Potions: A Curious Tale does a great job immersing you in the journey to become a potion master. Experimenting with the different combinations and discovering possibilities is fun, letting you spend hours trying to find everything. Luna's journey is enjoyable to follow, even if it is easy for her to achieve her goals. It may not be easy to find side quests and failures are frustrating to encounter. But the game's charm easily outshines its flaws, giving you an enjoyable experience where you are an active participant in becoming a potion master.

That’s what this game is: something special. All its potential doesn’t feel like it’s been given enough room to breathe, alas that’s the burden that all indie devs contend with. Still, despite its niggling flaws, it makes for an impressive, interactive illustration of how far your dedication can take your dreams. Uniqueness isn’t black and white. It doesn’t always make sense, nor can you always put your finger on the "x factor" that has you so taken in, yet you’re invested all the same.

Whether it’s discrepancies in visual style, stiff animations, or the surprising shortness of the game, Potions: A Curious Tale struggles to find its place among the growing swathe of popular indie titles. And what makes this particularly difficult to write, is that I truly wanted to love this game. It has so much potential, yet almost none of that is fully realized. It could be incredible with enough time and a little more effort, but right now, it seems that this potion needs a little more time in the cauldron.

Sometimes, it’s easy to want a new game to break the mold and offer true innovation, but with a genre as saturated as cozy games, that’s extremely difficult to do. While we’d be remiss in ignoring where there’s room for improvement, we’d also be remiss in ignoring what Potions: A Curious Tale does well.
