This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game could have been a lot better. The combat parts are enjoyable with some beautifully crafted mission areas. I just finished my first play through on hard and I feel the game is slightly let down though by the strength of the shotgun in the tight corridor areas, which number about 90% of the total mission spaces. You are pretty much golden once you get it. Graphically, as others have said there is an issue when you turn around and the textures are redrawn in detail about half a second too late. The textures themselves are poor when close up, but as you exit the games first room the vista is quite amazing. The brown-ness of the landscape does get a bit boring, as does the first few hours of the game without much story at all other than helping out some guys by being a one man army. The story in general is really bad quality, none of the cast have any appeal or character and there really is no final boss fight to speak of which is just a massive anticlimax, and reeks of a rush job considering some of the early boss fights. All the jobs actually have a decline button, the purpose of which, considering the alternative to doing the quest is doing nothing at all, would seem to be completely superfluous.

The racing side is enjoyable, the cars handle well and the combat/guns are OK, pretty much targeting on their own. The one down side is some later stages of the rally pick-up-point battles where you race towards spawning lights. The lights spawn in a cycle which really makes no sense and rewards (if you are in front) the people behind you, making it often better, although less fun, to just camp one set of points whilst the other three cars collect the remaining lights.

The combination of action/shooting and driving reminded me a lot of GTA 4. Rage really could have done with little things like cut scenes when introducing jobs, rather than taking inspiration from World of Warcraft. Running into the mayorâ

Simply love how everyone talks about the id guys like they were dating and they broke your heart. First off, running a cheapo gaming rig with a 560ti. I have no issues with screen tearing unless I alt tab or shift focus off the monitor which is running the game full screen. Frame rates are near flawless. On the negative side, the textures are not high resolution, and as far as the texture pop in, it certainly is noticeable. Here's the issue I take up with all the haters here. It's laughable to have people complain about lack of story and how that is somehow a major flaw in comparison to other id titles. Doom obviously had a fantastic story with multiple plot lines waiting for resolution until the final moments...oh wait...they stuck you in a level with a bunch of baddies and guns and you had to find a way through till the glorious bloody end. id's forte is level design and software design. Rage is a great example of both. Having played both Space Marine and Deus Ex in the previous weeks, I can say with firm confidence that Rage far outshines them in pure FPS fun. It's the first game where I actually find myself shooting certain enemies in the leg/arm to momentarily open them up for a headshot. The level design is top notch. Both you and your enemies have numerous opportunities for cover and tactical choices. They use grenades effectively in a majority of cases. If they feel they have the advantage, they will press forward to a more aggressive position. When you start taking out members of a squad, they adjust to a more defensive position. Here's where I break from the pack. Rage does something that very few games have done in the past year or so. Dating back to Mass Effect and other Bioware titles (pre-3D), so many games have attempted to provide gamers with the illusion of choice, thereby mimicking free will. Rage does not rely choice at all excluding weapons, ammunition, and crafting. And to be honest, I'm thankful for it. I was getting tired of having to shoulder the weight of all the potential ramifications of my actions a la Deus Ex, Dragon Age, Mass Effect. Aaaand here's where I rejoin the pack. Rage would be great as a tech presentation for level design and FPS physics mechanics. The driving is pointless. The cities are pointless. Running around and gathering quests is pointless. They could remove all of the fluff and have a stellar game where you simply hop from one level to the next. All the additions are actually detracting from the core values of the game, and simply leading to a timesink in between fantastic shoot-em-up gameplay. Lower the price by $20, scrap the extraneous bologna and focus on the strengths. Expand

Story are bit shallow but this game is fun to play. Maybe it's nothing original in terms of game play but it's a nice mix between shooting and driving. Shooting mechanics and driving are awesome. Graphic are pleasing but not made to impress much.

Once the problems with tearing and textures are sorted out, Rage looks stunning to a degree I've not experienced in games before. Sure, some of the textures are that sharp but on the whole I didn't find them distracting. They're largely sharp where it matters. The environments are rich, with, for the most part, little repeat of objects making everything look fresh at each corner turn. The NPCs move well and die with satisfying drama and good animations. The shooting is solid and works well, with generally interesting environments, mixtures of cover and run and gun, and a nice heft and feel to the weapons. The problems, though, are many. The driving parts are weak, and while more fun that I expected, I wasn't expecting much. The 'RPG' elements are nothing of the sort. There is no variable character development , aside from choosing the armour at the start of the game. The plot is weak. At the end I was left with the feeling the last 2 or 3 missions were rushed to get the game out of the door. The last level and ending itself are most unsatisfying and a real let down. As a demo for a game engine it works well. I really hope Fallout 4, for instance, can make use of this engine to better effect. But as a stand along game by the end I was hurrying through to get it over with and, while the ride was fun for the most part the lack of depth, unmemorable characters and plotting and laziness on the part of id for the last 1/3 of the game make it little more than an average AAA title. A little disappointed with this game.

I was hoping for something similar to fallout with large explorable areas. But it turned out to be quite a linear FPS style game. It is quite similar to borderlands, but even borderlands has wide open areas and a lot more freedom of travel. Rage has no wide open areas, not very explorable at all. Way too linear for my liking. I stopped playing it a quarter way through simply because I got bored..

My score will be higher than many simply because I didn't have to endure all the problems it had at launch. I didn't expect some magnum opus regarding story considering this is iD, so I'm not that let down there. You'd think that after Doom 3 it would also be unrealistic to expect decent textures, but after the much touted "mega-texturing" feature, I was hoping not to see Playstation 2-like, 8-bit color stuff at the very least. For every (just) decent texture, there are dozens that look just plain horrible. Like some other developers of late, they seem to have forgone texture artists in favor of shader code. I suppose this is yet another result of the recession/depression we are still having to endure, thanks to the current administration. Rage is mindless fun, like all other iD shooters, and truly is quite a bit more fleshed out than any game they've made to date. However, I can't see many developers lining up to license this engine, as it doesn't bring anything new to the table that I can tell. This is problematic for iD, who has always depended more on engine licensing than sales of in-house developed titles. Expand

I have manually changed settings by enabling the command console and have fixed some issues but for some reason my Vsync will not turn OFF. No matter what setting i have it on the game forces a frame rate of 60 fps which is fine... except when it dips below and snaps back to 60 abruptly causing a serious lag effect. PC users like tweaking a lot of settings to make the game run custom to the player but no one wants to have to forcefully override settings to do it. Give us the options back!! As for the story, I haven't really been captured yet though the ambiance and the scenery seems nice. I am however disappointed that this game imitates a free world yet more or less restricts your path to a rather narrow walkway at times. It's essentially a false sense of open world/ free roam. GOOD: Been a player since the original DOOM series... I play all the Id and Raven games... they are awesome developers and they never cease to break new ground. The beauty of the game and the feel of it is unmatched, it REALLY makes you feel like you are immersed in this world and in the story. They always set these games up that way... making you a nameless/faceless charachter so that you FEEL there, personally. As the professional critics said: they spread their ideas too far and wide; although the racing, weapons, variety of mini-games, crafting and quests are all very fun... they are abrupt and don't really fit in anywhere in the story. The story builds and keeps you in suspense but it falls off of a post-apocolyptic cliff and into a void. You are playing through and having good fun, you are waiting for plot twists or huge climaxes in the story, such as a town being attacked or something more happening with the charachters... but nothing happens. lol It's a 3-town/phase game and then you get the final mission... which was very fast and with NO BOSS. It ends so abruptly your head spins and you're eyes are as big as frisbees staring at the screen... waiting for something else ot happen, but nothing does. lol Then you're in a love-hate tragedy. I believe the focus of this game was NOT story (which was a massive mistake) but it was simply playing with all the new features and various aspects... it was a game of mini-games with a fast and dry campaign. MUCH MORE could've been done wiht the story here and you wish there was. Despite this being a novel of random blank pages... ALL other aspects are awesome and as usual Id manages to make a very fun game once again. (I know Doom 3 had me dissapointed in the same way though, being that the final level and CyberDemon boss was really a lame setup and too easy... this might be becoming a trend with them). The beasties and baddies and all the different bandits are awesome though, all unique to fight (although they all share the same voice in each tribe). The combat racing was pretty good. The weapon variety was fun; you can uniquely tailor your fighting style because there's so much you can do with killing-instruments and crafting. The world does look really amazing and nothing is cookie-cutter cut and past, all areas are unique which must've been A LOT of hard work. No hallways that all look the same or similar-anything, everything is art in the instances and levels. The aesthetics are always awesome. I also have the LOWEST requirements to run this game and it really run superb with my outdated **** Still looked great too with the minimal graphics card. (Other people complained and I don't know why... it ran just fine for me, the textures smoothing out quickly I didn't mind a bit).

Enemies are challenging to fight. It does get to be WAVES on some levels at times... but it's also a first person shooter that's challenging you, (so there's to be a lot of enemies at some points) and all combat instances are different, not just "waves". (Depends usually who or what you're fighting). The game is thrilling as well; no matter how used to these you are or how brave you are you still manage to jump quite a bit. The main boss in the Dead City will make surprise the **** out of you! They've always done an awesome job with this aspect as well... making great sci-fi horror games. Despite all these things they did well... most people are pissed off simply because the story is short and dry and the suspense that builds in you from the game ends up being for nothing. People love stories. Knights Of The Old Republic, released a decade ago, was a legendary game, primarily because of it's story, it was just fun and fantastic; you don't need a lot of flash and features if you have a great plot.

Many game makers for a long time at this point, have been neglecting what's really important and what made games great in the past in a race to outdo each other with "features". A great game is like a timeless hit-song, most of them are simple, they just know how to strike you. All-in-all I hope they create something like the originals again and can produce a plot that keeps you enthralled as well as a reasonably fun game. No one cares about a bunch of different towns, scenes and charachters that essentially do nothing and are like plantlife.

The game looks very good as well, ever on my slightly outdated system.

Vehicle combat and driving is very different then player control. It is clunky and the steering is either on or off. You are either turning or you are not. That makes the frequent racing and combat a chore rather than a joy.

In this game you are able to upgrade and customize your weapons and vehicles........kind of at least. You are teased with a few tweaks for items that make you think that this game will have an RPG element to it but in reality the little that you are able to customize make almost no difference in gameplay or weapon efficiency. I spent much time racing and doing side quests to earn the "racing certs" or cash to upgrade my things, only to ultimately be very disappointed.

Another problem I had with the game is the need to supply finite ammunition for your vehicles. When you make your way out into the larger (I use that word lightly) world, you find yourself in combat with other vehicles. You are able to shoot them and kill them, repair your damage or put up a shield or deploy an automated gun, all which sounds fun until you realize that everything you have is very limited which sucks because the baddies........are infinite in places. So you will discover that the solution, is to just speed by and get to where you are going as fast as you can, almost completely nulling a large portion of the game.

Yet another few issues to mention, the UI is obviously made for a console (you can only scroll through 4 weapons at a time even though you can select any weapon with the appropriate number key. You can only have 4 special items equipped at a time even though you can carry hundreds of each one. Using special ammo requires using the mouse to select it from a diamond shaped, 4 quadrant menu that is brought up by holding a key and selecting it with the ENTIRELY WAY TO SENSITIVE mouse.

In conclusion, this is a game worth playing IF you are able to get it for an affordable price. As a dollar value I would say this game is worth $15-$20.

The actor models are sharp, living and convincing while the world textures are very similar to Half Life 2 quality. This game was meant to be a revolution whereas ended up as regresing the genre in few aspects. The objects in locations are simple bitmaps so you feel like you`re in a movie studio or a theater. In summary, graphics never let the player get immersed and forget that he`s just playing a game.=================GAMEPLAY is also painfully mediocre. The player has an inventory of guns and some objects. He can craft some items that really do not make a difference and just stay in the inv. most of the time. There is no progression system, the guns upgrade system is limited to 2 most basic upgrades. You cannot loot fallen enemies from their armament and armor. The guns are fun and interesting while the melee combat is drab and unresponsive. At one point you stop and think there is really no point to keep playing. The quickuse feature does only so much to complicate combat instead of smoothing it out. There is no automatic leaning out of cover, you can`t turn the crosshair off. Besides shooting there`s really no more you can do. Even the relatively clever AI doesn`t manage to change the routine here. Maybe the car races deserve to get a mention but they get boring fast it is obvious that this is unfinished. ================STORY, generally would have been a hit if they got more time to build it. The schematic part goes like this you enter a town, buy some supplies and go do a main quest. Then you renturn, get paid, buckle up with resources and go back to the same 2-3 locations to do the same which is shooting people/mutants. It is really too bad, because some of the locations show great creative work that make you go "uh, oh!", then 3 minutes later you are hiding behind a couch in a room that is a jpg in 80%. There is no interactivity with objects. Rage actually started getting interesting at the very last level that showed both some graphical prowess and very satisfying gunplay. And then SNAP! it ended with a 40sec cutscene.
=========VERDICT overall this game shows some signs of a very ambitious project that ended up being a very generic basic and schematical FPS that fooled lots of people into buying based on false marketing campaign.

Your character feels agile while on the ground, but there's no jumping to speak of, so don't think about ever hurtling over cover.

The weapons in the game are interesting enough, especially with the various types of ammo. The only problem is that the enemies aren't terribly interesting - a lot of the later enemies become veritable bullet sponges that soak up a cartridge or more of ammunition from your guns, making them feel less than useful.

The story is not great and slowly paced. It reminds me a lot of Borderlands in a lot of ways. You spend about 15% of the game in your first little outpost, doing quests for John Goodman, when you then move to a larger town where you spend about 65% of the game, doing very similar quests - unfortunately, about half of your quests involve you visiting the same areas you already cleared out in order to perform a secondary objective. It's hardly interesting. Then you spend the last 20% of the game in a final town, where you don't really interact with anyone and the game comes to an underwhelming close.

So, all in all, solid shooting mechanics with boring plots and boring enemies. I'm sure this was great when it was first released, but I can imagine that a game like Doom 4 has surpassed it in every imaginable way.

Or similar to a FORD PINTO towing a trailer full of gym equipment uphill on a cold day. That said, the game ran better on 3.4Ghz on 4 cores, rather than 4.2Ghz on 2 cores. I suspect the more cores, the better the game will run. It loads textures very slowly, it took almost 2 minutes for the game to load all the textures while playing, during that time you can barely move and get to stare at a slide show.

Aside from the horrid game engine, it looks like a counterfeit version of Borderlands. The story is a bit more exciting however.

This is the worst game performance on my computer... ever. I might go out and buy an 8 core CPU just to see if it runs better.

I would post more info on the game if I could play the bloody thing without all this lag and terrible graphics rendering. Sorry my computer sucks, it is old, almost a year old.

Maybe if it weren't made by id software it wouldnt be getting that high of a score

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An ambiguous impression. Some praised, but most called Rage the most failed project of id Software. Having passed starting location I quickly became involved in the simple plot, the new world and overall visual style (the same Borderlands, made in a similar design made me retching due to monotony of colors and locations). However, after a few missions I felt lack of drive. Permanent inspection of all corners, collecting beer bottles and garbage is very tiring. Eventually I was tired and launched Cheat Engine, hacked money and the game immediately transformed from action with the need to inspect each enemy and every corner in search of ammunition in a cheerful and dynamic shooting range.
The ending is ruined. Of a short movie, we learn that the arks began to open around the world threatening the Government (or its remnants?) complete annihilation. We never saw General Cross, in the Underdark as were government soldiers, and have remained, and all resistance vanished somewhere. I certainly understand what a free game after the main story, but you can somehow mark our contribution to the world?
Overall, I liked the game. I think, not least thanks to the hacking of money. Honestly walkthrough, saving each bullet, don't see sense, but to plunge into this madness of fire and explosions and finish for a couple of nights quite well. Then game doesn't have time to get bored you.

RAGE was hyped up enormously prior to its launch and I was one of those gamers who looked forward to getting around to playing it. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the game but I was always aware that it could have been so much better. The story is standard post-apocalyptic fare and, more notably, the script lacks humour. The gameplay and combat, while good at times, are never outstanding. It tries to create the illusion of open-world play but in fact it’s pretty much a corridor shooter with defined routes and little opportunity to explore. The graphics are also deceptive: the landscapes look good from a distance but close-up the textures are disappointing. It should be noted, however, that the background music is quite impressive. There are echoes of both Borderlands and Fallout 3 here, but RAGE is a subpar game when compared to either. It’s a shame that the people who brought us the excellent Doom series failed, on this occasion, to match their earlier success. I’ve no doubt, however, that they will regain their form in the future.

My criticisms are the invisible walls on rooftops restricting exploration of some interesting areas, not a huge problem, and the limited size of the game world, also the limited replay ability, though I feel that's pretty standard with visual rpg type games.

It is not the fast paced, mindless action shooter that a game like Quake 2 is. It is not a semi action adventure ( or whatever it is called ) like Borderlands with character progression and looting.

It is not an adventure or so - it is a mix of all - and whatever genre you like - you ll experience shortcomings.

The open world is an illusion, the levels are claustrophobic at times. It feels like a chain of arenas, connected by narrow tunnels. The enemy AI is surprisingly poor - and can only really benefit from restricting the player to those very small arenas, because if the player was allowed to use the enviroment like it is possible in games like Fallout 3 or Borderlands 2 ... even the big bosses would fail misrably.

the AI ( at least so far ) does not allow any other playstyle but to charge into the battle, guns blazing. ( crouching and using a silenced weapon to kill enemies one by one does not work, because the AI kind of cheats to find you - and then rushes you anyway.

the wasteland driving sections are ... well... alright, but become kind of a chore. - but they are not worse than other driving sections in other open world games ( actually, the only game i can compare it to is borderlands - and compared to that - it is actually very good )

the graphics are also a mixed bag. - as far as i remember, the game uses a somewhat innovative technique ( megatextures? - cannot really remember ) - meaning that we are not graced too much with repeating UV textures especially in the overworld - and the world does look very good indeed. - at least in terms of a desolate desert wasteland - it is probably the most beautiful depiction in any 3d game i have seen so far. - amazing skybox and very good sand and stone texture. The building textures are not as good though - and the detail ( mesh ) of the world is also a bit low resolute.

what annoyed me the very most are the invisible walls. - i simply HATE it when my character cannot seem to jump over a knee-high boulder, a fence or walk through a bush of tall grass?!

maybe i am spoiled by real open world games - but i noticed it very much in that game.

UI and gameplay is alright, not brilliant, but ok

    resumé:

the game tries hard to please as many players as possible by being something it is not, an open world, action adventure rpg. - it is not even a true action shooter. - it is fun though - and i would compare it to borderlands 1 in terms of "good ideas and execution"
it does suffer from technical problems ( tearing, texture pop ins etc. ) - but all in all it is worth a budget price.

Rage has such a great world that begs the player to explore it and yet limits the player to shallow halls and narrow corridors. One cannot simply jump over a knee high rock to explore anything.

The gun fights and combat 'feel' is awesome, I'd argue it is some of the most satisfying combat out there. The weapons are diverse and great fun to play around with particularly when considering the different ammo types. Sadly, the best ammo types and guns are not accessible until too late in the game.. the BFG, for example, the player gets in the last 5 minutes of the game. WTF.. what an awesome ammo / gun and I got to use it ONCE?? They rushed the end, and there is no end boss. The is no end really, this speaks of id getting tired of the development and said to themselves "f**K it just release as is".

Excellent shooting mechanics, decent story and fantastic level design set in a debris-filled post-apocalyptic wasteland littered with bandits. What seems an “open world,” though, is really a set of corridors connecting the various hubs, enemies are endless reused, and pointless crafting slows the otherwise swift, deft gameplay. Recommended at a discount of 50% off (for the game + DLC) or more.
Total size on my hard-drve: 23.8 GB

++ Level design. The Dead City, the Distillery, Jackal Canyon… Simply great all round.

+ Excellent characters. They’re never explored in depth, but everyone is unique, with few re-used voice actors.
+ Great selection of weapons. A variety of specialty ammo was a nice touch.
    + Good driving mechanics.
+ Great atmosphere. Walk into a bar in Wellsprings and there are people chatting, a jukebox is playing in the corner, yellowish light filters through the dirty windows, and a dusty haze hangs in the air.
    + Excellent soundtrack.
    + Excellent voice-acting.
+ Excellent facial animations and body language (especially for its age). Not normally something I’d notice, but I played Rage right after playing Mass Effect Andromeda. What a breath of fresh air Rage proved to be.
    + Well-optimized on PC. Plays at a silky-smooth 60fps on my Radeon RX 470.

+/- Story works, but is hardly special. Our hero was locked in cryostasis when a threat to Earth materialized. The threat happened, we wake and enter the “new” world. We join a Resistance movement, fight bandits and Authority. Fairly standard stuff. Sequel-bait ending right as things are getting interesting. Rage is six years old. At the time of writing, there is no sequel in sight.
+/- Fun mini-games, but there aren’t enough of them, and they’re repeated in each city hub with no variation.
+/- The textures. Up close, they’re awful, some of the worst I’ve seen. Stand a back a bit, and they look amazing. Forcing 8k textures via a config file helps, but doesn’t solve the issue. Landscapes and vistas look impressive, but wall switches don’t.
+/- Racing seems shoe-horned into Rage. It’s a welcome change of pace, but it seems like it would be a waste of resources in a post-apocalyptical wasteland.
+/- No day / night cycle while you’re out in the wasteland.
+/- Almost all the women are hawt. It took an asteroid slamming into earth to turn almost every woman you meet into a model. But hey, I’m not complaining. Though it does feel a bit weird to rescue this one (hot) woman from bandits (who had tied her up in a very suggestive position); she then takes up residence in your trophy room as... one of your trophies?! Wtf.

    - Frame-rate is capped at 60. Unlocking it will require a mod (called “id5 Tweaker.”)
    - Level paths might be well-designed, but too often they feel tight and narrow.
    - There’s no point to crafting except to pad the gameplay. Why not stumble across grenades? You do a few times, but more often you’ll be looking for the four components needed to craft grenades.
    - There are a few bosses, but no final boss – surprising in an Id game.
    - Enemy AI is extremely predictable. Soldiers tend to stick behind cover; mutants will charge your position relentlessly. Once you know who you’re facing, combat rarely surprises.
    - Aside from your initial dune buggy, no customization options for your vehicles.
    - Not many enemies. Mutants, Authority, and bandits. That’s it.
    - Not a true open world. Hubs connected by corridors that you will traverse repeatedly, fighting the same re-spawning bandits over and over. Most buildings require a loading screen.
    - Fetch-quest missions. Most of the side-content is fetch-quest filler that frequently involves...
    - Re-used levels. Expect to play some levels twice. The second time is sometimes in reverse of the first time.
    - Awful mouse acceleration. There is a Mouse Sensitivity slider in the options that helps (there is partial controller support).
    - Alt-tabbing out of the game disables v-sync. After you alt-tab back into Rage, you’ll have to visit the options menu to turn it back on.

Rage turns out to be a mixed bag of good and not-so-good in nearly equal measure. It’s definitely possible to have some fun with it in a shoot-y sort of way, but it’s an “over fast, on to the next game” experience instead of wanting to immediately return to the world for another playthrough. I’d love to see a sequel – the world building is first-rate – but I hope we see more than a thin plot used as an excuse to shoot things in obviously re-used levels. There is real potential in the Rage franchise. As it stands, though, Rage is slightly above average - 6 /10.

Gunplay can be a mixed bag, theres some pretty cool weapons like nail gun which can have 2 other modifications, of which reebar shooter is probably my favorite gun in game, and theres guns like version of AK 47 which just doesnt feel fun play with. Enemies also are not the best to play against, mutants and other melee types who charge at you get really annoying even before mid game, only against gun wielding foes its fun to play and mess around.

Also calling the game open world is a big mistake, it only consist of corridors which connecting one hub or quest are to another. While graphics look really dated for a late 2011 release and seem to belong more like in 2007, the pretty nice art style makes up for it giving world some character and atmosphere. Also gotta give credit for really well animated, voiced and designed characters, some really stand out.

Performance wise game ran mostly well, only when you drive in your car game can have some annoying frame rate, issues, stutters and little freeze ups, when youre on foot in gunplay segments fps are solid only with some small freezes occuring rarely, nothing game breaking tho. The mega texture technology semt pretty stupid to me, even on texture cache higher setting if you pan the camera too fast you see texture streaming going, why such method was created is beyond me, it clearly made things worse than better compared to traditional methods.

In General, you can run the game for 6 hours, ending the movie for 10 seconds, with a reserve on the sequel and all.
Rage - can be described with this phrase from the very beginning of the game: Go and kill these bandits, it's simple.
    P. S. the Most important thing that you need to know playing in the Rage is that any weapon should have to buy better cartridges, otherwise it will be a long, dull shooting heads, cartridges for 10-20, and the machine so even the worst of it.

Decided to give this game a play after pre-ordering RAGE 2. Short story but enjoyable, plenty of collectibles and achievements. It's worth it, especially on sale. The ending is disappointing, but that's kind of a meme and isn't so bad if you know that going into it. The little nods to id's past games are obvious from the very beginning, so if you're a fan of DOOM, you'll enjoy that. This game has something for both racing and FPS fans alike. The graphics are TERRIBLE though by modern standards, there is a guide out there though on how to raise the texture quality in the files, so that helps immensely. Expand

A lot of missed opportunities and higher difficulty systems only make the enemies shooting bags, and give them an extra cringe ability to blindfire with 100% accuracy. Can't deny side missions were good, but repetitive. Can't believe the legendary id made this game in 2011 , which seems more outdated than the regular shooters of 2005. You can play it for time pass. Shooter with big role of vehicles, based in post-apocalyptic world which reminds Mad Max. Campaign for one player is rather short, there are few side activities - nothing special, nothing really exciting. Game tries to be a sandbox, but generally protagonist move from one (usually quite big) limited area to another. Shooting itself is quite nice, but not remarkable.

The game is pretty straight-forward. The amount of action is plentiful. It is engaging and hard.
It has beautiful level design and interiors, combat and voice acting.
The thing is, you shouldn't expect a great story or look for the origin of the character, it is an id software game after all.

I started rage with low expectations, maybe that was good because it surprised me positively. It's still a weak game, I don't understand where I wanted to go because it doesn't have such a wide range of weapons, a good world to explore, and it doesn't have a big main narrative focus either. And compared to Borderlands 2 for example, it is much inferior. (8.00)

The game touches with shooter mechanics - there are a lot of weapons, it's fun to shoot, mutants and bandits are dying in batches. But otherwise, RAGE is a strong middle peasant: we take a task in the city, buy ammunition and drive an arcade car through the "corridor" wasteland to the desired locations. Shooter locations are as narrow and corridor as wasteland,

Shooter locations are as narrow and corridor as wasteland,
all around invisible walls and at first it is wildly annoying. The game has crafting and some rare gadgets, but they are of little use. Between missions, you can play arcade races to upgrade your car or play cards in a bar for money or play other mini-games. It is better not to touch most of the additional tasks at all,
since in them you have to replay the already passed locations again. I can only recommend the game to big fans of shooters like me. It is best to buy at a discount and run on high difficulty on the plot, for 8 hours, without being distracted by additional boring little things.

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
