. City-states are a bit different, now you get them by sending Envoys instead of buying them with money. I guess they could have left also the money as alternative, would be more realistic.

The one thing I'm missing are the workers! Now we have Builders, and they can just build a small number of improvements then they vanish. Also, you dont have to build roads, they appear by themselves when Traders move between cities. I miss the roads we build. We could build them for moving troops, not depending on commerce. Again here, we could have both ways, it would be more interesting.

But all in all, its a very interesting game (played only 11 hours on the first day! (: ), well polished and balanced. Cant wait to see the MODs and DLCs that will come around!

It isn't a fast paced FPS, nor a MOBA, but if you are keen on building cities, nations and long term careers, this game is for you.

I had some pleasant time spent playing Civilization 6 and I may be return to it, sooner or later, for another map with glorious historical leaders and well animated units.

Civilization is one of my all-time favorite games, and the leap from the fifth to the sixth game is epic. It offers new mechanics, tons of stuff to do and build and a fresh new look over the older games. There is some new and relaxing music, more factions and overall, it is a huge improvement over the previous game.

Civilization has always been a turned based game in which you can build, move, attack or improve buildings in your turn. Every faction does their move simultaneously and after that, a new round starts. You win the game by conquering all the capitals, achieve cultural victory, science victory or a religious victory. This means that you are not bound to one specific goal. If your military sucks for example, you can try to build as many museums, theaters and zoo’s as possible, to get victorious on tourism and culture. You can trade with other factions/people, build alliances, open your borders, make some shady deals, it is just great.

You can play as many different world leaders from the days of old to the modern era. Alexander the Great, Saladin, Queen Victoria, and many more, they are all there. They all have their special bonusses and you should take advantage of them by building your empire accordingly. For example, Saladin is more focused on religion and trade and only in the starting eras, his military is strong. When the modern age arrives, you really struggle to achieve military successes. Every character has a little backstory that is historically accurate and fun to read.

The game is meant to be played online against friends or other people but offers some scenarios and a skirmish mode for you to play solo. You can always play against the AI factions, which are really well done. The balance of the AI is great and if you want a challenge, you will surely get it.

This installment in the series offer new mechanics like natural disasters, new ways of collecting resources from the map and a new system in which your era score determines if you are entering a golden age or a dark age. With a golden age, you prosper and thrive, with a dark age, you struggle to come around. You earn era score by discovering great inventions, doing research and achieve eureka moments. These new mechanics do require some DLC tough. I really liked the natural disaster mechanic, but sometimes, it got a little over the top. When you see your towns melt away by an active volcano, your harbor washed away by the twelfth million flood and see Darude with his sandstorm, raving over your farmlands, you know, they got no mercy on you.

The graphics and animations are beautiful. The map is blooming with life and movement, and I really like that everything is just so colorful and detailed. Many times, I zoom in close on my empire to see all the different quarries, lumber mills and dams spin and turn.

The sound effects and music are perfect. They are well designed for this game, and I think this is one of the better sound and music designs I have seen. The ambient music is really relaxing and when your units engage in combat, the shots and hits sound just great.

Like usual, Civilization is a hard game. It takes strategy, practice and management to master this game and even then, factors like starting point, barbarians and aggression from other players or states weigh even heavier. However, the game does offer excellent tutorials and gives you a fair chance to learn it.

Civilization VI is a game that I play to relax, with or without friends. Just taking my time, slowly building and developing my empire. I feel no stress, no time pressure, just pure joy and chill. It is one of the few games that I can always pick up and play, without it ever boring me. Maybe Civilization VII will be even better, I don’t know, but for now, this is just a masterpiece of a game that will always be one of my favorites.

    Definitely recommend this gem.

I actually like the graphics too and they fit the style of game quite well, the music is the best ever in a Civ game - I don't think you'll find many dispute that.

The AI is still garbage though which is a shame - I haven't really tried out too much of the diplomacy mainly because it seems much harder to create friendships with any of the other civs in the game. And how the AI attacks you is just laughable.

It's totally fine all the way through the classical period, but it gets rater tedious now that I'm 300 turns in. I also wish the interface was a bit more obvious about what kind of adjancy bonuses I would get. I found myself dropping what I was doing to check the civilopedia quite a bit. Overall the tooltip system needs a little bit more polish.

I like the new way builders work, I like the way eureka's work etc.

    What I say needs improvement:

    1) The AI is a little predictable. It just needs to be tweaked, I can see the basics of the AI is there, but it can get stuck on some things and can be exploited.

    2) A little more complexity to the Tech Tree. I'd like to see more than 1 or 2 prerequisites.

    3) I NEED the ability to remove Old wonders, and Districts... If you start construction on a district THINKING it's say... campus, but you accidentally picked Holy site... and you only have a few auto-saves and notice after those are passed... you cannot remove the error by canceling production or wiping it with a worker... It's permanently incomplete. Incomplete **** from wonders/districts should be able to be removed. We should also have the ability to trash say... Stone henge in favour of a newer more powerful wonder.

    4) The game needs "New Random Seed" Raging barbarians, start bias etc.

    5) I want to re-roll a start position if I get a **** one on Turn 1... I've started surrounded by nothing but Tundra and I wasn't Russia... So I have to re-do my game and set all my settings from scratch... Pointless busy work...

    6) I should be able to set new default settings for games.... instead of what they say are default... It saves time when starting games.

Overall it's a great game... It needs a few updates to add a few over-looked things and fix a few issues though.

But it still needs refinements like we had in the previous versions, it´s to easy to have a huge empire without even starting a war, AI needs to be more aggressive settling cities and fighting for territory.
I had 2 cultural wins without even playing for it and found myself repeating future tech, social media and globalization several times. The most annoying thing is that AI places cities away from their continent with the city center touching my border (no free space between or 6 hexagons around the city) and if I atack I get the warmonger penalty.

Other things such as improvements needing expandable workers and not time is another idea that adds a degree of challenge.

However, while Civ VI is great in many regards, the one flaw that it has is that the AI is stupidly aggressive. Diplomacy is hard in this game, especially when everyone despises each other and looks for ways to go to war. Speaking of war, the AI always seems to try and get itself in a position to go to war. When it does go to war, it follows a Soviet pattern; sending waves upon waves of out-dated and inexperienced units in the hopes of overwhelming their enemies. Spearmen waves though only work while the enemy hasnt researched armored warfare yet. While this proves to be an effective strategy against other AI (For the first time ever I saw the AI kill another AI civ), it doesnt work against players. The only reason why this isnt such a bad thing is that the new multiplayer is great, allowing you to easily replace the dumb AI with more experienced players.

In all, Civ VI is an excellent game with problems that hopefully will be addressed in the future.

This game requires hundreds of hours to become a top tier player (as with most civ games).

The history component of this game is far superior to civ v. I actually feel like I'm learning a bit about landmarks and history, and quotes are read that sometimes induce shivers. Civs are no longer based on well known leaders. These are figures that often don't get the credit that they deserve.

The only reason I'm giving this a 9 is because of the character models and general art direction. I do love that fog of war is gone, and the graphics are pretty solid, but for such a serious and complex game, the style is childish. I started with the mediocre civ rev, and I could not stand the art style after getting into the more complex Civ V. I'm not the only person with this view. I truly wish this game would look like the adult and intellectual piece of art that it is. It's a contradiction that isn't settling well.

Apparently, the AI is awful. I have seen it do dumb things, but I'm holding out hope for a patch. Call me ignorant, but today, patches can save games very soon after launch.

This game is amazing. Gameplay is top notch and replayability is off the charts. I have not tried online, so hopefully that part doesn't suck, but the rest of the game certainly does not suck.

Looking back at my video-gaming life, I don't think any franchise has gotten more of my hours than Sid Meier's Civilization. There's just something extremely alluring about starting a small stone age empire and expanding it as you see fit until the actual future, and the turn-based nature of the series gets me hopelessly addicted every time. Civ VI was no different, even though at launchLooking back at my video-gaming life, I don't think any franchise has gotten more of my hours than Sid Meier's Civilization. There's just something extremely alluring about starting a small stone age empire and expanding it as you see fit until the actual future, and the turn-based nature of the series gets me hopelessly addicted every time. Civ VI was no different, even though at launch it didn't quite rise to the heights of the last couple of numbered entries.

If you're a newcomer, here's how it works: the game begings by placing you (or rather, your first settler) in a suitable spot for a first city. You immediately build it and start managing several outputs, such as gold, production, food, science, faith, and culture. Each output allows you to develop your empire (for example: science allows you to discover new technologies, while production lets your city generate buildings and military troops).

As you explore, you'll come across new landscapes and natural resources, which allow you to build better troops and new structures, including wonders of the world. And of course, you'll come across other civilizations, which can be befriended or antagonized at your leisure.

Civ VI's biggest innovation is how it utilizes tiles around each city you build. Now, each new building, zone or improvement has to go on a specific tile. This means you'll end up with cities that are more focused than before, which adds a lot of strategic nuance. If you settled near a mountain, a land feature which gives several science bonuses, you'll probably want that city to focus on science. Likewise, desert tiles allow you to build important one-per-world wonders, such as the Pyramids or Petra. This sort of decision making is what makes Civ amazing, and here the process is improved by the added depth.

With the steps that were taken in order to streamline this entry, Civ VI is probably the most accessible the series has ever been. That's certainly a good thing, after all, Civ's barrier of entry can be sky-high, with a veritable encyclopedia of concepts to grasp. Some of those decisions go over less well in the strategic side, such as not limiting resource usage to the amount of sources you have. Still, that's a minor qualm in the big scheme of things, and it does mean less numbers to track.

Artificial intelligence, which has historically been a sore spot in the series, is an actual problem, however. In fact, at launch, it was nearly non-functional. For example: a neighbouring civ who is much weaker than you in every way will keep sending prophets to convert your cities to their faith, even after you threatened them with swift military action. This makes it very hard to play that oh-so-satisfying diplomatic game, although this has been cited as a point of continuous improvement by developer Firaxis.

    TL;DR:
Civ VI is awesome, but then again, it would take a lot of effort to make any Civ game anything but. It still ranks behind IV and V in my book currently, but the new foundations are solid enough that I can see it overtaking those beloved entries as Firaxis's continuous quality improvement does its thing. Until then, what you need to know is that it's as addictive as ever. Just take care to not have an entire weekend pass in the blink of an eye while you explore, build, and wage war. It's certainly happened to me, uh, a 'few' times in the last twenty years.

All the stuff about districts and other game play features work well so far. I used to always have to build almost every building in every city, but now there is no bad feeling for not having economic buildings where you are building ports and culture or something. it really forces you to specialize this time, accept maybe in the capital where you can force more district types. The biggest bonus for me is the fact that this feels like a complete game right off the bat. coming from civ 5 with all expansions its good that all the features like religion and archeology and all that stuff is already in game. The whole gameplay is just so much crisper thanks to 64bit and the leaders look very good and i personally like them. Builders are ten times better now. Happyness and population replacements are ten times better also.

-some negatives would be the mini map which looks like a map you can program yourself, just some block colors. I am sure they will upgrade it in expansion or someone will mod it.
    - biggest complaint i have is the biggest complaint i have always had and it hasnt been fixed. It still takes way to long per turn. Its not that bad and i am playing on large map with 8 civs, but it still takes like 10-30 sec each turn and its pretty annoying. i guess its back to small map 4 civs lol.

Games has some bugs sadly, but nothing game breaking and most of them are resolution and touch input related (some have performance issues). So I will start with issues I have running game on my laptop.

    Bugs I have:
    - Cant play on full screen. Regardless of what the settings tells me, it doesn't work on full screen on my machine. if I change the resolution, The game runs only in borderless window on my machine (it seems only I have that issue)
    - in 50h one random crash after autosave. Again, nothing game breaking, since it did happend after autosave.
    - In multiplayer my spy stuck in the unknown and I couldn't end my turn. This broke my game. I couldn't continue since there was no next turn option anymore.

    Changes I liked:
    - District system. It adds to the game more strategic feeling and makes going to war much more fun, since it require more tactics.
    - Fog of war. It also comes with district system pretty well, which makes player want a scout opponents territory before deciding to make war with him.
    - Grouping units. This is a step backwards, since it was in Civ 2. Even so it is in my prospective better, then having entire map of units running around. Also makes fighting much more comfortable.

Chances I don't really care about:
    - Art direction. Cartoony look in serious game don't really match that well, but it is matter of taste and honestly it doesn't bother my that much.
    - Culture development. Now it is development tree. One to one like Science. The card system where you can pick and choose your bonuses is not bad, just different.
    - Many people complain about AI. I cant really say about that much since I play Multiplayer mostly and don't interact with AI that much. All I can say that barbarians are much more aggressive, what makes it for me more fun.
    - Spy. They took most of the spy system from beyond earth. Cant say its bad either. In some way more fun, but for most part just different.

There are lot of changes and I really wont go over all of them. The game is fun in my prospective, there are some small disappointments, like much smaller amount of civilizations to pick from. The developers warned as about it, so I knew about it. What really made me happy is that it preforms well (better then Civ 5) on my laptop and I can actually play on my way, without running out of battery or overheating ( what sometimes happend with CIV 5). I hope they fix small engine issues with resolution/full screen and in future add more civilizations to the game.

Most of the claims are that it's not SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION V (or the previous part). The game is excellent, I did not notice any problems with the work of the game.

The cartoon-style graphics is not really my style, but the game system and the UI has improved a lot. The Eureka system or the inspiration makes more sense than Civilization 5. But still needs some improvements, expecially the AI is kind of dumb.

I think that Firaxis has done a good job with this game. CIV VI is not perfect (objectively there are some problems to be fixed), but still is very close to be, and far surpasses its predecessor (Civ V) and i think that with future expansions will become absolutely GREAT.

What I like: -The Graphics are pretty, but ... -The Animations are well done, and make it more enjoyable fights.

-All gameplay changes, because they improve the game without distorting it. In particular, I like the addition of districts and building of roads with the trade routes.
-The New diplomatic management system with the city-states.
-There are many additions that had been put in CIV V with the expansions.
-The Italian localization is done very well.

    What I do not like:
... I would have preferred a style less cartoonish.
-The AI sometimes makes nonsense. It will have to be improved.
-You Can no longer change the names of cities.

Some stacks are OP. But love the game in general and can't wait for more Civs modders to work on it. Looking forward to years more game play.

What they've done with land and districts though, that is just classic Civ brilliance on a scale of total infatuation.

These two changed alone are enough to re-write the rule book and will take many happy hours to wrap your head around. Plus all the usual goodies are still there, Barbarians can be a nightmare at he start of the game and keeping other nations sweet is still tricky. I've played about 30 hours and still have not scratched the surface. One thing I'll guarantee you though, Holy Wars and the spread of religion will be the bane of your existence (in that infuriatingly addictive way only a Civ game can be).

This is a great game, those people that are scoring it low after only a few hours play are really not doing the game any justice.

Bottom line: This is a great game, not perfect but great. As far as Civ games go it is very much like Civ 5 as far as the hex style and graphics, but they have tweaked so many others aspects of the game it does make it quite a bit different. I LOVE the new districts aspect, you settle a city and then as the city grows and you research the proper technologies you can add districts on to your city. The districts range from giving bonuses to your science output to religion as well as industry and many more.

Speaking of religion, it is handled a bit differently here. Once you set up your religion you can then start generating points which you can use to purchase other items such as military units or apostles etc. You can use these apostles to either spread your religion, add another belief system or start an inquisition (which unlocks the inquisitor) The inquisitor has other abilities to battle the other religions heretics. It is pretty sweet to actually start a holy war in the game and have rightous battle with lightning striking down upon the infidels. Also when you have an apostle or what have you selected to move, it will highlight the different cities in different colors based on their religion so you know where you need to go to spread it.

The workers are now called builders and they have changed a bit as well. No longer can you just automate them to build roads and do your bidding. Now each set you create has 3 charges, when you upgrade a spot on the map it spends 1 charge. After all 3 are spent (so 3 upgrades) they disappear and you need to build another. That sounds kinda awful at first but you really get used to it pretty quickly and it really adds more depth to each area you manage so you feel like you actually accomplish something with your cities and their surrounding areas.

I really am not a fan of the new civics setup. It is setup like the way you research technology and honestly I've never been a fan of the way technology is setup in the first place. Granted you can click to bring up the full tree on both parts to see everything but I much preferred Civ 5's civ trees you could choose from. This route just feels kinda watered down to me as you pick one and then it spouts out another batch of different civic selections once you get it researched. You also get these "cards" you can choose to place that will alter your civ in a few ways to differentiate your civ from others, which is pretty cool. The "card" aspect is my fav part of the civic portion.

Battle is just about the same with a few tweaks. Now you can group together units into one unit to save space and with the added benefit of the combined units becoming stronger overall. Barbarians....well....are barbarians. Same ol same ol with them.

The biggest gripe I have with the game is they really don't have any notification on win parameters. Granted there is the screen you can open to see what place you are in in each specific win category but if you are jut idly playing the game there is no indication of how it's going. My first game I played I won a culture victory and didn't even realize I was close! Just kinda popped outta nowhere. BUT this is a special kinda game where your win can still pop outta nowhere after 14 hours of playtime in one sitting.

    TL;DR --

Graphics -- Not hyper realistic but I enjoy them nonetheless
Gameplay -- Super fun and addicting
Mechanics -- A couple downers but for the most part improvements
    Replay Value -- Insanely high

This is no a 10 score, because of only one thing... the AI, specifically in the military aspect... it still do very illogical things at least in prince/king difficult, and that's a little lame... but overall, like most of the reviews you can see, the best Out of the box Civilization game.

There have been a lot of complaints about how the graphical style is 'childish' or makes the game 'for children' or casual mobile gamers. This could not be further from the truth. The very fact that I can eat my breakfast in the time this game takes to load (on a newish skylake 6600k with SSD and Radeon RX 480), should tell you that this is NOT Clash of Kings or some other such rubbish. There have been a lot of complaints about how the graphical style is 'childish' or makes the game 'for children' or casual mobile gamers. The very fact that I can eat my breakfast in the time this game takes to load (on a newish skylake 6600k with SSD and Radeon RX 480), should tell you that this is NOT Clash of Kings or some other such rubbish. The 'cartoony' graphics may well attract a few younger gamers - but that is not a bad thing. I've been playing Civ since I was 8 years old when Civ 2 came out and I readily admit to being a bit creeped out and scared by the expanse of jet black nothing which surrounded the 2x2 isometric diamond that constituted the known world.

For us older and supposedly wiser gamers i'd like to remind you that YOU DO NOT PLAY CIVILIZATION FOR THE GRAPHICS. This version of Civ is the most filled out on-launch that I can remember. The vanilla versions of Civ 4 and 5 were dull and lacking in features. The vanilla version of Civ 6 is at least as complex and I believe (having actually played it instead of commenting on screenshots) more complex than the fully loaded Civ 5 with Gods and Kings AND Brave New World expansions.

Simply put, this is the most refined, complex and satisfying initial release of Civilization yet. There are minor niggles (I want to move the board around with WASD but one does not simply find that option available). However, all games have patchable flaws on release so i'm told.

P.S. If anything, I think the graphics have been simplified just so that everything can actually fit on the board without the GPU tanking. Cities now span across the map rather than staying on one hexagon, which increases the rendering complexity significantly. Also remember that many people will be playing on Macs with 4k or even 5k resolutions. One of the graphical triumphs of Civ 6 is that it is playable in 4k and it looks wonderful.

The AI has been made a lot more unpredictable this time around, thanks to the addition of a second random trait, and any given Civ can vary in strategy wildly from one game to the next.

Like most Civilization V players, i was a little apprehensive about the more comic like feel to the graphics. As it turned out, the Civ leaders are glorious in styling and animation, the units and buildings are very nicely done too.
Because Civilization is not a historically accurate simulation game, but is instead an empire building strategy game, that uses technologies and dubious figures from history to give it flavor. I can forgive the new art direction. Having said that, i would have loved a more realistic art approach more ;)

District tiles, which are required by cities wishing specialize in a given field, e.g. warfare, religion, science, population size, or any combination of them. Means the land around your city needs to be developed with the cities future needs in mind.
Combine that with the Governmental system, and technology research trees, and you have a lot to think about whilst clicking the settle here button.

If you can make it to turn 100 without getting overrun by relentless waves of Barbarians, or Religious fanatics, you will be sitting pretty untill a Civ you've just met, takes offense at the color of your sandals and denounces you.

Aside from a few non game breaking bugs, and the wait between turns taking a lot longer than is enjoyable at the latter stages of the larger maps, there are very few negatives to speak of with Civilization VI.

If you like strategy games, or are thinking about giving one a try, you could do a lot worse than this game.

But, despite all its shortcomings, it gets a hold of you which is very difficult to get out of. It is just SO MUCH fun crafting your own story and imagining the history of your own world. That's right - your world. While there is no explicit story to Civ, every new game is a story - and you're both the one who tells it and the one who takes everything in. Before you know it, after finally overpowering the German defenses thanks to researching gunpowder, you look out the window and see the sunrise - just how is that possible when you went to grab some water at midnight a few turns back?

Just as every installment in the series, VI brings a fundamental change and does not just reiterate what its ancestors offered. V got rid of the stack of doom and brought hex tiles - VI builds on that by adding districts to build on those hex tiles! Your cities now sprawl, mix, and merge, they don't just sit in there. Take advantage of the various bonuses each district, leader, or civilization have to offer, and build the best city there ever was!

What is not so fun? Well, after you get the hang of it and start feeling confident beating the game on Prince - which is the standard difficulty, offering no bonuses to you or the AI - you start to challenge yourself by moving up the difficulty ladder. Unfortunately, the AI just does not change and the only difference is that the AI is offered starting bonuses, such as more settlers and warriors, which range from mild to outrageous at the highest difficulties. What this means is that your strategy doesn't really change - you just have to survive the initial onslaught and start snowballing. I would say once you start beating 100% of your Prince games, you're ready to beat Deity. Just take it one game at a time and you'll see. However - I wouldn't fault the devs here, Civ is a complex game and AI doesn't just happen.

I would like for Firaxis to revisit the war frontlines as well. Sometimes, you just want your strategic resources and not the whole city associated with it. I think dynamic borders and frontlines would bring much depth.

The DLCs are preferred but I don't feel they are strictly necessary as would be the case with Civ V. Look into mods, not only can they offer new civs or leaders, but can improve the UI and gameplay.

Absolute recommend for Civ players, 4X game enthusiasts, alternate history nerds and worldbuilders, strategy game and board game fans. This is where it's at.
