    Heartbreaking and touching this game offers a lot.

    While there might be some plot holes, the story itself is a fantastic adventure, especially when playing Chris (and Diane). It made me think about a lot of things and that alone makes it worthy a 9.

    Soundtrack is also worth mentioning, it fits perfectly with the game.

    Delivers the feels. If you're a fan of To the Moon, Life is Strange and Firewatch, this will be right up your alley.

    Rainswept is a great mystery game. The story kept me interested all the way through. It has some decent twists and turns and good character development. It is fairly linear though. There are dialogue options but they aren’t optional in the sense of choosing a response. You don’t choose which questions to ask for instance, you just ask all of them. You get to choose in which order to question people but that doesn’t change the course of events. You have some point and click bits where you have to find certain items but nothing that is really hard or a puzzle. Basically there isn’t much game play to Rainswept. It is more of a point and click kinetic visual novel. That being said the quality of the story makes it worthwhile. The graphics is not quite pixel graphics but a similar style. There was good detail on things like plants; gore; objects; furniture; etc. There is a nice seaside vista as well. One thing that was weird was the legs of all the people looked really thin. The music was well done but there were a few stretches when the game was in total silence and they felt out of place as the rest of the game has at least some ambient noise to it. One issue I did have was that the boxes that show up when you can interact with something would only show up when you stand in a certain spot. You could be one inch too close or too far and they wouldn’t be able to be clicked on. Also there was one moment where a fire fighter finds a cigarette but and proclaims this proves arson. I’m no arson expert but generally that proves nothing and if anything leans more towards an accidental fire. One logic flaw I also saw was that in order to have you walking all over town your car finds itself in needs of repair. My issue with this is simply that it makes no sense. Are you telling me this police force has no cars to spare ? I get that you’re supposed to explore the town and having a car would defeat that but it is a flimsy excuse.

    I played Rainswept on Linux. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs. It uses the Unity engine. I played version 1.1.5a of the game. It uses the OpenGL API. Alt-Tab didn’t work. The game supports manual saving outside of certain sequences but it didn’t always seem to work. A couple times it loaded my save but I was a little bit before when I had actually saved and had to redo a dialogue sequence. There were four save slots to use. There is also auto saving for those who prefer that. There is just one graphics option to tinker with. The game ran at a constant 144 FPS the whole time.

    If you think I was nitpicking above you would be correct. If all I can do is nitpick then you know there are no real serious issues to be had. If you’re looking for a game based around puzzles or action you will be disappointed but if you’re looking for a laid back mystery game with a great story you can unwind to then you should enjoy Rainswept. I finished it in 4 hours 10 minutes and paid $16.68 CAD for the game. I think that is more than fair and I would have even found $20 to be worth it.

    Rainswept calls itself a detective adventure, yet it’s actually not, and those who come looking for clever intrigue and unexpected twists won’t find any. But fans of reflective reading will enjoy this melancholic psychological adventure and dive deep into a multilayered inner world of its characters.

    In general, I wish the story involving Detective Stone was more fun to follow. Following the stories of Chris and Diane was always enjoyable, so I'm sure that the positive elements of the game would still shine through with some tweaks on the typical detective story they're framed around. What was done right kept me playing, and when Rainswept tells its story right it is an interesting and engaging experience.

    With beautiful artwork, a compelling story with fleshed-out characters, and an original soundtrack, the few foibles and a shorter-than-you'll-want playthrough time shouldn't stop you from checking this title out.
