I dont know what it is, the infamous Unity engine, developer incompotence or what, but the super annoyingly long loading times between game world sections, the constantly occuring stutter and occasional freezing during gameplay, lagging cutscenes, game minimizing to desktop all the damn time when youre using mouse controls, fair share of game crashes and game's resolution getting bugged that it gets stuck running in microscopic window, the massive memory leaks and stupendously high VRAM usage for its much much less than world class visuals. Inability to rebind mouse/kboard controls. Its just not accecptable and goes to show they did not care about the experience PC users would be having. Seriously with the backing from Microsoft, they atleast could've used a better engine, greedy bastards. So in the end all these issues drag the overall experience down by quite a lot.
Gameplay wise things get more positive. The platforming is solid, action, even tho somewhat repetative, is still fun aswell. If only for the fact that tougher enemies can become really annoying since they pretty much lock onto you making evading them nearly impossible at times that result in one or two hit deaths, mostly due to lack of mobility from Joule's side, there needed to be some kind of extra option for sprinting so its easier to avoid locking on enemies, such as rogue K-9's which even with boosting catch up to you way too easily. Then there's an issue with flying enemy type FL-1R, higher level ones have an attack variant that is simply unavoidable, these pretty much kill you with 1 or 2 hits if you have no cover during fighting them. Ordering and fighting along your corebots felt satisfying aswell. The various dungeons, altough again somewhat repetative, were still worthwhile affairs that i completed them all.
If there's any other praise to be given then it would be for the core bot companions, theyre really well animated, modelled and each have a distinct personality depending on the frame theyre in. Plus all the combinations of lethal attacks they got. Joule herself isnt bad either, she's far from a truly memorable character, but still a likeable one.
Story is quite bare bones and relatively short, cutscenes are sparse. Youre forced to learn about what happaned before Joule's awakening through audio logs, i sadly couldnt find all of them even if i explored pretty much every nook and cranny of the game world. Still they offer interesting backdrop on events and a wider sense of the premise. Far Eden as a setting is pretty intriguing albeit feeling incomplete, you simply wish there was more narrative exposure. For what it is, the story still kept me hooked and engged. Game world also offers plenty of interesting locations and vistas.
One last thing that i really struggled with was the end game levels, its not that i hate a challenge, simply the difficulty curve sky rockets compared to what you do in the base game, platforming becomes much more difficult, pretty much relying on trial a lot of the times, but its the small battle arenas in these levels that feature way too OP enemies that annoyed the hell out of me, plus stupid radiation that takes away your health while fighting them. Make sure you properly level up and strengthen your corebots before initiating the end game.
Overall i would describe ReCore as a very rough gem, potential is there, just could've used more polish and care.… Expand
