Um jogo com um belo trabalho gráfico e fluidez de gameplay, um enredo interessante e funcional, vale muito a pena conferir.

Remember the parts in Ratchet & Clank where you play Clank? The ones with some simplistic combat mechanics with some heavier emphasis on puzzles and platforming? Imagine that with stunning hand drawn isometric visuals and you will get Retro Machina. Unfortunately, it also has several issues which come to surface as you progress through the game.

Retro Machina is heavily crippled by its level design and backtracking. The gameplay loop is simple. Kill enemies, find some keys and unlock some new areas to progress. But there comes a point in Retro Machina that you keep finding yourself simply lost in its large map with no visual clue as to where to go next. Having to backtrack to every location just to figure out my next steps started feeling tedious and I did not have the patience to play it through.

My early experience with the game was an easy 8/10. As I progressed, it got worse. It is a hard pass and I am afraid I could like it even less if I kept on playing. On the other hand, I am curious what the Brazilian studio will come up with next time.

On the one hand we have beautiful visuals, distinct melancholic atmosphere, and an interesting backstory to uncover. On the other – mediocre combat, repetitive puzzles, slow pace, and various technical issues. It is definitely an enjoyable game though and I’m looking forward to Orbit Studio’s next title. If you happen to be craving a new isometric puzzle-platformer then this could make for an alright distraction, but you have many other better options out there. Retro Machina is a game that takes too much inspiration from the past, which may sadly lead to it being forgotten in the future.

Despite checking many of the most important boxes in the adventure game design guide, Retro Machina is a beautifully envisioned world waiting to be demolished. However, all of the best elements are derailed due to monotonous combat and drastically over-engineered puzzles. This will be a pretty ride, but one you might never see through to completion.
