It may not have inherited the fantastic atmosphere of its predecessor, but the systems have improved even more. It's a bit disappointing that the AI doesn't fully utilize these systems.

The best entry on the franchise, my favorite among the II and the II (yup, I'm nostalgic), good gameplay, beautiful graphics (better with mods), my only complain is about the price, the dlcs are too expansive, almost the price of a full game.

The game clearly has its problems (extremely predictable AI, strange difficulty curve) but is nonetheless a ton of fun. The district mechanics are wonderful, warring is great (though a bit easy & too powerful) and the artstyle is satisfying. IMO the game really shines with the different civ/leader abilities which help at making every game unique.

I have more than 2000 playhours. (500 from dlcs). I can say that AI is pretty challenging in this game. But exaggerations are unnecessary. AI is not that clever, they have the starting advantages after all.

Civilization is one of my all-time favorite games, and the leap from the fifth to the sixth game is epic. It offers new mechanics, tons of stuff to do and build and a fresh new look over the older games. There is some new and relaxing music, more factions and overall, it is a huge improvement over the previous game.

Civilization has always been a turned based game in which you can build, move, attack or improve buildings in your turn. Every faction does their move simultaneously and after that, a new round starts. You win the game by conquering all the capitals, achieve cultural victory, science victory or a religious victory. This means that you are not bound to one specific goal. If your military sucks for example, you can try to build as many museums, theaters and zoo’s as possible, to get victorious on tourism and culture. You can trade with other factions/people, build alliances, open your borders, make some shady deals, it is just great.

You can play as many different world leaders from the days of old to the modern era. Alexander the Great, Saladin, Queen Victoria, and many more, they are all there. They all have their special bonusses and you should take advantage of them by building your empire accordingly. For example, Saladin is more focused on religion and trade and only in the starting eras, his military is strong. When the modern age arrives, you really struggle to achieve military successes. Every character has a little backstory that is historically accurate and fun to read.

The game is meant to be played online against friends or other people but offers some scenarios and a skirmish mode for you to play solo. You can always play against the AI factions, which are really well done. The balance of the AI is great and if you want a challenge, you will surely get it.

This installment in the series offer new mechanics like natural disasters, new ways of collecting resources from the map and a new system in which your era score determines if you are entering a golden age or a dark age. With a golden age, you prosper and thrive, with a dark age, you struggle to come around. You earn era score by discovering great inventions, doing research and achieve eureka moments. These new mechanics do require some DLC tough. I really liked the natural disaster mechanic, but sometimes, it got a little over the top. When you see your towns melt away by an active volcano, your harbor washed away by the twelfth million flood and see Darude with his sandstorm, raving over your farmlands, you know, they got no mercy on you.

The graphics and animations are beautiful. The map is blooming with life and movement, and I really like that everything is just so colorful and detailed. Many times, I zoom in close on my empire to see all the different quarries, lumber mills and dams spin and turn.

The sound effects and music are perfect. They are well designed for this game, and I think this is one of the better sound and music designs I have seen. The ambient music is really relaxing and when your units engage in combat, the shots and hits sound just great.

Like usual, Civilization is a hard game. It takes strategy, practice and management to master this game and even then, factors like starting point, barbarians and aggression from other players or states weigh even heavier. However, the game does offer excellent tutorials and gives you a fair chance to learn it.

Civilization VI is a game that I play to relax, with or without friends. Just taking my time, slowly building and developing my empire. I feel no stress, no time pressure, just pure joy and chill. It is one of the few games that I can always pick up and play, without it ever boring me. Maybe Civilization VII will be even better, I don’t know, but for now, this is just a masterpiece of a game that will always be one of my favorites.

    Definitely recommend this gem.

I love the art design of the new navigation map. I just like playing god in this game and commanding forces. I spend way too much time on this game sometimes. Just one more turn. It isn't a fast paced FPS, nor a MOBA, but if you are keen on building cities, nations and long term careers, this game is for you.

The expansions add a lot of content to the game and are absolutely worth the cost. The only problem I have had was with questionable AI decisions. But, despite all its shortcomings, it gets a hold of you which is very difficult to get out of. It is just SO MUCH fun crafting your own story and imagining the history of your own world. That's right - your world. While there is no explicit story to Civ, every new game is a story - and you're both the one who tells it and the one who takes everything in. Before you know it, after finally overpowering the German defenses thanks to researching gunpowder, you look out the window and see the sunrise - just how is that possible when you went to grab some water at midnight a few turns back?

Just as every installment in the series, VI brings a fundamental change and does not just reiterate what its ancestors offered. V got rid of the stack of doom and brought hex tiles - VI builds on that by adding districts to build on those hex tiles! Your cities now sprawl, mix, and merge, they don't just sit in there. Take advantage of the various bonuses each district, leader, or civilization have to offer, and build the best city there ever was!

What is not so fun? Well, after you get the hang of it and start feeling confident beating the game on Prince - which is the standard difficulty, offering no bonuses to you or the AI - you start to challenge yourself by moving up the difficulty ladder. Unfortunately, the AI just does not change and the only difference is that the AI is offered starting bonuses, such as more settlers and warriors, which range from mild to outrageous at the highest difficulties. What this means is that your strategy doesn't really change - you just have to survive the initial onslaught and start snowballing. I would say once you start beating 100% of your Prince games, you're ready to beat Deity. Just take it one game at a time and you'll see. However - I wouldn't fault the devs here, Civ is a complex game and AI doesn't just happen.

I would like for Firaxis to revisit the war frontlines as well. Sometimes, you just want your strategic resources and not the whole city associated with it. I think dynamic borders and frontlines would bring much depth.

The DLCs are preferred but I don't feel they are strictly necessary as would be the case with Civ V. Look into mods, not only can they offer new civs or leaders, but can improve the UI and gameplay.

Absolute recommend for Civ players, 4X game enthusiasts, alternate history nerds and worldbuilders, strategy game and board game fans. This is where it's at.

Expand

These reviews are insane. I love this game. It works well for me, and I use a Mac, which everyone knows isn't as good as a PC. I enjoy the strategy, leaders, randomness, victories, music, and almost everything. Problem is that it does crash at times and feels a bit worse than Civ V in certain ways. But it has improved for the most part and makes me happy.

Any fan of the Civilization series will tell that you can’t fully judge each instalment until all the expansions are added, but VI is possibly the most complete the series has been right out of the gate. There are of course all the new technologies, units etc. you’d expect from a sequel but the addition of ideas like districts, which specialise in certain building types, adds even greater depth whilst still keeping things relatively accessible. The only real negative remains the A.I, particularly when it comes to conflict, but if (like me) you play online against friends and family this is largely negated anyway.

    Introduction

Civilization VI is yet another entry in the long lasting Civilization series. Civilization VI is a strategy game within the 4X subgenre. 4X stands for:
    - Explore
    - Expand
    - Exploit
    - Exterminate

    Review

These are 4 things that you will be doing in this game. You start off with a settler and a warrior unit, and then you are supposed to found your first city. You pick a location and start exploring. When exploring, you're looking for new places to expand. Land that you have claimed is exploitable, by constructing buildings or improvements. Finally, you will bump into other civilizations, and possibly conflict. To win, you have to exterminate everyone else (literally or figuratively).

    There are several victory possibilities:
    - Time Victory
    - Domination Victory
    - Religious Victory
    - Science Victory
    - Culture Victory

This game improves upon Civilization V, yet it also lacks some features. Civilization VI features unstacked cities, and stacked units. It also now has a culture tree. These features improve the game IMO.

The AI is actually worse compared to Civ V in my opinion. Also, you either love the art style or hate it. I like it, it's easy on my eyes and things are clear to read.

While Civilization VI had some problems for a long time, it has been improved. AI was completely screwed up on launch, but has improved somewhat.

    Verdict

I recommend this as a solid entry in the Civilization series, and a good strategy game overall. If you're not sure, get Civilization V, it's still a great game and is on sale a lot and is often under 10 euros for the complete edition.

Were the AI to be significantly improved, this game would be a 10/10.

Although the new skeleton (no stacks of Doom) was better and so it grow to be better than it's predecessors.
Now it's the same for VI...though it's not justified. Cause it's the best initial release of civilization until now! It's the first one that not only revolutionize like V (Unstacking Cities) but also having almost every feature of it's predecessors(with expansion) without expansions!
So please be mature and stop talking about the unit graphics and clash of clans and see the essence of this game which is much more strategic and full in its release. It has the best skeleton to build upon.
Also except units, which for the first time have different looks in different civilizations (without mods), the map and cities are gorgeous and much, much better than Civ V with it's chaotic and ugly architecture of super, one ultimate type cities and labyrinth of roads, simplistic wonders in wrong place (pyramids inside a frozen lake! :P ), with useless worker in every hex.

P.S. If you learn to play with unstacked cities you can never go back to the old mess. Same as when we learnt to play with unstacked units we couldn't go back.

But it still needs refinements like we had in the previous versions, it´s to easy to have a huge empire without even starting a war, AI needs to be more aggressive settling cities and fighting for territory.
I had 2 cultural wins without even playing for it and found myself repeating future tech, social media and globalization several times. The most annoying thing is that AI places cities away from their continent with the city center touching my border (no free space between or 6 hexagons around the city) and if I atack I get the warmonger penalty.

Everything is a clear refinement of CIv 5 and its expansions. Religion might be a bit too simplified. People complain about the graphics style but they make it easier to know what's going on in your empire. Looking back at my video-gaming life, I don't think any franchise has gotten more of my hours than Sid Meier's Civilization. There's just something extremely alluring about starting a small stone age empire and expanding it as you see fit until the actual future, and the turn-based nature of the series gets me hopelessly addicted every time. Civ VI was no different, even though at launchLooking back at my video-gaming life, I don't think any franchise has gotten more of my hours than Sid Meier's Civilization. There's just something extremely alluring about starting a small stone age empire and expanding it as you see fit until the actual future, and the turn-based nature of the series gets me hopelessly addicted every time. Civ VI was no different, even though at launch it didn't quite rise to the heights of the last couple of numbered entries.

If you're a newcomer, here's how it works: the game begings by placing you (or rather, your first settler) in a suitable spot for a first city. You immediately build it and start managing several outputs, such as gold, production, food, science, faith, and culture. Each output allows you to develop your empire (for example: science allows you to discover new technologies, while production lets your city generate buildings and military troops).

As you explore, you'll come across new landscapes and natural resources, which allow you to build better troops and new structures, including wonders of the world. And of course, you'll come across other civilizations, which can be befriended or antagonized at your leisure.

Civ VI's biggest innovation is how it utilizes tiles around each city you build. Now, each new building, zone or improvement has to go on a specific tile. This means you'll end up with cities that are more focused than before, which adds a lot of strategic nuance. If you settled near a mountain, a land feature which gives several science bonuses, you'll probably want that city to focus on science. Likewise, desert tiles allow you to build important one-per-world wonders, such as the Pyramids or Petra. This sort of decision making is what makes Civ amazing, and here the process is improved by the added depth.

With the steps that were taken in order to streamline this entry, Civ VI is probably the most accessible the series has ever been. That's certainly a good thing, after all, Civ's barrier of entry can be sky-high, with a veritable encyclopedia of concepts to grasp. Some of those decisions go over less well in the strategic side, such as not limiting resource usage to the amount of sources you have. Still, that's a minor qualm in the big scheme of things, and it does mean less numbers to track.

Artificial intelligence, which has historically been a sore spot in the series, is an actual problem, however. In fact, at launch, it was nearly non-functional. For example: a neighbouring civ who is much weaker than you in every way will keep sending prophets to convert your cities to their faith, even after you threatened them with swift military action. This makes it very hard to play that oh-so-satisfying diplomatic game, although this has been cited as a point of continuous improvement by developer Firaxis.

    TL;DR:
Civ VI is awesome, but then again, it would take a lot of effort to make any Civ game anything but. It still ranks behind IV and V in my book currently, but the new foundations are solid enough that I can see it overtaking those beloved entries as Firaxis's continuous quality improvement does its thing. Until then, what you need to know is that it's as addictive as ever. Just take care to not have an entire weekend pass in the blink of an eye while you explore, build, and wage war. It's certainly happened to me, uh, a 'few' times in the last twenty years.

But despite these qualms I really do enjoy the game and will continue to play it. It is a bit harder than Civ 5 so far, or perhaps I am just not used to the new mechanics and need to relearn the basics.
