For the time being, however, the extraction shooter feels shockingly dull, despite its excellent idea of incorporating hulking mechs. [Early Access Review]

SAND: Raiders of Sophie is a unique extraction shooter that puts you and other players on a personal giant walking mech called Trampler. The Trampler is your base and fortress that you can use to traverse the desert runes of planet Sophie and engage in combat with AI or players’ Tramplers. Although the game follows the same generic loop of joining a raid, finding loot, and extracting, it has its unique charm with a lot of potential. Currently, there are two game modes to play, which you can either play solo or in a group of five players. Playing a squad raid feels more lethal, as it distributes the roles of managing the Trampler, scavenging, looting, fighting, and so on. At its current state, the game is missing some of the many features, like a proper tutorial, in-game merchants, world bosses, and events. However, for the price of $24.99, it still offers great value and replayability. [Early Access Score = 65]

SAND: Raiders of Sophie has promise. The unique premise is great, and pulling off a mech-based extraction shooter was a mechanically daunting task that we should all be rather impressed by. There are still issues, some far more serious than others, but the developers seem keen to fix them. I have hope that, given enough time, the game will be patched into a playable and exciting state, and I’m looking forward to following the development as it continues. [Early Access Review]
