This game takes the mechanics from several games - Bioshock the most, Dishonored, Deus Ex, Fallout (was surprised that i could not find a bobble head), Half Life and many others.

The graphics are good but it might be problematic if you have an old PC (it only slowed down for me in one section when set on max, 1st time ever with this computer)

There are several bugs, one of them annoying and almost game breaking, but it has been patched. The devs have been going for the Dishonored look of their characters and it backfired - every one of them has really a really ugly malformed face since they are not cartoonish enough. It is not a big problem, but it is worth mentioning.

    SLIGHT SPOILER AHEAD

The reason why I am giving this an 8 and not a 10 is because of all the ripping off (even though it is well implemented, it is still not original) and because of the ending. I do not want to spoil it any more and you might like it more then I did since it is original and bold. It just did not work for me.

Fantastic game! Superb atmosphere. Love the gameplay. Old school type of level desing (OG Deus Ex, Half Life, System Shock). Interesting Story. Great sound desing. Good Graphics and great asthetics.

However, players are well advised not to walk into it expecting System Shock 3, on pain of courting disappointment. Whereas SS2 was a hybrid between the immersive sim formula associated with Looking Glass Studios and survival horror elements centered on resource and tension management; Prey, on the other hand, eschewed any survival horror elements and focused on creating an ambitious immersive sim that gave the player ample gameplay and character-building options.

At this the game undeniably succeeds, primarily through the diverse suite of powers - many of which are highly environmentally interactive and combat symmetrical - that are implemented. The powers are unlocked through the use of consumables dubbed Neuromods, and they include skills for combat, sneaking, manipulating the various interactive elements in the station, and an impressive suite of psychic abilities that allows the player to become an unstoppable Esper. This diversity of options in character capacities is definitely one of the perks of immersive sims, and it is something which Prey delivers in spades. Apart from this, the game also boasts excellent level design.

The flip side of the game's plethora of options is that it suffers from some balance issues, as the player can become so powerful that even the strongest enemies eventually cease to pose a threat, not to mention that the abundance of Neuromods means that the player will often be able to pick so many abilities he will not even have to specialize in a given role.

Nevertheless, the game's environmental storytelling and interaction, emphasis on observation, and an open-endlessness that minimizes scripting in advancing the narrative all ensure that there is a symbiosis between Prey's excellent lore-world building and its gameplay that is rare in gaming. That, and the qualities of said gameplay, make it a worthy successor to the classics that inspired it.

Campbell Jr. novel "Who goes there?".
The setting here is the only difference. We’re not in Antartica but in a state of emergency space station named Talos One, located just on the other side of the Moon but still outside the orbit where planet Earth is still visible. It’s the year 2032, an alternative future where John F. Kennedy survived to the attempt of murder in Texas (1963) until his presidency became crucial from avoiding the Vietnam conflict to the stable standing, geopolitical relationship between USA and USSR through space conquests. So, Talos One itself represents basically that, in memory of Mr. President JFK. The main character (that can be shaped as male or female) is Morgan Yu, an engineer that lost part of his/her memory and it’s in constant needs of recover him/her pieces of lack through the whole story made of different decisions, including your own way to play that will affect the logic of game play approach.

Prey it’s a first person shooter that borrows many elements from the most successful hits of our times such System Shock 2, Half-Life series and Bioshock series through something that many customers tends to underestimate in regards of the developers: pure passion for what they generally do and, in this case, the science fiction matter. This game still proves (in 2017, with DirectX11 and a relative old game engine) that the best experiences are single player only, without online co-op or whatsoever multiplayer useless competition that requires too much efforts and years of development spent on building huge worlds and testing it. The immersion is total especially when you move from an area to another going outside the station with a propulsor pack at zero gravity and, of course, zero atmosphere (very well represented with the sounds from the inside of your own space suit that we suppose to hear not exactly like an underwater situation). The audio segment is enriched with a lot of narrative, Italian in my case, beautifully localized and expressed. The music is perfectly tailored to the whole atmosphere and again, very Alan Howarth/Carpenter stylized. What about the aliens? Well, they really “stole” the scenery here...maybe not so original in the highest and most dangerous shapes mixed with usual elemental stuff like electricity, fire or pure psychokinetic capacities but with behaviors that are just what we want to expect inside a nightmare: when you realize that they are completely mimic to objects like mugs, tables, suitcases, so able to hide on plain sight, is definitely enough shocking until you don’t get it and learn different approaches in order to become from prey...to predator!

In conclusion it's a game maybe not worth at full political price and aimed to pure sci-fi lovers audiences but with a 15%-20% off easy to reach on the net (especially PC versions) it might become a bargain and well balanced overall experience considering the total amount of hours 24H-28H of game play.

    Cheers!

    The story is great
On nightmare mode could take you alot of deads so is a fun factor when you fight an enemy you have to save ammo
    Great lore in game
    No annoying cinematics
Torture Alive/Dead homo sapiens is fun

    Cons:
Traveling back and ford could be annoying
No fast traveling due to the size of the map and different areas should be considered
Annoying constant "loading" screens between different areas
Some popping textures (on 1.02) are still pressent
    Short in enemies varieties
There is no multiplayer, if they make one some day with the pros it will be a fun multiplayer, trolling other players in torture chamber, converting them, or extract materials from them, also traveling from gravity to zero gravity.

The only thing that keeps it at an 8 at the moment it due to some bugs and glitches that I encountered with mimics and neuromods (but since it is still new with patches being made, I can't be too hard on that).

The only game that I can really compare it to is Deus Ex: Human Revolution with their game

While I do dislike the lack of aim-down-sights it's not one of those games that needs it (think Bioshock) due to the powers you can unlock right after the intro (provided you don't go muck about and ignore the story). For best results play up till you find the psychoscope then feel free to explore as it helps unlock your entire arsenal. The only bad thing I can think would be the facial animations and lip-syncing, but I'm not the biggest fan of Arkane's art direction. Over all this game is an 8 from me, but the ending felt a bit rushed and leaves you with many questions that it only briefly explains. Expand

An excellent atmosphere and well written dialogue creates a truly immersive setting which is something I haven't seen in a while. The game provides plenty of freedom for the player with the gameplay balanced nicely overall. The art style is refreshing and the graphics were consistent. I encountered no technical issues and had very favorable performance throughout my time with the game.

I'm too tired of the game type: Dishonored, Deus Ex and other stealth and not very games. But when I was sitting at the game for 2 hours, I began to like it, I adapted and already the meeting with the phantoms was not so long and hard for me. Arkane great fellows that were able to do from the afterlife project is really good, high-quality game, which the setting is no competition, after the passage of the new Prey played the old and I can say that I'm glad how the new game looks, the combat system, heroes, the plot and everything. Not only did not hit the dirt face and even surpassed all expectations and raised the bar for such projects.

+ Pretty well optimized for PC

    - Mediocre shooter gameplay
    - Outdated graphics
    - Disappointing ending ( personally for me )

Your choices aren't to simply get the ending you want, but to express yourself. That is because there are always at least 2 ways to solve any roadblock. I hate crafting at this point in games. So while it was here, it at least was simple. Every item can be turned into 4 basic material types and then built into whatever you need. I would rather that there was no crafting, but I think it is excusable here because it plays on scarcity of resources like games in the horror genre tend to, and yes this game is scary sometimes. I hate to say it, but I was on edge any time a new enemy showed up. Of course that wears off, so thankfully the game stands on its own. Because even after you get all the upgrades you'll need, and you start to bore of the same enemies and their tricks, the story is there for you. And in the very end it gives you an actual score screen. I haven't seen that in ages. So then you can simply go and try again. While the game is a little too long for me to want to replay for a better score, I would do it for a different playstyle for sure. It is just under 30 hours for me, and I took my time. You can probably do it in under 20 easily. I wish we had more games that didn't fluff up with nonsense and respected your time like this game. They made a clean design, where the space you play in is much smaller than most, but there is still so much to explore, and many interesting secrets and side quests. I didn't do them all in the end, and that is okay. I didn't expect to be this invested in the end. However I enjoyed myself...and that is a hard thing to get me to feel anymore with games. I genuinely wanted to play through to the end. I doubt I'll see another game like this for while. Everyone is too busy milking decades old franchises to death and adding in microtransations, but for a while I remembered what fun felt like with Prey. The one thing that held the game back was probably the combat and movement. I actually liked that there weren't 100 BS weapons you never use and just a handful because they all had a distinct job. However there was room to make it better. So the shotgun and pistol could be upgraded yes, but I would have liked to be able to ironsight for better range, or have crit spots on enemies for the pistol. They could have also made special ammo, like psi-bullets and elemental or explosive rounds, or armor piercing rounds to deal with different enemies. I again, found movement could have been used better. The only real upgraded around movement was to make you run and jump better. In the end, they gave a lot of what you needed and none of what would have been a clutter.

And just to end it I will say I hope to get Prey 2006, which also seems like a good game and its just not easy to find, so looking forward to that game next maybe.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize how beautiful, meticulous, and inspiring the presentation is, from the visionary, slick designs, all well-fitted together both stylistically and thematically, to the soundscape, dripping with atmosphere wherever you go. And you can go to lots of different places, all distinct in how they portray the environments, their function, and the traces of lives and activities of the space station inhabitants. Impressively, Talos I comes together as a cohesive, believable place, and manages to provide an assembly of intricate, engaging levels to explore at the same time.

But it might feel like how you explore them becomes underwhelming closer to the second half of the game. Progression gives you different abilities to solve roadblocks and go confidently through obstacles, but because their design needs to accommodate the players that might not have certain abilities, there often, if not always, seems to be a way to bypass said obstacles and roadblocks with some clever use of movement systems, consumables and your glue gun (a wonderful tool and a fearsome weapon!). The latter way is more daring, more roguish, it feels like you are bending the rules a bit - so it feels more fun, which kinda defeats the purpose of a lot of “exploration” upgrades. It’s optimal to instead spend your progression currency on combat skills, but they’re mostly boring stat increases, and the combat isn’t that deep in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, the whole thing functions the first time you play it, combat encounters can be quite tactical and very dramatic, but I struggle to see any enticement to the second playthrough without some self-imposed limitations because, otherwise, the core gameplay is a little too chaotic for the mood the game sets, and the skill tree is fairly unbalanced, lacking clear intention. I noticed a similar lack of intention to loot, where there’s plenty of stuff yet only a few things really count, but the ingenious crafting system that allows disassembling anything into a few primary materials kept it from getting boring.

Exploration also doesn’t benefit from the numerous loading screens, and the story does make you backtrack quite a bit towards the end, but it’s nothing outrageous. The plot keeps you on your toes almost the whole ride, it’s complex, psychological stuff, elevating the traditions of classic space horror tropes from Alien and alike to new heights with memory shenanigans, dysfunctional family issues, twist ending, and some actually well-written side stories from the voice logs.

Overall, the space station Talos I is well worth exploring, but be mindful of the difficulties Prey’s core system struggle through.

It has its flaws such as loading screens or unbalanced and annoying finale. But i think it's still an amazing game, it's a shame to see the low sales. Rip immersive sim genre.

TL;DR: This is an FPS in space with mutant powers. It's awesome.

This game is a first-person action RPG. There are two styles of combat: guns and mutant powers, the latter of which you unlock by recycling the organs of defeated monsters. You can use recycled components to upgrade your weaponry. The story is intriguing and keeps you engaged throughout. There are plenty of side missions

There are plenty of side missions that net you those all-to-necessary upgrade resources, and books and audio logs scattered about to fill out the ambience of the world.

My main gripe with the game is that you spend too much time doing inventory management. You have a system similar to RE4, with each item or gun taking up some number of slots that you're busy shuffling around and debating which things to toss and which things to keep to try to drag to the nearest recycler. If their goal was to try and limit how many of the game's various guns you could have on you, or to limit the number of other tools, they could have implemented something a little more elegant that wouldn't have left you slugging down 13 cans of various drinks you'd intended to take to the recycler but now have to be tossed to make room for the extra wrench you found whose materials are more valuable to you.

All in all, an awesome game, worth the buy.

I can't believe I'm saying this after getting so pissed off at the game in the beginning, but I liked it. It has its charm. It's nothing special, for sure, it nearly chokes on all the cliches. It seems well made. The battle system can be harsh but you get a better hold on things as you progress further along. It does get repetitive after a while, since the map is a "space station". I love the atmosphere of this game and the setting. It gains a lot of bonus points for really letting you tackle most situations in so many different ways. Using the alien powers is pretty cool too.

I think my biggest complaint is really how good the game gets (combat aside) and then farts out one of the most dissapointing ending(s) possible. This game really would have benefitted from a new game plus mode too, but unfortunately doesn't have one. All in all, it's a good game but has its flaws that hold it back from being truly great.

All in all, the game is fun and worth a play through, just be aware of the problems before going in.

When Bioshock and Dead Space give each other a special hug you get PREY. Atmosphere and ambience are amazing, the weapon variety is solid, the shooting mechanics are acceptable and the graphics are above average. This game is worth at minimum a rental but I recommend a buy. 10/10 Would special hug again.

The story is very interesting and it's told well, with great voice work from top to bottom, Prey also has multiple endings so replayability is an option if you like to get your monies worth. The general audio is also very good, helping to create a creepy atmosphere. Gameplay wise it's solid, there are plenty of weapons and gadgets to dispose of the Typhoon and I really liked the recycle and re-purpose mechanic. Visually it was also very good, with some great character models and environments. The one area it wasn't so great was performance, while definitely not bad at all it wasn't always smooth, some areas dropped for no apparent reason and there was some hitching at times, but nothing that ruined the overall experience too badly. Overall a solid package.

One bit of advice is to take it slow, don't rush through the main story, there are many minor and major side plots to discover and I missed almost all of them on my first run, don't make the same mistake

I want to say first off that I don’t think Prey was a bad game. Some of what I’ll say will sound a bit negative but overall it is a solid game. It has many things it did well but I didn’t enjoy the combat much. I found there to be too few weapons to use for my liking. There is a shotgun; pistol and a wrench as your main weapons. There are some grenade type weapons you can use that have different properties and there are powers you can choose to learn. Overall though I wasn’t interested in the alien powers and found the environmental attacks such as throwing furniture at enemies cute but not something that I wanted to do often. I also didn’t like the zero gravity parts as I found moving around annoying as I kept flying past where I wanted to go. There were also some timed missions which is a game feature I despise. Another game idea I hate that was used was respawning enemies. After killing all enemies in an area I could return later and there were new ones there. Now they weren’t the same ones, it was trying to say that the aliens were moving about the ship and nowhere was safe but the timing was way off. I could leave an area and return seconds later and there would be new enemies. You may say the game doesn’t follow real time but the timed missions were indeed using real time so I maintain it was poorly done. Many objectives were also very vague about where to go or what to do. Others were very specific or easy to figure out so it was a toss up on whether I would enjoy the mission. Lastly I was hoping that there would be some explanation about just what the Nightmare Typhon was but it never came. This thing stalks you across the station and even if you kill the thing it will come back later and hunt you more. I thought that maybe it would play a bigger role than just annoying me but I was wrong.

Now let me state what the game did well. The story was great and the further it got in the more I enjoyed it. I loved finding audio logs; emails; notes; etc that helped fill in the gaps on just what happened on Talos I. The voice acting was well done across the board. The trauma effects were fantastic. If you choose to turn it on there are trauma effects that can happen to your body based on certain injuries. You can become concussed; get radiation sickness; break bones; hemorrhage blood; etc. They were very well done in terms of the little details. When I was concussed everything became blurry at times and light was disorientating. When bones would break from a fall you could hear the bones crunch while walking and you limped. When you were hemorrhaging blood you left bloody footprints. The inventory system was well done and reminded me of Deus Ex. The system of being able to recycle items to build other items was well used. The graphics overall were pretty good. Facial detail and fire detail were a bit poor but the colour use was good as was the detail on weapons and objects.

I played Prey on Linux using Wine and Lutris. The game did have some technical issues. It crashed to desktop while loading a game once. It also froze once during the end credits and once during game play. Overall the performance was good. It did get laggy for a literal second or two sometimes but it wasn’t frequent and it never lasted longer than a couple seconds. The frame rate was usually over 80 FPS. There are 5 graphics options; 4 AA options; 4 AF options; and an FOV slider that went from 60-120. Alt-Tab worked. You can manually save whenever you want aside from when on elevators. There are 20 save slots although with the auto saves the game does at points there can be more. I played version 10966486 (38551) from GOG. You can change the difficulty settings at any time.

    Game Engine: Cryengine
    Disk Space Used: 27.5 GB
    GPU Usage: 0-99 %
    VRAM Usage: 3255-4178 MB
    CPU Usage: 14-41 %
    RAM Usage: 3.0-4.4 GB
    Frame Rate: 27-144 FPS
Settings used: Highest; SMAA2x; 16xAF; adaptive resolution off

So in the end did I have fun ? I did. I didn’t enjoy all of the game but I enjoyed enough of it to finish it. The good outweighs the bad. I finished Prey in 26 hours 47 minutes. I paid $14.99 CAD for it and would place it’s value closer to the $20 range. If you’re looking for a pure shooter it won’t fit the bill but if you’re more into adventure than pure action than it has enough to offer.

    My Score: 7/10

This is a fun game. I found it mostly enjoyable and immersive.
When I play this game I don't want to stop.

I like that you have a choice and can choose to play as a female or male Morgan Yu.

I liked thoroughly exploring every area and trying to find everything.

The story is ok, but not exciting or interesting enough.

I dislike that enemies are kind of boring all are way too simular black gloopy things of various size. Combat doesn't feel fun, it feels strange and floaty.
There weren't any fights that were particuarly thrilling or exciting.

Never bought the DLC as I found out it is timed, I hate anything that is restricted by time as I like to take my time and thoroughly explore and not have to rush, I also dislike and don't play any rogue type games, so this DLC is everything I dislike in a game.

It can be buggy as when I got enough points to hack the safe at the start lab area I could jump down but could not go back through as the helicopter room walls had no openings to go through. I managed to jump back up, though that area should not be blocked and is a bug.

It's an enjoyable and fun game to play through at least once. The ending was interesting, though quite disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Prey
From Fun and Scary to Slow and Boring
Prey is a first person survival horror game that seems to be heavily inspired by deus ex…
you start the game by choosing your male or female character…
You’re an experiment... and then things go wrong... the space station you’re living in has been overrun by aliens and guess who they’re after?
    You of course…
The game starts out pretty interesting and terrifying...
    There are mimics around…
    this is all you know
and at first all you have to fend for yourself is a wrench...
And these mimics... they can be anywhere…
as they take the shape of random items in the world…
Randomly running into them was terrifying and made for many great jump scare moments…
honestly a wrench and mimics is all this game needed it… but it didn’t stop there…
it tried to do too much and they game becomes a boring drag because of it..
This game reminded me a bit of deus ex and bioshock…
mostly on the deus ex side though…
There are neuromods around the world that you can pick up to unlock new skills
these skills include the basics like being able to lift large objects, increase your health, or be able to hack locked doors…
and you have to choose carefully because these skills are expensive and neuromods practically hardly exist compared to the prices…
made even more ridiculous when you unlock even more mimic type skills from scanning enemies later on in the game.. it’s just too much for how little the game pays out…
Speaking of too little to go around…
health, and pretty much everything else…
It doesn’t matter which difficulty you play this game on.. It’s going to be brutal…
enemies are sponges even against fully upgraded guns... they do insane damage…
And the food you find around only gives about 5 health... which is nothing... med kits are extremely rare…. And your health only regenerates to around 30…
    so you’re gonna die a lot…
you can recycle trash at machines for materials or use recycle bombs for materials and then use these materials to craft medkits and ammo.. But still... these items aren’t all over the place and doesn’t necessarily make med kits or ammo extremely accessible... they’re still rare even with this crafting machine
No worries you can just stealth around enemies…
    sort of…
because they have magnets in their head…
the game tricks you into believing they’re attracted to noise because of certain lure bombs you can use
but this is a lie… I know this is a lie because there’s one mission in particular where you have to collect voice samples… one part of this mission challenges you to stay alive while a song plays.. After hiding in the room and failed I thought okay, clearly these enemies are attracted to the noise... ill click play and run down the hall and hide away from the room…
I did this and guess which room the enemies came to?
Not the one with the song playing... the one I was in just sitting there waiting for me to enter their line of sight to they could attack me…
and this waiting happens a lot... they won’t move, they will sit and wait until they can see you
    it’s annoying and emersion breaking
    This game has its moments…
its surprisingly varied considering you’re stuck in a space station…
it’s fun and thrilling at times running from enemies while you try to find key cards and information to progress…
But it’s also just as annoying since the game is inconsistent with telling you where to go to progress…
sometimes your location is marked on the map.. sometimes you have to just feel your way around and search everything while dealing with monsters…
The game also have a few progression bugs that will cause you to back in and out of a save..
Which isn’t too bad since you can save at anytime youd like…
As well as performance issues if you play too long..
the inventory and weapon wheels start to lag…
Bugs aside, Prey ultimately suffers from imbalance…
There are far too few materials, health, or ammo for how spongy and excessive enemies are in this game..
they become a nuisance instead of a scare…
I could easily see this being a game of uncertainty with only a flashlight, a wrench, and some mimics…
But instead Prey sets out to frustrate you for 16 hours… its becomes die and try again to get just a little luckier this time while dealing with over powered monsters… While I definitely did enjoy moments of prey… I didn’t enjoy most of the moments of prey… I give Prey a 7/10

New Prey left me with some mixed feelings after I watched the final credits. It is a combination of mechanics from good ol’ Half-Life, Deus Ex, and Bioshock, in my opinion. And it feels like, trying to take the best from all worlds, Prey fails to 100% succeed in any of the directions it chose.

Gameplay is okay. I’m a hardcore fan of FPS titles, and Prey feels mediocre - most of the game

Gameplay is okay. I’m a hardcore fan of FPS titles, and Prey feels mediocre - most of the game the most efficient way to deal with enemies was to shotgun the **** outta them. Or, in the worse scenarios, glue them first - and then use your shotgun. Yeah, you could use some other methods of exterminating your enemies - but you really don’t have to, as this combo is working in 90% of the cases.

Role-playing element is rewarding, I liked the progression system, it seems balanced and interesting.

Overall stylistics of the game is fine, but it just can’t stand comparison with the detail-rich and monumental worlds of Bioshock series (though it resembles it in many ways).

I didn’t enjoy the story that much, for me Prey failed to create emotional connections with characters, and the final twist in the plot is too predictable to be surprised.

My final score is 7 - I had some nice hours playing Prey, but unfortunately the mix of the “borrowed” components doesn’t result in a spectacular, memorable result.

I was asking myself where would it go after the stellar opening? And the answer is pretty much nowhere. It stagnates for a couple of hours and then it ends. Ending is pretty good and makes you reframe the story. Too bad the meat of it is a bit lacking. The genre definitely does not seem to be my cup of tea.

Konuşmayan karakterimizle, tesiste yaşanan felaket hikayesiyle bana Half Life'ı anımsattı.

This game is not for everybody. I expected "Dishonored in space" and that's not exactly what Prey is. It's way more stealth based, slow and your character is for most of the game hugely under-powered. I love Arkane and Prey definitely isn't a bad game, just a one I didn't enjoy as much as I thought.

Prey has elements that are 9/10 or better and other parts that are 4/10 or worse. It has a solid story, good atmosphere and ambience, and only crashed once. I played the game on nightmare and overall it was easy until the heavy robots show up at the end and then I had to emp and hack everything at which point the game became tedious 100% of the time. The devs ran out of interesting and new combat scenarios and eventually you're just running around with no interesting gameplay while you move the story forward. The story is interesting though and it certainly does provide a fun twist on a bioshock like story but without interesting combat you're just running around pushing buttons and looking at loading screens. If you are going to play this game I would suggest playing it on Normal or Hard difficulty because Nightmare will just add to the tedium for the last 30-40% of the game. Expand

Lots of bugs, characters and quests glitching out, some hard crashes, several occasions where you go through a door and you lose items from your inventory which is devastating. Not good. It needs a lot of patching.

Severe lack of enemy variety. There's only like 5 different enemies in the game. Some of them are the same enemy, but they shoot fire instead of energy or are slightly harder variations.. Some of them you only encounter once or twice.

The weapons feel very underpowered (even when upgraded) up until you get the Q Beam which kills even the toughest enemies within 5 seconds and doesn't even use up a lot of ammo. It's jarring, there's a crazy lack of balancing that would at least make everything moderately useful. You can craft a lot of things in the game, but the only things worth crafting are neuromods and Q Beam ammo.

Because almost all the weapons are bad, you are encouraged to use turrets to do your work for you, but they are also useless. You set up a turret and, even against the weaker enemies, it's a diceroll whether they do the instant-teleport-melee attack which knocks the turret over and destroys it, or they sit there and get shot to death. You just sit there and reload until it works out. You might as well not bother and use the Gloo gun + Wrench against everything, until the enemies can't be killed by anything other than the Q Beam. Really dumb.

There's a story, but for the first 15+ hours of the game nothing really happens. You are only fed tiny bits of information. If you play games for the story, you will probably get bored here before the story starts going.

The sound levels are seriously broken. Playing with headphones, sounds of things that are next to you randomly disappear, while you can clearly hear an enemy that's 2 floors above you like it's licking your ear. Audiolog/dialogue/ambient sound mixing is completely broken, with ambient sounds often drowning dialogue and other important things.

There are glimpses of brilliance in Prey (the level design, soundtrack and atmosphere are great), but they get smothered in bad decisions and technical issues. Get it on sale after they patch it up.

A decent game with a few bad issues.

The pacing is way off. Powers are unlocked super slow for the first 2/3 of the game. Then during the last 1/3 of the game, you get more ability points than you know what to do with.

The backtracking is excessive. I started skipping side quests during the last half of the game just because I didn't want go to back the same areas I've already been to 4 or 5 times for other side quests.

The enemies hit too hard. I was playing on the normal difficulty and just about everything kills in 2 hits. There are 2 settings higher than normal so normal probably should have been toned down. Lots of fights I only got through by save scumming or cheesing the AI. Speaking of save scumming, the "quick load" key should load the last point where I used quick save, NOT the last time the game decided to auto save on its own (usually in the middle of a fight where I'm at 5 health).

The nightmare events should have just been removed from the game. A giant alien comes from nowhere and you have to kill it or hide. Killing is out of the question because it just takes too much ammo, health, etc. So hide it is. You have to hide for 3 minutes. Three. minutes. Nobody likes sitting in a game doing nothing for 3 minutes. It's not fun, it will never be fun. But this game has you do it over and over and over again.

Also there are two loading screens for every transition for some reason? The first loading screen actually has a progress bar, then when it fills up, it goes to... another loading screen, this one without a progress bar. Weird design choice.

There was plenty of other stuff not to like too, like the resource harvesting grind, the unsatisfying and overly complex combat against damage sponge enemies that are much the same black smear or annoying bots.

There's one enemy that is hilariously lame and deserves special mention, because I think it's one of the most poorly designed enemies I have experienced in gaming. When you encounter this enemy, literally the best way of dealing with it is to simply walk away and do something else or check your phone for a few minutes while it's screeching away in the background. Yeah, it's an enemy so ridiculous the best way of beating is to stop playing the game!

There was plenty of good too, like the exploration, interesting and much more enjoyable side quests, organic upgrading and the multiple approaches to objectives. A lot of this was well thought out and I had a lot of fun trying different things, or even discovering I could have done *this* instead of *that*. The good stuff was good enough to keep me going through the whole game to the end.

Unfortunately the obviousness of the main story and the complete apathy it induced towards the NPCs and the main quest ruined the game for me. I was hoping it was going to surprise and not do the obvious, but it didn't. I killed them all in the end, and didn't feel bad about it in the least.

Also, the game seemed to become increasingly unstable the further I progressed, with crashes on transitioning maps, disappearing weapons, passive enemies and more.

I'd like to see another game with the good parts but with a less brain dead setting and more interesting enemies.

    - the general level design and complexity of the environment (meaning clutter and overall immersion of walking around something that has been lived in and used)
    - the story - which is not very deep and complex (its rather a 101 sci-fi "wake-up-no-idea-what-happened" story) but well presented via visuals and conclusions.

    What i do not like:
    - the gunplay - i cannot pin it down to a single reason - but i find the pacing unsatisfying. Weapons feel to have very little impact imo and or feel odd.
    - the AI - and i do not mean that the AI is particularly bad. But i felt like - at least in my experience so far - the AI seemed to charge into melee range in an instant most of the time - and kind of exploited the VERY narrow field of view; with the hit indicators being quite imprecise.
    - the aliens are anything but scary. There are a few jump scares - but their design is simply too simple.

Also - and maybe it is just me, because i only casually played the game so far - the ability to mimic objects might be too perfect. They jump out of no-where. I would have preferred it if they imitated an object "almost" perfectly - so that i would be forced to pay much more attention to detail to spot them. Since they seem to be perfect in that regard - i do not need to pay much attention at all - i just need good reflexes.

All in all it did not quite catch me with its atmosphere and immersion. The gunplay is not satisfying and the story is average.... which leaves me with an average product.
Is is worth playing? sure - average is not bad ...
Will it provide an exceptional experience (like the first time one played Bioshock maybe)? - no, i don't think so - but it is a solid time waster.

Ok first things first the game world/ space station is very nicely designed the devs obviously put alot of time / effort into it, and it shows although it must be said that even though this game is a few years old now even taking that into account the visuals are quite dated looking but being an old skool gamer pretty graphics is just a bonus if the game plays well, great! npc's/ enemies look terrible im talking ps2 era terrible and you cant help but keep noticing that, npcs they kind of get away with, but the bland enemy designs are lazy, im not exaggerating when i say 90% are different shaped purple blobs, with a few nice touches in between which i wont spoil, considering this is using the cryengine technically it is a mess and kind of broken, from some of the longest load times ive seen in 10 years and thats using an ssd to broken frame rates when alot is happening on screen multiple times especially with multiple lasers it dropped to 5-6 fps a few times i just assumed it crashed, there is also a crazy amount of bugs, from getting stuck in floors to quests glitching out to the classic out of no where u go flying across the screen to game over from nothing. Being published by bethesda at first i actually just assumed it was using their engine as the problems r very similar to fallout 4 and the game is very similar graphically especially with the crazy long load times on area change so i was surprised to see it was cryengine which is a technically impressive engine. So is the gameplay good? yes it is, you will start off seeing a single normal phantom as a 1 man army you try and take down, to 20+hours in expertly flying round cleverly using the games unique gloo gun to plan your routes, right from the start its clear u have to be careful with your resources which you do find everywhere but alot of it is recycling junk / unwanted items to then fabricate items you need, and it works superbly, multiple times i was preying (pun intended) for a recycle/ fabricate station to appear round the next corner, or those moments when i thought oh nice! gloo gun ammo! i kind of wish they had used more of the soundtrack / music as its really good and adds to the atmosphere just not enough of it, the sound effects are unique though if nothing special, there is a classic upgrade system for weapons and (skills) via mods which again works ok and plays a part in the story, again nothing special tbh its all been done before, and the story which is a big part of this game is a nice idea but unfortunately again very avg/ txt book and again all been done before, i did enjoy it but its been done alot better in other games like ones mentioned above. So it comes down to do the technical problems and other stuff spoil the game? well no not completely anyway but yes they did have a massive negative impact on the game overall for me, without spoilers towards endgame u have to traverse across the station which again is very txt book videogame and theres nothing wrong with that but i ended up thinking did the devs actually play this bit? in 1 mad dash bit across different areas it was literally 50% load times and again bear in mind im using an ssd on a decent gaming rig, for someone on an avg setup using an old skool hdd it is gonna be very frustrating. Its prey only in name :(

This game was exciting in spots, satisfying in spots, interesting and cool to explore for a while.
Then the limited ammo and the respawning enemies started to become a drag, there were a few glitches and un-finishable quests for me, the missions and re-visiting areas became not fun at all because of the micromanaging and balancing use of scarce resources, and when I finally finished it, they tell me it was all a freaking SIMULATION and none of it meant anything?!
I was so deflated after finishing this game, I really wish I'd never bothered, what a total lack of payoff for all the troubles and stress endured throughout the game.
To sum up: Gaming should be fun, this was largely not fun, I persisted through it because it seemed to be going somewhere and I wanted to see how it ended, but the ending turned out rubbish.
Don't know what the developers were thinking, this game doesnt deserve the Prey namesake.

The bad is the graphics. To me it's not as good as many claim. It's only a minor improvement over the 2008 original Prey. What puts me off, is the use of straight lines, squares, cubes to form shapes. Of course things are round, curved or sculptured where it's needed, but the overall tendency is a scenery build-up by straight lines. The colors are crisp, the resolutions are high, so that might give it an illusion of quality, but it's nothing impressive for a recent game.

Another typical minus you'll see these days in games, is the ineffective use of graphics settings. We have textures - for example - the low settings, medium, high and very high. But both the visual difference and performance difference between these settings are minimal. Also anti-aliasing didn't perform optimal. Under certain angles, you still see the jagged lines on railings and between doors despite the highest settings.

Now something about the game play. It was quote O.K. Nothing groundbreaking, but the good news is the upgrades one finds are useful. Many games offer a trillion upgrades and weapons and whatnot but usually only a handful are useful. Such is not the case here.

With this, multiple solutions often do exist to solve one or the other problem, which almost always is a path-finding (or item-finding) challenge. The other good thing is that there seems to be multiple ways to kill the aliens, but the bad news is that the methods are based on the same principle of "stun/incapacitate, then kill".

Three examples follow: the player could throw a special grenade which makes the monster stare at the grenade so you can sneak up on it and bash its head in. The second method could be that you use your GLOO gun, to shoot a glue-goo at the alien which immobilize it, so you can run to it and bash its head in. A third option is to electrically stun it with your stun pistol, then run to it and bash its head in.

After a few times you've seen it all and done it all. Most playthroughs posted on the internet eventually result in run-and-shoot more or less. i tried a more intelligent approach each time but I got bored with it. Make sure they don't notice you, so you can execute the stun-then-gun method (or go full Rambo).

Another thing to notice is that all enemies are kinda look-a likes, though one is bigger than the other. The atmosphere on the other hand is quite nice I must say.

So all in all, this game has a promise of some depth and story wise it works for me. This game has its ups and downs, but in the end it's an elevated shooter with straightforward graphics.

    2. Kill spider looking fuzzy aliens, just glue them and club them
    3 Repeat step No 1 and no. 2 x100000
    That is the whole game!!
    4. Try to find a bunch of junk, dumpster dive into trash to pick up banana peels and a roll of wires, because you will need to recycle a lot to have any sort of ammo and fixing your suit.
    5. The bigger monsters will teleport around you so you gonna be whacking around with your wrench (just like in Half Life 2, but the combat is a lot worse) , they will also teleport a fire or shock bolt whatever, so they are difficult.
    6. Back to the keys, you found the door that need to be opened after crawling around in shafts and figured out you can bash some windows in (others you can't) and/or found an alternate route 3 times on your way, because some other door (on your way to get a door key) was locked.
    7. Once you finally have the key, the game tells you to go back to the original location to open a safe or another door and finally you get either a video recording or voice recording plus 10 rounds to your pistol and maybe 1 health booster.
    8. The video tells you that you gonna have to go somewhere to repair or find someone (trust me he is dead, everyone dead in this game) , but in order to do that - you guessed it- find some other damn key and that key can be reached by only to find a key before that.
This kinda drove me nuts. Also the monster aliens are respawned and you will be out of ammo and instead of looking for that damned key, you are trash collecting to make some bullets or glue ammo or whatever your favorite poorly performing weapon you settled on.
While the game wants me to "sneak by" these monsters, because I'm weak, it forgets to mention, that many times it throws the biggest bullet sponge front of me and I gotta deal with it while it electrocutes me and if you put most of your points into sneaking, then you are now in trouble...
Also the save system... is literally from 2002.
    The graphics is from 2006.
The whole menu and inventory system is from 1998.
The combat system is from probably 2005 or earlier, because it's really feels like I'm just waiving in the air and some display shows I did some damage, the weapons sound bad and feel nothing like weapons at all.
I know, many people want hard games and this kind of a game (System Shock) is missing in action for a quite a while, but when I want to play something like System Shock, I don't literally mean that I want to play the same exact game, with obsolete functions and obsolete combat system, I mean heck, System Shock actually had a better combat than this.
Anyway, beside combat and graphics and menu system, the real deal breaker for me is looking for keys to open the doors. It just can't be that anymore. We moved on from this.. I kinda had enough of that after Doom II in 1994...
While I do like slow burning games, this game is literally patched together from similar previous titles, but did nothing to make it feel like it's 2017 (or 2019 was I'm writing this) .

NOT A FUN GAME, UTTERLY BORING, AND FRUSTRAITINGLY ANNOYING TO PLAY 3/10, NOT CHALLENGING ONCE YOU FIND OUT THAT MAXING OUT COMBAT EARLY IN THE GAME HELPS A TON (not an issue, i actually recommend you do this, cus the game is annoying af), A BIG WASTE OF TIME, STEALTH IS A JOKE

Let me start out by saying that this game is quite challenging. Even at normal difficulty I found myself struggling to stay alive due to the ridiculously low amount of supplies you receive. At this difficulty, I found myself in a position where I really wasn’t enjoying the game. I had to sneak passed enemies, which took forever; all the sneaking bored the hell out of me. Ultimately, I lowered the difficulty to easy and was able to enjoy the game a lot more. No longer did I have to wait monumentally long seconds for an enemy to pass. Instead, I could now blast them with my pistol or shotgun without worrying whether I’ld run out of ammo. However, even at the lowest difficulty, the game still presents you with a challenge of ammo conservation; so, easy on the trigger fellas – ya’ll going to need to save your ammo. Prey is not your average shooter, it’s a slow paced “survival horror”.

Story is quite interesting; I will have to update this review further down the line when I finish the game. The maps and UI are kind of confusing at first, but you’ll later get used to it. Enemies are fairly challenging, but all enemies can be quickly dispatched with guns – if you have the ammunition.

UPDATE: Oh man, is this game annoying to play. You will consistantly find yourself taking on a side mission, only to find out that you do not have a certain skill level to complete that task. By the time you find out, you've trecked accross the map and wasted monumental amounts of time & a♥♥♥♥♥♥ton of limited resources.

The game likes to lock you out from key main story areas if you don't upgrade your character in a certain way. I had to waste upgrade points just to get through a certain door, no other alternatives but to upgrade. I tried looking for hidden paths but nothing popped up; ultimately had to upgrade hacking to open a door. Rather would have used them upgrade points on more usefull skills on the tree. Ultimately, you are going to waste a lot of time grinding for upgrades. Recommend you avoid this game if your time is valuable to you.

This game is hard to enjoy, combat is pretty wack. I utterly regret buying this game.

UPDATE: finally finished the game, thank god! It felt like i was taking a bullet out of me. Honestly, this game isn't worth the play through. It was more annoying than fun. Even after i learned how to dispose of all enemies effectively, it was still annoying to play. overall, i give the game a 5/10. buy it when it hits 10 bucks, or dont buy it at all. its a waste of time and has too much back tracking and area lock outs for you to even enjoy. Not to mention the subpar combat system. This is that old school type of game that I wish stayed dead. its tedious af, and annoying af.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is an okay game by the end of it. I have just completed it. It took a fair amount of time so is good enough to keep me playing. However, about half way through it became clear that a bunch of the story doesn't make sense. Key things that make you go... what? It loses its gameplay edge fairly early on too as it is clear exactly how much repetition and constant backtracking there needs to be. Some of the side quests are buggy. Some of them are stupid and could be resolve din 20 seconds if the protagonist could speak which he cannot. It is very 'woke'. Some people won't care or possibly notice but many will and I find it yet another attack on society through popular media, it is tiresome and over represented to an absurd level. There are better graphics out there but these fit with the game and are pleasant to look at. The biggest frustration however is the ending. You rush madly to fulfil your decision (which is a pretty polar opposite decision by the way and there appears to be little information to work with other than how you feel about life. Risk based decisions REQUIRE risk analysis conversation and resolution. I won't type much more in here to avoid clear spoilers but the potential was missed. Then, even missed you expect some narrative completion but no... Instead it is over UNTIL a secret extra ending at the end of the credits. This ending is just a giant gift of **** given from Bethesda to us. It is a classic NO NO NO, in story telling. It was not a clever twist, it undoes so very much of everything, makes light of the work you have done (and I'll be honest, at times I approached this game like it was work) and basically 'I woke up, and it was all (mostly) a dream is a slap in the face with a floppy. Oh well, pleased I bought it on super discount. Expand

I have to say that this game is underwhelming. It looks great in terms of graphics and style (like a combination of Dishonored and Bioshock). However, the shooting mechanics are poor, and it is a boring game. I'm probably going to play a bit more, but it feels like a chore than fun (I did pay a nice coin for it...).

Dishonored 2 one of best series I've played was very buggy and bad optimized because they were working on this game at the same time which was not worth it.

It's trying to do so many things but does not do anything right. I'd rather have quality over quantity. These Devs should stick to the Dishonored series because they doing a good job there even though Dishonored 2 DLC was garbage

    Now to prey:

    Cons:
-The game gives you guns yet the game forces you to play stealth 90% of the time.
-The enemies design is very bad and all the enemies looks the same.
-Melee combat and glue gun are very boring to use.
-Frustrating game overall. You sometimes die and don't even know what you did wrong.
I stopped playing after 12h and it was not even the first times I tried playing it. I had 2 tried before that and each was about 6h and stopped. The third try was my last.

    Pros:
-Beautiful visual style which reminds of Bioshock a visual style maybe therefore people comparing this to Bioshock?
-Considering the crappy ports we are getting on PC, Prey optimization for PC are pretty good in comparison.

People dare comparing this to Bioshock and Dead Space? it has nothing to do with either.

If you want something scary and does less thing but does them right? Get--> Alien Isolation.

Prey takes on the classic pattern of first person shooters and slap it in a dark, pressuring atmosphere packaged with the game's praiseworthy visuals and immersive sound design. While the game did those parts right, Prey is a horror-shooter with weak gunplay and poor controls -- and we all know that's a critical part of any game.

But on the other hand, the combat in Prey is some of the absolute worst I have seen in a while. To be more precise, the flaw doesn't actually lie in the offensive capabilities of your character, rather in the enemy design. The enemies in this game are so poorly tuned for a first person survival/exploration game that it genuinely makes me wonder how nobody at Arkane raised their hand and said something before release. The Typhon are erratic and extremely fast, often teleporting behind you and behaving in extremely disorienting ways, and their movement effectively makes this game a twitch shooter, which feels unbelievably out of place seeing as this game emphasizes resource scarcity, and a slow, methodical playstyle. Not to mention the absolutely obnoxious, epilepsy inducing particle effects that will cover your entire screen in any fight with more than 2 of the Phantom enemies, and make it extremely difficult to tell where damage is even coming from in the first place. Some enemies will deal constant AoE damage to you within a certain range, and the game offers no reliable way of avoiding damage from many of its monsters, which made this game even on the easiest difficulty, an incredibly frustrating slog to get through. Some players seem not to have these issues at all and I envy them. There is so much to like here, but the bafflingly terrible combat design drags my score down from a 9 to a 5. Expand

First off the gameplay is awful. At no point does it feel like there is any skill involved in combat at all. It is simply, "do I have enough ammo and hp?" Check, ok win fight. The stealth mechanics are half fleshed out. The entire space sequences are annoying as **** because the movement mechanics in space are awful. The main story is meh with an equally unexciting ending.

The one good thing that is the side quests and how they develop the side characters in this game. All of the side content (emails, quests, audiologs). However the pacing with the side quests is quite slow, as they don't really pick up until you're 6-7 hours into the main story.

The story is bad, but the storytelling( i.e good side quests and content) is good. The gameplay feels like a meshed up deus ex and bioshock child that does neither well.

You start your first, sunny day of work at TranStar Labs in a big city and soon after find yourself up to your neck in trouble on a space station orbiting Earth, where things have gone very, very wrong. The transition from the first environment to the second is very well executed, it's probably the most memorable moment in the game. The rest is essentially System Shock 2 in 2017, which is a good thing for me. The game even openly acknowledges its roots (for example, a new holographic tech is named Looking Glass technology). It plays as an FPS with PSI powers and tech skills, and follows System Shock tropes, where you have a series of short term goals, and everything always goes wrong. "We need to restart the reactor. Oh no, it's stopped mid-sequence, we need to get the gizmo replaced and then retry. Damn, the replacement is in an area overrun by nasties". I love the gameplay, went full PSI powers on my playthrough and don't regret it.
What's wrong with the game, then? It's yet another male-bashing fest. Maybe not so blatantly as in Horizon ZD, where "Men only bring destruction, I want no male children" clearly complements a long string of strong female warriors and meek, emasculated male nincompoops. Here it's subtler and potentially even worse, you notice it if you dig deep into the email system of the station: the picture that soon emerges is that males are unreliable, temperamental workers at best, while females are almost always dependable, often heroic. Real examples from the game include Loyd, who smokes near fuel manifolds, Frank, who harasses Emanuella, Dayo, who has no qualms getting live subjects killed in his experiments, a guy who keeps denouncing his co-worker's supposed sloppiness to their boss in order to ingratiate her, another one who uses the high tech equivalent of duct tape to seal leaks instead of using proper parts, yet another one who constantly accuses his colleague of having stolen his ideas, a paranoid one who wants to get a shotgun and seal himself in a bunker, a demented scientist who mistreats his female assistant, a military guy willing to commmit mass murder as easily as he makes coffee, a deranged serial killer, a guy who uses company material to build his own pet robot, a drunkard who dies in a refuse tank, and many more. Male employees disregard procedures, almost invariably freak out in the face of danger, and are often class A a**holes, especially when in a position of power.
For the females, we have the tough-as-nails security chief, the heroic Mikhaila whose insists that you don't waste time getting her life-saving medicine, the courageous Annalise, who risks her very life to expose the illegal experiments, the strong and ingenuous Danielle, who remains alive against impossible odds and gives you vital help, and a string of people who do their daily job with conscience and care, and remain calm and rational even on the threshold of death. To balance things out, there is the female chief of a smuggler ring, but she is arguably much better than her male lackey, who goes grovelling back to the director and begs for mercy.
I wish developers put a sticker on games such as this, reading "Feminism-compliant game" or something like that, so that I would know to avoid them. I would have never bought this game had I known of its "males are sad, inferior creatures" stance.

The biggest problem in this game is a quest structure... Almost every quest is looking exactly the same... You need to avoid enemies while searching for as many key cards you can find and next you need to find the doors that you need to open. At the beginning it's fun but when you realize that this game can't offer you anything besides this scheme it's totally messed up experience. Fighting in this game is a one big misunderstanding... Enemies are very strong and can kill you very quickly but you are constantly running out of ammo or stamina to defend yourself. And even if you beat tough enemy your reward will probably be some worthless junk like banana peel... Seriously? After 10 hours of playing pray is becoming so boring and frustrating... Enemies are everywhere and you are running out of ammo, out of room in you backpack out of ideas where to find another KEY CARD! When you'll reach your destination, sneek pass or kill every enemy, searched every corner for loot... You'll probably realized that you missed somewhere a KEY CARD. This game would be a 6 hours long if you throw out all the searching for those stupid KEY CARDS to all the doors. Maybe I am just not patient enough or maybe I just played this game somewhat differently than others... But this game wasn't for me at all... I really do understand now why this game never reached a wider audience. Expand

Many of its elements never quite come together, so there’s no payoff. The clumsy human stories, the botched difficulty curve, the dangling gameplay threads, the pointless decisions, the cool 3D printer scavenging economy, the coral, the hunters, the various survivors who need saving. If I never had fewer than a dozen mana potions, what did it matter whether I did the quest to put mana healing into the water supply?
