The PC version is garbage, riddled with bugs, terrible porting causing shockingly low FPS and streaming textures at every direction. After some patches that should have already been implemented on release, the game runs fairly well. Even this doesn't make up for Rage's shortcomings that are suppose to make the game/engine a technological marvel described by some. There is no dynamic lighting and barely any physics(this world feels so static I could get an electric shock and die while playing). Games using the Unreal 3 engine have more polished and interesting features than this game. The animations on the enemies are swell and all, but has anyone looked at the animations for the friendly NPCs that hand out quests? Did they forget to animate the entire lower section of the rig? It feels like those old 70s robots you find at Disneyland that just move around the upper part of their body and the rest is stationary to hold them in place. LOOKS REDICULOUS FOR SOMETHING THAT TOOK 7 YEARS TO DEVELOP. The art is awesome, and that is the only reason this game gets a 4 from me. The rest barely holds up to current AAA standards. If this game was sold for 39.99 brand new, I would have a lot more forgiveness, but being released for a full 60 dollar price tag brings shame to id. This game is nothing new and I bet there is no way in hell that this fantastically crappy megatexture technology id developed will be used by anyone in the near future, it has proven to be an utter waste of time unless all you want is pretty screenshots to put in your portfolio. The game should really be called "look but don't touch". RAGE is trying to do too many things and none of them well really, except for the graphics which are amazing, but the world you play in is dead, and not because of the story dead in that all of the maps are completely static, all of the objects are stuck to the floor, no physics or objects being scattered after an explosion or anything to move around, you can't even jump ontop of objects below your waist. The entire world is off limits so to speak. You can basically move and look at things like a simulation but there's no real reason to explore, you may find a few hidden items like playing cards for the mini game or pieces used to build stuff but they're randomly placed and it's just not fun and that goes in to the map designs as well:

The maps are basically linear and you just go around shooting everythign until you loop back around to the end. There's very little variety in terms of enemy AI and placement, with the exception of the mutants but you can easily just walk over the invisible triggers in an area to make them jump out then run back in to a doorway to murder them all in a nice row, very not fun and annoying really.

The rest of the enemies are not fun either, they take way too many bullets to kill and the mutant characters don't even leave any loot to find, they just absorb bullets and return nothing which forces you to do other things that aren't fun like racing and playing card games or delivering mail to make extra money so you can trudge through the next mission fighting the same types of things in the same way.

To put rage in perspective HL2 came out in 2004 and offered the same type of post appo. world and did it right, the world while dead was completely alive, you broke things to open boxes, you solved puzzles to get around a map, enemies were varied and fun and the game has characters and story you give a **** about. As for the weapons, they're underpowered, all of them minus wing blade are worthless. the shotgun maybe not but it's only good close range and sometimes it doesn't kill the same two enemies with the same shot. Not sure whats the problem. Nothing is really that amazing you can change your ammo types but who cares, and you can hold up to 4 guns.

The game has some RPG elements which translates to wasting your time back tracking and pressing the activate key twice to listen to an NPC babble on until you get to the mission accept screen. It's tedious, especially when dealing with vendors, each time you need to listen to the idiot vendor tell you he buys and sells items, then you need to wait for him to finish talking before you can buy said items every single time you visit a vendor. It's absolutely retarded. The game really isn't all that inspiring, I'm about 1/4 of the way through the game and I could give a flying **** whether or not I ever beat this, I may just watch the endnig on youtube and call it a day. I kinda owe it to my wife to finish this turd because she bought it for me for christmas. Oh well, nice try ID but this could have been a linear shooter and it would have been much better.

Pros: Decent NPC animations. Interesting mix of weapons/ammo. Good sound(except vehicles)
Cons: Minimal, irrelevant story. Unoriginal setting/scenario. Extremely linear level design . Average graphics when rendered properly. Predictable gameplay. No fun factor.
As a strict FPS it's standard fare. For me, the ending seemed to be a fitting match for my overall experience - uninspired.

Once again disappointed by a release I was looking forward to(this and Brink).

You're kicked out of of this pod you were cryogenically suspended in and you're not told a damn thing about why you were there or what happened and this is a theme that runs throughout the game.

I get the feeling that Rage is nothing more than John Carmack needing more money to fund his Rocket ships and he doesn't personally give a damn about this game except to churn out the engine and critical success is a bonus.

More bugs than a david attenborough nature documentary, utter stupid multiplayer modes (seriously they make a driving game the focus for multi on a FPS???) then make a 1gb patch a week after release that doesnt even fix most of the issues. The game looks like a piece of crap from 6 years ago even on a high end rig.

Nice looking, but a bit slow in action and way too buggy. It is amazing that this game was released as it was - with major problems on very common video cards - but it is even worse that several months after the release major problems exist.

It was too short!!! The game once textures were fixed was ok. It just wasnt how they represented the game to be. I expected a game about Fallout 3 in length. This game was done in a day. Very repetitive and so totally on rails that there was no choices really to be made. Its pretty but this did feel more like a tech demo of see how pretty we can make a world.

Gameplay. From playing for a few hours, the AI mobs are great; combat rolls, wall bounding, general dodging to avoid my aiming. The quest line at the beginning was confusing; some guy rescues you and asks you to rescue the town? Why did you put your neck out in the first place? Perhaps that will be revealed later. No world or region map; just a small minimap in the upper corner. Voice acting is pretty good. Quests have been the typical go here, do this, come back for a reward and the advancement of the story. The game is very beautiful, just had to say that again (the only great thing going for it).
Many people are saying it is a console port; I can believe it because the menu, graphical interface options are all very limited when compared to other computer games. I would suggest all PC buyers wait until a price drop to buy the game, console buyers would probably be fine with purchasing the game as it currently is.

Upgraded in preparation for what i thought was going to be one of the best games of 2011.
Gameplay starts fun but when the boredom sets in you get to wishing that Rage at least had good graphics going for it ... and unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case.
I'm giving Doom 4 a skip as i don't trust ID Software to produce quality.

I have to ask myself while i play this game, does ID remember it made Doom? Because at the end after you go through a pretty decent shooting fest, theres no boss. NO smiggin boss at the end of an ID game!

ID Software, For all we've been through, DooM, DooM 2, Doom 3... The graphics is beautiful and flourish, best performance I ever have seen compared with graphics. But the game is pretty easy And since it's the creators of doom, I had expected some more bosses, You have big guns, but you can actually complete the game with only pistol and the machine gun.

Since many of the graphic issues have been fixed here is my take on the CURRENT state of the game.
    1. Too short - 8-10 hours of game play max for single player even if you suck at racing
    2. Graphics are STILL not top notch for a PC game. The excuse that it is designed mostly for consoles is inexcusable. If you are designing for a console only, leave it there. 3. Nice weapon and ammo

The premise: Earth was clobbered by the Apophis asteroid (real rock, look it up for more info). Select survivors (including you) were buried in stasis in subterranean "arks," while the majority were left to enjoy a huge asteroid whacking the planet from the front-row seats. Nevertheless, there were survivors on the surface amid the destruction, and this is the world into which you emerge: blasted rubble, hardscrabble existence, and no shortage of conflict. So, great premise. Graphics are unbelievable, particularly the environments, vehicles, and especially the first-person weapon renders. Audio is great (SFX are top-notch). Writing is good (enough), voice acting very good. The crafting system for creating ammunition, tools, and weapons was clever and, amazingly, not tedious. So what went wrong? Well, in a word: id. Yeah, the old warhorse of FPS gaming, id Software (remember Doom? Them.) totally wrecked an otherwise grand game. Short story is that Rage suffers from ego poisoning. It's impossible to play for more than a few minutes before you run into another self-serving self-refence to another id game, be it Doom, Wolfenstein, or whatever. Look, I have no problem with easter-egg appearances. When I saw the space marine bobblehead on a dashboard within the first five minutes of gameplay, I thought "cool dev nod, nice." But after dozens of references, half of which were absolutely ridiculous, I spent more time rolling my eyes and getting mad at id than I did enjoying the game. (Seriously, there was a Doom hell prince as the texture for a COFFEE POT. Someone deserved to be slapped for that.) id's ego was out of control and disproportionally so; Bethesda Softworks snuck in one easter egg, a vaultboy bobblehead from Fallout, which was cool because it actually appeared in the original game, unlike the Doom hell prince which I don't think ever took up residence in small kitchen appliances. That aside, the game felt unfinished. Missions were clever and varied until the end, whereuoon the game took on an attitude of "we ran out of ideas, so here's some leftover 1990's style monster box gameplay and then we're gonna roll credits." Devs, take note, because this is what really screwed up Fallout 2: too many pop culture references. Game worlds, like film, are about suspension of disbelief. Keep bombarding the audiene with references and you blow that. Lose it and the experience suffers and the faults become far apparent. It's worth noting that I bought this game on the faith and belief in Bethesda's commitment to quality; by my experience, they'd never made a dud, and I had no reason to think they were going to start. One $60 mistake later and that trust was vapor. Six out of ten is very generous for this ego hodgepodge blended unevenly with an actual game...too generous. Make it five. Expand

I really enjoyed this game up until the end, where it just ended without any ability to continue playing the game. Not sure what was the point of upgrading vehicles, weapons and talk of how dangerous the authority is, when it was quite the opposite and saw really none of them. The ending of the game really made the journey through the entire game pointless.

The plot could easily have been developed into a solid new post-apocalyptic franchise, but there's no development of the characters beyond a few intro quests. Even the main story line feels clipped, like they stopped at chapter 15 of book with 30 or more chapters. I really loved this game until it became clear that nothing about it would be fully developed, and the restriction of multi-player content to a small number of co-op levels and vehicle races prevents it from having any replay value. It feels almost like I was duped into paying for a tech demo. And the lack of response from the developer and publisher is maddening. The promised level editor never showed up. The 64-bit exe and high res texture pack for PC never showed. And even though they promised DLC 'soon' after release, they're still refusing to confirm if it even exists nearly eight months later. Except I couldn't.
Because the launch was so bug-filled it took several days to work out the problems with my ATI card, which at the time (HD 6970) was one of the best ATIs on the market. But alas, the problems plagued it.
When I finally managed to get onto the game, again, the textures kept popping, screen tearing even with VSync on, etc. It was terrible.
I think I left the game for a while, waited for a big patch or two, then came back to it eagerly. The first two-three hours of gameplay were quite enjoyable, but quickly I began to tire. The same repetitive scenes with repetitive enemies were boring, I expected a more open-world sort of thing, like Borderlands, instead of the enclosed canyon walls. If there is more than that, I didn't get up to that because I never finished the game.
The weapons were another thing that annoyed me. Although I did love the wingstick, and the grenades/throwing items in general were cool, the shooting element was terrible. The assault rifle was terrible. It took damn near two magazines to kill someone! Although it /may/ have been some bad marksmanship on my part, it still took ages to kill people. The driving was a decent element, the races were pretty fun half the time, I guess. The crafting element was interesting too.

But overall, it could have been a much better game. The gameplay was repetitive and got boring very quickly, plagued by graphics problems, and even now I think my card struggles slightly due to bad optimization. The only thing that prevents me from rating this a solid 0 is the fact it's a decent attempt, some parts of the game are fun, although the story had me completely lost very quickly. Although the post-apocalyptic genre/theme has a lot of scope and if pulled off correctly, could become a fantastic game comparable to legends like Fallout, and Borderlands, but RAGE doesn't come close.
    I expected much more, iD.

There are some minor frame rate drops here and there, some texture pop-ins, but overall the performance is passable, so at least id took the horrible release problems into account. Now, a friend of mine told me about "Rage" about a year ago, but I never really looked into it until recently. I had just completed "Borderlands" and I was curious if there were other games, which attempted this interesting mixture of open world and FPS (besides the new "Fallout" games) and this game came to my attention. To my surprise, it was made by id, the company which started the FPS genre in the first place. Despite the mixed reviews, I decided to give the game a chance. Perhaps, I thought, it was the poor release that spoiled may gamers' experience. The first impression the game made on me was a good one, suspenseful opening cutscene, intriguing visual design, especially when it comes to NPCs, however the game's numerous flaws quickly become apparent and at a certain point you come to a disappointing conclusion- the game is simply not fun. It's like a big, shiny firecracker that turns out to be a dud. The first thing you are going to notice is that the game doesn't even make an attempt at a story, or any promising development and immediately turns into a string of uninspired kill x, fetch x, bring x to y quests, even less varied than in "Borderlands" .Now I'm not saying I expected a movie grade masterpiece here, but come on, what was the point of that suspenseful CG cutscene if it doesn't amount to anything but a bunch of fetch/kill quests. Regardless of much money they spent on that cutscene, it was better spent elsewhere. Characters look interesting, but are bland as vanilla ice cream. Just soulless husks that give you quests. You will probably remember their distinct features instead of their names (the guy with the green shades, the chick with the boomerang and so on) . Your main character, however, has the most uninspired look you could think. He really, really reminds me of another equally uninspired d*ck - James Vega from " Mass Effect 3" and that is someone who I really don't want to remember. Oh and hes is mute and has no free will, no surprise there. But it's a FPS, you won't be seeing much of him. Characters and plot are not crucial to a good FPS, however- the combat and game mechanics are the meat of the game. Well, the combat was a mixed bag for me. Since "Rage" was made by veterans of the FPS genre, I expected an oldschool, fast paced Shooter with greater freedom for exploration. Well tough luck, the game is a MODERN FPS through and through. It has it all - the regenerating health, reliance on cover. Now, at least the execution was okay, combat feels fluent, more fast-paced than most tactical first person shooters. Ammo types were a nice addition. The weapons were a huge disappointment for me - a sawed-off shotgun, a magnum revolver, an AK, this is the best they could come up with? One of the most important elements of any good FPS game is having access to an arsenal of badass guns, the more unique the weapons are, the more memorable the game is.Probably the only creatively designed weapon was the boomerang, which wasn't really a weapon, just secondary equipment. Another big issue was the difficulty. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, but nightmare,as i found out was the optimal difficulty for me. And i still refrained from using med-packs. Exploration is very minimal, I wouldn't even compare it to "Borderlands" (which had a lot of corridor sections), it's more like the you get in "Bioshock". The only difference is that the corridors are longer, so you're forced to use the game's vehicles, which, to be honest, were ok in terms of handling, but I felt they were just there for padding out the game. Speaking of that, the game is rather short, you' ll probably clock in at around 14 hours with most side activities done. There is almost no character progression. You can unlock schematics for the engineering system, which feels tacked-on and completely pointless. I hate the UI, I really do. Now this may seem like nitpicking, but it becomes progressively more and more annoying as you play the game. The design of the interface looks incredibly bland with a tint of putrid green as an added bonus, unnecessary mouse acceleration that can only be turned off by fiddling with .ini filie, horrible and very console-focused inventory/equip system, they basically did a CnP from "Borderlands", reversed the layout and added a new tab for junk items. Overall "Rage" wasn't really a bad game. It just feels very underdeveloped (despite the long development cycle) and unsure exactly what it wants to be. There is little replay value, due to the low difficulty and lack of character development/ equipment variety/ exploration. Expand

What’s even sadder is that even if the graphics were on par with the console versions, the game would still fall flat. Regardless of what version you are playing, you will be given a very lackluster game which tried to be so much more than the sum of its parts, but falls flat. This is a mission based shooter where you are given a quest, and must ride your vehicle to the right base and shoot everyone in your way to complete it. You slowly upgrade your load out to be better at completing these quests. It is the same thing all the time though and because there is very little overarching story, you never feel compelled to do as you are told and carry out whatever you must do. It is not much of an open world either, so it’s not like you can ignore the quests you don’t like and play as you wish at your own rhythm. The fact that there is little freedom and yet asks that you travel from every mission back to a base kills any momentum and pacing the story may have. This would have worked much better as a linear corridor shooter (like Bulletstorm) or a truly open world shooter/RPG (like Borderlands) but instead we have something attempting to be a bit of both yet lacks the strengths of either. Imagine a less open Borderlands 2 with much less class, character and load out customization with no world map and devoid of humour or personality and you get Rage. And if you are playing on PC then add horrid texture pop in issues to that.
I will give it one thing though, this is the best AI I ever faced this side of Binary Domain. I was very impressed with how aware the enemy AI was of my tactics and their reactions to my actions (like dodging or ducking when they see me aim or raise my weapon). I would have loved to face this AI in a better game.

I completely lost interest after just a couple hours.... and I'm not one to just leave a game unfinished. Although the shooty side of the game was relatively satisfying, the missions were redundant. The story is immediately disengaging. The town and characters are like Borderlands 2 clones... I'm serious... it's remarkable how similar they are. Crafting is clunky and unenjoyable. Some missions send you to the same place several times to kill the same guys only for a different quest item. It's, actually, a lot like playing a more realistic looking Borderlands but without all things that made it fun.... Expand

Doom meets Borderlands & Mad Max. Most of the time, the combat is a broken mess, Buttons won't always react when you press them, and the whole combat mechanics are just awful. The enemies take way too much bullets to die and they have near perfect aim, they will rarely miss. The difficulty is insane but in a bad way, in an artificial way, which feels very boring. No health bar, so the health probably regenerates by itself. The pc port is a complete joke, it feels untested, and there are many invisible walls that will prevent you for exploring the world. The combat shotgun feels very weak as well as the pistol. The enemies voice acting is atrocious, enemies won't shut the **** up while in combat, and gets boring and repetitive very quickly. The quests are mediocre at best. Just go to a place, get something and come back, there are not even different paths or different results, just point A to point B, which on paper is not bad but here is poorly implemented. While the game has some good things, the majority of things are pretty bad, one of the worst ID games ever made

No memorable moments just a lot of running around with your favorite gun tried to avoid mutants. No real engaging characters/relationships... which is really an expectation these days. I did not enjoy the racing aspect of the game, and being left handed, I had issues mapping some keys which killed some of the joy... Save your eyes. Save your money.

When textures aren't popping in turning you into an epileptic, the game looks great. Seems like it would be a fun game. Probably a bit short, though I've barely played. Supposedly the competitive multiplayer car races have been likened to Mario Kart. I wouldn't know. My eyes are strained to the max after playing the first mission. Half hour later they still hurt. It's not just flickering, there's all sorts of weird artifacts. From seems like a page of text is blinking on screen, to like a red laser sight appearing out of nowhere, yet has nothing to do with my gun or anyone else's. Weird black blocks of all sorts of sizes, and not limited to box shape popping in or out.

It's supposed to be low capped for it's frames at 60 and work around that. Well my i7 920, 6gb 1600mhz ddr3, and ATI 5850 gets about 25-35 while running around, and when still it goes back up to about 60. This is without the eye candy on (what little you can mess around with).

Even has a problem when you move around the edges load up late, even close up stuff. Also this makes me pretty lucky, since many people can't even get the game to load up, or have it crash after playing 10 minutes.

Lots of rage going on with people with uber rigs getting poor framerates as well.

It's having problems on ATI and Nvidia. I'm sure I've only described some of the problems. Will they patch it? Supposedly yes. Will it fix the problems? Who the hell knows. 60 bucks for a pc game, and not one whiff of this obvious MAJOR problem from review sites right before launch = fraud.

This turd, just like so many others this year, (here's looking to you Duke Puke'em) had glaringly obvious problems ignored by the reviewers observing fascist unamerican blackouts on reviews until after the game released. I didn't preorder months or even weeks in advance, merely 30 minutes - 3 hours before launch, and in both cases, the early 'paid' or 'special' reviews ignored all the obvious problems, if they even came out at all (i.e. pc ones delayed so you had to read the console ones first). When they showed us their gameplay video, of course none of these issues were in them.

It's just sad that no one spoke up about these turds like RAGE before they were released. This is something that should of came out weeks ago, saving lots of people money.

I waited until the last second to see some reviews or whatever to trip up. But when you don't see these things in them, you think, hey it'll be a game that works or whatever. I also hear some console players are getting some weird stuff too. But hey gotta pay off those wall street loans, and the only way the board sees it possible is to get the turd out before the other games launch, rather than actually fix the game before launch. Also probably would hurt bonuses.

Wait for a working patch. If one doesn't arrive, do not buy this game. If one does, it would be a decent game, and worthy of a 3/5 or perhaps a 7/10. That's still a decent, and fun game. But for now, my eyes still hurt, and I won't be playing this much until it gets fixed. Shame on iD. As it stands now, turn the game on, turn on some music, mix a drink, and enjoy the strobe light club experience in your own home. This broken eye straining turd gets a 3 out of 10. I would give it a 4, but physical pain knocks it down another point. If the gunplay and the graphical art design wasn't fun, it would score a lot lower.

anyways. the weapons i saw so far seemed crappy and unimaginative. same goes for the few characters and bad guys who now seem more stiff (maybe bethesda's influence)... seriously, a shambler had way more SOUL and fluidity than all of the characters combined. the ATV i drove to my first mission was lame and pointless as was killing the bad guys for no apparent reason.

Textures still pop-in from time to time, unexplained graphical glitches are commonplace and the occasional crash-to-desktop from a loading screen still occur. Enough about that though, most of the negative reviews cover that well enough. The game itself is... decent. The actual shooting portion is engaging, though super easy - you are functionally immortal due to regenerating health AND on-demand medikits. Really?? Add in a cover system and you've got the trifecta. The enemies are pretty cool, and levels are a blast to play through.... the first time. Rage commits a cardinal sin in a game by padding content with maps you play though normally, then return and play through them again either reversed or with sections blocked off. It was unacceptable in Dragon Age 2, and it's unacceptable here. The racing/driving portions are fun enough but controls are odd if you don't play with a gamepad. All in all Rage could have been a much better game without the design shortcuts and if it had actual bug testing before launch. As it stands the game doesn't have enough content (roughly 15 hours if you do all sidequests and run every race) to warrant dropping $60. If you absolutely must play it, wait until the price drops to $20-$30 probably next month. I'm uninstalling as I write this. Expand

Just damn, man. I am honestly not the type of gamer who stops playing a game and uninstalls it in dissatisfaction. I read lots of reviews on here that say "uninstalled it in x minutes" or whatever, and I normally discount those because I don't feel they gave the game a fair chance or are exaggerating from an emotional place rather than an analytical one for critical effect, but that's what happened here.

Rage felt extremely out of date. Oh sure, the graphics were all right, and I don't require any real per-requisites from more "modern" games. I don't need a cover system or perks or a level system grafted onto my shooters. I don't need a huge Half-Life story or an amazing new gameplay concept. I just need a game that's entertaining on some level, that has some flow, that grabs me in some way. Rage just did not do that, and I have a feeling that if it had come out alongside Doom 20 years ago, I would have felt the same way. I can't think of anything about the game that's compelling. I wish I could elaborate more on that, but I'm not sure how to explain it.

Everything this game does, some other game that's out or has been out for quite some time does much, much better. Some of those games are some of ID's own. Everything from the environments, to the enemies, to the gunplay, to the racing, to the story, to the exploration, is done better in almost any other FPS I've played.

If I tried to recommend this game to anyone, despite the fact that it didn't grab me or fit my personal preferences, I don't know who I would recommend it to. Someone who's never played an FPS before, I guess? Even then I'd want their first experience to at least be a bit more endearing, but I guess they'd at least play it for more than hour or two.

Sorry Rage, really wanted to like ya. I paid money for you, after all.

    The Bad

25Gb install size and all I get are blurry textures. Spin around too fast and the LOD is a split second behind. You will actually see ultra blurry textures. It's only for a split second but it is detracting from the realism of the game.

    The Ugly

Don't be fooled by the "auto detect your hardware to maintain 60fps." That's just market speak for "Console Port." The menus are clunky, mouse is erratic when turning down sensitivity to low (essential for the 5600 DPI gamers out there), and no graphic settings. On a 570 the textures are on par with Crysis on Medium. I know it's 60 fps but who wants to play that when I could boot up Time crysis. Now there is an epic scale to the game, the vistas are downright gorgeous from afar, but it only gives the illusion of scale. The fact is, the game is linear through and through. And when it isn't, it's because it's sending you to backtrack for fetch quests.

This game is prolly awesome for the ageing consoles. But the PS2-like textures on a high end graphics card is a deal breaker. If they the gamers are allowed to see those high res textures, this game could have been better, but as is, it just appears to be a waste of 25 gigs.

    Was this game ever tested?

Graphics would be good, borderland style, if we could pay attention to backgrounds but it seriously hurt my eyes when i concentrate on something else that my own gun.
Im trying hard to find positive points to this game, but i finished 2 quests and im already bored since we are now used to better quality.
Im really disapointed that bethesda is involved in a game without choice making. I got used to games like Elder scrolls and Fallout and i was expecting something in the same category. All i received with Rage is an even more buggy game even if i experienced ctd and corrupted save games with these other titles.
I won't be hasty next time i see bethesda softworks as the publisher.
And if someone is still wondering if he should buy this, even with all these bad reviews, i would STRONGLY suggest to get a console version and wait for a BIG SALE. This game is not even close to a 60 bucks value. Maybe a 10$ that is all.

I am about 45 minutes in and I have uninstalled it. I would compare this to Duke Nukem Forever. Here are some of it's problems:
    - Unlimited amount of bad guys pour out of doors at times unless you progress forward. This took away from any kind of strategy and felt like a Nintendo game from the 80's. -The game is extremely linear. -Confusing UI.
-Horrible story so far. There is zero character development. -Missions are confusing as you have to collect items and you don't know how many items you have collected so far.

The most fun I had was when I first killed an enemy because he jumped to the side and hopped on the cieling, and i realized there was not aquick meele button. The suck set in and now the only thing entertaining is crashing your buggy and flinging yourself into the mission.
The story is not engaging. There aren;t many "transition" animations where you get in a vehicle or grab a zipline, the screen just goes black sometimes, and that is really lazy. And for some reason when you shoot people in a town, blood gushes but nothing happens..
Lots of other problems but these jump out at me as actively deciding to not make a good game. I don't know why critics reviewed this so positively.

    - The open world consists of nothing more than a series of three 'areas', which in themselves offer nothing more than the ability to drive by the 'levels' and enter them straight from this 'open world'. The actual missions are separated from this world by a loading screen and extremely obvious entrance points. In fact, the only freedom RAGE offers is being able to select one of three available missions and the order in which you do them.

    - Enemy AI does nothing to entertain you, is blatantly stupid and adds nothing to the game.

    - Graphics look nice but nothing we haven't seen before. There is a lot of talk about great textures, yes environment looks OK, but is nowhere near worth buying the game for; especially since all the other elements are done so badly.

    - Weaponry feels like we've been there before. Bioshock comes to mind in terms of gunplay mechanics. Don't expect any original weapons and certainly don't expect them to give you a satisfying grin shooting with them. The special items such as the Wingstick are actually the very things that add some level of joy (you can also make RC Bomb cars...) but they horribly destroy the game's difficulty.

Overall, RAGE feels like a showcase for the great megatexture technique from ID, but offers little to nothing for any player who has already played good old DOOM, and falls horribly short of the kind of game it wants to be. Having played the whole storyline, I am still left wondering what the actual point was.

Many graphics problems due to this, I tried using the help forums but it made my save game un-usable so i just tried unsuccessfully to ignore the awful texture popping. This game seems big for awhile until you realize its all empty space except for the, say 3-5extra locations you can explore. tho the game seems to think its much bigger, it tells you to explore and find things, all you find are enemies and ammunition, so its a moot search. Worst ending to a game ive seen in a long time, incredibly un-satisfying, there isnt even a boss or challenging situation it just ENDS with a few waves of identical mild enemies. many of the quests you do seem pointless, especially in the last area. you complete some preliminary quests, which led me to believe there would be alot more, but then they just stop and you are told to go fight the final battle for reasons not clearly defined.

Game is running smoothly on my system, graphics are ok. Game itself just is very boring and linear. I hate that there is no physics, except for what there is when driving, you can't destroy any environment what so ever. Also Rage's story doesn't inspire me to continue playing. Sounds suck. Blah

Oh my lord....this game was so bad. I kept playing to actually see if the game would get...same effect as Crysis...nope...greatly disappointing. The ending...wow...I will give it a solid 2 because the graphics had their moments. Whoever bought the collectors edition, I feel sorry for you.

The racing concept is fun, but very repetitive and not elaborated enough on to fully enjoy. What seriously hits this game hard though is the story, it's a complete joke. The story pacing rate is non-existent, there are no likable characters and the theme is just so bland and boring at best. Technically speaking this game is a nightmare-- horrible looking graphics, texture drawing issues, no graphical settings to be adjusted and a FOV that gives you a headache from just looking at the screen, releasing a game like this is just wrong and is criminal in my book and is false advertising at it's finest. If your going to even bother playing this game just torrent it, it's not worth a cent. Expand

Banal banal banal. A game that promised very well, had to be a cross between Doom and Fallout. Instead he found a game where our sole purpose is: accept the mission, carrying out missions, returns, accept the mission, carrying out missions, go back. Boring, repetitive and massive graphics problems. Bad game!

Terrible texture resolutions (not counting the pop-in) and lots of invisible walls or low edges or curbs, couches, or railings which will keep you from freely exploring the world. I do not find the game world fun or explorable due to this, and the sound seems completely dull and uninspired. It does not seem to use my Realtek 5.1 surround. Poor or nonexistent shadowing. It's a very poor attempt at a Borderlands-type game. Nothing during the game play has made me say 'Wow' and I do not feel there's anything new or exciting offered. This is a budget console title at best, and frankly anyone who's not played Borderlands should make that purchase instead. Also, some keyboard mappings cannot be altered, which is a terrible sin in my book. Expand

The graphics are fine, they are not jaw dropping and are plagued with issues on a vast array of systems. When it works, it looks like a FPS released in 2011 should be expected to look. It's the horrible game, itself, that is the problem. There has been blurring of RPG and FPS for years, with massive success -- because, as it turns out, people actually like character development. You usually get a skill tree or two (ala Borderlands), stats and abilities you can delve deep or lightly into for character specificity (ala Fallout: NV), a more engrossing storyline (ala COD).. hell, even Space Marine, by all rights a terrible first person shooter (but enjoyable multi-player -- where it actually remembers to offer character customization) makes a better effort.

Rage, in a nutshell, is a corridor shooter with quests. Boring, boring, quests. The quests themselves don't even yield a faux version of customization or development.. so you do them, for the sake of doing them. A FPS where you have to check in with NPCs before and after you do things.. just... because.

The single player campaign is probably 16 hours, at best. Coming in light. But hey, they do you the courtesy of pre-installing DLC folders already.. Both Bethesda and Id can do much, much better. Wait for this game to go half-off bin at your seller before picking it up.

Although the game mechanics and AI was fun to play against, that's all there was to this game. The story made little connectivity, the ending was a joke, the megatexture issues, and 100's of doors that can't be opened. This is 2011, and after how many years? 5? in the making, this game contains an absolutely non-interactive environment. You can search the ground and pick up hundreds of little items just for them to become "Small Objects" that you don't need to sell if you don't want to, since you have unlimited cash by mid game anyways. Seems as though more man power was focused into the racing portion of the game, especially since the mechanics were so well tuned. Although it was distracting to try and race with textures resmoothing constantly, the vehicles worked really well. This game is for you if the last good racing game you played was "Death Race Rally," but other than that, this is not worth $60. This is not worht $50. This is not worth $40. $30 dollar cap, and it's too bad Bethesda has their name on this product, even as a producer, its embarrasing. People wanna holler about how far id Softworks has come, but they should've hung their hats with Quake.

I will say though that this game has AMAZING POTENTIAL!!! It seems like the game can be something in the future, with a HUGE DLC, possibly unlock 1 of the 300 unaccessible doors in the game? Or maybe push out some of the invisible walls? The game feels like I'm on a roller coaster track with the invisible walls.

Boring Fallout 3 wannabe. Poor story, no character dept, washed up lines. Graphics are both fantastic and horrible. Close-up, they are Snes looking, and from far out the landscapes looks photorealistic. The game play is repetitive. The controls are not made for PC. Forget Quake 1-2-3, Doom 1-2, Heretic and Hexen. Currently, the game plays well on my computer but, not great like I would have expected considering my system is well within specs.

However, my comments here don't concern graphical issues. I'm rating this game very low for an Id title mainly for two reasons: lack of content and lack of quality workmanship one might expect from an iconic company in PC-gaming. Rage is a game of diversion and slight of hand, mostly the game-maker's hand. I found Rage's storyline embarrassingly weak for an Id/Bethesda collaboration. There are perhaps a half-dozen quests which actually promote the story, the rest are a bunch of poorly laid out shopping trips for quest-giver's to earn their favor or your personal improvement via weapons or armor.

This lack of decent story-telling is then, not-so-cleverly masked with unremarkable side-missions, passable dune-buggy racing and uninteresting mini-games. Having completed the game twice now, once for the sake of seeing and doing as much as possible and once for some of the achievements I can honestly say that - I didn't rush through the game - and have seen all that I care to. Given my long and generally happy experiences with both Id and Bethesda's games, I can tell you that this is not a game to have high expectations for.

I won't spoil the ending for you except to say it's equally - unremarkable. The abrupt ending is, no doubt, a precursor to DLC invasion of our pocket-books. I'll be passing on that. I gave the game 2 out of 10 on the basis of the artwork alone. I would like to thank Id and Bethesda for their past PC games and wish them much success with their new development focus... on consoles... "where the numbers are"...

Buy Rage at your own peril.

Overall... Rage is the sad result of the modern game industry. Rushed, unpolished, overblown, unoriginal, and released with no responsibility or respect. Weapon control is terrible, it mostly feels like shooting BB ' at the enemy... The environments are visually stunning, but the extreme level of linearity prevents you from wondering away from "invisible-wall" protected path, overall ruining what "could have been" an exciting experience.
I cant say much about the story, its pretty insignificant. Limited/no character interaction in the story, no build ups, no smell of a plot twist in the air.. No smell of any plot at all tbh.
Let it be known for the record that I have yet to finish the entire game, but at this point, im not sure that I want to...

    Conclusion:

I would wait for Borderlands 2... I hardly think it will fail as bad.
Don't buy Rage unless you are prepared to be patching, fixing and tweaking away all evening, only to be rewarded with a facepalm.
I wouldn't say it's as bad as buying a bag of crap, but at least with the bag you don't have to get crap all over your hands.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok.... so, iD wanted to make an RPG shooter in a post-apocalyptic setting with racing. VERY COOL IDEA. Unfortunately, they really, really screwed the pooch. ==========Your RPG elements consist of choosing one three suits with minor differences, three armor increases, and obtaining blueprints for building items. F-

=========Your FPS elements seem interesting, with multiple ammo types and several guns.... unfortunately, excepting the crossbow, which is just given to you, like most of the weapons, the shooting system is about as innovative and exciting as a plate of cold grits. You get thrown maybe three or four upgrades, you can't find any neat weapons out in the wild, you buy all your weapons and upgrades in shops (or someone just outright gives them to you), and there is no such thing as alternate fire, prone, leaning around corners, modifying your weapons, bullet travel time or physics. C

=========Continuing on FPS, the AI is extremely predictable, making it basically a chore after a certain point to wade through THE EXACT SAME ENCOUNTERS over and over again. More on that in a sec. There are no real innovative ammo types, excepting maybe the 6-in-1 pistol ammo. There is no stealth component.... once you engage, you're engaged and there is no benefit to using the one silent weapon, other than it's a crossbow. For a game with boss fights, they're kind of pathetic and sparse. The big build up to the final mission is...incredibly disappointing to say the least... It's really an understatement to say it's bad. D-

==========As for the post-apocalyptic setting, that is pretty par-on.... if you don't mind cheesy characters who don't reflect the values of people living in a society wanting for almost every necessary good. The mutants are interesting, but they're the only real â

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
