Now you can live that dream without leaving your home. In Shady O'Grady's Rising Star, you start out as a rookie musician, and work your way up to stardom. However, success doesn't come without hard work. You must join other musicians with compatible personalities, write songs, and practice practice practice! Go out on the town, to get familiar with the local club scene, until the day comes for your first gig. Eventually, you will deal with larger venues, managers, producers, record contracts, product endorsements, and more. Choose your starting city in the continental United States, and conquer as many cities as you can while on tour. You can even buy a home in each city, to make visits more convenient than staying in a hotel or motel. Customize your band with tons of clothing and hair styles, as well as hundreds of different kinds of equipment. You can even get a custom paint job on your band van. [Gilligames] Expand

It was buggy at launch, and remains mildly buggy even after the latest patch(v1.06), but, even so, if you're the least bit into the concept of a band sim, Shady o"Grady is gonna rock your world. [June 2007, p.56]
  2. Rising Star has its share of flaws, with the dated graphics and decent, although limited, audio palette, but at the same time, the game is rather endearing and is entertaining for both a quick-play session and those marathon times when you keep playing for "just one more gig."
  3. An interesting debut, but one that falls prey to weak production and more repetition than a Ramones album.

Shoddy graphics and repetition means that this is more of a warm-up act than a stadium filler. [Aug 2007, p.92]
  5. Outside the rabid RPG fans, who will be intrigued for the unique design, there isn't any engaging experience with Rising Star for more casual players. Even the most rabid of RPG fan will yawn through the poor design.
  6. Rising Star fails the way a rock star should: under the weight of its own ambitions.

Yeah, the game might loo ugly and even be very simple for some people, but if you like the formula, you will have as so much fun as me with this game. Expand

Shady O'Grady's Rising Star has been the only band game I've kep playing for so long. There have been newcomers in the genre and will take a look for sure. But this game is really fun to play.
Yeah, the graphics are a horror. The body proportions of the band members are so distorted that I cannot zoom much into their models. Yet, during the game, I keep them at a size where full body is visible and do not matter much to me.
It starts with a slow pace but if you have a good strategy your second contract would worth millions. There are tough decisions to make and this makes me happy. I have replaced two guitarist and three vocalist since the start. Yet, finally the band came into a good chemistry.
The game grows on you and even though I do the same things over and over there are some big goals to conquer that keeps me going. Like being the most popular in all regions of the US and having an album have its debut at 1st spot. My last band is from Detroit and is growing popularity. Now I'm planning on to tour on the west coast.
The only problem with the game is that there are no guides in the internet to have some tips and the game is no longer supported or distributed. You should check out some rental shops for the hardcopy.
If you like band games, you'll like this one for sure.
