I just registered because I wanted to warn PC gamers. I'm using Win7 64 and the game freezes with every step I make for ~10 seconds, even the hardest fanboy couldn't play with that handicap. Also there are A LOT of texture pop-ups - if you turn, textures will take 2-3 seconds to fully load.

I also tried it to run under Ubuntu 11.10 64 (Linux) with wine 1.3.29, which ran much better - the textures loaded within less than 1 second (but they still pop-up), the freezes are gone, but now it crashes, wenn I enter the world and walk a few steps (after the first cutscene after exiting the ark is finished).

For 2 days now I nearly searched the whole internet and noticed, that there are tons of gamers having the same issues like me, and even more people having a lot of other issues, which make the game absolutely unplayable. I tried every workaround I could find on both, Windows and Linux, but nothing helped :/

I was a HUGE fan of id software and usually I'm ok with tinkering around for some games to work. But if there's absolutely no way of getting it to work fine, how can I give more than 0 points?

I'm sorry for this, but the people responsible for these issues need to get a slap.

The game works well, all maxed out 60fps, etc, but the textures looks ugly as hell and its all buggy. This feels like an unfinished product. An insult to those of us who been waiting 5 years.
ID Tech 5 is absolutely horrible, even Doom 3 looks better than this.

Please stay away from this horrible abomination, don't make the same mistake i did. Save your $60 bucks and spend it in some other game.

More bugs than a david attenborough nature documentary, utter stupid multiplayer modes (seriously they make a driving game the focus for multi on a FPS???) then make a 1gb patch a week after release that doesnt even fix most of the issues. The game looks like a piece of crap from 6 years ago even on a high end rig.

Extremely buggy, even with latest tuned drivers. This game was so overhyped, yet turned out to be a borderlands clone, but less enjoyable. Half my time was spent trying to get the game to run. Sorry Id, I won't be wasting another gaming dollar on your consolized ports.

I opened this account just to give this a big fat juicy zero...
it would have scored 3 based on content alone but it gets:
-1 for making me update both the game and the drivers twice just to be able to play it, -1 for happily taking my money for an unfinished product and
    -1 for a pathetic port.

i really really have to stop pre-ordering games...

First off, what did Rage get right? Well, graphically, it's pretty good. It's not -amazing-, there are better looking PC games. Welp, that's all for that section.

There's massive texture tearing issues, even on a high end PC that can run Crysis 2 on ultra you're going to have framerate issues, it's got more bugs than Daikatana, texture caching is completely broken, the story is unoriginal as hell, the game is way more linear than id's been claiming...

I'd advise against even getting it if it was free. It's near unplayable, and it'll hog around 20 gigs of space on your HDD. I think this might honestly be the worst big budget game I've seen in the last few years.

Pros: Decent NPC animations. Interesting mix of weapons/ammo. Good sound(except vehicles)
Cons: Minimal, irrelevant story. Unoriginal setting/scenario. Extremely linear level design . Average graphics when rendered properly. Predictable gameplay. No fun factor.
As a strict FPS it's standard fare. For me, the ending seemed to be a fitting match for my overall experience - uninspired.

After some patches that should have already been implemented on release, the game runs fairly well. Even this doesn't make up for Rage's shortcomings that are suppose to make the game/engine a technological marvel described by some. There is no dynamic lighting and barely any physics(this world feels so static I could get an electric shock and die while playing). Games using the Unreal 3 engine have more polished and interesting features than this game. The animations on the enemies are swell and all, but has anyone looked at the animations for the friendly NPCs that hand out quests? Did they forget to animate the entire lower section of the rig? It feels like those old 70s robots you find at Disneyland that just move around the upper part of their body and the rest is stationary to hold them in place. LOOKS REDICULOUS FOR SOMETHING THAT TOOK 7 YEARS TO DEVELOP. The art is awesome, and that is the only reason this game gets a 4 from me. The rest barely holds up to current AAA standards. If this game was sold for 39.99 brand new, I would have a lot more forgiveness, but being released for a full 60 dollar price tag brings shame to id. This game is nothing new and I bet there is no way in hell that this fantastically crappy megatexture technology id developed will be used by anyone in the near future, it has proven to be an utter waste of time unless all you want is pretty screenshots to put in your portfolio. Many graphics problems due to this, I tried using the help forums but it made my save game un-usable so i just tried unsuccessfully to ignore the awful texture popping. This game seems big for awhile until you realize its all empty space except for the, say 3-5extra locations you can explore. tho the game seems to think its much bigger, it tells you to explore and find things, all you find are enemies and ammunition, so its a moot search. Worst ending to a game ive seen in a long time, incredibly un-satisfying, there isnt even a boss or challenging situation it just ENDS with a few waves of identical mild enemies. many of the quests you do seem pointless, especially in the last area. you complete some preliminary quests, which led me to believe there would be alot more, but then they just stop and you are told to go fight the final battle for reasons not clearly defined.

Overall... Rage is the sad result of the modern game industry. Rushed, unpolished, overblown, unoriginal, and released with no responsibility or respect. Weapon control is terrible, it mostly feels like shooting BB ' at the enemy... The environments are visually stunning, but the extreme level of linearity prevents you from wondering away from "invisible-wall" protected path, overall ruining what "could have been" an exciting experience.
I cant say much about the story, its pretty insignificant. Limited/no character interaction in the story, no build ups, no smell of a plot twist in the air.. No smell of any plot at all tbh.
Let it be known for the record that I have yet to finish the entire game, but at this point, im not sure that I want to...

    Conclusion:

I would wait for Borderlands 2... I hardly think it will fail as bad.
Don't buy Rage unless you are prepared to be patching, fixing and tweaking away all evening, only to be rewarded with a facepalm.
I wouldn't say it's as bad as buying a bag of crap, but at least with the bag you don't have to get crap all over your hands.

For your hub-and-spoke mission system, there are *TWO* hubs, really closer to 1.5. Despite the vague whiff of an open world, the missions and story are entirely linear. The characters are caricatures. The driving is passable, but busywork (along with the occasional fetch quest). There are no choices, nor roleplaying. RAGE is trying to do too many things and none of them well really, except for the graphics which are amazing, but the world you play in is dead, and not because of the story dead in that all of the maps are completely static, all of the objects are stuck to the floor, no physics or objects being scattered after an explosion or anything to move around, you can't even jump ontop of objects below your waist. The entire world is off limits so to speak. You can basically move and look at things like a simulation but there's no real reason to explore, you may find a few hidden items like playing cards for the mini game or pieces used to build stuff but they're randomly placed and it's just not fun and that goes in to the map designs as well:

The maps are basically linear and you just go around shooting everythign until you loop back around to the end. There's very little variety in terms of enemy AI and placement, with the exception of the mutants but you can easily just walk over the invisible triggers in an area to make them jump out then run back in to a doorway to murder them all in a nice row, very not fun and annoying really.

The rest of the enemies are not fun either, they take way too many bullets to kill and the mutant characters don't even leave any loot to find, they just absorb bullets and return nothing which forces you to do other things that aren't fun like racing and playing card games or delivering mail to make extra money so you can trudge through the next mission fighting the same types of things in the same way.

To put rage in perspective HL2 came out in 2004 and offered the same type of post appo. world and did it right, the world while dead was completely alive, you broke things to open boxes, you solved puzzles to get around a map, enemies were varied and fun and the game has characters and story you give a **** about. As for the weapons, they're underpowered, all of them minus wing blade are worthless. the shotgun maybe not but it's only good close range and sometimes it doesn't kill the same two enemies with the same shot. Not sure whats the problem. Nothing is really that amazing you can change your ammo types but who cares, and you can hold up to 4 guns.

The game has some RPG elements which translates to wasting your time back tracking and pressing the activate key twice to listen to an NPC babble on until you get to the mission accept screen. It's tedious, especially when dealing with vendors, each time you need to listen to the idiot vendor tell you he buys and sells items, then you need to wait for him to finish talking before you can buy said items every single time you visit a vendor. It's absolutely retarded. The game really isn't all that inspiring, I'm about 1/4 of the way through the game and I could give a flying **** whether or not I ever beat this, I may just watch the endnig on youtube and call it a day. I kinda owe it to my wife to finish this turd because she bought it for me for christmas. Oh well, nice try ID but this could have been a linear shooter and it would have been much better.

Textures take time to load when you turn around. The plot is so insanely contrived its abysmal. The starting sequence is 'get out of pod, get attacked by previously invisible enemies, guy pulls you on a car after psychically knowing you were there and drives you home, doesn't offer you a drink or a rest.. puts a gun in your hand and says 'go kill' its insane and I think 10 year olds could write a more believable start to this game. After getting cut-scened to progress the plot (I despise cuts-cene defeats with the passion of a thousand suns) I just gave up.. its poorly wrote, buggy, has a counter intuitive UI and leaves you utterly frustrated at every turn.

The story is about as non-existent as I have ever seen in a game billed as an open world RPG. There are arcade shooters out there that spent more time working on dialog and story than Rage. Textures at short rage are terrible (I was using NVIDIA not ATI) so much so that is unforgiveable in a "AAA" title. Gameplay is extremly lame for a something billed as an RPG, there are no real choices you make in the game. Every map is a one way path with no choices or even abilities to get lost, ever! The ending is the lamest I have ever seen from a major developer. No boss, no story, not even a real challenge. Just a few enemies that wouldnt be out of place in any of the other maps. Kill them and then poof game over. Expand

The premise: Earth was clobbered by the Apophis asteroid (real rock, look it up for more info). Select survivors (including you) were buried in stasis in subterranean "arks," while the majority were left to enjoy a huge asteroid whacking the planet from the front-row seats. Nevertheless, there were survivors on the surface amid the destruction, and this is the world into which you emerge: blasted rubble, hardscrabble existence, and no shortage of conflict. So, great premise. Graphics are unbelievable, particularly the environments, vehicles, and especially the first-person weapon renders. Audio is great (SFX are top-notch). Writing is good (enough), voice acting very good. The crafting system for creating ammunition, tools, and weapons was clever and, amazingly, not tedious. So what went wrong? Well, in a word: id. Yeah, the old warhorse of FPS gaming, id Software (remember Doom? Them.) totally wrecked an otherwise grand game. Short story is that Rage suffers from ego poisoning. It's impossible to play for more than a few minutes before you run into another self-serving self-refence to another id game, be it Doom, Wolfenstein, or whatever. Look, I have no problem with easter-egg appearances. When I saw the space marine bobblehead on a dashboard within the first five minutes of gameplay, I thought "cool dev nod, nice." But after dozens of references, half of which were absolutely ridiculous, I spent more time rolling my eyes and getting mad at id than I did enjoying the game. (Seriously, there was a Doom hell prince as the texture for a COFFEE POT. Someone deserved to be slapped for that.) id's ego was out of control and disproportionally so; Bethesda Softworks snuck in one easter egg, a vaultboy bobblehead from Fallout, which was cool because it actually appeared in the original game, unlike the Doom hell prince which I don't think ever took up residence in small kitchen appliances. That aside, the game felt unfinished. Missions were clever and varied until the end, whereuoon the game took on an attitude of "we ran out of ideas, so here's some leftover 1990's style monster box gameplay and then we're gonna roll credits." Devs, take note, because this is what really screwed up Fallout 2: too many pop culture references. Game worlds, like film, are about suspension of disbelief. Keep bombarding the audiene with references and you blow that. Lose it and the experience suffers and the faults become far apparent. It's worth noting that I bought this game on the faith and belief in Bethesda's commitment to quality; by my experience, they'd never made a dud, and I had no reason to think they were going to start. One $60 mistake later and that trust was vapor. Six out of ten is very generous for this ego hodgepodge blended unevenly with an actual game...too generous. Make it five. Expand

I really enjoyed this game up until the end, where it just ended without any ability to continue playing the game. Not sure what was the point of upgrading vehicles, weapons and talk of how dangerous the authority is, when it was quite the opposite and saw really none of them. The ending of the game really made the journey through the entire game pointless.

Picking up items is tedius, shooting people is tedious, making things adds an extra step incase you werent bored enough, the maps are rehashed very early

The most fun I had was when I first killed an enemy because he jumped to the side and hopped on the cieling, and i realized there was not aquick meele button. The suck set in and now the only thing entertaining is crashing your buggy and flinging yourself into the mission.
The story is not engaging. There aren;t many "transition" animations where you get in a vehicle or grab a zipline, the screen just goes black sometimes, and that is really lazy. And for some reason when you shoot people in a town, blood gushes but nothing happens..
Lots of other problems but these jump out at me as actively deciding to not make a good game. I don't know why critics reviewed this so positively.

    - Length. It's so bad that a few hours of playing seems ages doing always the same.
    - Weapons. A few weapons are great fun, but it's not like you can use them often.

    The negative points :
    - Graphics. I don't have the very latest hardware available but it's still far above any console. Seriously low resolution textures everywhere when all is maxed out in options... ?
    - Lack of interesting things to do. It's all linear dungeon crawling. And you have to do each level twice, once normal and once in reverse. That's an artifact to cover the lack of content.
The Hub towns are trying to make you forget that you get all missions in a linear fashion. But it's not helping much really...
Racing cars has no interest and is dull, it's even too basic to be interesting in MP.
    - Gameplay. The same dated gameplay as in the old Doom, i.e. you fire all that you have at the opponent. No matter where you fire (head, legs...), a type of enemy has a certain amount of HP and you keep firing until you reduce these to zero, i.e. localisation of the hit will only change an animation, but not make more damage. Forget headshots. The only thing that changes how fast you kill an opponent is the type of ammo/damage that your weapon does.
    - Difficulty. Just based on how much opponent they send at you and how much you conserve ammo.
    - Art Direction / Concept Art. They really need to hire design artists that really can bring some concept art and some interesting scenario. Here it looks like a patchwork of ideas taken here and there, put together without any coherence in between.

In the end the only outstanding mission is the Dead City mission that we've all seen in the gamepkay trailers.
The rest is dull, it has no taste.
I don't even think I want to finish it...

First thing I noticed right out of the box was this game has THE worst screen-tearing I've ever seen in any game I've played. Tears pop up so frequently and are so big that they take a decent chunk of our screen. Next is the infamous texture pop-in which means textures don't load until you look at them. You don't need to have tech understanding to see how this sounds really stupid. What this means is that textures visually load when you look at them, so every time you go around a corner or move around everything is all blurry. Even when textures do load properly they still look low-res and everything is so under-saturated the game might as well be black and white. Add this to the fact that on release this game had NO graphics options of any description so all of the above was not fixable. This is by far the worst game I've played in a long time and one of the worst console ports I've ever seen. Expand

I like to think of myself as a moderate reviewer, but this game has angered me so much. It's probably my own fault, I expected more. I have a fairly powerful machine, yet this game chugged something awful pre patching. Still full of graphical bugs in my experience. I guess I was also disappointed by how short the game was and how UNimmersive it was. Just get Fallout 3 or New Vegas. Maybe it's a good game. But I'll never know, because it runs UNPLAYABLY badly on the PC port. I am hardly alone if you read the other user reviews. Consider yourself warned.

This game is just a tech demo of id's game engine, there are quests, an underlying fps matrix, vehicle riding, but what's missing entirely is the gameplay and my will to continue playing the game after 4 hours of utter boredom. I feel sorry for id's artists right now because they did a great job.

I DLed this from the App Store (£27) having heard it's similar to Borderlands. OMG what a mistake. Filled with technical glitches, which meant it took 2hrs to even get playing. Driver support for controllers is a nightmare; I lost count of the number of times I went through various processes, restarted my iMac, etc, etc, before finally getting the blasted thing to work. The game itself is filled with dire, dull, excruciatingly bland cut-scenes which cannot be skipped. Replete with characters it's tremendously hard to give a monkey's about, and who spiel out the most unutterably bland dialogue. "I'm a mechanic. You can fix your car here. Press Y to have me fix your car. You can also call me by radio..." Bluergh. I've taken to checking my emails / cutting away from Rage whilst the dull-as-ditchwater cutscenes play out. Gameplay is uninspiring. The RPG / upgradeable element is almost non-existent. 'Choose one of four armour suits, which'll give you a static benefit throughout the game.' Great. Firing weapons is remarkably tedious: all weapons have 100% predictable stats (unlike Borderlands), with crosshairs that *do not waver one inch*, even in hyper-zoomed sniper rifle mode. There's no element of chance, either; every weapon (even the pistol) hits 100% if your entirely stable crosshairs are 100% on the target. Bleurgh. Silent weapons - afaict, and having completed the single campaign - are utterly pointless, bringing no benefits whatsoever. Even the potentially interesting weapons - like mind control bolts - turn out to be futile 95% of the time, and only marginally less useful than usual bullets the other 5%. AI is dull. Everyone behaves the same. Everyone seeks exactly the same cover points: keep throwing grenades until everything's obliterated. Things only get remotely interesting in the later levels, with LARGE hordes of melee fighters. Penultimately, the racing rapidly switches between ridiculously easy and a matter of raw luck; the 'driving' aspect of the game only brings 4 cars with it, each of which have a very finite number of worthwhile upgrades. Finally, the campaign is chuffing tiny. Like, 11hrs and 20 minutes in - and I thought I was taking things slowly - I've finished a 'normal' campaign. Replay value feels minimal, though I'm trying to gather the inspiration to have a go at 'hard' or 'nightmare.' Compare that with Borderlands - the best part of a year on, I've got 2 characters running the various campaigns, with well over 60hrs of gameplay between them. I was kinda stunned when I realised I'd finished Rage, in a very much 'is that ACTUALLY it?!' kinda way. On any replays, I'll look for a bit more in the way of side missions / exploring... but I get the feeling there isn't much there. All in all, vapid, dull, characterless, bland. Beautiful scenery. But - good grief - I really can't understand why anyone would choose this over Borderlands. Or even Bioshock (or Bioshock 2, soon to be released). Particularly on a Mac, at the moment, Rage is nowhere near worth it. Expand

Unplayable with a Ati Radeon HD 6790 graphics card, you have to downgrade to driver version 11.8 to be able to play. This game is more trouble than it's worth.

Nice looking, but a bit slow in action and way too buggy. It is amazing that this game was released as it was - with major problems on very common video cards - but it is even worse that several months after the release major problems exist.

Simply unsatisfying. It had potential and it had hype. Neither were anywhere near fulfilled. Admittedly it does have those little things that make you believe when you hear about it, but when you see that it isn't all that developed you get doubly let down.
You can easily have fun with the game, but the entire multiplatform business ruined what could have been a real gem.

    Except I couldn't.
Because the launch was so bug-filled it took several days to work out the problems with my ATI card, which at the time (HD 6970) was one of the best ATIs on the market. But alas, the problems plagued it.
When I finally managed to get onto the game, again, the textures kept popping, screen tearing even with VSync on, etc. It was terrible.
I think I left the game for a while, waited for a big patch or two, then came back to it eagerly. The first two-three hours of gameplay were quite enjoyable, but quickly I began to tire. The same repetitive scenes with repetitive enemies were boring, I expected a more open-world sort of thing, like Borderlands, instead of the enclosed canyon walls. If there is more than that, I didn't get up to that because I never finished the game.
The weapons were another thing that annoyed me. Although I did love the wingstick, and the grenades/throwing items in general were cool, the shooting element was terrible. The assault rifle was terrible. It took damn near two magazines to kill someone! Although it /may/ have been some bad marksmanship on my part, it still took ages to kill people. The driving was a decent element, the races were pretty fun half the time, I guess. The crafting element was interesting too.

But overall, it could have been a much better game. The gameplay was repetitive and got boring very quickly, plagued by graphics problems, and even now I think my card struggles slightly due to bad optimization. The only thing that prevents me from rating this a solid 0 is the fact it's a decent attempt, some parts of the game are fun, although the story had me completely lost very quickly. Although the post-apocalyptic genre/theme has a lot of scope and if pulled off correctly, could become a fantastic game comparable to legends like Fallout, and Borderlands, but RAGE doesn't come close.
    I expected much more, iD.

Any other open world game came out 1~2 years ago can beat Rage's graphic, this is nothing but disappointing to see id failed on the PC like this, which was supposed to be their primary platform.

And the story is just plain and uninspired, I have no urge to keep playing after the first few missions, the world is dull, the characters are dull, and everything looks very dull. There's nothing driving me forward. Unlike Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, both sucked me in for weeks, even months, not even counting the DLCs by the way.

In the end, I just don't see any reason you would want to play this game, I don't see any merits in this game. Mind you this is very rare for me, I usually do find some small things that's worth noting in some very bad games, but in this case, Rage simply have nothing for me to recommend to others, so sorry to say this, but don't buy this game. Play Fallout or Elder Scroll series, that's the kind of open world game you would want to play.

For a long time, I was surprised with RAGE, his images show a game visually compatible with the feeling that quake caused on me, look something new. It was a long download on Steam, where I bought the game. I confess that the texture cause less problems using a nvidia gpu, but the lag occurs. Was just the beginning of the frustration.
After thousands of interviews, the good and bad sides of the new engine second John Carmack, the PC as the best visual and the product selling as the best game ever made by id! I finally bought RAGE. I bought 70% of advertising.. yes, advertising is the real seller always. Because the final product is just half of the real deal. In 10 hours, all cards, itens and quests done.. minigames and races, please...
The best looking game! is just a pile of low res with more closed doors, than options.
    Again, the game is disposable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was brilliant. The way it started, the way the story was told and everything else about it was simply faultless! The towns are fantastic, the graphics are unbelievable and enemy AI is pretty decent. The story of the game is quite thrilling as well. Yet it has one crucial fault that makes me rate it the way I have.

The Ending. Its horrible, beyond comprehension. I"literally went "wtf just happened here?" as the credits began to roll. They ruined a marvellous game by being lazy and pushing out the game before it was ready. When I went to the last mission, I had no idea that it was the last mission. I was expecting a huge ass boss with atleast 15 mins of incredibly fast paced lobbing of grenades and bullets and maybe my brother at it to kill it. But I was greeted with a small horde of mutants and 3 buttons. Yes thats right, the glorious boss fight at the end of the game is against 3 buttons. They werent even that tough to push to be honest. There wasnt enough of the game to justify its 20gig+ size! They have somehow setup the end to signal the coming of a sequel or DLC's, but the fact is that after such a horrible experience, I will never buy anything from this game again.

If you are a fan of endings that appeal to common sense, do not buy this crap.

'ID tech 5' was actually just a slightly suped up bulletstorm engine and was used badly. The graphics are medioca at best with many glitches, boring combat and although there are a hell of a lot of weapons, they all seem a bit, samey. Co-op was also un-surprisingly boring with hour after hour of banging one's head against the wall trying to ****ing defibrillate yourself to life.

Ok, its not that short if you are one of those people that like to get out the car look around and stop and smell the roses kind of guy like i am. I love looking at the universe of everything and taking everything in in a game. A game like COD which is really short, will still take me a little longer because i read everything and kind of stop and smell the roses.

The game starts your in an ark, you leave, go to nearest town attack some stuff, do a couple of missions check a sewer leave town, go to next town do a couple of missions do a few races fight the bad guys called Authority, open a satalite beacon thing, some things come out of the ground, that i guess have been in the earth for ages and its over. Ive gamed for a LONG long time, but i have to say what happened? Did they run out of money? it took 7 years to make this.

But the biggest question is, how did the guys at gearbox make Borderlands in 3-4 years with MASSIVE amount of content, tons of towns, heaps to do and tons of characters, monsters, interesting stuff and RAGE took 7 years and ......

Ok seriously, if you want this game, buy it for the IDSoftware deal on STEAM or something, RAGE will likely be included in the IDSoftware complete package at Xmas or something. But i warn you you will play it, get to the 2nd town and then get to the end and think, right the 3rd town(whatever it is, must be the last town and i'll get a finale.

YOU WILL BE SHOCKED when you get to the end.

IM saying this now, CALL OF DUTY the Modern warfare trilogy 1-3 was a MILLION times better than this game. Im serious. this has probably been really incoherant, because im still shocked at the ending of RAGE. People that say they werent surprised. DOOM had an ending ok? Even just the text at the end of Doom 1 or 2 was a better ending than this. Im serious.

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
