RetroRealms' first two "cabinets" arrive in style with excellent platforming gameplay, an authentic '90s vibe, and an interesting first-person 3D wrapper of a hub world that reminds you the game isn't just mechanically tight; it's also horror-obsessed. Boss Team and Wayforward prove to be a compelling tandem with this game, and given the team's intentions to build out its arcade with additional famous (and sometimes masked) faces, I'm hopeful RetroRealms can go the way of the slasher series and get several sequels of its own.

Despite its sweet 16-bit presentation and gruesome arcade-inspired gameplay, RetroRealms: Halloween isn’t quite the treat fans of the franchise deserve. If it featured twice the stages it offers and some more compelling enemies to eviscerate, it’d be a lot easier to recommend. Unfortunately, with its unexciting extras and a reliance on cheap gimmicks to pad out its meager hour-long running time, RetroRealms: Halloween is a fleeting experience that fails to justify the price of admission.

Even though RetroRealms Arcade can be a fun action platformer at times and has amusing references for horror buffs, its pricing scheme makes it impossible to recommend.
