Despite the minor qualms I might have, Puzzle Quest 2 is still a very good game.
  2. This sequel goes light on the role-playing, but still presents a compelling puzzle experience that's as enjoyable and addictive as the original.

This is the Puzzle Quest you fell in love with, and the new dungeon exploration and usable items only sweeten the deal. If only all of life's problems could be solved by matching colored objects together.

Addictive RPG puzzler excels in game mechanics and brings fresh ideas and news to the "3-in-the-row" battle system. Quests, story and RPG elements are the main weaknesses in this sequel. [Issue#195]
  5. It runs perfectly in a window while you're doing something else on your PC; attend to it in free moments to rack up loot, levels, new spells and satisfaction. [Nov 2010, p.86]
  6. Puzzle Quest 2 it's the true sequel of a title that revolutionized the puzzle games genre. It retains all the fun, addictive gameplay and originality of it's predecessor. It's not perfect, the gameplay was dumbed down a bit and it can be a bit boring near the end, but we still reccomend it to anyone who loved the first, loves old style RPGS or simply loves puzzle games.

It is unavoidable to not compare it to Puzzle Quest 1, and through that this new game comes out as a slight disappointment. It lacks some of the deeper minigames the first game had, although the new kinds of minigames such as looting, is a nice touch. However, learning new spells is for example useless, as they are always weaker than the ones you learn from your character's spell book. This game is still a good follow up, but it could have been so much more, if it kept the minigames from Puzzle Quest 1 in addition to those which are already there. Full Review »

There just isn't enough depth to warrant putting in the 20+ hours to complete it. Don't get me wrong this isn't a terrible game by any means. If you like matching gems for hours and hours without really thinking about what you're doing, this game may be for you. For me, it lacked the personality and innovation of the original Puzzle Quest.
